  • Accutane can be helpful in eliminating persistent breakouts if you deal with deep, nodular acne. But who else is it good for? And when you should start seriously considering this acne treatment? We visited Soheil Simzar, MD at Ava MD in Santa Monica, CA, who broke down who Accutane is best for, what to expect, how to prep for this medication, and what side effects you may experience during your treatment.

I went on accutane 6 years ago. I wasn't the best candidate because I didn't really have severe/cystic acne, but what I did have were horrible break outs that never went away and ruined my confidence. I went on accutane and had horrible peeling skin, chapped/cracked lips, and occasional nosebleeds but after that my skin was PERFECT. And since it shuts down your oil glands, I didn't ever have to wash my hair. The birth control requirement is annoying but honestly it changed my life!

I went on accutane for moderate acne and it was the absolute right decision for me. The only regimen that previously worked at all was a combination of 4 prescriptions that would only keep my acne at bay, not effectively treat it. If a pharmacy was out and I missed a single day of one, I would breakout the next day. I didn’t want to be a slave to all of these prescriptions anymore and just get rid of it once and for all. It was the best thing I could do for my skin and I would do it all over again.

About a year ago I was so desperate for help with my acne. I tried it ALL & then some. I was on accutane for 6 months. My scalp & my skin was super dry all the time! My lips would be chapped all day everyday. I carried lotions. Moisturizers & chopsticks like no other. I could barely wear makeup. My skin was beyond sensitive to sunlight & I would sunburn in 10 min if that. My experience was torture. BUT I LOVE my skin now. It was so worth it! I would tell you to do it if your Dr thinks your the right candidate.

+Christianartist32 I've been off accutane for almost 3 yrs and honestly it was the best decision I ever made. My skin is clear! When I get a zit it's a random one, disappears quick, & they aren't painful. I'll get a tiny little whitehead instead of a pimple which is amazing! I'm obviously left with the scarring and my skin produces oil again so I get black heads which is expected as we can't expect magic from this pill. My dr. Moved me up dosage every month and the last month of treatment when I saw results I was at the highest dosage possible which I can't even remember what it was. I was on for 6 months. Hope this helps.

PLEASE don't take accutane!!!!( I took only 20 mg but even low dose was bad)
I am very grateful I became aware early of the side effects in my second round of accutane which was 1 year after the first round. In the first round I took accutane for 5 months on low dose for mild/ moderate acne. It drys your body organs and has caused me mild Fatty Liver Disease(which I caught on early), irregular periods, a fibroadenoma which I have mistaken for malignancy and caused huge pain and anxiety for months.
Alternative: Get an estrogen test and your doctor will prescribe supplements to balance your hormone levels, which in turn will clear up your face even better than accutane. I WISH I had known all of this earlier😭

This is such a silly take. We don't know how a LOT of things in the human body work! Isotretinoin works by altering DNA transcription. This effect decreases the size and the output of the sebaceous glands. The doctor here just meant that it isn't fully understood what mechanism causes isotretinoin to alter transcription.

Accutane is a great medication to treat acne and give people back their life and confidence but there are major side effects that need to be considered. It is not only recommended you should not get pregnant. In fact you cannot get pregnant and have to be on 2 forms of birth control while on the medication and get pregnancy tests monthly. If you get pregnant on the medication you will absolutely have birth defects.

I only recommend this drug if you have tried everything else and if you have discussed it thoroughly with your dermatologist. It is a miracle product, but it should not be taken lightly. Mood disorders and psychosis were on the official side effect list but only effect a very small percent. Other side effects not mentioned here were also on the list, so try to find more info.

you actually must use birth control its now one of the requirements. I'm 13 and on my 4 month and I still have to take it every day or I'm not allowed to receive more

Maren E I'm 22 and because I'm abstinent I don't have to take birth control, the only thing I have to do is take a pregnancy test every month for protocol

+Olivia oh that's strange, I know that you are MEANT to be on a birth control. However my dermo did ask if I was sexually active.. He said even though you aren't you best still go the pill. But if your like me.. Say that you are on birth control, but don't actually take it. (There's no need for me to take something that's going to make me break out, hormonal, fat and over all shit.) sounds stupid but I'm not having sex. So no point!

Under the iPledge program in America, I am able to pledge abstinence and then for my second means of contraception I selected male condoms, even though I'm abstinent ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    • @nimra7569
      @nimra7569 4 года назад

Capri 23 it’s a REALLY annoying process. so first you have to go to the dermatologist (obviously) then you’ll have to do a urine pregnancy test. then after that you have to wait one month and take a blood test close to your next dermatologist appointment (gotta do that eveymonth) and then if you look good in everything she’ll give it to you. you also have to sign up for iPledge every month otherwise they won’t give you the medicine.

Hello to all people who have issue with acne. I am 22 years old, and since I was little girl, I suddenly got horrendous acne covering my face. I tried all acne medications available but it was no good. I even tried many diets and advice but in the end i got some metabolism disorder and I ended up with even more acne. My last hope was to try special laser treatments and when that failed too, it seemed I will never find solution. Then I run across this page. It’s name is: *AcneCureOnline. Com* It was impossible to believe, and advice from this site helped me to cure acne! After only 7 days I had first results and after less than two months my skin was free of acne. All this thanks to secrets from this site

I'm definitely going to tell her that I'm not sexually active next time and to not assume that I am before asking me and not freak when I'm not using birth control.

    • @tatummelia6954

I think this may be old policy, currently you are required to be on two forms of birth control, one can be abstinence and the other can be a birth control pill or another form of physical birth control, visit the ipledge website.

It might sound stupid, but I love it that you asked "You only need to be on birth control when you are sexualy active, right?". Thank you for not assuming that everyone in their teen years is sexualy active.

You don't have to be on it if you're not sexually active!? My dermatologist freaked out when I said I wasn't on it and didn't bother to ask me if I was sexually active in the first place, which I'm not. Woooow. Assuming much!
