It'd be one thing if it was hypnotization they were using to make them forget, but they're erasing the memories, it's more like deleting a file and also removing it from the trash can, while hypnotizing is like deleting it but it's still in the trash can. At least I interpret it this way since they don't say that they'll just forget when they leave, but specify they are completely removing the memory from their brains.

Using the same analogy, I see hypnotizing more as turning a normal file to a hidden one (not seen, but still exists and can be found with some work), while erasing memories seems like this variant with putting it to a trash can (not seen, can't be occasionally found, but can be returned after).
