New tools & more books have been added to the D&D Beyond Maps Alpha!
Maps is a new browser-based tool that lets Dungeon Masters and players participate in tactical gameplay using maps in a shared play space on D&D Beyond.
Maps is an Alpha launch, which means it’s not finished: it will be buggy, features basic functionality, and may even crash at times as its user base grows! Our intention is to gather player feedback and continue to improve the tool with added functionality. We’re committed to consistent improvements.
Maps is included with the Master-tier subscription. Master Tier subscribers can launch and run a game on Maps for any registered D&D Beyond user. Dungeon Masters who would like to use the tool are encouraged to sign up for a 30-day free trial Master-tier subscription!

Try Maps, test out the new tools & let us know what you think! dndbeyond.link/yt_Maps_NovemberUpdate
As a player that runs giant barberian and a dm that runs a game with a giant barberian who keeps getting enlarge cast upon them will you guys be adding a feature that allows us to control player size
Dose tachticsl maps have suport on the maps ??
The new improvements are good. Noticed them right away and pointed them out to my players. They all liked them too, especially the ruler. Again... Token browser needs landscape objects.
@@haffathot same just i have to use monster tokens for preportion to be correct
So if I own a bunch of dndbeyond content and my dm's doesn't to share my stuff with the dm (and the rest of my party) I have to have a master tier subscription and then to use map feature for our campaign (with my content) the dm would also need to have a subscription?
I love maps, we used it on a new campaign I'm DM'ing and it worked great!
I cannot wait for:
1) Initiative tracker
2) Status markers (the colored rings shown here will work great for now
3) Spell effect rings/cones/lines/squares
Love what you've done so far, it really *really* adds a lot of value to DnDB!
These are essentials ! Great suggestions.
Joe Starr is back. Rejoice! Hopefully we will have dev update regularly now, as it was before. Looking forward to new maps upgrades and other app features as well.
Seems this was on RUclips not twitch. But would be great to see more updates.
My one gripe with this tool at the moment is how you handle scaling for custom maps, rather than scaling the maps to suit the tokens, it scales the tokens to suit the maps. This results in the fog tool ending up too big or too small rather than the same as the token like it is on the standard maps.
Otherwise, cool progress guys!
So happy to see the maps updated! This has become our next VTT because of how integrated it is with DND beyond. Can't wait for more features!
Yea I quite enjoy that aspect of it. I can make the maps and everything else like I always do, and just upload them there. Easy Peasy.
So, the ruler tool counts diagonally as it would in real life, which ends up showing 2 diagonal squares as 15ft, 4 as 30ft, etc. However, the default rule for moving diagonally in 5e (per the PHB) is that every square is 5ft. 2 diagonal squares, per the standard rules, should be 10ft, 4 squares should be 20ft, etc.
Counting every second diagonal as 10ft is an optional (variant) rule (in the DMG).
Will the ruler tool eventually support the standard method for measuring distance on a grid? Or will it only ever support this variant method?
Part of the issue here (I expect) is that Maps doesn't actually support grids, so measuring grid distance is impossible. This is something that would be a huge improvement for me, being able to snap tokens to a grid especially, and even more so if I can load in un-gridded maps and it could add the grid for me.
@@xyrillow6998 I'd like grid snapping too, especially if it meant implementing the "standard" method of movement on grids.
That said, I've thought about this some more, and I'm happy enough with no grid snapping and the ruler counting actual distance in all angles, but I'd be REALLY happy with it if the measurements were done while moving the token! The ruler is near for measuring distance, but I don't want to have to measure X feet and then move to an approximate spot near where I measured. I'd like to be able to drag the token and have the ruler automatically turn on and tell me what distance I'm dragging it.
Ideally, we need both - grid snapping and measurements per square (with diagonals as 5ft), and no grid snapping with measurements shown as we move the tokens.
Cool, but are you guys also updating/improving the rest of dndbeyond? I feel like improvements to the ui for characters and dm tools have stopped and the forums are full of complaints that are years old of things that have never been updated. :( i love your tool but this makes me want to switch to another platform.
Same. Makes me think WoTC tanked a bunch of projects when they bought DDB. The level of communication about this stuff is sad.
@@pure35probably. Why bother updating anything when it was (by DDB's own admission) cobbled together in the first place. It probably wouldn't be about to handle half the 2024 rules changes anyway. They're probably on emergency repairs only and building something new from the ground up. I'm sure it'll still be DDB, but they're probably throwing out the baby with the bathwater instead of trying to fix something unfixable.
Yep, that's how it seems.
As a DM that also hosts battlemaps in person on a Table TV, I'd love it if there was an option to open a separate window into Player View that I could drag onto the display screen.
This is what I'd like to see the most. I'm pretty sure Roll20 has a feature like this. I'd love to be able to pop up a visual on the player screen without loading a new map.
I love the fact that you're focussing on making it simple and easy to use!!!
I love the new map tool. It is something I can use for my in person games because it's light and quick compared to other TTSs which are overly cumbersome when you have to unexpectedly throughout your planned scenes and quickly throw a map up. Please keep in person players in mind when designing features! Thanks!
Very much this! I plan to use maps strictly for in-person play. I really hope this type of use doesn't get lost in the shuffle.
wish that encounter builder also recieve same love like maps. There was no single noticable feature introduced for it for very long time.
still waits to adds Monsters during encouter, adding friendly NPC, or hiding defeated opponents
I just started DMing Rime of the Frostmaiden and I was pleasantly surprised to see the maps available. Good job. It has worked very well for me and my players.
This is such a great feature. It's my first time as DM, and this is exactly what I needed.
kay this is good and all, we really need stream lined token making. I don't want to have to make a custom monster just to upload a single jpg onto the board for say custom art or an improved monster, when I have those stats elsewhere, and no, I do not want to manually recreate the stats in D&Dbeyond every single time. just a simple drag and drop of an image or token from a folder labeled favorites/bosses/ random encounter files.
Yeah, this
I'm stoked. About to start DM'ing in a month, first campaign. On the VTT.
We’ve been using it every week. It’s been working great. Thank you!
Yay thank you guys! So excited that we are getting closer to fully running a game on dnd beyond! Maps was much need and I’m very excited thank you!!!
Cool you recreated roll20
That's exactly my thought... man Roll20 has this for nearly 5 years, why not join forces and improve towards an unbelievable tool? The releases from the are super slow atm and they're reinventing the wheel.
Well, this is a great step! Once I can rename tokens and also draw on the map, I'll be unstoppable.
JOE!!!!! It’s so good to see your awesome face again and hear some dev updates!!!!!
We tested out D&D Beyond Alpha Maps with the Beta Encounter Builder and it all ran fine. It was a full 4-hour session with no hiccups. Wondering when you are going to integrate the Beta Encounter Builder with its inclusive Initiative Tracker with Alpha Maps. Both tools seem to be ready for it.
Maps is the best thing D&D has done in a long time, great job.
Are there any plans to add a function for spell effects, (cones, radius or other aoes) or conditions to attach to tokens?
Great to see dev updates back! Any news on the universal feature system or any of the other projects that were going on before?
Or where dev updates went for that matter...
Great stuff very excited about this. Its SOOOOOOOO long overdue. Keep going thanks!
Nice to see dev updates. What happened to the class features system?
@Dndbeyond I second this. It would be great if you could provide us with an update on the generic feature system. Even if its just a confirmation that its still being worked on or not.
foundry vtt in my option is ahead of the game right now and will see if the maps will compare in the near feature
As a book-only fan, I will say this is cool news. Looks sharp!
I NEED the token browser to include tokens for common landscape items!!! Please!!! I want to place bushes, stalactites, trees, perhaps even ponds and houses that can be resized like I hope monsters will one day be able to be.
i second this that would be incredible!
If you homebrew that stuff as "monsters" they become usable as tokens, obviously not ideal but it would work in the temporary, just grab a picture online and add that as the icon, set the size and you're good to go
@@tomsanford3329 that is a interesting workaround thanks for the info my man!
What will really sell this and catapult it ahead of the competition is the ability to import your own content or thrid party content. Then there is no barrier to using it. Right now I will not have access to huge amount of maps and content I have on other platforms.
Ahora falta que pongan los manuales en castellano y todo genial❤😢
Cuanta razón!
Is there a way to import personal artwork into a token? Players who want more options than the preloaded profile art or for Homebrew monsters and objects
ruler tool is definitely the tool that should have been highest on the priority list, i think next up should be pinging, or a template feature that allows you to measure very quickly for things like fireballs, wall of force, arms of hadar, anti magic field, etc.
something else used at a lot of tables are the rings that come around things like bottled drinks to signify conditions. this isn't much of a concern at really low levels of play where players aren't typically subjected or dishing out a lot of conditions, but once you reach like lvl 5 we start seeing a lot of that, and when there are potentially 10+ things on the board, it can be hard to remember who has what.
for the rings, i think thats what they said in the video the colored borders are for!
The tabletop is very stable and shows great promise. Cannot wait to see it out of alpha.
I hope that homebrew on Dndbeyond gets the same love and treatment that Maps is getting soon enough
This is what I was wanting!!!!!
We listened!!
Thanks , ruler and token menu are very very useful. simple but powerfull in the real case scenario.
Finally! this is a good video! straight to the point.
This is cool and all, what about the other features you guys were working on before the WoTC acquisition? Even a "Hey guys, we can't talk about that stuff." would be great.
Really happy this is moving along. Can Roll20 do this? Sure, but I own stuff on DND Beyond so for folks like me it’s awesome. Hope material shared with the DM from other players works in maps soon.
Would love to be able to rotate maps 90 degrees to better appear on my flatscreen
Hoping 3D dice rolls show up soon
Could you guys add active tokens? Fires, Lights, Doors, Etc.
That would be cool. Might be really complicated from a coding perspective. Dark vision, Devil's Sight, blind Sight, etc.
Very exciting this is almsot MVP for me to start using!
Awesome!
Npc tokens? Which books have more npc tokens, I just want more variations for every race
Please add Princes of the apocalypse to the Maps tool!
I am not seeing all those books supported on Maps. I am just seeing Candlekeep, Dragonlance, Curse of Strahd, and Lightning Keep.
No Wild Beyond the Witchlight, Plansecape, Keys from the Golden Vault, or Icewind Dale.
This is so awesome!
Can y'all please add support for the proficiency dice optional rule
Cool, kee up the good work!
I love dnd so much 🙂🙂🙂
Quick question is there an Eldritch knight subclass for the fighter?
There absolutely is: www.dndbeyond.com/classes/fighter#EldritchKnight
What? How else would you even know to ask that unless you knew it existed?
@@spooderous lots of people exposed to 5e through BG3, probably don't know what's available vs. Larian's homebrew subclasses
Finally!
have you guys seen Skyrim ai chatbot mod ? its amazing ,thats what dnd 7e needs interactive ai dm that talks to characters or can also rights script sourcing lore you create for dm in real time and knows all rules it could e paid monthly subscription to access , i also recommend changing character & npc level to hundred to fix the problem with unbalance after level 12 and you need to rewrite the mythology of course using all info you have already ,you could sit in group and all create mythos like they made script of battlerstar galactic new version & make mythology & planes of existence just a little bit simpler like Skyrim mythology fudgemuppet videos are great skyrim mythology vids and also completely redesign faerun or make new setting if you want old the myth and towns you can always get older versions of dnd thats my recommendation for dnd it will be amazing
That's great and all but it really feels like nobody is working on making old features work properly and well and instead we keep getting new stuff. I guess it makes for sexier announcements.
D&D Beyond really needs proper filtering so you don't get your lists full of stuff you don't own or isn't part of your campaign. The usability and convenience of D&D Beyond decreases more and more, the more stuff WotC put out without offering good filtering options.
It also needs to get the basics, the subclasses from the PHB, Xanathar's and Tasha's working a 100%. This is core functionality, Tasha's has been out for a long time, and yet the Aberrant Mind Sorc and the Clockwork Soul Sorc still can't use their spell-swapping feature. When spell management doesn't work a 100% and can't function as a one-stop-shop, it becomes drastically less convenient, not just the 5% that are missing.
You'd think Roll20 and a bunch of other sites would be enough for them developers to know a bunch of stuff to already add that isnt there. What's up? Why is it taking so long?
Please fast track this. I would onboard so many friends with DnD if there was a way to get them playing with me online easily with the computer doing a lot of the tricky rules work for them.
pls let us add video maps
pls
0:45 Great D&D product placement here. Marjory needs to get her audio check out. The acoustics there are terrible. I would keep here name and title on the bottom left of her screen the whole time. She was very professional, and didn't drone about things...
2:14 Elliot did great. No product placement, but that's just my preference. I would keep his name and title always on too to help us all know who and what he is.
Joe led the discussion very well. I like how he moved the discussion forward by asking questions. Like Elliot, no product placement, but he has a festive background and a very nice voice.
Overall, this is a good video. Short and informative with minimum fluff. The way things are going, D&D Maps is on track to replace my Roll20 especially if they integrate all the books that I have on D&D Beyond. I'll lean into this more tonight. Thanks for the updates...
A TOGGLE FOR SHARE DM Ruler stuff or NOT.. A toggle would be nice on off.. Share Dont share.. Sorry caps...
Toggles though toggles
Can’t roll20 do all of this already? Hmmm
1/10 of that Foundry VTT can do already for years.
It’s Alpha Bro, fuckin chill. It’s not even in Beta.
@@Bwomackusmchere’s the core problem. Yeah an Alpha will presumably end up much better, but ultimately this product is linked to ddb. And while ddb is not bad, it’s got bugs. Bugs it hasn’t fixed for years and features widely wanted that aren’t provided (for example, having ddb do the math for you when you summon spirits or the TCE sorcerers being able to swap spells when they level as per class feature).
And the competitors? You can do that there. They need to fix what’s old before they build more new on it.
Will you have additional entire campaigns dedicated to this? The character sheet seems very limited. What is the goal to increase choices for the character sheet?
