  • In the last 30 years something has happened in America which is inexplicable. Crime has halved. When something goes well, it's good to know why it went well so you can try to help it go even better. Who doesn't want to see less crime in their city?
Many have rushed to explain the decline in crime in America, and among them, there is a theory supported by some scientists that claims that the decline in crime is related to reduced exposure to lead due to the ban on the use of lead products in paint and gasoline.
It has been known for two centuries that lead is a neurotoxic substance that causes significant damage to the nervous system that often leads to violent behavior. In the past, workers working in occupations with extensive exposure to lead developed neurological disorders and violent behavior, hence the English expression "mad hatter".
So some experts have theorized that a major reason for the decline in violent crime in America over the past 30 years has to do with reduced lead exposure. The chart we're looking at right now shows lead exposure in America from 1900 to 1990. At first exposure was mostly from paint, shown by the magenta line, and then exposure was mostly from lead in gasoline until the 90s and is shown by the green line. The blue line shows total lead exposure. In the next chart records crime in America and its rise and fall from 1970 to 2002. The researchers brought these charts together, especially the violent crime curve with a 22-year difference. The chart we see shows a parallel between final lead exposure and violent crime with a 22-year difference and there seems to be a correlation. It appears that increased lead exposure leads to increased violent crime 22 years later.
Of course, I do not believe that the phenomenon of the significant decline in crime in America can be explained solely by lead exposure, but the theory is quite convincing and many scientists have adopted it as part of the explanation. In any case, as citizens of this world we must be very active because the effect of environmental toxins is unpredictable. It is good to be alert to the introduction of new toxins into the environment and do what we can to limit our body's exposure to them.
However, we can also have a large exposure to toxins from certain foods, specifically from salmon.
