We first saw the impressive Mayer MD900 at Superbooth a couple of years back, it seemed inconceivable that it was created by such a small team and yet aimed high in terms of features.
It's now out in the world and ready to ship, although yes, it's a chunk of change at £2,958.00, and as they are a small outfit, stock is limited.
But if you do get your hands on one, you'll be able to enjoy an extended Virtual Analogue synth with 16 voices, four parts each with VA modeled oscillators, wavetable, sample playback, drum sequencing and more.
Everything is modeled in DSP and does a pretty good job of it, according to @matthsmatthsmatths who is taking a look at it for us.

Really enjoyed this review Matt. This was the highlight at Superbooth. Horst gave us an incredible demo on the Thursday. Had a Launchpad triggering clips and scenes. Went through the scope of the wavetables too and the ability to draw in and import your own from Serum. Also a VST controller in development. And it sounds huge. Its ridiculous what the MD can do and the price is justified for its scope. We went back on the Friday and Horst insisted we had a coffee with him and chatted for ages about his history - a proper gent and really passionate about the MD900 and its continued development.
Great review thank you! I love the design of this synth! In particular the visual representation of the mod matrix! 10:24. The movement of the different modulations is really amazing to see! 😍
I've only watched about thirteen minutes of this presentation, but I have to say the sound you are designing is magnificent and such a joy to watch you create. Also an excellently played nod to BOC if I'm not mistaken? Thank you for this review!
This is a very intriguing synth. It's basically software running on some sort of an OS kernel with hight-quality hardware audio I/O, a very good hardware build, and UI. I especially like the 4-part multitambrility that also allows you to treat those parts as layers in a single patch which allows for some very powerful sounds.
I have one major wish which is audio over USB. As far as I know, that is a feature that can be implemented in software. I wish more digital synth manufacturers would include this feature, much more convenient than having to run an audio signal to an audio interface. It would be like having the audio I/O built-in at no extra cost.
Other than that, it really sounds great, has loads of patch programming capability, and looks like loads of fun.
Sounds absolutly awesome!
you can switch to the wavetable oscs by holding the sel button in the OSC to switch to those and since it wasn't shown - they can do a lot. you get back to the basic wave algorithms the same way.
It’s a brilliant bit of kit & I Hope its hugely successful for them. That said I do sort of hope some mainstream manufacturers sit up & take notice of this, instead making same old tired synths, this combination of innovative features should be something they put on some more affordable mass-market instruments.
THey have now released a cutdown version called 'vibes' with the same engine as it's flagship

Did Behringer make a Nick Batt clone here?? 😅 he even went straight for the pwm
It's got some lovely sounds. Sadly because this company is an upstart and basically only one person, the price is pretty hefty. I hope enough people buy them to keep them in business and develop cheaper products.

I'm personnally having some eyes on It for some times, ... Mayer products, etc... And now, i'm happy to see it, this new version, in reality ! GOOD GOOOD GOOOD TOOL(S) HERE !
Thanks to Mayer ! Merci ! And,... ... , see u soon (of course...) With some sound design wlrks, then, WE have live control while playing Our well desighned work ! GREAT !!!😛
sounds really nice
Oh this looks quite nice
Wow! Would like to combine this with that new modmix mixer I just watched a vid on!
This thing is amazing.
So what about audio rate modulation of the filter ?
Or better , what's the update rate of the modulation nrate in general , does it run at sample rate or at fraction of it ?
Woah I thought this thing was never gonna come out.
Maybe you find this no talking sound demo of the MD900 interesting. Another one focussing on the 2.20 firmware is coming soon. ruclips.net/video/SDaVutFNaLI/видео.html
Look forward to your next vid
Is there really such a demand for VA that the existing (especially used) market doesn't already supply? Maybe not... I'm just always surprised there's so many new synths, I guess there's not that many people buying them and they're limited production runs so it's like a fine art marketplace in that sense.
Is there a Sub Oscillator as there is on U-HE's Hive? Because I don't see one.
Great review. You may keep it, it suits you well, no?
Anyone ? Does that Seqeuncer have parameter Locks like a ocatrack / Analog four sequencer? Otherwise the sequences are always bound to LFO modulations and I would like to have for example different Filtersettings without the need to add LFO on let's say sequencer step 4 and 8?
Anyone know if that sqeuencer is just a toy or really a serious sequencer?
REALLLLLLLLLY hope they add individual outs on it. That would be the moment I " GOTA have it !" Lol
Nice but for that price ill get a Waldorf Iridium just personal preference
So what about MPE? It's all the rage nowadays so I would assume that it should sport some sort of implementation but I can't remember you mentioning anything about that.
how many hp when racked?
4 part timbrality and 16 voice polyphony, so if you use all, in stereo you can play 2 voices at once, right?
Only if you can modulate via the sequencer.
Nice 👌 😊
Hi, first of all congratulations
Can you load the samples and play them in the noise oscillator or are the ones you see in the video already loaded?
Giampiero
You should draw an LFO of Delia Derbyshire’s profile silhouette
For some of you there is clearly a misconception, so let me clarify some points you made:
People are complaining about the price --> It is a one man company, of course you can't expect the price to compete with big companys. 2nd you are willing to spend thousand of euros/Dollars for analog modules just so you can make some "bli bla blup" sounds (Don't get me wrong I love this stuff as well) and not actually music. But yet you complain but you don't understand that you get a full groovebox to perform live! You can build a whole track and perform it like you are in a techno Club. Show me a Synthesizer that does that nearly as powerful as the MD900 does.
The Sound is amazing and so clear and crispy and has that big room ambience in the Stereo field.
Before posting some useless comment, try to do your due diligence.
If you have watched this awesome review you just cracked the surface of this brillant thing. And if you have constructive criticism go to the manufactures Website and contact him directly. I'm sure he appreciates that and make this and other products better.
Because some of you are hiding behind your fancy screen and act like you got the whole world figured out and own it! I'm sick of it!
So if you have a chance try to get the MD900 it is awesome! Otherwise DON'T BUY IT! NOBODY CARES! AND STOP WINING!
Well said fella
Well, your complaint about price complainers making "bli bla blup" instead of music... I then read the rest of what you write as the words of a musical gate-keeper. People in the 80s were saying the same stuff about rap and rap producers. Not music, and so on.
I only rarely make bli-bla-blup (but sometimes do), and haven't complained (or learned of yet🤣) the MD900's apparently huge price, so I don't feel offended by your comment. Just giving pushback because I've seen a trend towards musical gatekeeping lately. Sometimes it's with people who actually post some of their own music (like Jeremy of Red Means Recording, and some commenters) but other times, I wonder, if the commenter is so much better than the rest of us, why do they hide it? But then, I was thinking, well, if they're not hypocrites, then they probably gatekeep their own musical inclinations too! I've actually seen that, where someone kept judging everyone else music/noodling as not good enough, and I was like, let's see what you got! And they were like, no, mine isn't good enough either!🤣 I had to say touche, but at the same time, since anything can be best, as the crazy wisdom masters have proven time and again, then there's no need to hold out for some mythical idea of "best" or even "real music" that's probably actually vestigial from some long forgotten marketing campaign.
Some of the bleep-bloop gets on my nerves too. I'm not gonna lie. But some avant-garde stuff is also kinda musical, in its own way. I think musical tastes are complex, in how they develop.
Oh, I just got to where he said the price... that's kinda what it is, lately. They should see what Baloran charges for The Pool! And it sold out! People can get Kyra for less, or Nina for more (motorized knobs!) It's not out of line with current price trends, really. Out of budget for many, I think, is the issue, unfortunately.
@@GizzyDillespee Don't get me wrong! I totally aggree with you and I don't say, that the what I called "bli bla blup" music or sounds are bad. I too like this stuff and like the sound of the 80's and where it all started early on. But we are evolving and some people tend to forget that. Its perfectly fine to buy analog synths and spend a lot of money on them. Every one should do and like what they want. Thats the beauty of music. And for some people maybe a view sounds are music and thats ok.
But what I don't like is when people complain and don't do their due diligence, thats all I wanted to say!
Nord lead series has been 4 part multi timberal since the early 2000s with 4 individual outs. The Roland SH32 is 32 voice multi timberal (although the interface is ass). You can get both of those options for under $1000. Not crapping on this guy Bc it's an impressive one man operation feat but there are def options for less that do many of the same things
£3k for a 16 voice multitimbral VA synth without individual outs? Why is synth tech going backwards? Virus was doing more than this 20 years ago.
But now its based on Raspberry Pi and Linux. Woopdiiidoo!
Niche market and too many people willing to pay for it 😕
Id argue virus doesnt sound that good (and I love my Virus) and also misses a lot of the features. Its not about going backwards - its about improving in areas that matter.
@@najatiIf there were too many people willing to pay it, it wouldn't be a niche market.
@@GizzyDillespee Too many does not necessarily mean a lot.
Interesting. I watch a lot of synth channels and I don't think Ive ever heard of or even seen this one. Nice unit, but for that price I don't think it's for me.
Yeah, I have Phaseplant, Bitwig, Vital and Pigments.
dont FORGET next time.. headphones out to AUDIO in , and see if you can make a feedback loops , some people wont buy it unless it can
I like this device but it is just a Synthesizer and not more. The Waldorf Blofeld does similar things and was released 2007 - what happened to DSP in the mean time?
They should just call synths like this subtractive digital synths.
When they call them virtual analogue people like me that own a bunch of analog and digital synths automatically think inferior.
Sure you can make a virtual analog that comes really close to how analogue synths work, but it will always lack on the way that analogue synths are just a little random all the time. The best they can do is inject some mathematically modeled randomness. But it's not the same.
That said I use digital synths like the Blofeld all the time. I can make a bass sound on the Blofeld that is much more percussive and deep than even my Moog Taurus.
This sounds kinda fizzy to my ears, but I suppose for corny EDM it isn't that critical.
It’s sounds ok, but is it $2k better then a Mc 707?
yes
@@limbicbits really? Why?
Nice hardware plugin
Somehow this thing looks like a plugin from 10 years ago
Nice but expensive. 👽
Cool, but 16 voices for 4 parts and given the price is a no go.
600 quid more expensive than the Waldorf iridium keyboard version !!!.
Hell No.
Ich kaufe, ich habe Geld
Although it is interesting with its set of features, I dont like the sound too much.
Honestly even though it sounds really nice the price is offensive AF
Mehhh
Can it fucking shpongle or not?
3 grand for 16 voices when its selling point is 4 part lol
Black Corporation (and many other companies) would be hiding their synths in shame if voice count or multitimbrality really was a determining factor for the price.
Lmao for a 3000 £ multitimbral synth with no individual outputs
But it's "THE" four part synth!! Definitely not just another VA synth being hyped up by a fanboy/ brand associate
Another very mediocre and overpriced new synth. 3k for a VA desktop synth? I paid 3k for my Quantum. I think I got my Moog One for 4k.
Sounds like a cheap, horrible sounding, plastic VST. It should be priced at $800 or under or shouldn't be more than the studiologic sledge.
At least the Sledge sounds pretty good.
This thing sounds really crap.
You clearly no nothing about business and the costs involved in making something like this. Studiologic is a Fatar brand. A company big enough to sell a plastic synthesiser for $800.
Haha, people said that about the Roland SH4-D and when people started making their own presets and realised it was actually good. I think this will be the same -- it sounds good
Weird that you're going round to all the Mayer videos sperading your hate. Silly hater
@@annother3350 This synth sounds as bad as the sound of prison inmates on a hunger strike banging spoons on the bars of their cells while flushing the toilets in their cells simultaneously. Cling, ting, ting, whoosh! Cling, ting, ting, whoosh! It really sounds that bad. This is an honest and factual assessment. These vampiric manufacturers need to stop price gouging and over pricing horrible sounding synths that sound worse than some VSTs.
Great review, but stop moving your hands so much. It's super off-putting.
Fusspot
Don't watch Scotty Kilmer then. 😂
Very cool of you to publicly exposing your neurosis.
