CaptMoore, funny to be commenting on a video 8 years old but this video made a big impact on me. The first time I saw the video in 2008 it blew me away and I decided I would see them someday. Last October we finally ventured out from Indiana and saw them in Vegas. Thanks!
I'm sure they used the zoom function on the camera mounted on the helicopter during the run. If you download the ten network qualifying broadcast in Australia they show the helicopter with it's camera setup, and even show it making a run down the course. (I think the helicopter hit a pylon during a prerace event sunday too.) If you look at the races tv broadcasts, several times you see the helicopter flying around taking video during the actual runs.
I think that if they hit the water at the speed they fly at during competition (well over 200 MPH) the results would be pretty much the same. I can't wait for the new season to start.
I recall speeds around 200 to 250 knots mentioned during the broadcasts, I would imagine the offical red bull air race web site would have more precise info.
