    Canada here. Putting an old blanket or towel at the bottom of the door will help keep the cloth out, or use a curtain rod and hang a blanket over the door, then you can just slide it aside when you want to go out. And in the winter we use those clear plastic window kits on our windows.

    • @FinalFrontierHomestead-i5t

      Fantastic advice! We do put a towel down to soak some of the moisture up, but that blanket idea is great! Thank you!

    You need double pane windows and door insulation to keep snow and ice out.

      We have double pane windows and our door is an insulated steel door. You need triple pane windows up here, but we couldn’t afford them. These are double panes out of an old cabin that was gifted to us, so their age definitely plays a role in the problem.

    I have been in -47 weather in northern BC when I was younger and we just put more cloths on cause we still had a job to do. Wasn't fun but we did it. The older I get the less I like the cold so am in southern BC now where the coldest we have had so far is about 30. Haven't even dug out the winter boots yet cause we have no snow. Keep the stove cranked up and relax until the coldsnap breaks and you can get back outside again.

      Yeah, I grew up in Minnesota where there is a ton of humidity. I would say the humidity plays a big role, but even here in our little valley, which is 3.5 hours from Fairbanks, has been getting and unusual amount of humidity these past two winters. According to the weather channel is was -56° with 97% humidity. So it was COLD. Living through winters in Minnesota, Wyoming, and Montana, I would say the toughest part of winter here is how long it is. We’ve had snow since late September, I honestly don’t even remember what the ground looks like at this point 😅 at least in the lower 48 the snow melts and it warms up, here it’s just snow and cold for a LONG time. Last winter the snow came in October and melted finally at the end of May. 8 months of snow on the ground is a long time to see white 😅

    -50 is not bad, as long as there is no wind, and almost no humidity.
    We live in eastern Wyoming... It gets down in the negative double digits here as well in the core of winter.. But as long as the wind is not blowing, it's not that bad.
    Last year I learned about clothing called arctic underwear... It is basically long underwear that is designed to help withstand temperatures down to -20.. it sure helps a lot..

      Totally agree! We lived in Laramie for a year attending WyoTech, that’s actually where we met! We always say, there’s no bad weather, just bad gear/clothing.

    And I thought it was cold here. Anyway, consider a guard fence around that stove to keep the little guy away. Also, cheap/easy reduction in ice around the door: put up a hinged door frame; just the frame, no panels/windows/screen needed, to block the cold air from getting directly into the gaps around your door. Hinges for easy open close, and a simple hook/eye latch to keep the door from blowing open. You can always screen it for summer later. Or, staple/brad nail a rubber liner/gasket on the inside around the inside face of your door (except bottom; use a towel across). Just thinking cheap, quick and reversible. Stay warm!

    • @FinalFrontierHomestead-i5t
      @FinalFrontierHomestead-i5t  6 дней назад

      Well, I don’t think brand matters in this case, even the diesel pumps in town are gelled up. Our diesel truck sat outside through the cold snap, about a week, it warmed up to -12°F today, we don’t have power so we have to run our generator to run our block heater, so we had our truck tarped, a diesel heater blowing hot air under the tarp, generator exhaust pointing under the tarp running the block heater, a battery charger on the main batter since the secondary froze, and it took 4 hours of this to get it started after that cold snap. You need to have vehicles garaged up here if you want them to start, especially a diesel. And you’ll need a lot of additive as well so your lines don’t gel while driving. Highly recommend a gasser up here.

    • @FinalFrontierHomestead-i5t
      @FinalFrontierHomestead-i5t  3 дня назад +1

      Because everyone runs out of time and or money before winter hits and locks you down. At least that was our experience. Summer here is sooo short and you have a very small window to get your land cleared, prepped and a cabin built that will sustain you throughout an Alaskan winter. In our case, we had planned to mill 1x lumber to make our own siding to save on cost, but our first summer we ran out of time. We got our cabin up, moved in, got the wood stove installed and I went into labor 1 week later, 6 weeks premature with our son and had to spend 4 weeks in the Fairbanks NICU. By the time we got home it was December and winter was in full swing. And we had a newborn, not a good time to be siding 😅 We had planned to build an addition this past summer and then side the whole building, but my husband had to get a full time job to afford living and building, we got the floor done but between him working, me running the homestead, raising our son, planting a massive garden, fishing for salmon and spending an entire month moose hunting and processing those moose our group got, we once again ran out of time. Living off grid with a family and building is extremely difficult. We are hoping to get this addition done this summer and maybe it will have siding by next winter 😅🤞

    • @FinalFrontierHomestead-i5t
      @FinalFrontierHomestead-i5t  7 дней назад +7

      Because no one has the time to finish them before winter hits and locks you down. Or you run out of money, this “Alaskan Dream” that so many portray costs far more money than you would think. In our case, we ran out of time. We planned to mill 1x lumber to make our own siding, but I went into labor with our son 3 weeks after we finished the inside. Then we were in the NICU for 4 weeks and then it was dead winter by the time we came home with our newborn. We didn’t side it this summer since we planned to build our addition and side the whole thing. Then we got too caught up trying to do too much and we needed more money to finish our build so my husband had to go get a full time job and worked all summer long while I ran the homestead, took care of our son and grew a garden. This was our first real summer here with Dawson and we wanted to get out and do some Alaska things. So we went backcountry camping, fishing, and spent an entire month moose hunting. We got too wrapped up in everything that we ran out of time and money again to finish building. Living off-grid, trying to start a homestead and building at the same time is extremely difficult.
