when i press Ctrl + it zooms me in
If you are using a laptop you need to enable emulate 9 figure pad in blender settings in preferences I bellive

Has it a nine figure pad on the keyboard. If not the same applies/you are in edit mode when growing the selection I guess Tab get you in and out of edit mode,
