I totally agree. I've been a huge HUGE Baldur's Gate 2 fan since it's original launch. For me, personally BG2 was always the best cRPG ever made, until I gave Pathfinder Kingmaker a try. I was surprised how quickly I told my friends that Pathfinder Kingmaker has at least the potential to be en par with BG2. They never ever heard me comparing any game to BG2 so far in all those 20 years. I told my friends, even invited one of them to play with me together on a rainy afternoon, so he could see what an absolute amazing game this was. After I finished my first playthrough I immediately rolled a second main character, increased the difficulty and started my 2nd playthrough. Without taking a break. Not even BG2 could do this to me ... I'm at 300+ hours now total, and I have already planned a 3rd playthrough ... You like cRPGs? GET Pathfinder Kingmaker. N O W!

Just finished the game, some tips: visit all map locations, for this, boost perception as much as you can, boost persuasion because a lot of exp comes out of it. For your main Character don't play anything crazy, play a barbarian or something like that. Make sure you have a cleric, everything that gives or offers passive or active freedom of movement get it. For the advisors use the right people, for example the warden should be someone with high constitution (look for the right Stat for each role) . On Kingdom mgmt try to rank up stats as a priority , then problems, then curses, then projects, then opportunities. For rank ups, after 40 level ups you will get a project to reduce the time to 7 days instead of 14. Don't stress over time, it's manageable. FINISH all companion quests and always pair Jaethal and Tristan on their companion quests.

I am now on my third play-through of this game. My first, I had to quit during the end of Act 2, I was maybe 60+ hours in. Bugs. Lots of bugs. My second play-through (about a month later) I had to stop about midway through Act 4, the storyline of which I was LOVING. Bugs. Lots of bugs. I was playing hard difficulty my first run, then challenging for my second, cause I was so anxious to catch up to where I had been. Fast forward to now. I am now at the beginning of Act 4, on hard difficulty, another 80 hours into the game. I have not encountered ONE SINGLE BUG. The load times are exponentially improved, the quest issues have been resolved, the sheer amount of work OwlCat has done to get this game to this state blows my mind.
Now, I'm not Cohh, this isn't my favorite CRPG of all time...however, it is REALLY GOD DAMN GOOD. I personally think Divinity OS:2 ranks just above this on my list of best CRPGs of the last 15 years because of how original it is, the multiplayer support, and the mind-boggling number of ways that combat can go depending on party and skill composition. HOWEVER, I think in it's current state, this incredible game is better than Pillars of Eternity, both 1 & 2 (both of which I really enjoyed), better than the Witcher Series (let the hate begin, even though I do love 2 and 3, so deal with it) , better even than Dragon Age Origins which I've put so many hours into it makes my head hurt thinking about. Larian Studios, Obsidian and now OwlCat have proven themselves to be fan-centric studios in my opinion. They are committed to their games, their fans, and their fans' feedback. CDPR has been the only studio I've been able to say that about until the last couple of years, since Bethesda, Bioware and Blizzard all seem to have completely lost sight of making good games for the fans, instead of games that are designed to make them more money and pull the wool over their customers' eyes as they greedily stretch their hand out to your wallet.
In summary, BUY THIS GAME...and follow-up...OWLCAT RULES!
Can't wait for Outer Limits and Cyberpunk 2077 - but who's coming out with next great Fantasy CRPG? Thoughts?

@@simran789654 The Combat is so different from DOS2 , but if you liked Baldur's Gate, Pillars of Eternity etc...then you will like the combat in Pathfinder. Especially on challenging or better difficulties. It is real time with pause as applied to DnD rules. And let me tell ya', on hard, I spent more time buffing for most of the difficult battles, than the battle itself took. YOU HAVE TO THINK about who and what you're fighting and prepare accordingly.

I snapped with this game when it got released when I didn't realized that they will destroy my city as an event even though I have defences and that was game over. I thought it will be a fight just like they have attacked the city for the first time (first attack). First attack was well communicated to the player and I knew what to do, the second one left me hanging unable to do anything but I was expecting to see enemy for fight. I wonder if that experience is the same now.

For anyone on the fence to pick this up: I'm really liking this game so far on hard mode, but you have to know what you are getting yourself into, especially if you haven't played Pathfinder before. Bugs are mostly gone. Expect to min max, save before every fight, look up stuff on google/youtube/reddit, be utterly lost at times, and just be in for a difficult game in general. This game is more difficult than Baldur's Gate, Pillars, or Divinity, on equivalent difficulties, and explains a lot less. Also, there isn't major questing in a large city like in other crpgs (slight letdown for me). This game is heavily focused on exploring the large map, combat (to resolve quests), and kingdom management. Quests provide the major bulk of xp, and have interesting choices based on alignment, but aren't really "deep," as they have more of a focus on simply adventuring. Would recommend, but you need large pools of patience, and an appreciation for systems and scope above storytelling and polish.

I agree, when it 1st came out it was a buggy mess after chapter 02, it really hurt how this game was received. Hopefully Owlcat learned the lesson & won't put out Wrath of the Righteous until it's bug free.
I adore it, especially with Turn Based mode now an official thing. Regarding what you mentioned about Varnholds Lot: it ties directly into the events of the game folks. My advice there is to play the game until you defeat the Stag Lord & start building up the barony, then go to Varnholds Lot, then back to main game after finishing Varnholds Lot. Afterward at a certain chapter/point in the main game you'll get a reminder to import the Varnholds Lot data.

My success rate for kingdom management events is 35% despite the fact i made sure that none of my advisors are ever inactive. It's like the difficulty for kingdom management has been trippled while i was doing the Varnold vanishing quest. This is chapter 4 right? Like WHEN THE HELL will i ever have time or resources to do any of the projects? On top of everything my councilor is gone, and nobody can replace him, and i still have no one to manage the inteligence. It's starting to feel like a boring stressful chore.

I dont know about Kingmaker because I havent extensively played it to its core yet, but what made BGII great was that even after my 6th playthrough, I still discovered new things, secrets, new items (Pantaloons anyone) locations etcetc. The items had lore ...I was hoarding every named items just to read everything on my free time, without even playing the actual game. From my experience, Kingmaker doesnt reach that scale yet (Dont know if its planned by the dev to keep adding content or not to that extent) BUT i do admit that Kingmaker scratched an itch that even Pillars of Eternity 1 and 2 couldnt. Is it because its D&D, or the setting or I dont know, but there is something that attracts me to Kingmaker.
Now, if only I could make up my mind on which friggen class to make as main character so I could start again, Ive been overthinking it for the past week and its killing me.

To add to my comment, I must tip my hat for the dedication of the devs, who kept on going into improving the game every months (which is way better than most AAA games recently released ...that I wont name)

I can confirm it: the game in its current state is nearly bug free.
I am in the last chapter now and I really love the game. Deep story, an incredibly complex combat system with literally hundreds of spells and items, likeable characters.
The current price of 12 Euros is really ridiculously underrated.
Ok, there are some things missing like full voice acting, open world, more diverse scenery etc. but to be honest, I don't care so much about this because the game is so good.

I am a huge CRPG fan but Kingmaker didn't grab me at all. Some of the things about Kingmaker that put me off were the graphics style, the kingdom management system, and the lack of voice acting. The traditional DnD combat system I also didn't like, I prefer when games iterate with their own stylistic spin like PoE and DoS. But, Kingmaker does have some aspects that I appreciate, such as the immersive world that is reactive to your influence, the extensive interactions with companions along with their personal quests, and the sheer amount of available gameplay.

    • @ronuss

yeh i found that true as well. Also a lot of areas are recycled , there really are not many areas in that game that look amazing. Because of that i didnt really enjoy expoloring. Games like poe just have some amazing locations that really look fantastic, really makes me want to explore and be in the world. A lot of kingmaker locations are just very generic areas without much interest in my opinion. The kingmaker management system is so rng at times save scumming becomes a must at higher lvls which i really dislike. I think thats when the Direct Dnd port into games can be a negative, kinda why i enjoyed poe or dos for coming up with there own system that work better in a game.

Voice talent is pricey (in most cases), so they have to do an analysis if the cost is worth the investment. Linzi is great. Amiri is a little over done, but still decent. Tartuccio, the little bastard, is well voiced. Valerie is really good. Not many large complaints in Chapter One (I have only had the game for three weeks so far), so no info on later NPCs or party members.) But so far, so good!

    • @Neonmirrorblack
      @Neonmirrorblack 5 лет назад +2

And that's exactly why I could never list it as the best CRPG. Save scumming was generally a choice someone made when they didn't like a particular outcome due to either being unprepared, or just wanting to retry that same scenario in a different way. This game actively encourages, and almost requires save scumming to get anywhere with the awful kingdom management. The game is like a classic CRPG merged with Sim Kingdom and it never feels good. Want to go exploring? Too bad you have to constantly babysit the clock on kingdom events until you have more than a few lands claimed.

Take it slow and dont be shy with 2 things:
      1. Looking at guides or wikis.
      2. Restarting if you dislike your character. Alternatively if you like your character but you crippled him/her during creation without noticing, you can lower the difficulty, although I think cRPGs are best played on the harder modes, since so much of them is fighting.

One of the big reasons why I couldn't get invested into Pathfinder as much as other big cRPGs is the toxic community that surrounds the game. Back when I played, on every forum or chat I went, it seemed like 50% of people were hating on the game, and 50% were defending the game by shitting on other games. I've rarely seen such a polarizing and honestly stressful interactions regarding an RPG. Whenever I went to read up on some Pathfinder builds or whatever, I'd quickly become appalled and grossed out. Compare it to Witcher or Divinity communities, where most people seemed to just enjoy the games and talk about them. Sure, there are fights there too, but they are about the game itself. In Pathfinder forums, not three posts can pass without someone shitting on Divinity, POE or some other game. Like, seriously? Incredibly toxic environment. Maybe it's better now, but that was my experience a couple of months back.

I thought it was a very mixed bag myself. Some great individual story arcs and chapters between certain companions and crises, but as a whole it doesn't have the meat to compete with the best games out there like Planescape: Torment or Mask of the Betrayer, or a Baldur's Gate II or Pillars of Eternity even. The combat is also a hot mess throughout, and very much a core component of the experience.

Also im currently playing this game for the first time and it is still very buggy, don't want to imagine the hot mess this game was if they think this is an acceptable state. Neverwinters nights 2 still has the crown as the best D&D game while planescape after so many years still has the best writin i have seen in a game.
