This film is such a triumph, and a tribute to the genre of "witch stories" and New England heritage.. as lifelong New Englander, it really resonated with me. Beautifully done, and the best ending to this sort of film, ever~ Perfect.
"Your character is the most non-believer" Wait what? People say such weird shit about this movie that I start wondering if I even saw the same movie at all.
I think he means refusing to believe in witches, and his children being possessed. He´s definitely the most religious character in the movie, but he´s also the one who´s saying things like: "This is not a witch, something explainable must be happening here" through the entire film.
I think the point of that was because Ralph’s character moves the family out of the safety of the town due to his own stubbornness and not godliness as we are first led to believe.
Shoutout to Jay Bauman at Red Letter Media for the high praise recommendation - I'm a few years late to seeing the film, but very glad that I didn't miss it.
Black phillip was my favorite part of the film. Loved the witch. So different from your typical horror movie. Plus the atmosphere works well to bring up feelings of paranoia and anxiety. The symbolism was awesome and the actors were great. The folklore was very accurate as well.

As a fan of horror, I always feel that I get the short end of the stick when I see the trailers for movies, spend the money at the theatre and realize I just saw the best parts of the film in the trailer; everything else was a disappointment. I experienced none of that with this film, which was incredible. I was transported to the 17th century visually and mentally. This film gets inside your head immediately and builds the tension and horror from there. Unlike many others, this film will not be forgettable. Black Phillip was a plus.
@GiRayne 100% agreed about the trailers spoiling the imagery, so Even if they are portraying a misleading narrative, the visuals are spoiled non the less. The first time this spoiled a movie for me was Iron Man 3, and while I think it has a number of big problems anyway, I would have enjoyed the movie much more if I wasnt constantly thinking "Ok, so when is the scene with this and that going to happen?". Ever since then, Ive avoided trailers for movies Im interested in like the plague, and it has paid off Immensely, because once in a while I check them after the fact to see if they still do this crap, and yup - just Gotta spoil those moneyshots...
I kinda like how he said that William was a non believer. He obviously was very Christian but his wife, not by words but by actions, was a more genuine believer. She had no doubt and automatically assumed Thomasin was a witch, William had the demeanor of “well let’s not jump to any conclusions” his wife was more intense about her faith than him
Great film. In school in the 70’s , we were taught about Puritans in the New World. Great movie. Great respect to the Bible and great ending thx to Black Philip. “Wust thou like to live deliciously?” Classic
I believe he was referencing The Golden Bough, by James George Frazer. Not specifically about white witches, but it has been highly influential to the modern 'wicca' followers and so-called 'Gardnerian' witches.
pretty sure he never said it either it was masked over or they stitched up multiple lines from the film. pretty sure he said "the wood" multiple times. the same goes for the mother. she didn't actually say "this is witchcraft" in the movie. in that scene she said something like "does this not look like withcraft?"
"You guys shot in Virginia, right?" "Your character was the most non-believer of them" to the guy whose character was so overly pious he caused his own family to go into exile. Yeah, this interviewer is an ignorant ass.
Bernie O'Connor I kinda get the non believer thing though. He was definitely Christian but his wife was more intense and firm with her faith, like she automatically assumed Thomasin was a witch and seemed really stubborn in her beliefs, whereas he had kind of a “let’s not jump to conclusions.” She just seemed more intense about her faith, but I’m not saying he wasn’t Christian he def was.
I agree with Ralph one of my think about witches I'm on went to Wizard of Oz first speaking of Wizard of Oz can you play character in Wizard of Oz, Ralph
I know I love Ralph's voice it's actually very soothing and comforting I don't know why the first time I saw him on a movie I could have swore I knew him maybe from before this life nobody has any input let me introduce myself my name's Amanda my father made me promise him I wouldn't find out who I was until now so any help anybody would like to throw in there just even speculation would be great
See, 100% agree and understand Robert's perspective on understanding the darkness. Being a fan of "horror" does not imply a personal interest. However, understanding the darkness, that is not just fictional, but a real active presence in the world, is key to understanding goodness. Have you ever seen those people that shun discussions of "darkness" or "malevolence" while saying "one must only focus on the good and the light"? While watching those very same people, in action, violate every law of "goodness" or Godliness". It is very Lovecraftian and Cthuluish, which, by the way, Dagon, is very real and permeates American culture. It's everywhere you look, such as Starbucks Coffee, and yet those that have no understanding of Cthulu, are blind to its everpresence. Dagon is the enemy of God. It's actually incredibly creepy and frightening, as a well-read fan of horror, and Lovecraft, to see it in every dau Americana. Corn, cows, and Cthulu. Very, very real. Dagon was the god of the Philistines. This image shows that the idol was represented in the combination of both man and fish. The name "Dagon" is derived from "dag" which means "fish." In the King James Version of the the text reads: And he saith unto them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishmen.”
I love living in this country. Why do people always talk about how everything in this country is bad, stupid, bizarre, weird, wrong or evil? Jesus fucking Christ.
This interviewer really Doesn’t seem to understand the premise of the movie, or the history. Possibly not the best person to be interviewing the creative and actor of a movie with such depth in story, history, mythology and artistry. Great movie though!
I want to know why we keep talking about witches and not warlocks I also want to know why is a God not Pagan but a goddess is Pagan if a goddess is Pagan then a God is pagan unless you're God is a homosexual it doesn't sound right because he created Adam with a help meet so where do you come up with that idea from
The move was extremely well done. The acting and costumes were perfect. The mood it captured was perfect. My only complaint is the ending. "The devil wins" is a tired formula and too predictable. I still like the movie. The 2 small children are adorably cute and it adds to both the creepiness and helps humanize this family. Whoever cast this movie should cast every movie made from now on. Eggers is very good with the English language but he speaks like a teenaged girl. Like, like, like, like, like, uh, uh, uh, ya know, ya know. He should present himself like a grown man with a good vocabulary and stop condescending to people. Sorry to scold but I had to. Great movie.

One of my fav movies. That guy is a fantastic actor
I imagined Robert Eggers as some stuffy old nerd.
I'm pleasantly surprised that he's such a handsome young guy.

I want to act in his next film with Ralph. Awesome talent.
Yorkshire, where the grass in greenest and the accent glorious.
Chris Finch - bloody good rep
With the exception of Sean Bean, I’ve always thought that Ralph Ineson would have played a great Boromir in “The Lord of The Rings”.

Easily the best horror film from the last 15 years
Awesome movie, great actors. Congrats!
What is this version of the trailer featuring a Haxan Cloak track ???
When in the movie did he say, "there's evil in the wood."? I think that was masked over the video for the trailer.
pretty sure he never said it
either it was masked over or they stitched up multiple lines from the film. pretty sure he said "the wood" multiple times.
the same goes for the mother. she didn't actually say "this is witchcraft" in the movie. in that scene she said something like "does this not look like withcraft?"
I ain’t gay but Ralph and Robert are both smokin hot
I think this movie was well made and directed ,
It was sick ,! In a good sense .
Eggers should do a movie with both ineson and dafoe as his leading characters.
Let us not forget that Ralph Ineson betrayed Theon Greyjoy and left him at the mercy of the Boltons.
Bloody good rep
One in the bum no harm done
Why did I not see this film? . dvd on my list.
It was a great film
Eggers has Jason Momoa eyes.
Nightman Cometh eyes.
i swear to god he voice acted in a battlefield game as one of the brits his voice sounds super similar to one of the multiplayer voices
