Took me like five minutes to realize what was going on... worst part is if I tell you how long it took me to realize I could move the cam with my finger on screen, instead of moving the tablet all around like an fool
I did pretty good for the first 10 minutes, but then I realized I was concentrating on that instead of listening to HP.. I guess this is one of the tough things about being a new guitar player. So many choices. My first guitar was a Squire Strat because of Clapton/Gilmour/Hendrix and I like it. My second guitar was a Squire Jazzmaster. Another Squire, but I got it because I liked the tone. I have now ordered my first Harley Benton and I will see how I like it. I wish I were a Lottery winner so I could try everything, but no such luck, so I have to trust the sounds and opinions from people like Henning, Darrel Braun, Andertons, etc.
Not a fan of the 360 thing but my god Henning, you nailed the living hell out of this rant. it was VERY nice to hear you saying what so many people dont have the balls to say! Cheers from Canada!
I like your honest videos Henning. You rant on your subscribers on a well meant way if they talk shit, you give honest reviews of gear and you dont cut your videos, even if your jokes are bad. Keep on doing your stuff that way.
Ok so story time, from me. 5 Years ago when i was around 15 I saved up all my money went to Thomann and bought Gibson Les Paul Studio 50's Tribiute. I know, long ass name. But i got it specifically because of that, because it said Gibson on the headstock and i belived that it would be a great step up from my cherry red Epiphone LP Studio. What i got is a guitar that sounds good, i can't deny that, i like the way it sound but the build quality was actually a step down from Epi, i had legit problem where knobs would fall off..... And i spent last 5 years in denial, saying to everyone that no, it's great, it has to be , it says Gibson on it. What eventually happened is that I'm not excited to play that guitar anymore, I'm not excited to pick it up and plug it in. Fortunately I didn't spent 1600euro on it but "only "700 but it's still a lot of money for a kid. We all love brands and we get waaaaay to attached to them so after sevral years I decided that it time for change and I'm saving every penny and later this year im jumping either to PRS 509 or maybe a nice Framus or actually anything that will feel good enough for me to want to buy it. Don't be like me, don't trust any brand. Go out, try it out and make informed decision
Yea, I think sometimes people forget just how much gear passes through your hands every year. That you kinda have way more experience with gear getting to test so many products. More than most people ever will. That’s kinda the point of watching is to get your opinion, and take on things. I mean some people won’t listen no matter what you say, they just want to be argumentative. It’s that or infatuation with the big brands that they grew up always wanting. If they don’t take into account what you have to say, then what’s the point of watching if they’re not listening to your perspective. For me I’ve learned to shove brand aside long ago, and play what feels, and sounds the best for me. After wasting a lot of time and money on gear I didn’t need when younger. Your opinion on things, as well as other youtube channels defiantly is really valid to me. Thank you for the hard work, and time you put into the reviews. Stay safe during all this pandemic going on now.
Completely agree. My main electric that I usually pickup is a Harley Benton TE52 (see the vid on my page). It’s not the best guitar I own, but it’s the one I connect with the most
If somebody makes something that 1. I like the sound of 2. can afford 3. is readily available 4. Is a quality product for the most part I'm gonna buy it.
Good rant. My collection consists of a Squire, an Epiphone, a few guitars I frankensteined together myself, and a hollowbody Kay I literally pulled out of the trash. I don't give a shit about names on headstocks...in fact I usually paint over them. I exclusively play solid state amps. I am vehemently opposed to all barriers to creativity, including gear snobbery,
Great video. I'm a product designer of 14 yrs and this is a reality with everything people buy. This needs to be called out and discussed. You are doing consumers a great service. Thank you.
And on another note, I was just thinking.... What if there was a fire in that studio?! I don't see a fire extinguisher anywhere. And that would be a WONDERFUL thing to have if something ever went to shit and started a wrecking all your gear
@@donstephens9473 Those sprinklers might save the house, but 42 Studios would have to start from scratch if they ever activated. A CO2 or powder can extinguisher within a few steps of the desk could limit the damage to maybe a 3-4 foot radius, so a fire would cost 4 figures worth of that gear instead of 5 or 6.
I remember that acouple of years ago, a friend had just bought a Gibson flying V, i had a ESP LTD Alexi 600 model. My LTD felt amazing, and when i played his Gibson i was dissapointed, his guitar costs double that mine, and mine played so much better, feel, sound, playability. My LTD was hands down the winner.
tokai. or heritage if you want more of the american thingy. the epiphone ones are alright too. try a few find the one that feels and sounds best without amping. then replace the pickups and hardware.....
Harley Benton makes an HB35 Vintage AND A HB35PLUS in various finishes and are now available to be shipped outside the EU .... I'M getting one soon ... at least go to the Thomann website and check it out .
The “yes, I’m gonna buy it, but please...” is why the brands don’t change anything. You should say “I’m not going to buy it, unless...” That’s capitalism, that changes brands’ minds.
Fantastic Video! Thank you! I bought an Epiphone John Lennon ES a few years ago when they 1st came out. Bought a matt black sticker and put it over the top of the headstock. Had the local decal shop print a few Gibson logos and stuck it on the headstock. Everybody marvelled over the new "Gibson" without paying attention to the headstock shape. They all LOVED how it played and said that's how a guitar should sound...like this Gibson! They were sssooo pissed when I revealed what it really was. They are still really upset at me when I bring it up. They got dupped! You are so right on about brands. Chuck M
To sum things up: everyone is biased, one way or the other. Some people have the intellectual capacity to reflect on that, other don't. It seem the latter tend to be very vocal in the RUclips comment section...
I totally agree with you, i got a Epiphone special II as one of my cheapest electric guitars and it sounds good. I havent played a gibson yet but compared to my more expensive ibanez, jackson, fender. Its not bad at all. Everyone one expect biggest brand names to be good and they are afraid to try other brands, For example: A Blackstar HT can sound relatively close to a Marshall, and it cost alot less but everyone expect it to be worse because marshall is a big name. 12:19 i dident see anything weird outside lol. Anyways, i got a Joyo zombie. If i plug a Boss Sd-1 on the overdrive channel on the joyo it sounds extremly close to my 6505MH and it costs alot more than the joyo. my point is people are afraid to test no name brands and/or brands people haven't tried. i got 3 harley benton guitars and 2 harley benton cabinets and compared to my more expensive stuff theyre amazing. i got one of the Fusion guitars and compared to one of my ibanez that is close to harley benton, The harley benton is Extremly good for the price. 370 euro that comes with a floyd rose 1000 with stainless steel frets, its exquisite. Im not saying marshall is crap or Gibson is crap. Its just too expensive for whats it is. i wont pay for history. i pay for quality.
This was a brilliant video. I was brand brainwashed on basses. I really wanna try out Harley Benton basses (lefty) I just wonder if they're gig worthy? I have seen ALOT of positive reviews on them. Henny can ya help me out on that? Thank you!!! Only brand I love the most is Ampeg bass amps.
@Trevor Hickey I recently purchased an HB JB40-FL and was floored by the quality! Easily matches or beats MIM Fenders. I got it for giggles because I wanted a fretless for noodling around the house. After actually playing it and seeing how good it is I would totally gig with it!
It's a common principle in advertising and marketing. "You don't buy the steak, you buy the sizzle." Which really only means that we don't buy a Product, we buy CONFIDENCE in that product. You buy a real Tube Screamer, because it's proven. In thousands of classic tracks, by people who supposedly would know better, and have expertise. You buy a Fender Strat instead of a copy because the Fender has been legitimized by our icons through sixty years of music history. Doesn't mean that the Tube Screamer or the Strat actually 'sound better' than anything else. They just sound like what we have established in our 'aural vocabulary' over decades. As well, in buying established brands, you're buying surety that you can't be ridiculed. You're buying security that if something is wrong with the result, it's Your fault, and not the fault of the gear. Removing variables is a valuable means of efficiently reaching an objective. We also trust big manufacturers because there's an assumption that they have the resources and expertise to create better products. More R&D.... Hiring top-level engineers and fabricators.... Better equipment.... Not always true, but since we can't know more/better, it does make Some sense to trust that concept.
And talking about brands "reinventing" themself: did you come across that new Ibanez Tubescreamer with a Tube in it? I don't get it. Would be cool if you could check them out.
Not a 360 video fan. But, I agree with the point of the topic. Perfect example is Chinese amp brand Wangs. I have 3 of them. A 5 watt micro head; 30 watt Fender based head; and a hand wired 50 watt Marshall JMP 2204 clone. Most people dismiss them without even ever seeing one in the flesh, much less playing one. They’re fantastic. The PCB based amps are just as good as the US or European produced amps built on PCB (most Fender and Marshall these days) and the hand wired amps seem every bit as good as the hand wired Marshall’s. The brand doesn’t have the lengthy history attached, so longevity of the Wangs amps remains to be seen, but everyone I know who has taken the plunge and bought one loves them. Admittedly, the name holds them back because the West is conditioned to think Chinese = low quality... in much of the English speaking world Wang also happens to be a slang term for Penis, so you get a lot of insecure people who don’t care how good they are, they won’t be caught dead with one because god forbid they are caught playing with their Wang. Lol
I got 20$ chinese "Caliber" brand strat from pawn shop few years ago. Last year I got PRS Custom 24 SE. It's great guitar, but I can't get rid of feeling, that this strat is actually on the same level (playability and sound). It just doesn't feel right, because of brand and price tag. Yes, majority of us is listening with eyes.
We're talking about a brand Gibson that has a severe problem with their headstock breaking off and they don't fix it because their customers freaked out when they headstock didn't look exactly the same so they go back to the one that breaks easily
Well, thanks to you, Henning, I want a Framus Panthera II in the worst possible way. Please keep showing us alternatives to the big guys; there are a lot of guitar/amp/pedal makers out there who need exposure and who make great stuff. There are too many RUclipsrs duplicating each other every time a new product comes out -- dare to be different!
One of the most interesting and important point is what feeling an instrument gives you. That's why I just play waaayyy better and with more love and feeling and whatever when I am sitting on a real piano or even a grand piano when I have the chance, than what I do on a digital one or a keyboard. Even if it's theoretically the same keys I push it just doesn't feel right and that effects immensely what I play and even more how I play it. But that is not bound to a brand. I have a Euterpe piano which isn't too expensive and isn't a brand like Bechstein or Schimmel. But I love it, I really really do love it. And that is giving me chills and makes me smile while I'm playing and this just feels right. I want to buy a Harley Benton SC-550 for several months now. And I am waiting so long until I finally can have it, I am sure I will love it, too. Get the instruments you love and get to love your instruments, it will make you play better by making you feel better while playing it...
Absolutely agree, it is what you feel. I played a Gibson Les Paul Standard 50s and then a Maybach Lester 59. I preferred the Maybach by far in terms of craftsmanship, look, feel and slightly by sound. Also, with a Gibson, you have to be lucky not to run into one with QC issues (more than 50% of the ones I saw had these). Then I tried to imitate the sound of the Maybach with my Squier 50s Tele by turning down the tone a bit and it was very close. If you play electric guitars with the same signal chain every time you realize how similar they all are.
It’s funny how we guitarists love to argue about what product is better and meanwhile most of the audience will never care. The audience for modern music is too busy arguing about which non-creative modern pop star is more famous. Good video here.
No shitstorm, just some basic truths that we're all guilty of in one way or another. I'm a recovering Never Boss snob, yet I have three brilliant pieces on my pedalboard. Who knew...
Cool presentation. Your also the first RUclipsr I hear giving Maybach a shout. I just got a Maybach 60s Lester last month and I LOVE that thing! I've got the big bad brands in my guitar rack. PRS, Gibson, Fender. The Maybach stole my hearth instantly. The thing that makes it more impressive is that its reliced... I really dislike relicing, but I got it, I play it, I love it. It's so good it makes me forget I don't like reliced guitars!
Subbed your channel and catching up on your videos. Great stuff! I purchased a Harley Benton CST 24 partly based on your review. Now I’m going to follow up with ordering their bass for a little recording I do. Are you familiar with the Keisel brand (used to be Carvin)? I live in the states and get out west once in a while so I’m going to visit their store. Have you ever played one? If so, I’d value your opinion of them.
What Thomann is doing with HB is awesome, dedicated stuff to all guitar newcomers and/or core-musician with low budget is amazing. I remember entry guitars in late 80-early 90, that were terrible. From my point of view, HB has all cards in hand to become a larger guitar brand.
I think the whole brand bias thing is more of an older player's mindset. Players that are in their in 40's, 50's, or older. Because when these guys were growing up Fender, Gibson, and the like were the top dog, high quality brands. Now the market is so saturated with other brands that do just as good (and a lot of times better) of a job of creating these similar instruments, but are also progressing them forward with better design features for playability, versatility, and over-all function. A lot of old school guys are just ignorant too it because they don't care to stay up to date with music gear or they let nostalgia cloud their assessment of new brands they see.
This is so important. We should concentrate on what is good to play and what is crap and not think about who owns the bigger brand anything. For electric guitars, it is devices manipulating and amplifying an electric signal. No wizardry only Marshall, Fender or Gibson know how to control.
Great topic! IMO it ultimately boils down to _what factory_ made the guitar & neck, I am a big fan of 80's Fujigen Gakki guitars & necks, regardless of what name is on the headstock.
That's one of Rafa's Songs, right... you can't buy those anywhere... we just recorded them for fun! There is a video that we recorded for Stanford Guitars, I think it is from that one... it is here on my channel. Or write me an eMail and I can send it to you! happynewgear@henningpauly.com
Henning. Completely agree. All companies do good and do bad. Thats the first 360 video I have seen and its frickin awesome. Do more ! By the way, qualitatively is a word.
Wow. One of the best rant ive seen. It also very true what you say about brands. I did buy one HB guitar, also one bass you did a review on. For the price they are very good.
Lost a ton of nice gear when I was "on the wagon" including a '76 Gibson SG a 60's Slingerland kit, and an American G&L P bass. Playing multiple instruments on a now extremely tight budget being a father, I have been buying cheap and modding for awhile now. Just got a $200 Squier Affinity Jazzmaster. Put Grovers on it and I'm more than happy with it. I got no time for brand whorish tone snobbery. They are tools. Excellent rant man. I'm with you all the way.
360 videos wont get old for me!! I admit I rely too much on brands, I think it's a surety thing eg. If it's such a good brand it must be good but I agree with what you are saying in this video. Keep up the good work!
I have caught a lot of crap over the years for my cheap Squire Classic Vibes Telecaster isn’t budget pedals and Fender X2 Super Champ. Whatever dude! Usually it’s in a situation when I’m the only musician in the room getting paid. I agree with Henning here, play what feels and sounds good. These days I want to support the hopes and dreams of people I know, personally.
I was a walking Ibanez promo when I grew up because of their wizard necks and my very small hands, so no other guitar felt that good and I returned every non-Ibanez...until Cort came along and boom, loved the KX models and the KX507 is now my favourite guitar, with the KX508 being my close 2nd. Same factory, the only thing that matters: The factory that actually builds the guitars. Compared the numbers at the neck and had to laugh when I saw how Cort basically IS Ibanez. People, try things out before judging them. There are a lot of small but good brands out there
Me: Why is he filming his desk?
Henning: This is a 360 video...

It's great guitar, but I can't get rid of feeling, that this strat is actually on the same level (playability and sound). It just doesn't feel right, because of brand and price tag. Yes, majority of us is listening with eyes.
I love your walrus audio warhorn! fav OD ever!
What is/are the amps behind the tiny Orange battery amp? Embargoed Yamaha THRs for 2018? [crossies]
What was the green amp you `didn’t` point out?
Agreed. I'd love to see blind tests in the future just to prove people wrong.
Yes! Let Them Know.
I just noticed that the viewpoint of the video moves around when I move my iPad... très cool, but gets old fast...
What's that greenish guitar on top of the orange?!?!?!
I love the 360 Video!!! How did you do that?
No shitstorm, just some basic truths that we're all guilty of in one way or another. I'm a recovering Never Boss snob, yet I have three brilliant pieces on my pedalboard. Who knew...
Wow, you can move the cam around. I thought he was just invisible.
This controllable camera is outrageous another great job
I just watched it splayed... too lazy to download yt app
If so, I’d value your opinion of them.
they are good guitars... I don’t really like some of the policies they have when it comes to returns etc.
Thanks. I’ll look into the return policy.
What Thomann is doing with HB is awesome, dedicated stuff to all guitar newcomers and/or core-musician with low budget is amazing. I remember entry guitars in late 80-early 90, that were terrible. From my point of view, HB has all cards in hand to become a larger guitar brand.
Great rant - same can be said about most desired possessions and once acquired, only disappoint - sad
Cool 360 camera thing
But tone paint is still a real thing right?
How did you accumulate all that stuff I mean that’s a lot of stuff
love these kind of rants
looking straight up at the ceiling is fucking trippy
Really difficult to watch this while sitting on the toilet.
What is the amp that he touched but wouldn't say ?
Randy Gast Joyo I think.
Revv
Qualitatively is a word. A recent one, but still with enough usage to get it mentioned several thousand times within large English Corpuses.
I just watched this fine rant again, and I'm thinking that more animals at the end, or anywhere, in 360 would be cool :)
What's with the slurping?
I wonder which the first amp brand was - probably victory, considering their customer service and QC record.
360 doesnt agree with my laptop...
Desktop computer is the coolest way to watch these.
Thanks Henning.
You have a white Strat' with a hole in it. It's next to a grey-blueish one. Wood worms?
It looks misshapen too. Gotta check humidity in that room…
This is so important. We should concentrate on what is good to play and what is crap and not think about who owns the bigger brand anything. For electric guitars, it is devices manipulating and amplifying an electric signal. No wizardry only Marshall, Fender or Gibson know how to control.
"qualitative" is a real word and you did use it correctly
Great topic!
IMO it ultimately boils down to _what factory_ made the guitar & neck,
I am a big fan of 80's Fujigen Gakki guitars & necks, regardless of what name is on the headstock.
I count 40 guitars! How many amps?
I must say Im a brand snob! Im attached to Harley Benton :D
Hello Henning. Could you tell us where we can buy the song at the end? I searched on Apple Music but could’nt find it.
I like that this a 360 degree vid, I wish more people did this.
Gotta add - The Walrus 385 is the most interesting and unique drive I own, and I own a lot. They're not all the same.
You're fucking nuts, I love you. Brilliant video. Following you around wasn't great but I enjoyed being "in" your studio. Thanks Henning.
This 360 view is pretty cool.
Ferret cage or faraday cage?!
There are a lot of small but good brands out there
They have to be better, because usually they charge more.
Not always, of course... there's always exceptions to any rule.
Henning. You stomp about more than me while ranting. I completely agree with you.
