Thank you. This was a very helpful and informative video, and I was very disapointed in finding that it only had roughly 300 views and NO comments. I am honored to be the first comment on this video, as I am also a cymbal player. I am in the Pit in my High School Band, playing the Concert Bass + Tam Tam, and in the time before and after halftime I am in the stands with a pair of 18's. :D
Very refreshing to see a video on flipping up. You're description of imagining flipping up and hitting your playing position at the same time is exactly what I tell my students. It is so painful to see cymbal lines that make no attempt to get from position to position in unison.
I'm the only cymbal player in my high school band and this is my first year with cymbals. No one in the county can really help me with technique or anything, so these videos are really heping with my performance!
When you're actually flipping, you have to remember to loosen your grip on the pad, or if you're not using a pad, loosen your grip on the cymbal. So when you push with your thumb to initiate the flip, loosen your grip to allow the cym to rotate and that should reduce the pressure you're feeling your thumb. A tight grip on the cymbal is not at all necessary while you're mid-flip
Nice man! I'm so glad you found them helpful!! I like both of those lines but I do recommend colts. My friend Beth who marched at X with me is going back for her second season, she's awesome! Wherever you march you'll get A LOT better!
I'd say start with teaching posture, then position, and then the sounds for each position. Teach crashes last since in my opinion crashes are the most important sounds to master, as well as the most difficult.
Personally, I'm not a fan of gloves... Most gloves groups will use will have like a velcro bottom right at the wrist. It more difficult to get your hand in and out or to do any kind of release and reloads. So the only kind of gloves that I would ever use would be the kind I used at Rhythm X these past 2 years. Check out videos and you'll see we're wearing these flesh colored gloves. I think FJM sells them now. Check with your band/percussion director to try and get you all some if you want them.
Logan Sowell can you make a video for beginners because I can't understand what you are trying to teach me. I have Meinl cymbals and they are 18" and I use bandannas and I want to be able to flip in and out with control and flip up in the air and flip with both hand to the side. I would really appreciate the help please.

Helpful, I'm trying to learn cymbal flips as a freshman, helps me show off because none of my superiors know how.
In am wearing straps, they are just really light beige. And these cyms are 19" HHX Viennese by Sabian. My favorite type and size cymbal ever!
That's great. Message me if there are other videos you'd like me to make
@XtasicRider Yeah it got cut off. I'm going to put up a video tomorrow or tuesday on flip downs. Because they are difficult to learn

@XtasicRider thanks dude. Glad to have a fan do you march anywhere?
what would you suggest as an order to teach basic technique to beginners?
@TheCrashsmith I march with Rhythm X. This is my second year with them
nice to see other people on youtube that get it! haha
What kind of recommendations do you have on gloves?
