The book by Jordan and Walsh entitled WHITE CARGO. and some black historians are noting it now. Also an interesting book for age 12 on is Jewish Pirates of the Caribbean. In retirement I am able to read the history books I wish I had at an younger age and learn the truth of all things.
The El Andaluse (Moors in Spain) kidnapped people from the coasts of Ireland and the British Isles as early as the Middle Ages, they are said to have even come as far as Iceland... They went on "corso" as they called it (that's where the word cosar comes from, literally translates pirate here ) .... the men were often used as rowing slaves and often did not reach the slave markets of North Africa alive due to the harsh conditions ... the women and children ended up in the brothels .
Things didn't look any better in Eastern Europe ... here it was the Ottomans who kept the slave trade alive until the fall of the Ottoman Empire (1299- 1922). The word "slave" came from the enormous number of Slavic people who were kidnapped....again, the men were often castrated and many did not survive the procedure, the women expected a life of sex servants.
