I hunt public and have a 3 year strategy. Year 1 is scouting specific areas and placing cameras in late summer early fall. Year 2 is scouting the same areas in more detail, and briefly scouting areas further out around good pictures, focusing in when sign is more and again getting pictures. Year 3 is when I start hunting it, by then ik rut spots, bedding, and food. Ik general movements and usually have a few spots for each phase of the rut. Last year a nice 10, biggest in the area, was taken but it was year 2 for me so I only had pictures. A decent 8 lived so I'll be excited to see what he looks like (very low deer density public land)

Our property is 40 acres of bottomland cypress Swamp in gulf coastal east tx. Mosquitoes are insane. Our property also is split in half by a creek. Few times a year it comes over the bank and puts 2ft of water over the whole property. The following 5-6 weeks will be miserable. When I was hog hunting this year I didn't even care about Scent control bc the mosquitoes were so bad. Permethrin on my clothes, then sprayed down with off, AND used a Thermacell. The only portion of my body that wasn't covered in fabric was the eye holes in my face mask...and they were still flying into my eyeballs trying to get at me lol. That being said I believe the mosquitoes helped me kill the county archery record the first hunt I had on the property. We had no camp or anything. Just bought the property. Mosquitoes were so bad when I was on the ground but manageable up the tree with the Thermacell. So I decided to sit all day even tho it was early season. He came through at high noon just cruising through. Trying to get good pics with him was miserable. I was spraying OFF all around me and fogging the area around me and it would buy me like 10 secs of them not attacking me. I'm pouring sweat, off stinging my eyes lol but at least the deer looked good in the pics haha

My wife and kids were loud in the woods so I would have them walk as quiet as possible up creek beds and steep v draws to cover their noise. I would also get them into places that allowed them to see 60 to 100 yards for crossbow or gun.

If you can get some attachable arm to put on a tree have him get a small rear view mirror so he can look behind without turning around just make sure the sun is not shinning on it! Mark F.

Try to find setups where the deer aren’t likely to get behind him and use dead fall to block trails and redirect the deer
