There were two Pentax 6X7, a Pentax 67 MLU and then a Pentax 67 ii, the latter of which changed from the mechanical shutter to an electronically controlled shutter. There are also many different viewfinders, some of which include a light metering system. You seem to have the wooden handle with the cold shoe. There is a version with a hot shoe but you need the linking flash cable which plugs into the LH side of the camera and the side of the handle.
smaller alternatives 6x7: Mamiya 7, Plaubel Makina 67 6x6: Mamiya 6, a small TLR like Rolliflex or Yashica mat 124g 645: Mamiya M645, Pentax 645N, Fuji GA645, Bronica RF645
I personally really love the Mamiya C220. Being square format and twin reflex style camera makes it RADICALLY different than what I typically am using (ie a Fujifilm X-T3). Small and light, quality photos, and can shoot discreetly at waist level too. I can see why people like Vivian Maier loved using that style of camera on the street. Takes some getting used to but fun.
I just sold my wooden grip for £100 and probably could have got a little more as it sold so quick! The right hand 3D printed grips are about £11 but be careful you don’t trigger the MLU as it puts your finger close to it. If you’ve sold it already though...
..i started 1981 with photography, i learned to make the film shot kind a perfect as it goes, because of having a roll with 36 pics or 10.....now photographers taking 500 pics digital without thinking of perfection but hoping one of 500 is good.....accidental. btw 645 cameras are not that heavy...mamiya 645 or zenza bronica etr.... do you sell the pentax? I am looking for one...... greets bm
I've been waiting for this. I think just because of the high cost of filming, you should use a 6x7 camera for direct projects. To shoot a roll of 120 film every day for everyday street photography would be a bit too much. 😅
Did you sell it? I think I saw a Pentax 67 on Ebay not too long ago with pictures similar to the one on your video's thumbnail (that greenish background). It had the same lens and the stupid wooden handle. Was it yours?
It's a pretty unwieldy camera, I don't blame you! As far as more compact, check out TLRs (Yashica Mat LM/EM or 124, the square format is something to adjust to but two more shots per roll, WAY smaller and lighter), 645 SLRs (Bronica ETR series, Mamiya 645 system), and probably my favourite, the Fuji GS645S. I would say 645 cameras might fit you better. 16 shots per roll, usually smaller and lighter. The Fuji GS645S is hardly bigger than a modern DSLR, if at all. Quick to operate, fantastic lens, easy to carry, rangefinder and relatively cheap. That's my two cents after having used a few cameras from each of those systems!
I just bought a Fuji GS645S which is a lightweight 6X4.5 rangefinder with a gorgeous 35mm equivalent lens. I usually shoot with an M6 and within one photo walk i felt totally used to it. Cant reccoment it enough.
Love your work brother! Check out the Bronica RF645. Smaller negative but 16 frames per roll and a fantastic bright rangefinder viewfinder + 65mm lens is beautiful. Cheers
@@frame-lines if it's mostly down to the ergonomics, consider buying this grip instagram.com/snapu/ I had the same concerns as you, and this grip solved it
Great video! I’ve heard some mixed things about the 6x7 and most of it does come from how it handles like you said; I really love the size of my Mamiya 645, additionally you get 15 shots per roll which just makes it that much more forgiving, even if the negatives are a bit smaller, they’re still ~3x the size of 35mm film.
Hi Josh. Interesting episode. The Pentax is a great camera for sure but perhaps not so suited to street photography as it is to other genres. I'm biased because I own one but the 'Texas Leica', the Fuji GW690 is maybe something you'd enjoy instead. A favourite of Japanese tour bus operators, they have a reputation for robustness (I read that up to 50 rolls a day were put through them). Take it easy.
Definitely, if you do street photography with this "monster" is quite impossible to not get noticed :-) To think about the costs of the films and for the developing, maybe keeps motivated to take care more about each shot, when you think that each frame is expensive.
It'd be way too big for me too. I went with the Mamyia 6. Love the rangefinder system and it was a cheaper alternative to the Mamiya 7. Also I dig square format.
would you ever try shooting at night with a tripod? Digital format is so quick and gratifying, maybe try slowing way down; maybe find an experience to have instead of having an experience through the camera. I also see your digital photography is rich in color, do you think that the character of film and your digital style need any fine tuning? lastly, just an idea...you should pass the camera to Shane and see what he does with it haha. Still waiting for your book to arrive in Seattle!
😂 oh Josh you make me laugh! You seem like your trying to shoehorn your way into film when it does fit. Maybe shoot digi and be proud! I’m surprised that you haven’t looked at a digi medium formate.. I’ve had my eye on the new Hasselblad digi back that you can fit to a 500cm. But at the end of the day is it needed? 🤷🏼♂️ On another note - I’m liking the upshift in production value to your video! Nice work mate!
Handle has never made any sense to me. Grip added to right side makes more sense. Love the results of the Pentax 67 though. Look into the 55mm lens or the 105mm lens. The meter is pretty much pointless...handheld meter or sunny 16 is the way to go.

Great video, the Mamiya 7 will be your best option in my opinion
Good shout ! Thanks !
Totally agree on the pricing front, but the thunderclap sound of the 6x7 shutter, whilst taking street is a challenge.
haha the shutter is quite satisfying though..

Loved the photos! They looked great! 💖
Ah thanks !
the MAMAMIYA7is going to suit you the best i think
get a right side grip. makes it so much more manageable. mine is a printed one off ebay.

No! The wooden handle is cooler! 😎

aha yeah definitely way too much for street, fun to mix it up from time to time though eh, cheers Dan.
Plaubel Makina 67: it is the same format, it's a rangefinder, the meter is accurate and easy to use, did I mention it is also really compact?
Ah nice one, yeah love the look of the folding design !
Did you sell it? I think I saw a Pentax 67 on Ebay not too long ago with pictures similar to the one on your video's thumbnail (that greenish background). It had the same lens and the stupid wooden handle. Was it yours?
Just had another look and yeah, I can tell it's yours. Good price though, jump on it fellas!

The zine arrived last week Josh, and love the shots. Well done :)

Great video
I think you should try a TLR like a Yashica Mat124 it’s light weight you get more shots and it’s relatively cheap. It is a square format 6x6
ah yeah maybe, I am not hugely into 6x6 though..!
Can you share how did u blend your photos, i love them so much.
Nice, just got mine too. I bought the pentax 67II focusing screen and have that professionally fitted and aligned (for focus).
Nice one

You should get a GS645S, I absolutely love mine. Great rangefinder and lightmeter, I've used it on the street several times and its great.
A quite modern, fully automated and relatively light mf alternative is the Fuji GA645Zi. It's like a mf point and shoot camera.
ah yeah always wanted to try one..!
Have you tried a “Texas Leica?”
Plaubel Makina wide version is equivalent to 28mm on 35mm film, very compact, very straightforward to use.
They do look super fun those !

I think a Mamiya 6 or 7 is many something for you, its a rangefinder and medium format!
You should try a Fuji gs645 it’s small light weight you get 15 shots on a roll, and you could probably get 4 of them for the he price of a Pentax 67
They look like good fun those eh! Cheers
Ha! Ya coping out :) ask and see what happens. Love the video keep up the good work.
Ha yep ! Cheers Karl 🙂
I've just picked up a fuji gs645s, love it.Feels just like a slightly large slr and portable too!!! P.s where did you get your zine printed?
