Liverpool’s pre-season is over after Arne Slot’s Anfield debut on Sunday, with the start of the Premier League season now less than a week away. But there’s only one thing on everyone’s minds and that’s transfers!
Reds legend Jamie Carragher joins the ECHO’s Liverpool FC correspondent Paul Gorst and host, Theo Squires, to debate Liverpool’s summer so far, including the latest on transfer target Martin Zubamendi and which player the 2005 Champions League winner wants his former side to sign most.
Also discussing the latest speculation regarding the futures of youngsters Ben Doak and Bobby Clark, Jamie, Paul and Theo also reflect on the Reds’ pre-season campaign under Slot and the contrasting fortunes of Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez against Sevilla and Las Palmas.
And Jamie also has his say on the futures of Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah ahead of their contracts expiring next summer, following an update from the Dutchman on his situation on Sunday.

Slot had a 6ft 2, physical DM in Mats Wieffer who is more then a destroyed type, is box to box, a great dribbler/ball carries, good passer who covers so much ground with his long legs, dominates in duels, tackles and interception.

There was no chance Zubimendi was Slot preference, he likely has little say in transfers judging by the lack of dealings & the targets.
No way Zubimendi was gonna join Liverpool too given his personality with him being shy, comfortable at home.
He is easy to talk out of moves, as was done in previous windows with Barca, Arsenal and Bayern.
Arteta is from his hometown of San Sebastian, played for Real Sociedad, like Zubimendia a boyhood Sociedad fan and yet that was not enough to convince him to play for him despite talks.

Zubimendi likes stability, thats big part of why he is so comfortable staying in his boyhood, hometown team.

Zubimendi rejected. Alternatives: Joao Gomes (Wolves), Edson Alvarez (West Ham), Alan Varela (Porto). Also, center backs need. 1 right-footed (Guehi, Geertruida) and 1 left-footed (Hincapie, Inacio). Maybe, thinking of center forward to push Darwin to score more
Sounds like you put in more work than our transfer department! They hate spending, so unless they know it will work they will find “internal solutions.”
We will always have other targets as opposed to just one (Zubimendi) but considering we have a new look recruitment department who all know each other and bring a wealth of experience - this looks massively embarrassing.
The deal itself sounded complex to do and I think the longer it took to try and resolve and Hughes to try and reduce the fee, it dragged on and Zubi changed his mind and gave in to the charm offensive by Sociedad.
Very poor by the recruitment team but at the end of the day, you don’t turn Liverpool down or ask for so many days to make a decision.
Had he have been 21 you could understand it but at 25 it’s a strange one. Considering also that alonso is his idol and his agent knows Hughes - it’s very embarrassing.

If Slot was told of his appointment in April, when did Slot Identify Zumbimen of Real Sociead , as it was reported Zumbimen was Slot number 1 target, yet no one had mentioned him till after he came on as sub on July 9th in Euro final. Its a month since that final , and we are expected to belive that Martín Zubimend was Slot number 1 target since he was appointment.Slot is a joke, he never saw Zumbimen till July 9 at 9pm that night
Slot doesn’t make the signings that’s what Richard Hughes was brought in for along with assistant David Woodfine and overseen by Michael Edwards.
Slot’s doesn’t have the power that Klopp had and knew this before signing with Liverpool

The release clause is owned by the player, ;LFC pay Zumbi the release fee and Zumbi then pays Real Soci , LFC do not pay Real Scocie the release fee, its the players release fee to buy himself out of the contract he signed .. The player had the release fee inserted in his contract so Real could not insist on a fee that is unreasonable

Virg said we need signings and Trent is looking at FSG ambition/spending and seeing if they'll match his ambition. It'll be tough to turn down Real if there's no improvement on a squad that limped in 3rd and made last 8 of Europa....I'm not confident but FSG aren't even in top 10 of PL for spending.

Fabio Carvalho has completed his move from Liverpool to fellow Premier League side Brentford signing a five-year deal with the Bees. The contract also includes the option for a one-year extension.
The two clubs agreed a fee rising to £27.5m when featuring in potential add-ons which can easily be met. The Reds have also included a 17.5 percent sell-on clause for the winger, who cost them just £5m when he joined from Fulham in 2022.
For their part, Fulham inserted their own 20 percent sell-on clause, from the profits of Carvalho’s move, during that previous sale so look set to make more than £4m from the deal.
