    Last nite I shot 150 the first game switched my grip to spreading my pinky and index fingers went straighter and shot 239 and 199. Thanks for the tip

    220 league bowler before Covid. Epilepsy afterwards. Hadn't been on the Lanes in two years. Bowled 6/3/21. 5 games. Not one pass a Buck 50. I'm 64.

    This video is perfect for helping me understand the “why” in tucking the pinky. I was told to tuck my pinky, in order to help me come around the ball, but this video shows it should be the exact opposite. And now I actually understand and see what the reaction is. Thanks!

    1:03 Great analogy between the shapes created from up the back of the ball it versus around the side. Shapes down lane creates the pin action that creates pin carry.

    Awhile back you had a lesson on throwing practice shots right of your normal target line. I had 3 opposing bowls throwing around 1st arrow. I'm a 175 avg bowler but that night I had a 662 came in second place in the sweeper for a cool $110

    I have one of two ways I generate rev's, one is two cuffs it and like a yo-yo flick it off my hands from the finger-tips, only I don't flick up, I flick my hand up and to the side, which creates a nice gyro spin, the other way is right as I bring the ball back, I bring my wrist into my hips to put the ball on its side, that is far over-reacting balls. One of the most important things to hooking the ball and one issue I ran into for years, is gripping the ball too tight and not using tape. For years I never got the revs I wanted and it was all due to the Vulcan death grip I put on my ball. The day I went to tape, my revs doubled.

    Thank you for sharing that I have a question on the cross overstep how exaggerated should it be. Would love to see you do a piece on that could watch you bowl all day every day. Great job 🎃👍

      Thanks for watching and thanks for the great question. Even though it's referred to as the cross over step, it really shouldn't cross over past the previous step. Ideally that "cross over" step should end up just more in front of the previous step to help to create room for the swing.     Very good, but since I've had to start wearing a Roby III brace after injuring my wrist, I'm not finding many that can explain how to do it now. Now I'm coming straight up the back 95% of the time. Without the brace, I am now able to get a good 20-25 frames.

    Thanks for the video! I always assumed that going up the back was for straight shots but watching the video helped me get past that, I’ll have to try it out when I bowl next since I always kind of went along the top and side.

    My issue is muscling the ball down and/or turning the ball too early (before it’s off the thumb). Will have to try the pinky finger trick.

      When you go back into your arm swing do not engage any muscles. Let gravity bring your ball down in a smooth continuous motion. Just before releasing engage your muscles and hook the ball. Relax your muscles in the downswing. This helped me alot.

      Kevin Scarborough bad habits are hard to break. I am doing it less and less though. Better timing has helped a lot with that as well.

      @@TheVlad1616 it takes a lot of time...I did this for years and I’m almost fully 100% gravity driven on my swing now and it’s so much easier for repeatability on shots.

    When the lanes break down what's the best thing to do? Come around it super hard or out the back?

      Hi there! It's super difficult to give a general answer due to the fact that the lanes are different each time. However, "generally speaking," when the lanes start to burn up and break down, more rotation is going to be beneficial because it is going to help your ball get through all of the friction and retain more energy for when it exits the pattern. Again, it all depends on what shape you're trying to create on the lane, so there is no perfect answer to this.

    Nice video. With fresh oil I stay behind the ball nice and easy to the pocket. When we practice lanes are dry i go to a ball that hooks less and have to practically break my arm to get more speed to stay in the pocket any other ideas. Thanks 😊.

      That's why I only practice on days after leagues are played. Still oil out there. Weekends suck for practicing.

      @@kevinscarborough9982 I am good friends with all the Managers at the lanes and even though we know when leagues are they just don't know how many times there going to oil. I don't mind the challenge of a semi dry lane i just don't want to kill my arm to bad 57 years old.😀😃🙂

      You have to stay in the oil. If the 10 board is dried up or carried down, it's best to make parallel moves towards the center of the lane. So if you were striking at the 10 board and then after a few frames your ball starts to leave 4 pins, it's best to move in increments of 3. Like 3 with you feet and 2 with your eyes. So if you were standing on board 17 and throwing over 10 you'd then stand on 20 and throw over 12-13 in order to make your ball skid longer down the lane. The break point will always be the same spot down lane. So if the lane pattern is 40 feet, the bowling ball will start to hook left or right at 40 regardless of whatever board your ball crosses at that time. A lot of people get stuck on pattern length minus 31. So 40-31=9 the 9 board being the break point into the pocket. But if your ball hooks more or less will be the determining factor. They say throw at the 9 board at 40 feet and have your ball hook into the pocket? What if your ball only hooks 5 or 6 boards? You'll hit light pocket and cause yourself lots of problems. The main goal is to watch your ball and keep a mental note in your head on how much hook your ball has while you're playing. That's why this game is so difficult is because it's a struggle to keep the skid hook roll phase of your ball in check from frame to frame. Never second guess your bowling ball because the ball never lies to you. Whether your ball hits the pocket and strikes or comes up high or light it's telling you what you need to do with your feet and eyes on your next shot. Hopefully this helps and good luck with your bowling:-)

    I have to adjust my release every dang night and it is a pain in the butt. I like those nights when you can just stick with your most comfortable release all night. I doubt 5% of league bowlers think to or are capable of doing this. If you want to maintain a high average, you have to put up with the annoyance, as well as deal with nights when your adjustments don’t work.

      Hey there! Some people do use a tucked pinky to achieve higher rotation. It is all about what feels best for you and in your case, what allows your hand to rotate around the ball most consistently when trying to achieve higher rotation!

      Need to be very careful about tucking your pinky finger because you can very easily damage tendons in your ring finger.

    Νice video. But you forgot to shoot a high axis rotation with the pinky tucked in. That shot also had the pinky spread as with the low axis.

      It takes time and a lot of practice! Make sure to remember the wrist and elbow are two totally different parts of the arm, and you can rotate the wrist without moving the elbow! Keep working at it!

      Think of it more like throwing a football with an underhand spiral. Thumb comes out of the ball, and your fingers come around from 6 o’clock to 3 when you let it go

      Once you have the ball in your hand position regardless of where it's at, try to maintain that position throughout the entire swing. You don't allow your wrist to break at anytime during your swing. This will keep your hand below the equator of the ball at the release. Put your hand in the ball and let your hand relax naturally holding the ball at your side. You will notice that your thumb and fingers are holding the ball on the top half of the bowling ball. Now flex your wrist to make it perfectly flat or slightly cupped and the ball will rise and your fingers will be below the equator is where you want them. Then while your wrist is in that firm position, turn your index finger so that it points straight down to the floor. This is the correct position you want your hand, wrist, and ball to match this position at address and throughout the entire swing. Relaxed hand with the firm wrist and allow the ball to swing past your upper body without leaning too far forward and the bowling ball will travel down the lane in a nice tight spiral. Swing at the foul line like your trying to brush the lane arrows with the tips of your fingers. You want the feeling that your hand is chasing the ball down the lane rather lifting up towards the ceiling. This gets you to roll the ball forward down rather than lifting up on the finger holes during the release. It takes some practice to get used to especially if you've been doing everything that feels comfortable to you. Your lane accuracy will improve as well. Good luck.

      @@badknees82 Most of the time when you get your thumb hung up in your ball is because of over rotation of your hand at release. If your thumb is at 8 or 9 o'clock at your release point and your thumb hole is a bit snug you'll hang up in the ball. Any thumb position from 10 to 3 as long as your wrist is firm throughout your swing you shouldn't have any issues with your thumb hanging up. If you do, have your pitch in the thumb hole looked at.
