I listened to this lecture twice. Fabulous job doctor. I am a sea captain that had the privilege of reading Moby Dick while sailing on all of the waters that the Pequod sailed, while I was captain of an oil tanker. Moby Duck is like the Bible in that it continues to give deeper and deeper insight with each re-reading. So much of the seafaring that Melville wrote about still exists. For instance, the slop chest… to this day, our ships have a slop chest that the captain operates.
