I appreciate several aspects of your review: - The base model meets my needs. - The inclusion of two Thunderbolt ports suffices, and their functionality can be expanded via a Thunderbolt dock. - A Gigabit port is not essential for me, as I have one on my Thunderbolt dock. - There's a possibility that yanking the magnetic power cord could result in the monitor being dragged along, rather than the cord detaching. The same risk applies to devices connected to the Thunderbolt ports. Your review was comprehensive and touched on points often overlooked in typical reviews. It greatly aided me in making an informed decision to purchase my iMac M3. As a matter of fact, I'm writing this very comment on my new iMac M3. Thank you!
What I really like about this review is you also consider regular non-tech customers. Too many other reviews forget they are the main audiences or the iMac. Your video editing is a good example: people who care about more high end stuff will need the 16gb memory upgrade like you said but everyone else is prob fine with 8gb. Also, you refer to this as the “base model”; some others call it the “low end model” (looking at you Macworld) which sounds like it’s coming from someone too focused on tech people. Nice job addressing both audiences Miles. 👍🏽
I picked up an upgraded model with 8 core and 16GB. Glad i did as now we found out the base model only has one cooling fan. Mine has 2 with the heat pipe. Also love the ethernet connection on my power brick and the touch id login.
My wife too is awaiting Purple! My Son will inherit my 24/ M1 when the 27 inch M1 ships. this is as much fun as 1985 when I bought my first Mac! “Fat Mac” if memory serves!! Cheers from Virginia.
Great review. As a 79-year-old PC user and graphic and web designer I am really looking forward to learning this new device. Your review is very helpful, particularly since I'm not a complete computer nerd but I do a lot of other things. Kudos on a great review and on keeping it simple.
I ordered the pink/red base model 2 weeks ago but with 16GB RAM and Touch ID keyboard upgrade. I can’t wait till it arrives! Upgrading from 2011 iMac so will be a big difference
How do you like it so far? :) is it the low end model with 1 fan only? Cause I'm thinking of getting that one with 16GB RAM too, I'm just worried about the fact that it has only 1 fan and I'm going to use this for graphic design. Do you hear the fan or is it actually silent most of the time?
yes. most people use wifi. most hardly ever plug anything at all to their machines. finger print reader isn't a bid deal. yes. great machine for Most people. if you don't like the design or chin, buy a PC and shut up about it. the iMac looks fantastic, stop hating for no reason
Thank you. I just got the $1300 imac. It's already at 185G remaining so many people will need more space. With the external drive and a 4 port USB (I already use 3) it's really a $1500 imac. Those desktop backgrounds are nice I didn't see those on mine.
Thank you for the really great review, Miles. Your style and presentation is clear, concise, and easy to understand and a joy to watch. I currently own a 2017 core i5 iMac, and though I'm sorely tempted to pick up one of these in Silver, I probably will wait and see what the larger 27 or 30 inch model looks like. It's REALLY hard living day to day with the fusion drive in my current iMac though😅! Thanks again! Keep up the fine work!👍🏾🙌🏾
I just learned that the base model only has one fan. I haven’t gotten mine yet but this is what I am the most concerned about. . I run a law firm. My current 2018 MacBook Air is always over heating. I am always on Word, Chrome, and Adobe. I don’t use any editing, video, or audio work. I do use my computer for anywhere from 4- 10 hours a day. . I’m keeping my MacBook so I won’t need to fill it with files immediately. . My point do you think I will have issues with over heating?
Got a M 1 Mac mini and have two 27” 4K LG monitors. Plus a Thunderbolt 4 OWC dock. I’m happy. I probably would have picked up the purple iMac if it was real purple all over instead of being pastel lavender on the parts I can see. The back of my monitors face a wall so I’d never see the good purple color.
Great review. Down to earth and realistic. Thanks a lot. I won’t be buying one as I already have an M1 MacBook Pro. But I might ask for one at work. Currently I have an i3 Air with an external monitor, and boy does it struggle!!!
I just got one to replace my trusty 2013 27”. It seems to do the job, paired to a Thunderbolt 4 / USB 3 hub that works fine. Only time will tell. Certainly is faster than the old 27, but the display does not compare IMHO. The lack of expandability is a concern.
I love the design and love that they brought back colors, not happy about them leaving out so many features in the base model as well as internal features like a second fan for the M1 chip.
I am looking to get an iMac for Graphic Design, would the base model be sufficient or would the mid tier be a better bet? I could even just go with the base model and upgrade to16gb of ram. Any insight would be appreciated !
I'm a sucker for colors too. They are great so I couldn't just pick one out. I was debating on orange and yellow but after researching on the actual colors of those iMacs in person, I decided to go with silver. The chin is light grey so it's easy on the eyes and works with a lot of other colors out there.
Silver would be even cooler if it had “space-grayed” to say; coin one ☝️ the rear, that seems to be the color that’s edging out the rest for its timelessness. Will place order tomorrow.
Great review Miles! I’d rather you take a little longer to put out a long-term review for it to be more thorough and polished. Which is why I subscribe. I think I agree completely with your assessment. Especially with Touch ID and Ethernet. The port situation is totally fine on this machine. It’s a base model. People might only be connecting a flash card reader. The people who complain about the new iMac is not the demographic Apple is marketing it to. I saw it for the first time a couple of weeks ago and was wow’d by the design. Yes. Apple will sell these like hot cakes. Keep up the great work!
Based on your recording and others I have heard I think with a touch of EQ you could easily record a podcast or most RUclips voiceovers on those mics with no one complaining.
Thank you for your video! I would love to know have you noticed any over heating or slowing down due to the fact that there is only one fan inside ?? Thank you
Great Job as usual Miles! I'm one of the ones hoping that the larger iMac keeps the same number of ports the current bigger Mac ships with. I guess we'll wait and see.
Great point on the color. Your average guy: that's dumb, who wants a pastel colored computer Your average woman: oh hi It's not like they don't make silver for the people who don't care.
Can you use BOTH wireless headphones AND wireless keyboard and mouse at the SAME time without dropouts? This has been a serious problem as recently as the 2019 iMac (which I own). I've needed to add a third party BT dongle to get around this issue. That takes up a port.
Hey Miles, Thanks for the review, you've hit the spot when you say its the best all-in-one computer. You made another interesting comment about how it may appeal more to the female audience. I wonder are there any stats to show who is buying the color versions of this iMac and are these percentages up or down from the iMac 21.5" and 27"?
Newsub nere, I loved your review, and overall, the minimal aesthetic really stood out on my LG oled CX. 10/10 As farasam I goingto buy one?no, I am going to stick to my production set up, least until macbring out a solid production computer, imo if they relaunched the mac pro. For producers, editers etc. Id buy one. But,. I have had a mac with 16GB ram for a while now. And while it cost me an arm and a leg at the time, I am happy to say, me future proofing my imac in 2016 was a smart decision. I just wished i went full ssd instead of fusion drive. But that said, its been so reliable and durable for music production.

This is a good, honest overview. A lot of people want a no fuss reliable machine with good warranty extensions and a fair lifespan for the price. The old Mac vs PC fighting is largely irrelevant now that M1 silicon (interestingly a British technology by Acorn which was bought and suppressed by the big boys but the technicians who were mostly also Cambridge lecturers was refined and became ARM) has taken computing away from the hot and power hungry CPUs and GPUs which reigned for so long. The electronic architecture is a different beast now and as speedy as Intel and AMD unless one is doing extremely heavy graphics or industrial work. For sheer grunt some people will always have to take the hot path and Apple can do that as well on much more expensive products now and in development. I avoided Apple for years in the Intel period because of reliability issues and Apple's unfortunate habit of having its own 'ecosystem' still has overtones of '1984'. However, when the thin and minimalist fad ran its long race across all manufacturers Apple had moved on to hardware/software balance with cool silicon and some products such as the Macbook Pro became less slim and brought back a practical selection of ports aimed at users with many accessories in ongoing working environments. The notion of a quite powerful general machine for home and small office use had more or less died out but this new iMac revives it. Miles fairly explains just why 2 x TB ports is a sufficiency because we had all gotten used to daisy chaining but with the ports here a single good quality hub (some feature extra storage) should fit the bill. The keyboard and mouse are in the box. Amazing when one looks up the price of these and those who prefer finger skating can acquire pads way below Apple prices. Practically any Bluetooth mouse should work and with a hub a favorite wi-fi mouse will work via the hub or second Thunderbolt. Miles did not mention that the new i-Mac is lighter than many laptops. Let that sink in.

I feel like 90% of real pros actually prefer the chin lol, perfect for notes
I had never thought of that. :O
Ha! True, I’ve got notes on my Thunderbolt Display
I like it too… it’s not too overbearing

So what do you think of iMac after using it. The thinking to buy one, I'm just regular user by the way.
Great video. I just snagged a “refurbished” base model with 16gb and 1tb drive from Apple directly. Came with everything!

Can not wait for the larger iMac!
To be honest 1 core difference isn't going to be a noticeable difference that will leap out, nice selling point but 7 core is plenty good enough.
Apple needs to make colorful MacBooks now !
There are rumors that a 13 or 14 inch MacBook will be replacing the 13 inch MacBook Pro soon. Those rumors state that they will be colorful.
And watches both digital and analogue ones, or alarm clocks with the same colours and adding in new colours perhaps 😃
