  • This vintage transport film, part of the Look at Life series by the Rank Organization and produced in 1960, shows how painting of the Forth Bridge is undertaken, while also taking a look at modern bridge building, including temporary bridges. It reflects on past bridge successes and future methods of construction.

Great upload, spent a couple of years working on the Forth Bridge, been to the top and I used to inspect it with a team every Saturday night.
Now I live down the road from the Iron Bridge in Shropshire.
    Thanks for the upload 👍

There is still a Bailey bridge carrying main line tracks at Lewisham, S.E. London. It was hastily assembled in 1957 following a rail disaster which partially destroyed its predecessor. It was only meant to serve temporarily!

There is also a "temporary bridge considered permanent" carrying the railway into Victoria over the line into Waterloo at Battersea. Dates from the war!

Where at in Lewisham is the bridge? Never heard of that one

    • @stuarthall6631

It's between Lewisham and St.Johns, where the line from Lewisham to Blackfriars passes over the main line direct to Hither Green. @@Kmaster2007

The original bridge collapsed on to 2 trains after one, a steam powered express had collided with another electric service to Hayes and brought one of the bridge pillars down just as a third train was about to cross the bridge. The accident happened between St John's and Lewisham on 4th Decmeber 1957... when I was born! My family were impacted and heavily involved in this...

Factual error: The Clopton Bridge was not the only bridge over the Avon at Stratford Upon Avon in 1960, though it was the only road bridge. There was also the Tramway Bridge just downstream from the Clopton Bridge and the SMJR railway bridge (now replaced by modern Seven Meadows Road Bridge) near Lucy’s Mill and alongside that a footbridge built in 1934.

Must have carried their knackers in a Wheelbarrow those blokes just walking up the Bridge Girders holding a metal pale with nothing but a long fall if you slip.
