Mr. Aston. So many bands first time listen about them. Now I do have like 100 albums to listen to wating to stream. Incredible box sets so many around. Thanks for all that soul you share with your videos. Best wishes.
Monumental! I have never seen anyone immersed in music like you. Merry Christmas to you and your family, Phil. I have been enjoying your wonderful videos since the lockdown. Thank you so much.
Great video! (And I watched your best of the year one, too.) I didn't even know about that Rory Gallagher box. Huge fan. I have the box set that was done for Irish Tour '74 in 2014, which is a treasure. Thanks for an enjoyable viewing.
I too have purchased the box set of the first five Chrysalis Steeleye Span albums recently - brilliant. My latest purchase has been Tangerine Dream (The Virgin Years 1974 - 1978) - very nice indeed as I only got into them around 1981.
Thanks Phil, always love listening to your countdowns. My fav box set was the Rory Gallagher as you. My fav reissues were the Psychotic Waltz reissues, a long time out of print, so were a welcome reissue.
Well Phil - that is truly an amazing selection of box sets - I do love my box sets lolol. The Tull sets as you mentioned are the benchmark. I think Island do them all the same. I also have box sets by John Martyn, Camel, Moody Blues and Sandy Denny in the exact same format. Brilliant. I've seen Rory Gallagher a few times back in the day, late 60's early 70's, at the peak of his powers and he always put on a great show. Such a terrible loss 😞At least we still have his music. Cya Doug
Merry Christmas Phil! My favorite CD box set of the year is The Rascals Complete Atlantic Recordings, remastered, gatefolds for certain albums, bonus tracks and an excellent booklet also.
@@NowSpinningMagazine I bought that in the states, but I thought I got that one in 23, could be mistaken, but anyway good music and a good box set also
Yes Phil, spot on pal- what a fabulous boxset! As usual Phil- nothing but good vibes and positivity from your channel! Of course your knowledge and enthusiasm for music is infectious. Keep up the good work! I recently guested on a friend's channel (close to the edge) and my analysis of the albums I was reviewing was certainly influenced by your positive outlook Phil. Ok, all the best and take care. Kevin.
Hi Phil. I bought only two box sets this year but both were because of videos I watched on your channel, so thank you! The first was Hawkwind : Space Ritual and the second was Horslips : More Than You Can Chew. Both bands are very important to me and both sets are exceptional. I never got to see either band live, so having all this live material is really great. Happy Holidays!
Merry Christmas from America Phil. I hope you and your lovely wife have a nice holiday season, and a fantastic new year. I love your show. Keep up the great work.
Spot on with the choice of Rory Gallagher as number one. Bought it months ago on pre - release, from HMV for around £128, Will be opening and playing it tomorrow, xmas day 2024. Cannot wait. Thanks Phil - for being my favourite you tube channel.
Thanks Phil, much to discover here. I picked up the stand-alone vinyl editions of the Deep Purple and Thin Lizzy remixes. As for June Tabour & Oysterband: their version of 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' is head and shoulders above any other cover version I've heard. Merry Christmas to you and Sue!
SHOCKED!😮 ASTOUNDED!😮 DUMBFOUNDED!😮After all the Prog that made your Top 35 of '24 I was sure the magnificent Fish SuperDeluxe's would be high on your list of reissues but the big Scot was nowhere to be seen. Phil. What in Spocks beards going on??? Greetings from sunny N.Ireland ❤
Phil, I'm glad you did a separate episode for box sets and reissues because I've picked up much more of these over newer releases. My top five CD box set picks for 2024: 1.Black Sabbath - Anno Domini 2. Whitsnake - Into The Sun 3. Robin Trower - Bridge Of Sighs 4.. John Entwhistle - The Ox Box 5.. McCoy - The Sound Of Thunder Merry Christmas!
From Wisconsin Phil hope you and your wife have a wonderful holiday season.I'm loving this video I have almost all the boxsets you've shown love your take on them
Fanny released a "new" album this year. Live at the Beat Club 1972 on vinyl and cd. First and sometimes second album still available on coloured vinyl released sometime recently. Brilliant band. All Beat Club songs on you tube. Excellent.
A more "esoteric" list of your top 35 box sets of 2024 and much appreciated as always. I would respectfully add to your list the Talking Heads "77", Michael Schenker "Studio Albums", Frank Zappa's "apostrophe*", the "Yes album" and "Fragile", Bryan Ferry and Joni Mitchell box sets. And as an addendum to my list, Rory Gallagher "Live at the BBC" and Thin Lizzy's "1976" as I had originally only bought the exclusive to SCD Blu-ray. Two (2) absolutely essential releases in my book!
Agree Phil I don't have a turntable but its part of the story, maybe one day 😂. That's why I buy Yes reissues. Have other remastered cds but has to be done. I can't do one without the other. Got a bargain that tbh I had forgotten i had ordered. Marillion Script for A Jesters Tear lovely set. Brand new from Rarewaves £22.08 unbelievable. Have so much stuff pre order Bandcamp etc lol. Don't always get e mail saying despatched Great list Phil Been a good year. I know other channels say oh i won't get that, they forget if you know the music for 40 /50 years you need to replace not get rid of its a voyage of rediscover as they say. Take care Jonathan
I have Queen 1 it is amazing. I love the vinyl and cd package. The Queen 1 box set and Pink Floyd Animals 40th anniversary box set is the way to package physical media music.
Hi Phill, Very eclectic mix of albums/reissues. Highlights for me were the two Tull offers Bursting and the Christmas album plus the UFO double cd Obsession. Just a tip off, I've followed Pallas since the.mid 80's and have seen them numerous times. You need to get hold of Beat the Drum - plus The Cross & The Crucible. Two brilliant albums If you enjoyed the 80's stuff on the box set. Keep.on spinning Happy Christmas & New Year. Martin.
Great video. I agree with you about he June Tabor album and wouldn't it be great to get a Starz box set. Id love an XTC one as well although you can at least get hold of all their albums
Merry Christmas Phil Thanks for 2 great videos I was gutted that Rory sold out and searched everywhere for it and it was silly money So you can imagine my shock when I walked past a record shop last week and saw one in window for £130 which is around original price I was straight in and bought it .Still dipping into it and can see why it’s number 1
Wow what a treasure trove of reissues this year. There's a few in there that I would seek out such as the Thin Lizzy set and Coverdale solo. I wish I'd known about the Jethro Tull album series from the start as I could have seen myself buying them. Superbly presented. I have the Machine Head box which was really nice. Love your work mate. Have a great Christmas and New Year. Cheers 😊👍👍
Thankyou for all your hard work and dedication to music this year. Ps surprised neil young archive 3 was not considered for your end of year list although i thought it was a bit pricey.looking for to 2025 .happy new year when it comes
There weren’t any box sets that grabbed me this year apart from the FRAGILE special all in cd/vinyl collection but I’m really hoping for more deluxe editions from YES and THE BEATLES next year!! 🤞🤞🤞(a super deluxe box set from FREE would be amazing!) Thanks Phil and a happy and healthy New Year to you and your family.
Thanks for the list Phil. I have the David Coverdale and Thin Lizzy sets you showed (which finally updated me to CD). I couldn't justify the TKO set, as I have the Rock Candy pressings of all the studio albums. The Vanilla Fudge and Jack Bruce are on my radar for 2025! May consider the Robin Trower, a bit over buying something I already have. About the presentation, many of these boxes are beauties. No denying. Although, I now prefer a CD sized/clamshell collection for ease of storage.
Thanks for the 2nd video today. I have several of the boxes and agree they are great. Robin Trower Bridge of Sighs has versions of the original I play all the time. Many reissues have versions I’ll listen to once and be one and done. Not so with BOS. I hope they do an extended version of his live album from that tour which is amazing but I’m sure has more to offer. Merry Christmas 🎄
Did you record with Handsome Beasts? Fanny, Snafu & Waysted were the underrated finds of the year. BBC Rory Gallagher is gone much like the Thin Lizzy BBC Boxset 😭 Hopefully, HNE will continue the Bernie Torme (R.I.P. 😿) series with his 90's output (maybe even include the outstanding Desperado album)
What no 666 by Aphrodite's Child. The Greek and English versions remastered together with Dolby Atmos and High Definition remasterings. Anyway excellent video.
Hi Phil … hope you and yours have a great Christmas…and a very good new year .. I wonder what’s left for for under the tree now you have that lot under your belt … I myself have the Ziggy set and New Orders Brotherhood to dive into (I hope 😁) Your right about the Sabbath box .. Both Cross Purposes and Forbidden get regular spins …today as it goes … Keep up the good work and take care of yourself…👍
Thank you for this most informative and enjoyable review! I am curious to have your thoughts on the VDGG Charisma years boxset. A must have for fans in my opinion. Keep on trucking. Pierre
Hi Phil. I just wanted to ask if there’s a reason why you keep the cellophane wrapping on some of your your albums/boxsets? Thanks for another great video and unsurprisingly I have one or two of the albums in your top 35!! 🙂
Hi Phil. Hadn't even heard OF T2, but that song's on RUclips and is terrific. Cheers! What I really hope for soon is the 50th Anniversary reissue/remix of the first Rainbow album. That was so significant an album and band. Re Lizzy, a set combining Nightlife and Fighting would be exciting. The Tonka UFO albums deserve the same treatment as the Micky ones. And please let Dweezil Zappa loose on Who Do We Think We Are?! What he could do with Woman from Tokyo alone would be thrilling. Have given up on the Bad Company Rough Diamonds Deluxe edition, but would love to be proved wrong. The Machine Head release in 2024 is a case-in-point. Happy Xmas Day!
@@NowSpinningMagazine Yeah, I figured. BTW, did you get that Townshend-Box with the Live Stuff? I don't remember a Show on it. Though that wouldn't necessarily mean anything.
Hands down the best box set of 2024 is the “Retrospective” 5 Cd box set by Bryan Ferry and is a perfect setlist of everything a real fan would want to hear including previously unreleased songs which are as good as any he’s made before including his new song “Star” which shows Mr Ferry is as relevant as ever . An honourable mention for the new album called “ Gary “ by Blossoms which is beautifully produced and sounds great on my decent HFi and I recommend that you buy the 2 Cd version which has a bonus cd of cover versions which Blossoms do very well .
@@NowSpinningMagazine Hi Phil , HMV have just shaved £25 pounds off the 5 Cd version of Retrospective by Bryan Ferry which is now £99 in their latest sale.
Hi Phil, watched both videos now and really enjoyed them both agree with you the Rory Gallagher box set is a worthy winner as your box set of 2024 incredible, having watched you throughout the year I have purchased many of the box sets you’ve reviewed and cannot disagree with you on your reviews, has for your album of the year Time Machine by the Cats it’s a fine album but imo the live album eclipses it and is my favourite album of the year. So cheers Phil thanks for all the reviews and keeping us in the mix I hope you and your family have a great Christmas all the best till next time 👍👏
I have the greatest respect for you as I to do not remove the shrink wrap if you don't need to - it's there to protect the album once brought does it no longer need protecting? All my top opening ones have the front wrap still on as well but that requires the employment of double-sided tape, but these are my boxsets and I can modify them in any way I want.
I am a little surprised the MSG boxset on the shelf behind you did not quite make your top 35 for 2024. (Unless I missed it). I might have to dig out your review to see if you had some reservations about it.
Didn't Bernie Torme make aa album with Dee Snider. You just sparked an embedded memory. Plus another band called Silver Machine with Gary Barden. Hey Fanny sounds interesting.
Thanks Phil for another excellent summary of the year ... Iknew I might regret not pre-ordering Rory Gallagher (like Camel last year!) ... so hopefully, like Camel, a re-press will come ... bought the SDE Bluray of Thin Lizzy 76 ... already had, via earlier boxes, the complete 10cc and Average White Band material (both stellar bands) ... bought Tull and BJH to add to the collection (BJH is actually a new / recent 2023 recording v re-release) ... but is excellent ... still tempted by Trower / Purple re-releases and Kevin Ayres set looks great ... Question: did you have a chance to listen to both Vigil in the Wilderness and Internal Exile deluxe sets by Fish? These got rave reviews ... would be interested to hear your thoughts .... ... and, hopefully, somebody in marketing- land is taking notes from the likes of yourself and viewer comments on the things that "work" for buyers of physical media .... the Motley Crue set you portrayed recently made me appreciate the value of having Qobuz HiRes streaming as an option v spending money on an, almost, emoty box ... Great video .... CMcG, Aberdeen Scotland
Good list, I missed out on the Rory by getting Fairport's It All Came Round Again Live on BBC boxset instead. Hope it is reissued. My fav boxsets bought this year were: the afforementioned Fairport box The Who - Lifehouse, was a good price in the Jan sales. The Wildhearts - PHUQ deluxe, waited 2+ years for this. Bob Dylan - 1974 Live Recordings boxset, 27 cd's of great music for £75, still going through it & like all I've heard so far. Neil Young - Archives 3 deluxe, it's a rip off, the music is great but he missed so much off. Fish - Vigil & Internal Exile bosets Yardbirds - The Ultimate Live at the BBC Tull, Thin Lizzy & Faces boxsets already mentioned I spent too much again this year.
Besides the recent Christmas release by Jethro Tull. All the Tull box sets give you the 5.1 on a cheap dvd, instead of a Blu-ray disc.I was able to get Aqualung in Blue Ray audio by itself from Russia, four years ago. DVD audio vs. Blu-ray audio will be equal in audio, both 24bit 96klz 5.1 however the Blu-ray will be superior for the graphics. Blu-ray disc are superior in quality. DVD's are more prone to "rot"
Damn shame that lovely Rory Gallagher CD set has been bashed on one corner - that would do my head in. Hopefully you're more grounded and it doesn't bother you.
@@NowSpinningMagazine ah right. The guy I mentioned was my uncle. He said to me before any band played there they had to give him some music, so he could have a listen and see if they’d go down ok. Took no crap, but very fair man. He gave me a load of NWOBHM stuff that bands had given him…including a couple of Handsome Beasts 7” vinyls, a signed by the band album, (“Heroes, Saints & Fools - great album) and 7” off a band called Saracen, a signed by the band 7” off a band called Blitzkrieg (Metallica covers a song of theirs), a magnum 7” signed by the drummer Ken Korin, and loads of others stuff. I liked this episode, really interesting stuff. Also got that Neat records box set, brings back good memories for me. Cheers Phil, best wishes
Easy Action Records from London put out a great little box set of cds by Melanie Safka. It came out about 2 months ago. They are also making some great reissues by Melanie. Stoneground words (expanded reissue) and Autum Lady are must haves for any Melanie fan. RIP lovely lady.
Merry Christmas from America Phil. I hope you and your lovely wife have a nice holiday season, and a fantastic new year. I love your show. Keep up the great work.
Agree 100%. The format for Marillion and Jethro Tull box sets are top of the line
Besides the recent Christmas release. The Tull box sets give the 5.1 on a cheap DVD, instead of a Blu-ray audio disc.

The Bryan Ferry set is something I would love to get. I just ran out of budget to include it
@@NowSpinningMagazine Hi Phil , HMV have just shaved £25 pounds off the 5 Cd version of Retrospective by Bryan Ferry which is now £99 in their latest sale.
Still no Argent box set, I can’t understand why they have been forgotten, such a good catalogue. Maybe 2025 will be there year.
So cheers Phil thanks for all the reviews and keeping us in the mix I hope you and your family have a great Christmas all the best till next time 👍👏
Hi Mike, thank you very much ! Merry Christmas - Phil
Oh, by the way, have you seen that there's an Iron Butterfly BoxSet out?
Hi Oliver, yes I have reviewed that here !
@@NowSpinningMagazine Ah, gotta find that show. Thanks.
Hi Phil from Melbourne Australia. No room for the Bowie box set this year?
I had the room but not the budget unfortunately - Phil
I am a little surprised the MSG boxset on the shelf behind you did not quite make your top 35 for 2024. (Unless I missed it). I might have to dig out your review to see if you had some reservations about it.
Hi Jimmy, you are more observant than me! I really thought that was 2023 ! I have not even created a review video for it either - Phil
Didn't Bernie Torme make aa album with Dee Snider. You just sparked an embedded memory. Plus another band called Silver Machine with Gary Barden. Hey Fanny sounds interesting.
I think he did, although I am not sure if it was ever released or finished ?
With Regards to 'Fish' I haven't yey. I just ran out of time and budget.
Hi Phil, have You forgotten about Aphrodite's Child : 666 , 50th Anniversary Box Set. 4 CDs & Blu Ray ?
Regards, Ralf
It looked great but I was unable to get a copy
@@NowSpinningMagazine You should get by now, ebay has plenty listed.
Maybe You can give us next Year your Opinion ?
Mollie Marriott daughter of Steve Marriott does a good vocal performance on the Rick Wakeman live at the Palladium cd box set
Phil do you have any reviews or information on a band called "Bethnal" and one album I heard many years ago called Crash Landing?; thanks?:
Sorry no, not at this time
Good list, I missed out on the Rory by getting Fairport's It All Came Round Again Live on BBC boxset instead. Hope it is reissued.
My fav boxsets bought this year were:
the afforementioned Fairport box
The Who - Lifehouse, was a good price in the Jan sales.
Fish - Vigil & Internal Exile bosets
Yardbirds - The Ultimate Live at the BBC
Tull, Thin Lizzy & Faces boxsets already mentioned
I spent too much again this year.
Great list!
🙏
Think the only ones I bought this year were :
Killer
Billion dollar babies
Muscle of love
One hand clapping
I thought as a member I could watch this video now but RUclips is not allowing
Please try now
@ thanks 👍
Damn shame that lovely Rory Gallagher CD set has been bashed on one corner - that would do my head in.
Hopefully you're more grounded and it doesn't bother you.
I haven't even noticed!
Hey phil, do you remember playing at the Railway inn pub up in Wolverhampton with the handsome beasts? Do you remember the manager, Bernard Dann?
I remember the venue but not the manager?
Same to you!
