Some kids started a fire in oregon and closed down a good trail called tunnel falls for many years out in the Columbia gorge. I believe it re opened in the last few years
Ahhh Chimney Tops. That ascent is BRUTAL! If you’re feeling like a rule breaker, you can go around that gate for about another couple hundred yards. Stops just short of the base of the tops. Rumor also has it those kids had relatives that were either high ranking LEOs or judges, something like that. Get feeling well Babs! Matt you and the rest of family take care as well. Thinking of you all. Sending love from IN. 🧡
The original trail is not the current one. I being old now did it with a few friend in the early 70's. Was toad about it by my father You follow the current trail all the way to the left turn that starts the climb. The original trail stayed straight there and slowly climbed to the left. It eventually reached to the back spine where we had to climb rhododendron stalks to get to the spine. After that not hard to the top. Fun fact, there are actual holes thru the top that give it the Chimney label
You two did very good it is one of the most difficult hikes in the smomies

What a bummer about it burning down up there.😔
