There are numerous interesting things about this war, from it being the start of Lincoln’s career in federal politics to the last stand of Henry Clay, one of the best major party candidates to never become president. Actually if you look at deaths as a percentage of forces deployed, it is one of America's largest. The Americans deployed 78,718 men and if non-battle deaths are included, the Americans lost 13,283 men. That means that of the 78,718 American soldiers who served, 13,283 died, constituting a casualty rate of 16.87 percent. By comparison, the casualty rate was 2.5 percent in World War I and World War II, 0.1 percent in Korea and Vietnam, and 21 percent for the Civil War. For the Mexicans it was quite bad too, 82,000 Mexicans took up arms in the war. If non-combat military deaths and civilian deaths are included, then the Mexican death toll reached up to 25,000 according to "Warfare and Armed Conflicts: A Statistical Encyclopedia of Casualty and Other Figures, 1492-2015, 4th edition". So the battle deaths represented in the video are just a microcosom of the casualties actually suffered in the war.

President James K. Polk actually wanted even more territory from Mexico, he wanted basically everything that wasn't too populated north of Mexico City. However the major generals of the war such as Sherman and Taylor were part of the opposition party (the Whigs) and they didn't want to add too much land to the slave-holding south so they settled for California, New Mexico and Western Texas. Honestly the United States had such an overwhelming victory in this war that it could have just taken whatever it wanted by the time it was over, there was little Mexico could do about it. Fun fact, Mexico fully expected to easily beat America and several European powers such as Spain, France and Prussia also dismissed America in this war. History can be quite funny sometimes!

Mexican-American War was a conflict between the United States and Mexico that took place from 1846 to 1848. The underlying causes of the war were territorial disputes between the two nations, particularly over the Texas border and the territory that is now California, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, and parts of Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas, and Oklahoma. The war began on April 25, 1846, when a detachment of American troops under the command of General Zachary Taylor clashed with Mexican troops on the northern bank of the Rio Grande. The conflict quickly escalated, and President James K. Polk asked Congress to declare war on Mexico on May 13, 1846. The United States had a significant advantage in the conflict, with a larger and better-equipped army and navy. The war ended with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, signed on February 2, 1848. Under the terms of the treaty, Mexico ceded over 500,000 square miles of territory to the United States, including present-day California, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, and parts of Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas, and Oklahoma. The war had a significant impact on both the United States and Mexico. For the United States, it solidified its position as a major power on the North American continent and contributed to its westward expansion. For Mexico, the war was a significant blow to its territorial integrity and national pride, and it contributed to political instability and economic difficulties that lasted for decades.

The same they tried to invade Canada before, but since they were massacred the better they went against the weakest country and where they had many Americans living on their land
The land was very sparsely populated. The challenges of running logistical chains through the desert meant that the US was always going to have an overwhelming advantage due to the proximity of its heartland to those regions. All it took was the US actually deciding to project its power into them for them to fall under US control. Also Mexico was undergoing its own political crises at the time.
They had very little resistance, I mean there where battles, especially with the retaking of Los Angeles, but these were, one ortwo hour skirmishes with hundreds of men, not the day long- thousand men affairs of the Civil Was, and once the US armies reach the the major town they just declared all the lands theirs, and it effectively was with our much challenge, the western US was literally won by just walking into it.

@@Tytoalba777 Even then, this war appears to be comparable in scale to the War of the Bavarian Succession, a war of notably smaller significance from half a century earlier.
@@jackschirmer9508 Are those numbers are actually for deaths though? Not overall casualties?
@@fehervari98 Yes, just deaths. But again, most deaths were from disease, starvation, accidents, etc. The US suffered 4,152 wounded as well. I could not find any reliable numbers on the Mexican wounded however.

US and Mexico: peacefully exist
Texas: YEEHAW
Adam Defibaugh wth are you talking about? Just surprise me how little is spoken about this war in both countries (in Mexico we just call it INTERVENTION).
Brief Summary:
-Mexico was a chaos in 1800’s (lots of separatism)
-Just one republic gained “independence” (TEXAS) with ONE CONDITION: dont join the US
-Texas joined the US and claimed extra land
-US occupies
-Mexico “declared” war for its taken land (you can say the US started it by invading first)
-Poor mexican army + no mexican navy + centralist government + more americans + better american navy + mexican instability = mexican defeat
US just wanted an excuse to invade (it even tried to invade Canada), so yeah americans are not the “good ones” in every war theyre involved.
just some mexican guy I live in Texas and you've educated me about the situation in Mexico at the time, the way it's taught here is that the US claimed land to the Rio Grande, while Mexico claimed the border was at the Nueces, so when an American army regiment sent to guard the border ran into some Mexicans, who promptly fired on them starting the war. My only personal problems about Mexico is the whole Battle of the Alamo situation. Anyways, thanks.
Adam Defibaugh Ok cheeto man lover
Tsaio Tv You know, there’s just to little information on what exactly detonated the war so battles at the borders might be the answer, it just neither country claimed to shoot the first bullet.

Expecting a bunch of “America mean” comments
love how people still live in the delusion that opposition would not do the same or worse.
Usually worse.
Well America did deliberately antagonize Mexicans along the Rio Grande so they would have a pretext to seize land. At this point they chose to invade another country, displace large amounts of its population and kill a ton of civilians. That does seem to cast the US in a negative light. The Mexican-American war does not make the US look good so it is understandable why they might face some criticism.

Crazy how big Mexico was then compared to now.
And how empty that northern land was. Santa Fe was the only city in the land ceded to the US which had over a thousand people when the war began. San Diego and San Francisco were both still in the hundreds.
From Wyoming to Costa Rica. Thats how big Mexico was. Even the countries from Central America knew Mexico was full of sh*t and decided to cede from it and say bye to Mexico. Tiny El Salvador was the 'epicenter' of revolting and leaving Mexico while the rest of the central american countries were nervously trying to revolt as well.

If they had Trotsky, they would’ve won
Gives Mexico the ability to do guerilla warfare and make America as divided as we are currently and Mexico would have won
Get well soon!
@@lesscringeymapperdude Hell no, they still would’ve been unstable, very untrained, and corrupt. They still would’ve lost and in fact it probably would’ve made Mexico lose even more land for the more amount of casualties probably coming from the Guerrilla warfare. Screwing mexico even more.

The Mexican army at that time was ... Pretty amateur, disorganized ... Bad. A bunch of armed peasants

1:22 How come it wasn't Santa Fe to be the insurgencies, but the random farmland to the North of it?
Insurgencies do best in rural areas.
This explains why DJ Khaled wrote the song "all I do is win, win, win, no matter what" in English, and not in Spanish.
As a Mexican Nationalist, I am sobbing. As a person who likes videos like these, I say great vid.
I was born in Mexico and I'm glad it happened lol. Wish they took even more land!
@Robert McCauley nah. They would've been unstable as hell and we would have gotten independence back in mere months because the entire population would be in an uproar
@@antoniolopezdesantaanna6572 Mi alteza serenísima, why did you put your men to sleep in San Jacinto? You already had Houston cornered to hang him from an Ahuehuete for promoting slavery in your Republic

@European Awakening if you've ever been to Mexico City's Zocalo Plaza during September 16 (our independence day) you'd see why pretty fast. Every Mexican I've met when I go visit CDMX and the region in general is a die hard nationalist like me.
I'm typing this comment as myself and not Santa Anna btw.
To this day I don’t understand why the bear flaggers stoped at San Diego and didn’t keep marching through Baja California.
Dunno, maybe because if they invaded that area their supply line would be extremely exposed? Can’t think of another reason, I’ll look it up later.
Have you been there? There are no rivers at all past the Colorado. Also, the port of San Diego was the main objective and the Mexicans managed to negotiate for keeping the port of Ensenada to salvage their own economy.
Arturo Cevallos Soto I get why at that time Baja would seem not have any value
kiranpranathi really I it would be extremely easy to take Baja since you can easily cut if off from the rest of mexico

Kind of suprising the US didn't just absorb all of Mexico considering they were high on manifest destiny at the time. Definitely would make for some interesting alternate history
They did not do it because for them our race was inferior , they are absorbing mexicanos today anyway LOL
theres a video explaining why they didn’t go watch it
They did not carry out the "All Mexico" for simple racism
It was partly thanks to Nicolas Trist's goodwill that Mexico wasn't butchered further and partly racism (the cession was relatively small in terms of indigenous people compared to the rest of Mexico. the US didnt want so many natives in their borders).
@@Greatcountry37 What the USA wanted was Mexico without Mexicans, they despised the idea that non-white Catholic Spaniards would be naturalized Americans
