For me personally, appearing on television and hearing my own words is something I find extremely uncomfortable. This stems from the need to perform in an artificially constructed space, leading to behavior and expressions that can diverge from my usual thoughts and feelings. This sense of discomfort has left a deep impression on me over time.
In this context, a television program proposed the concept of 'performing freely'. Within this framework, I made the choice to sleep during a nationwide broadcast. However, merely sleeping would not constitute an interesting program, so I attempted to create an expressive presentation of light and sound using biometric data collected during sleep.
The various biometric signals produced by my body during sleep, such as heart rate, body temperature, respiration, teeth grinding, eye movement tracking, and the activity and contraction of certain muscles, were captured and converted into light and sound. All parameters used in this project were controlled by a synthesizer we developed independently, each assigned to correspond to various physical responses. As a result, viewers were able to experience the subtle changes produced by my body through sight and sound.
私自身がテレビに出演し、自身の発言を視聴するのは、非常に抵抗感があります。これは、作り上げられた空間で作り上げられた表現を演じることが必要とされるためで、その結果として、日常的な自分の思考とは異なる行動や発言を示すことがあります。この違和感は深い印象として長い間残っていました。
そこで、あるテレビ番組で提案されたのが、「自由にパフォーマンスを行う」というコンセプトでした。私はその中で、全国放送のテレビ番組内で睡眠を取るという選択をしました。ただし、単に睡眠を取るだけでは番組として成立しないため、睡眠時の生体データを用いて音と光の表現を作る試みを行いました。
私が睡眠中に体が発するさまざまな生体信号、すなわち心拍数、体温、呼吸、歯ぎしり、眼球の動きのトラッキング、さらには特定の筋肉の活動や収縮などを捉え、これを光や音に変換するというアイデアを実行しました。このプロジェクトで使用した全てのパラメーターは、独自に開発したシンセサイザーにより制御され、各々が様々な体の反応に対応するようにアサインされました。この結果として、視覚と聴覚を通じて私の身体が生み出す微細な変化を視聴者たちが体感することができるようになりました。
