I love how much Adum cares about this. While I can't usually tell a great difference between 1080p and 4k on my current laptop, I think it's better if stuff gets improved and moves toward 4k faster. Adum pushing for that to happen means it'll happen sooner, and that's better for everyone, especially my lazy ass which could never get it to happen lol
I don't know if Adum has considered working with proxy files, it's what we do in TV with remote editors. They allow the editor to work with lower quality footage which is less demanding for the computer and then still export in the best quality of the original clips. There are a few tutorials for Final Cut Pro that would go more in depth, but I think that would be a great option to enhance the quality of the Quickies and other video edited remotely.

480 to 720 absolutely, 720 to 1080 sure, but further jumps in image fidelity seem less and less noticeable to me. Though maybe it’s because I grew up primarily with DVDs and other devices using RCA cables.
Interesting. Are these 6k videos always cropped with portions of the picture lost? Or is it only used occasionally to zoom in without losing quality and/or fake pan shots?
I work at a movie theater and I'm pretty sure we've never gotten anything bigger than a 4K file. I've heard from the (very few) people I know who have some work experience in the industry that pretty much 99.9% of movies/TV tend to get mastered down to either 4K or even 2K (which can then be upscaled to 4K) in the end anyways, regardless of what resolution it was shot and edited in, mostly because higher resolutions are more-or-less unnecessary and impractical at this point in time. Granted, it's been a few years since I've talked to them, but is that still generally true?
17:30 that frog had been floating there, listening to this rant, for what would seem like ages until eventually it could continue its fall. And you can see it wasn’t prepared.
Genuine question. Can somebody explain to me what Adum is freaking out about? The Planet Earth 3 trailer looks perfectly fine but Adum is acting like he is watching scratched up Super 8 footage.
As someone that's been watching shittube for like 20+ years, I remember when 480p used to look good. And if you went higher than that, the image was so damn clean. Now, even 1080p looks like shit sometimes, these fuckers decided to worsen all the qualities to basically blackmailing you into paying for premium. I ain't paying for something you used to give out for free, no thanks.
I think the reason most people don't care about the 4k thing is most people don't care that much about trailers. They know the film will look better so they don't really care how the trailer looks. Not saying Adam is wrong as if you care about trailers like me it is kind of annoying. It's just that the people who disagree with him aren't crazy, they are just arguing about different things. Most people can probably tell the difference between 1080p and 4k now but they still don't care cause the movie won't be released that way. Again, I see where Adam is coming from, but think about it, people would definitely be a lot more up in arms if the films were released looking that way, but they know it won't so they don't care that the trailer looks shit. It is annoying how they do it to hide bad effects, but again, most people just don't give a shit cause they know they are gonna watch the movie. Edit: some people will be crazy and say there is no difference between 1080p and 4k, but I don't think that's the only argument as to why people don't care about this (as said above).
I refuse to believe that screenshot is actually 1080p because it looks more like 480p, it’s blurrier then the rest of the video which for me is currently playing at 720p.
The HDR color-washout thing is a humongous pain in the ass. Worked on a show this year that had some iPhone footage and apparently Apple makes HDR the standard on their phones, so working with that footage always required two extra steps.
Gonna give you an insight from an adjacent industry. Not always, but sometimes it's just the clueless management. There's plenty of content managers, who get perfectly fine source files, but then for whatever reason (say, to quickly transfer it to a colleague for review) converting them to low quality and then just uploading that low quality file. They're not artists, nor editors. They're just guys, who don't know shit about the aspects of compression and artistic merits. Guy gets a good source file, turns it to shit and uploads it to official channel, because he sees no difference.
I feel like Adam is very confused about the feelings most people who were complaining about his 4k rants had because the people most willing to actively argue with him must have held that position. In the comments of the old reaction videos before listening to his audience, people were complaining that he would spend 25+% of the trailer bitching about the compression and it being 1080p and not say a single goddamn thing about the movie/show/whatever. It often didn't even seem like he was really watching the trailer and instead just looking for evidence of compression. Quite frankly, if he just complained all he wanted and then restarted the trailer to comment on it, nobody would care because then they could just skip the rant if they so choose and not feel cheated off a large part of the video. Besides, who the fuck wants to listen to the same 5-10 minute rant over and over again for months on end, even if they agree with you? Having a video like this to go into specifics and then just leaving it to "Wow, this looks like shit compared to if it was 4k. Just look at all this compression and blurriness, " on the actual reaction videos is far more tolerable and gets the point across all the same.
I FELT THE EXACT SAME WAY! It's not that his opinion is incorrect, as 4K is objectively better, it's that he bitches about resolution in every video that has him react to trailers. You always have to skip 2-3 minutes into the video of him watching a trailer because he inevitably bitches about it not being in 4K, or rants about how this trailer gets it right, so why don't others get it right?
@AluminumFusion22 Also sometimes it gets to the point where it's like people who say music sounds better on vinyl as opposed to CD and will call you an idiot if you can't hear the difference. I guess I'm a moron because I can watch a trailer for a movie on RUclips and not throw a temper tantrum over barely noticable pixel compression.
Hollywood man working in Hollywood, primarily Television and live events, most films and television are edited in two phases, offline and online. Offline everything is generally cut together with proxies, then after the cut is locked it gets ONLINED, which everything is linked to either camera raws or new full rez camera masters, Then after that is when you do all your vfx work, finishing, color, all that jazz. Maybe you editors with the hi power machines should be your online editors while the dudes with the low powered machines are your general offline editors. But this is all to say, I agree with Adam, no reason the trailers need to be 1080p output unless the editors working on the trailer have lower rez renders of that footage for some reason
The only thing I can think of is they don’t want to put free 4K footage in their trailers online… but that still makes no sense because of the compression. Then again try telling that to an executive and watch them as they pretend to comprehend what that means.
My conspiracy theory about the planet earth thing is that they’ve started interspersing CGI shots with real ones. It would exlplain why they refuse to release in 4k…
Adam's really just mad that he know this is something only he cares about and the average overworked citizen can't tell the difference between 480p and 4k.
I’ve started to render stuff in 4K because I wanted to future proof my stuff even if it’s just game reviews but this rant really helped me realize it’s important to upload in 4K if you’re able to.
*Studio:* We'd like this trailer in 4K. *Editors:* Sorry, our equipment maxes out at 3.9K. *Studio:* Go down one step then. *Editors:* 1080 it is! *Adum:* 🖕
1:36 Not to takeaway from Adum’s moment of supreme vindication, but I do have a question that’s been bothering me for a while regarding this particular point. How does one take 4K footage and export it properly in Davinci? I tried googling this awhile ago but couldn’t find a clear answer.

At 17:00 is probably my most favorite moment, you can see Adum's brain buffer twice🤣
Adum should just lead the crusade to have movies rereleased in 12k
“Shut up David!”
The unnecessarily angry reaction to a nature documentary trailer is hilarious.
It should be it’s own genre.
Is this a bit or does this guy hate his own audience
There is absolutely no reason for trailers to be uploaded in 1080 when 4k is so easy to achieve and the MOVIE IS ALREADY HIGHER QUALITY THAN EVEN 4K
Also, FullHD uploaded in 4K looks better than FullHD uploaded in FullHD, because they give different codec.
Hoping we enter an era of extremely terrible bitrate 4k so Adum will shut up
As someone that's been watching shittube for like 20+ years, I remember when 480p used to look good.
I refuse to believe that screenshot is actually 1080p because it looks more like 480p, it’s blurrier then the rest of the video which for me is currently playing at 720p.
satire?
It's compressed.
The HDR color-washout thing is a humongous pain in the ass. Worked on a show this year that had some iPhone footage and apparently Apple makes HDR the standard on their phones, so working with that footage always required two extra steps.
Yeah apple is pushing HDR since all there Devices support it
As a fellow video editor, when I see trailers uploaded in 4K, sometimes I literally cheer out loud
And then his smug little attitude when some companies did start uploading trailers in 4k with his whole "You're welcome by the way."
I guess I'm a moron because I can watch a trailer for a movie on RUclips and not throw a temper tantrum over barely noticable pixel compression.
i dont get people who complain about trailers
Just what i wanted. We've been blessed. PREACH.
itstartation is going right into my daily vocabulary
I love this genre of comment
Studios: Here's the floppy disk with our trailer on it.
...Testing for shadowban...
The 4k Grinch 😂
The only thing I can think of is they don’t want to put free 4K footage in their trailers online… but that still makes no sense because of the compression. Then again try telling that to an executive and watch them as they pretend to comprehend what that means.
My conspiracy theory about the planet earth thing is that they’ve started interspersing CGI shots with real ones.
It would exlplain why they refuse to release in 4k…
Watching this on 1440p 60fps .
Adam's really just mad that he know this is something only he cares about and the average overworked citizen can't tell the difference between 480p and 4k.
Bro 720p is like NASA to me still.
I’ve started to render stuff in 4K because I wanted to future proof my stuff even if it’s just game reviews but this rant really helped me realize it’s important to upload in 4K if you’re able to.
soo... what about the 1080p option with increased bitrate for premium people
From Reddit and Google Searching: most answers point to "bandwidth" as the reason studios aren't uploading 4k
4k?!
I challenge any studio to publish a trailer only in 140p
The trailer is in 4K on disney's channel...
Truly an "Adum in 4K" moment.....😂😂😂😂😂😂
how many tabs were open on his browser?
Nothing like a YMS rant
Even I who is watching on 480p, can tell the difference between the youtube screengrab and the still. So crunchy
I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS
Can't front, that thumbnail unironically gives me nostalgia (for simpler times).
*Studio:* We'd like this trailer in 4K.
*Editors:* Sorry, our equipment maxes out at 3.9K.
*Studio:* Go down one step then.
*Editors:* 1080 it is!
*Adum:* 🖕
I watched this in 240p to piss adum off!
Lol at the end - "I don't know what's allowed on RUclips." I'm not sure if I can show this video uploaded to RUclips on my RUclips channel. XD
1:36
Not to takeaway from Adum’s moment of supreme vindication, but I do have a question that’s been bothering me for a while regarding this particular point.
How does one take 4K footage and export it properly in Davinci? Genuine question because I have 16mm footage scanned in 4K, and I have absolutely no idea how to properly export so I wind up going the H.264 route. I tried googling this awhile ago but couldn’t find a clear answer.
I just realized my RUclips app now has a 1080p Premium option with a higher bitrate but paywalled lmao
I actually don't mind the music in 7 worlds 1 planet. Very good 4k blu ray to pick up btw
This was very entertaining 😂
And yes I think things should be in 4K.
i force videos to always be in 144p since i don't have wifi...
360p looks so good now lol i immediately notice it.
Unanimously excited for Planet Earth III
Thank you Adam from YMS for fighting the good fight
IDK man, I’m watching at 240p (or is 360p the minimum now?) and these examples both look the same!
Kek
i thought it wasnt that big of a deal till he showed one after the other and now i am also angry so thank you YMS
