Hello! I have been made aware of something I missed out in this video. Axolotls in fact have both gills and lungs! Good luck guys and thanks for watching! 👍 Don't forget to Subscribe!
finally! so many people put them into bare bottom tanks with plastic plants and fake driftwood because "it's easy to clean" so what! you're supposed to provide the best possible life for them. which is what this dude is doing, thank you
Thank you for the very kind words! It means a lot! I'm a big believer in naturalistic setups and always try to include plants as they look great but also help water quality. Im personally not a fan of bare bottom tanks either! Thanks for watching! 👍
Respect my guy, you are so educational and unlike all the other videos I've seen, you have covered all the things I needed to know 😁 you should be a top search, yet I had to do some serious searches and bullshit videos to find you. I really appreciate your advice, you should find a producer or editer, or even try yourself to get ahead of the competition 😉. All the best anyway, thanks 😊
Are there small Adult species of this animal ie 6inches.?Do i have to go through a Nitrogen Cycle like Marine Tanks?I am planning on a 20-30 gallon tank and would like an Adult Pair -perhaps with a view to Breeding;Good Presentation
I would try my best to keep it below 18 degree celcius, which is pretty easy here in the UK 😂. 🤔 I've never had issues with growing pothos in cold or tropical temperatures. Maybe start with a cutting and allowing it to root in the water, that what I did with this setup. Hope that helps! Good luck 👍
Hi man, don’t see this comment as hate, just trying to help! They do get air, which isn’t strange, they have lungs and they also have gills so they sometimes choose to get air at the surface, Not weird at all! The lights are also kind of unnatural to the axo’s. They live in murky lakes in Mexico, so they don’t like lights at all! Try to put a PVC-pipe in there, you would see that the axolotl spent more time in the pipe then in the light! :) Axolotls don’t see. They are practically blind! They use their sense of movement to eat. You can see this when you put your hand in the tank, the axolotl would start to react to the movements in the water. A good food could be earthworms. Don’t feed them something else like crickets ( way to hard of a shell ). In one year, your axolotl should be pretty close to FULLY grown. ( if you feed them good foods ). Have owned them over 15 years know! Love the tank, once again, not hate, just trying to learn you something. I have been working and studying axolotls since I was 5, so I know a thing or two! :)
Hi thanks for the comment! Like I said I am not an expert. I have looked into it and you're correct they do have both lungs and gills which is amazing! Thanks! 😁 I understand what you're saying about lighting. Which is why I mentioned to beginners to use no lighting or dim lighting. In my case I am using dim lighting, this is to keep my live plants alive, the plants pull nitrate from the water, increase oxygen content in the water and benefit the water quality. Water quality to me is very important. As I'm using dim lighting I have provided a cave which I made using driftwood and rock and Toothless can use the dark areas of thick plants if needed (used to have floating plants to keep the whole tank dimmer but Toothless ate them 😂) . I also recommend to viewers to do their own research on this matter. But like I said in my video Toothless very rarely uses his dark cave and spend almost all his time out in the open under the light and I am yet to see him become stressed by this. If he seemed stressed I would make a change. I hope your axolotls are well! Thanks 👍👍👍
Alasdair Aquatics Hi man! I love the positive vibes you give with the video and the comment as well, which is nice! Your Axolotl looks healthy so you are doing it right! ;) thanks for the amazing video(S). I really like the channel! Can you tell me which plants you use brother? I like your scape, I might try the same! ;)
@@robbemertenss7912 Hi thanks for the positive response and liking the channel! It means a lot! I'm glad you think Toothless looks healthy! Here is a list of the plants I used in his/her enclosure. Most are grown emersed from Tropica: Limnophila sessiflora Cryptocoryne wendtii green Hygrophila siamensis 53b Java moss (taxaphillium barberi) Spiky moss I have also used frogbit and duckweed in the past but they end up as a snack 😂. Please excuse any spelling mistake of the plants 😂
Alasdair Aquatics Thanks for the list! Can’t wait for the next video on your little beast! If you don’t mind giving live fish, you should try putting a few guppies in there! The axolotls like to hunt for their food and a fresh little fish always tastes good to them! ;) make sure not to go bigger then Guppies/mollies, otherwise the axolotl gets picked on, just like you mentioned! :)
Hey I have been looking for someone that knows everything like you I’m researching about axos because I’m considering getting one I still have so much research to do but we’ll get there if you could answer my questions that would be great first do they need just a sponge filter or do they need a sponge filter and a normal filter and second do I give him/her just water with conditioner in it I really want to try to make everything right and only have mild mistakes if you would get back to me that would be great and if not that’s ok too thanks!!!
Can you put 3 axolotls in a 40 gallon because I've read and the Petco people told me that you start with a 20 gallon, then add 10 for each extra axolotl? I just want a second opinion, and I'm thinking of getting a 60 gallon because I've also read they each need 20 gallons. 🙏✨ thank you!
Hello! The plants in this tank are all relatively easy plants which don't need CO2. I have cryptocoryne, hydrophillia siamensis 53b, limnophila, microsorum and java moss. The vine coming out of the filter is pothos. All the plants were from Tropica and comes in packs. Hope that helps 👍 Thanks for watching, I appreciate it! 😁
Sounds exciting! Good luck with them! There is no hide exactly, I just place to rocks next to eachother, then placed some spiderwood on top and added lots of epiphytes and moss to create a natural cave. He loved it! Good luck with your setup 👍
Different sites say different things. Personally I think that is enough water volume for two as it is roughly double the size of my tank. The main thing to consider is the footprint of the tank, you'll want a tank with a large area for the axolotls to walk around as they spend most of their time walking. Something long and wide rather than really tall. Also keep an eye out for aggression between them. Bigger is always better though! Have a look at other tank on youtube for ideas 😁 Hope that helps! Good luck! 👍
Although this is over a year old, I just came across it. I have 4 axolotls. One girl in a 20g by herself and three boys in their own planted set up. I usually watch Frankie's Aquatics. How is Toothless? hope all is well.
Thanks for watching! Toothless is doing well, he was rehomed to a much larger aquarium with other axolotls to live out his days with others! I felt he would be happier in a much larger aquarium in the end 😁
Ey up! Great video. I was just wondering whether you know the footprint of that aquarium? I am trying to work out whether a 70 litre ( ~ 15 gallon ), with a 50 L x 40 W footprint might be adequate for a single juvenile axi.
Some sites recommend 10 gallon per juvenile but i think 15/20 gallons is better. Just bare in mind they can grow up to a foot long when adult 😁. Sounds like you will need to upgrade in the future, they do grow pretty fast. Good luck with your axolotl endeavours! Thanks for watching! 👍
The footprint of this tank was 60x36cm roughly 20 gallons. I think this really is the minimum size. I ended up rehoming toothless to a hobbyist who had a 200litre so hopefully hes happy there 😁. Hope that helps!

Hi i know this video is a year old! But how to keep your plants green and from not melting? i've read fertilizers are poisonus to axolotls because of the iron?
Not sure about the toxicity of iron to axolotls, either way it's a trace element in our tap water for most countries. I ended up rarely adding fertilizer to this tank as toothless created a fair amount of waste(nitrogen) and then my water changes replaced the trace elements which the plants were using up. Also these were very easy and hardy plants so I didn't worry too much about their care as they thrive in almost any aquarium from my experience. The plants I used were anubias, microsorum, limnophila, cryptocoryne wendtii and moss. Bare in mind lots of plants melt when first added to an aquarium as they are adjusting to new water parameters, so if it's early on and you see melting I wouldn't be too alarmed, the same goes for plants grown emersed. Good luck and thanks for watching!
They definitely need a filter with cycled filter media, although they dont like strong flow. Sand or bare bottom are best because they can choke on gravel. They are a cold water species. Ensure ammonia and nitrite are always kept at 0. I would not let nitrates go above 20. My maintenance was a 50% water change weekly. My pH sat around 7.4. Hope that helps! They are great animals! 👍

NO! Axolotls are a sepret creater from a salamanders. When a salamander is young it looks exactly like a axolotl. Axolotls NEVER morph there for makeing it a SEPARATE specices.
Salamanders aren’t just a single species, they are many many different species (axolotl’s included). Axolotl’s have evolved to remain in their larvae stage and don’t metamorphose into adult salamanders unless of stress. Ive read iodine can sometimes make them transition but at the cost of a much shorter lifespan.

I just got the golden albino glow axolotl
My house, therefore my aquarium too is always 21 degrees unless I cool it down.
A 20 long is great. As you said, length over height.
Yeah with lights, 1 out of 3 of my axolotls is fine with light. The other 2 are REALLY light sensitive, so I don’t know.
Add more hiding spots
what are the plants axolotls use?
or basically need
He occasionally climbs over the plants 😂. Technically you don't need plants, I like to use them as they are great for water quality as they remove nitrates. The plants I've used are java moss, hydrophillia siamensis 53b, limnophila and cryptocoryne. I also have pothos in the filter to pull more nitrates 😁. Hope that helps!
ofc his name is Toothless just look at him!
We need an update video😎
Lmao mine is also toothless, does everyone call their melanoids toothless? 😂
Just saying the tank looks a little small for the Axolotl because to keep them happy you need a 20 long
THE TANK IS WAY TOO SMALL. A 3 ft long tank is suitable
Tank too small
NO! Axolotls are a sepret creater from a salamanders. When a salamander is young it looks exactly like a axolotl. Axolotls NEVER morph there for makeing it a SEPARATE specices.
Otherwidse your video was helpful
Salamanders aren’t just a single species, they are many many different species (axolotl’s included). Axolotl’s have evolved to remain in their larvae stage and don’t metamorphose into adult salamanders unless of stress. Ive read iodine can sometimes make them transition but at the cost of a much shorter lifespan.
Axolotls will transform into a terrestrial salamander if injected with thyroid hormones
Please turn off the light!!!! That is too much light for the axolotl!!!! Even though it has a small hide it isnt enough!!!! Axolotls dont have eyelids so please turn the light off!!!! I cant even look at the tank because it is too bright, how do you expect that a axolotl can? Turn off the Light!!!!
Sorry. But axolotls definitely 10000000% breath air. They call it booping. They swim to the surface and..... boop air
What is the grassy plant on the rocks called??
Java moss 👍
