Anyone else notice how, before you fight a non-boss character in chapter 2, you see a version of them as a card? For example, the Inspector is a 1/1 with the hoarder sigil! …This is not the case for any of the magic students. Goobert’s card is unreadable due to dripping too heavily with slime, Spear Mage’s unsurprisingly has a hole in it, and Lonely Wizard is just. Pitch black. It’s unnerving, and REALLY drives home just how far Magnificus pushed his pupils.
That, and once you consider the fact that the whole reason they're undergoing their respective pain is to become one of his cards, you realize that this is basically the game's way of telling you that none of them will ever serve as a card in his deck, and their situation gets that much bleaker.
Magnificus was such a neat variation on the "wise old scholar" trope, instead of just being kind, evil, or insane like they usually are, instead his ultimate sin was pride; He wasn't evil, but what torture he put his students through was horrifying, though his reason for doing it was far from insane. He just failed to recognize that his protentional outcomes he was were not guaranteed outcomes, especially by the end of the game when he sadly fails to do the one thing left he wants to because he refused to accept an outcome he didn't want.
I love how at the beginning the music is playful and chill-out, but gets more and more sad and creepy to the end. The change is subtle and yet so apparent. It is like you are in a place full of life and dance but slowly begin to realize that it is just an illusion and in reality you are alone in an empty and decrepit place. It feels to me like a song about some sad and final realization.
While this theme is catchy and has a nice, humble and intriguing quality to it, it also can't shake the ominous, underlying sense of something being "off" that is present throughout. It feels like wandering the empty hallway of an once bustling magic school, now empty and desolate. Fits this part of the game quite well.

@@bloopahVIII In a full-fledged act where mox cards can be drawn from a side deck the mechanic really would be interesting, but unfortunately in Act 2 it requires way too much setup for what it's worth. But Act 3 proves that you can absolutely build a deck around it
@@caihly2443 yeah, the only problem with the Moxes in Act 2 (or the original game) is that they aren’t drawn from a separate pile unlike the squirrels. Moxes are already effectively the equivalent of squirrels (having 1HP, no attack and allowing you to easily play your other cards), so I don’t get why they weren’t put in separate pile like them. I semi-get why the skeletons didn’t have the same treatment, as they can actually attack at the cost of their own life (being brittle).
Mox isn't as bad as people say. You just need to focus on two colors to start off, and then only one color when you get enough cards. It's underrated how much you can get out of playing as many cards as you want with the right setup. The only thing that limits a maxed-out mox deck is how many cards per turn you can draw, but even then you can use one of the cards (I forget which) to draw even more cards. If you combine with an Ouroboros in the deck, you can win every fight with 100% certainty. Likely in a full Act 3 with magnificus you'd also have rare cards that attack and double as mox towers, which would become seriously overpowered.
If you need proof that Magnificus is the worst of all the scrybes, you don't have to look further than the internet's golden boy the lonely wizard. Sensory deprivation DID unlock the full potential of his mind and even seemingly allow him to survive the deletion process, but look at the way he behaves. Constantly twitching, will cling onto any other card you play obsessively, constantly overstimulated by the everyday happenings of life... Magnificus, almost certainly knowingly, drove him insane.
Yeah, Magnificus is using his genius for evil sorta, Basically purposefully sending his underlings through a life of unnecessary suffering whereas the other underlings of the scrybes either went through death or something less than only suffering
the worst part was that he didn't even cared, I lost a lot to the impaled head multiple times and everytime they just hoped Magnificus might have seen it ___________ in the final stretch, it hurted so bad when I saw Slime's painting with him bleached out, he's truly just a narcissist and the closest to a cult leader you can get in this game, ending with him not being able to depart in good terms.
All scrybes have twisted personalities. I like he easy it is to hate Leshy, how easy it is to condemn magnificus, but at least they're not P03. I hate that one the most. Grimora is actually alright though.
The temple of magicks feels like the place you go for a chill spot to study, but you leave the moment that Magnificus comes around to see what you're up to. You don't think that you're in active danger if he's around since you're not one of his students, but it's still better to be safe than sorry
Mag was too prideful of his cards to change them, too anxious to attempt to take over himself, and too frustrated with the ending outcome to ever be able to take over the game like Leshy or P03 did. I think if he wasn't so anxious, he'd be able to do much more devastating damage. Each of them have their own selfish desires and ambitions. Grimora wants to end the game, Leshy wants to play it forever. P03 wants to rule it, Mag wants to shape it to his liking. No matter how wrong he is. I think that he could've gone farther than either of them did. He could see the future, he could've put it to good use and predicted all the moves made, done something about it, taken over and then spread the game himself. I think he just wants others to see his art, because he desperately does want what he deems beautiful to last forever. He's too cowardly to change it, though.
I think Magnificus' relative inaction is because of his foresight. Knowing that eventually P03 will succeed, and Grimora will delete the game would tend to make anyone fatalistic.
I don't know if I agree with this, Magnificus' entire gimmick was repainting cards so I don't see how he's scared of change. That and his students were all morphed or maimed in some way as a test. I'd even say Magnificus is the MOST change-happy of the group

I'd disagree. Magnificus isn't evil, but he's not good either. He is weird, and does bad stuff, but he doesn't do it because he wants to do bad things, he just doesn't understand that he is wrong. Also P03 is the worst one, he constantly belittles everyone and everything, and overall he isn't cool.

Of all the mechanics I feel the gems are far too convoluted and annoying to use, and I only actually started understanding them when used in Po3's game

IIRC the best way to use Mox is tying it in with a half-Bone deck. That way, when your gems inevitably get smashed, killing off like two or three units in the process, you have an undead army waiting in the wings.
SPOILERS But play the Hex (another game by Daniel Mullins) if you haven't already, it ties into the lore That links Inscryption to The Hex (another one of Daniel Mullins' games) because there is a character in it called "Rootbeer Reggie"
Someone pointed out to me how towards the end of this track, it starts to sound more desolate and creepy, reflecting the nature of the Temple itself; it feels like this mysterious and whimsical magic castle when you first enter, but the deeper in you go the more it drops its facade and you realize it's just a straight-up torture factory. I haven't been able to listen to this theme the same since-it really is much creepier than I initially thought, with a very strong "something's not right. You need to get out of here" feel, especially towards the end.
how Magnificus is searching for the old data? We know PO3 is using the dredger, Leshy is using the fisherman and Grimora the well, but how is Magnificus doing? The game clearly tells us that everyone won the “old data race” at least once, so how did he win?
Shame the Magic side of the square was so neglected in both lore and gameplay. The magical cards were borderline unusable. You'd need an easily killed fodder card to be able to put down, keep alive, or empower other cards. If they died, no joy for you. If they didn't - congrats, you have even less of the very limited space available to do the same thing other decks can do better. Well done! Shame, that!
Well, I mean it’s pretty obvious that they all have specific other gameplay types that adhere to each other. Leshy and grimora for example as such po3 and magnificus have a good way of combining their gameplay types as seen in act 3. I do agree though that in lore magnificus was sort of shoved aside. But since he has the canonical ability to see the future I feel it’s mostly that he would rather isolate himself safe in his tower than interact and risk himself. It’s why he ignores his students, seeing himself as too important to have to care about them.

The magic deck isn't a deck that's meant to be played as constantly super powerful, it's a gimmick deck. I'd argue that it's more fun to play because the whole battle becomes a puzzle and not just "Oh no, let me grab my Ouroboros" (or some other powerful card). But that is my opinion, which nobody is forced to agree with. The magic deck is one which requires actual thinking and logic, you need to plan out a battle. That's why Magnificus would naturally dominate it, he can literally see an entire battle before it was even foreshadowed. Yes, in terms of gameplay it's not as optimal, but that's not the point of the deck. The point of it is for it to be fun to plan out, play and satisfying to end. The deck requires careful planning and preparation, which is why it's not a good starting deck against someone like Grimora or Leshy and it's almost impossible to beat them then because they simply have brute force powerful decks which can seek out your Mox and destroy it. But, again, you're entitled to your own opinion. You may believe that the magic deck is the definition of absolute dogshit and you can keep believing that, but I'm telling you that you can't see the full picture. Then again, maybe that's just not your playstyle, then that's fine. The magic deck requires a very specific playstyle to keep it up, but when you do well it's really fun and satisfying (I'd argue more so than having your 50/50 Ouroboros just destroy the enemy) because your strategy finally pays off, all that work and effort pays off. Anyway, that's my input, feel free to disregard it. I don't care about adding another, nor starting a full-on argument. Have a good day! :)
just a note, immediately after writing this i went through act 2 using only the magic deck and beat it with ease it's a lot stronger than you think and most of the cards don't rely on gems to stay on the board

The issue was, and is, and will always be, that they are *suboptimal* Other decks can do what the magic deck can, without so much space hogging, which you have not even *touched*, nevermind disproven. They are inefficient. Bye.

The magic deck isn't a deck that's meant to be played as constantly super powerful, it's a gimmick deck. I'd argue that it's more fun to play because the whole battle becomes a puzzle and not just "Oh no, let me grab my Ouroboros" (or some other powerful card). But that is my opinion, which nobody is forced to agree with.
The magic deck is one which requires actual thinking and logic, you need to plan out a battle. That's why Magnificus would naturally dominate it, he can literally see an entire battle before it was even foreshadowed.
Yes, in terms of gameplay it's not as optimal, but that's not the point of the deck. The point of it is for it to be fun to plan out, play and satisfying to end. The deck requires careful planning and preparation, which is why it's not a good starting deck against someone like Grimora or Leshy and it's almost impossible to beat them then because they simply have brute force powerful decks which can seek out your Mox and destroy it.
But, again, you're entitled to your own opinion. You may believe that the magic deck is the definition of absolute dogshit and you can keep believing that, but I'm telling you that you can't see the full picture. Then again, maybe that's just not your playstyle, then that's fine. The magic deck requires a very specific playstyle to keep it up, but when you do well it's really fun and satisfying (I'd argue more so than having your 50/50 Ouroboros just destroy the enemy) because your strategy finally pays off, all that work and effort pays off.

just a note, immediately after writing this i went through act 2 using only the magic deck and beat it with ease
it's a lot stronger than you think and most of the cards don't rely on gems to stay on the board
