Oh god this one got you pretty badly ..... i mean for me it was so brutal but i did not need to cry.... yea you are more empathetic than we tought probably. Keep up the great work. Oh how much do i love this show and how i am soo hyped for the next episode. AAAAAh im soo much fighting myself to not to read the manga cause i know that this will get a S2 or potentionaly S3 this is just amazing how they portraied the aniexity, the feeling of rush, impatience, mistakes, facades, critique, how not to make an apology on the internet, the suicidal toughts to the choice of music it was a briliant episode. Just like a waterfall..... it cascaded downwards in momentum till the breaking point.
I do wonder when you'll actually make your wife watch this series. Also, one of the things I love about you is that you're not afraid to show your emotions in the internet. Not sure if that was the reason why I subscribed. . . .But it made me want to see more of it. XD Sorry. It just makes me want to give you a BIG HUG. . . or maybe more. . . Hehehe. . . XP
About your question about if people talked like that... They do. Just log into Twitter. What we were hearing were mostly the online bullying and hate that was being thrown towards her.
Luke, unfortunately cyberbulling is a thing nowadays and shouldn't be underestimated. It is no joke that mental health issues especially in young childeren and teenager increased exponentially in the last decade. People on twitter and social media go wild because they feel protected by their anonymity and say outragious things. Especially young people take these things too much to heart just like Akane in this episode. That's why you should be careful to not expose your children too early to social media. I know you are a good person and I think very alike but the sad truth is , that people even outside the internet are bullying like that and get even worse in being physical which was not on display in this episode.
The worst part is that this is actually based on a true story. About a month before this part of the manga was written there was a highly publicized event where a young female entertainer committed suicide after getting canceled online following her appearance on a reality tv show. And that’s just the one this manga chose to pull from. Events like these are frighteningly common.
RIP Hana Kimura. She was a wrestler too and I'd actually seen some of her matches and she was a special performer at such a young age so news of her suicide and the circumstances around it hit hard and this episode brought them back.
This arc was inspired by the story of Hana Kimura, a female professional wrestler who had committed suicide due to the harassment online after an altercation that took place on the TV reality show Terrace House, a show where six people live together to find love. This is an excerpt of an article that talked about how the incident was staged : "Producers wanted Hana to act violently towards Kobayashi, and told her to slap him. She refused and settled on knocking off the hat instead. She told her family and friends she wanted to be a professional on TV, but producers wanted her to be obnoxious and play up a heel character to help the ratings. Kobayshi has since confirmed that the moment was staged." This ultimately led to Japan passing a law that makes cyberbullying punishable by up to a year in prison. RIP Hana Kimura : September 3, 1997 - May 23, 2020
From what I've read elsewhere, many of the comments used to cyberbully Akane in this episode were the actual comments used in the cyberbullying of Hana Kimura. So when it's being asked "do people actually say these things?", the answer is "yes" - and this is probably tame by comparison.
31:22 Akane mentioned that by their contract they are not allowed to talk about anything that happened off camera. That goes for Yuki (the other girl) too. Even if she wanted to defend her, she'd have to break her contract to do so.
They also were all most likely trying to help her in ways that wouldn't breach their contract, but she's so trapped in her depression and um... THOSE thoughts, that she doesn't truly register any of it, therefore we're not shown it. This episode is from her perspective, after all.
As a manga reader, I felt sad everytime I watch the show's opening and see Akane crying and huddling under the sheets and now all of us know why. Poor girl needs some hugs, thank god Aqua came to the rescue.
@@fivegears I was both looking forward to and dreading this episode. Was wondering if they would end it at the end of the chapter like they did or cut to credits right after she stepped off the railing, that would be beyond cruel.
@@RenderingUser Yeah I've been rereading each chapter after every episode and it's 3 chapters. I was just wondering if they'd take liberties with rearranging some scenes e.g. removing some of the flashforward scenes from chapters 1-10 that may give away the fact that Ai wasn't going to make it.
@@FrizFroz unfortunately they didn't I really wanted Ep 4 to adapt 4 chapters for that perfect ending but seems like they're really strict with the 3 chapter thing. No matter how weird some of the endings are But to be fair, I've run the math and I think the possible season 2 finale is gonna be legendary
Best episode after episode 1. Poor Akane, I was glad Aqua saved her. I think bullying should be a crime. People committed suicide because they couldn't deal with bullies anymore. It should not be taken lightly.
@@RenderingUser come on man, this episode just dropped. It's a tragic moment, let people think about the message of the show first before talking about this
If you watch the credits they included a helpline at the end I was so happy they did that, this exact situation has happened IRL. Unfortunate no one was able to save them, I know one incident which I believe this was based of. My heart was beating, I was so scared. Nearly teared up too.
24:43 the thing about the bullying is what we're seeing in the show is fully from akane's perspective, so we're only seeing the dark side, even if there are people helping her, her mind would be cancelling them out, which is what we're seeing, the only time we see the others caring is when she needs an excuse to go out, aqua is following her and near her the whole time, but we dont see him until he makes the move, in other shows we would see someone following her but here we dont, because its fully from her perspective. Amazing writing imo
@@Azure_Sky222Yeah i get that. a lot of people gets supporting and positive comments but the one that really gets stuck on your mind is the negative ones
The reasons others don't say anything publicly is, firstly, there's a contract in place, they cannot say about stuffs outside of what's shown on the show, Akane mentioned about the contract too, so she could only do a simple apology without going into details. Secondly, although they were worried about her, they don't know how serious it was at the time.
What do the petals symbolize? The fleetingness of life. You see falling Sakura petals before Ai’s death and the flashbacks of her life which was the same as Akane’s almost death.
Not so fun fact: The way Aqua pulled Akane up should be basically impossible, to emphasize that this is fiction, because in real life, people are not getting pulled back from there
@@Dontfucklewithdashuckle iirc there is a height difference in the potrayal of the anime than the manga, idk i have not re-checked it but i think akane pov is much lower here. than the manga its done so people can actually feel the tension.
27:40 made me tear up too mate. I remember reading this in manga I already felt where things were going. Deep inside I was screaming "please someone stop her!" Sigh of relief when Aqua got her... Damn... I don't know if I'd have strength to continue with the series if this ended tragically.
As mentioned earlier, the other actors are under a contract, and are not allowed to speak about what happened off-camera. The fault is on the producers of the show. They purposely cut the full context of what happened, in order to draw controversy and views, by turning her into the "villain". Basically, they threw a teenage girl under the bus for profit. That's reality TV for ya. The producers knew she'd face backlash, and they had the power to just leave it out, but no, drama was more important, and even after seeing the damage it caused her, refused to clarify, or defend her. The greedy producers of that show were almost responsible for a teenage girl's death.
I knew this anime was going to lower our guard and then come back and hit us in the feels like the first episode did. I did not expect it to hit this hard. This show is constantly blowing away my expectations.
Aside from the terrifying fact that this episode was based on a true story, the creator of the manga actually went and did research on many things around the entertainment industry. And since this is an anime adaptation of the manga, all of us manga readers can roughly tell when certain moments will get shown. For example, doing the prologue as 1hr 20mins and not split in 3-4 episodes was the best decision they could make.
25:12 Luke, in Japan, bullying is worse, it's often physical. It is common for children and adolescents to take their own lives because of this, unfortunately. And here in Brazil, it's almost as heavy, but suicide is relatively less common here. And this show.. this show got me, what an amazing episode and so sad
Yeah, I live in the Brazil and it was actually even heavier than what was show in the episode, I went to a public school and there I suffered the physical bullying, to the point of people trying to literally pull my hair from my head... I ran away from it to a particular one and I got the verbal bullying part but in a way bigger scale than the physical one could ever hit.
@@Luke0Maker it's a shame things are like this, it was bad 10 years ago when I was in high school, now it's worse, and I feel it will continue to get worse... it's very sad. I got bullied a few times, but it wasn't very often. Some colleagues of mine have psychological problems even today, since that time
Japan is the most polite country in the world Yet their online community is also the same with the rest of the world. It's just crazy how internet has changed our culture
If you think this is exaggerated... no, it's not. This is so real it actually hurts. People DO talk like this under the coat of anonymity. They don't give a single f about the people they hate. On the contrary they enjoy every second of the harassment. Thing is... there is no Aqua in real life. Most stories in real life don't end like this episode. And people still don't care afterwards. The internet is rotten to the core, you seem to have no idea. Maybe that's for the better
As a manga reader, i always still felt emotional rollercoaster each time intense episode came out, and become more attached to the character, the manga itself has one of the best if not the best characters, love them all and the anime is clearly made with love, the Oshi no ko official channel gave lots of behind the scene, interview and choreography if you wanna dance them song and workout for one hour hahaaha as for Yuki on why she's not doing anything, it is very complicated on her part, because just saying something can result her breaching contract either with her agency or the show and even making things worst like people may say Akane threatening her to say that, because in the end sometimes those type of people just wanted to say bad things to other people who they decide as a villain... sadly these things are not just fiction.....not just the case this episode based on, but there are more.... Thank you for the upload!! you're so fast like Kanna devouring baking soda for 10 seconds hahahaha
Here we go, it's time to get reminded that this show is actually a story of tragedy. The twitter comments were not just realistic, they are real comments from people harassing Hana Kimura online. The episode is based on her story.
I loved how they adapted that whole last scene, with the cuts between the real world and that kind of delusion, the scenes of her hard work and the people trash talking about her and with the content they added from later on in the manga to show how hard she worked. They are doing briliant work with the adaption, I am already so hyped for a certain part of season two while this one is still running lmao.
Absolutely excellent episode, so emotionally gripping, this was one of the best chapters in the manga and they somehow made it even better; it's so rare to get an adaptation like this that takes top tier source material and somehow elevates it even further. This episode should be required viewing for anybody who actively uses Twitter, the world would be a far better place if it helped a lot of these people stop being such utter human garbage and actually develop a sense of empathy. You guys will see as the anime continues to progress through the manga and covers more and more various topics but I never cease to be impressed by Aka Akasaka's thorough understanding of the entire entertainment industry (including the social media influencer space).
25:38 "Who was that?" Doesn't matter who specifically, but it was someone who knew of her, was even a fan of her acting from before the dating show, so it stung even more
Unfortunately, there's not a lot Yuki could have said that would have helped Akane in this situation. All of the participants of the show were under contract, and one of the stipulations of that contract was they weren't allowed to talk about things that happened OFF camera during the running of the show. Since the show only showed the slap and cut before anything else (and the producers probably wouldn't have shown it regardless because the slap was the "juicy" part and the rest would have taken away from it), Akane's apology and Yuki forgiving her can't be discussed - which means there's little Yuki could have done to dampen the hate. And honestly, Yuki trying to do anything in a roundabout way to stay within terms of the contract might have actually made it worse.
Yep, if she said anything the mob would be like “how dare the producers force poor Yuki to protect that bitch after she got assaulted”. Like there’s no winning in this type of situation. That’s why internet mobs are the worst
I was on the verge of tears, this episode was particularly relatable to me, as I was basically isolated in 6th grade due to nasty rumors spread by ex friends, and being bullied by half of my grade the only people I could basically rely on was 3 friends who didn't care about what was going on around me or what it could mean for their reputation, and my family, the teachers were involved, but they did almost absolutely nothing as they didn't see or hear most of the rumors, and the bullying was going on for most of the year and started to actually take action near the end of the school year. These kinds of things do happen, after that I changed schools as that was the last year in school before middle school where I live, and my parents searched for a small high school and made sure almost to no kid in my class was transferring over there, and I was so scared it would happen again, I put on act and developed a protection in my brain and scared out of my mind it would happen all over again and also the friends I did make I held them with a wariness, and didn't let them get too close. While dealing with the feelings of depression and other dark thoughts. I'm getting help with them now, and my parents are helping along the way. I hope so much Akane gets the help she needs as mine wasn't to her level where anytime she opens her phone she gets reminded of it, the situation sucks, and probably happens to multiple of idols, also, plus it was from her perspective so it only shows the negative comments cause those are probably the ones she read and retained, also at 25:40 - the article/post she was reading wasn't someone close or someone who was introduced, it was just a post from an ex fan posting why he's gonna stop supporting her, which probably even if never meeting him, it shows the cruelty and how much she values fans, and how bad the situation is for her which even if no one knows who's the poster, it shows how much of an impact a post can make
In addition to Hana Kimura's suicide, in the west, I'm sure you all remember the online vitriol that flamed Will Smith after his infamous slap about a year ago (2022), and his online "non-apology" video. And of course, when there was some drama between chess streamers GM Hikaru Nakamura and the Botez sisters about two years ago (2021), people were quick to point out how Hikaru had apparently been nasty in the past and that everyone had a "Hikaru" story. And of course, there was the chess drama between ChessBae and ChessBrah regarding copyright takedowns... You can find tons of RUclips and Reddit comments flaming the people involved for being toxic. So yeah, regarding 24:08, people definitely talk like this in real life. It sucks.
The reason no one else is saying anything was mentioned in the episode, there's a contract that states that they cannot talk about anything that hasn't been aired on the show, it doesn't only apply to Akane
Lezgooo! I couldn't help but had my expectations high in this one so I was really glad I still had goosebumps at the latter half of the episode! It's literally one of my fave chapters in the manga including the next episode which I AM SO HYPED FOR! I can't wait for next week! PS: 30:49 I've mentioned it in my comments on the previous episodes but I knew that Episode 6&7 will be where my favorite scenes will be because each episode progression since episode 2 has been exactly 3 chapters from the manga. ^_^
31:10 Yuki huh. You see I see her character like this. She's a good girl. Normal good girl. It's just that her nature is just confident and taking everything to her advantage, a normal character to have in a girl growing up with beauty. Basically her real intention is both being good natured to people she likes but still calculating and use everything to her advantage. If i were to word it bad she's a two faced B. Wording it well she's just a confused little girl.
We 're so hooked to this becuse it feels so real!!! Once again you see the light side of it from Ruby, and Kana, who explains in a comedic way the problem (in this episode the "egosurfing") and then Aqua's side shows you the darkest side of it. Akane nearly killed herself becuase the ciberbullyng and comments from people (who doesnt know you and your situation). Something that it's a actuall problem for a lot of young people right now. At the end of this episode they show you the info and contact of the mental healt and suicide help-line Waiting so much for what Aqua is going to do next. I'm sure he's going to do something similar than with Kana. We know he is very knowledge of the media after all.
I haven’t seen the reaction just yet but Luke and everyone seeing this comment, I hope everyone is doing ok and if not remember there will always be close ones to you that love and appreciate you, you are never alone, make sure to reach out and talk to someone if you ever need it.
The most messed up part from all of this is how the TV show included that in the material and aired it on TV, KNOWING that Akane will get harsh feedback. Even the staff encouraged her to play the villain, but made sure to say "Im not ordering you" so they dont fall responsible, just in case. They were willing to ruin her reputation just so there's more talk about the show and they get more exposure and their ratings go up. And look where that took us. Then they have those stupid rules where they're not allowed to talk about anything behind the scenes. Not even exceptions for situations like this that get out of hand. It's so messed up. All these TV shows and similar things objectify the people too much and that adds to people online forgetting that they are talking about other human beings. They get treated like objects with no feelings. It's just so bad
"I grew up around bullying" In person. When people get to dogpile on a popular target from the anonymous safety of social media they can get so much more vicious because the person they're attacking feels more like a character on their screen than any person they've met in their real life
Thank you for the no spoilers. I am a manga reader for this so I knew it was coming since like the show started but I was so frustrated when I looked and I saw nearly everyone's thumbnail spoiled the big twist at the end of episode 1 and it made me mad so I really appreciate you not putting spoilers there for clicks
So in the defense of why none of the actors jumped to her defense, she mentions it in the episode briefly but they are under contract that they can’t talk about anything that isn’t shown on camera. So they can’t talk about how they made up, she can’t even say don’t defend me because she can’t undermine the vision of the producers and how the episode was framed, which you will see elaborated on next episode.
So I just came across a manga extra drawn by Aka (not quite sure how much you know, so the manga is made by 2 people, the artist is Mengo, while the story writer is Aka who wrote Kaguya Love is War), which lead to me looking at the other extras since I don't get updates on them. One of them is Yuki (the girl that got scratched) when the flaming stuff happened. Seems that the bit at 14:40 was her trying to get Akane to be more competitive and hype her up. When the twitter hate stuff started she got really guilty about it before being cheered up by Nobuyuki, who is the dark haired dancer dude on the show.
The other cast member didn't speak up because it's part of their contract. They can't talk about things not recorded, things behind the scene. From the business perspective, it's the right call. But in this case, the contract is hurting their actor/actress...
What I love is that the author didn't get the need to turn to Yuki into the secret villain: she didn't get unfairly angry, attacked Akane or didn't use this situation to take advantage of the drama on purpose (at least as far as I know I haven't read further in the manga). Because in reality things are not so black and white, in these dramas the small altercations do not usually have heroes against monsters, it us as a society who have taken upon ourself of judges, juries and executioners by taking sides and lynching anyone who does not agree with our way of thinking. And dont forget how the entertainment medium doesnt help neither, the show or the TV channel could support Akane and clarify everything, but drama sells and those who end up benefiting are only those at the top, fuck those involved.
About internet bullying. Only a small minority are actual toxic. But in her mental state were she was under pressure to perform she only saw the bad ones. They were accentuating her view point by only showing us the bad ones on screen. I'm not excusing them, I'm just pointing out that the Tweeter Mob is usually made up of the vocal minority that takes things to the extreme to have their voices heard.
I watched this eps twice. First time I put in my own shoes. Second time I try to put my perpective in her. Getting your trusted person take your blame. Having people say bad thing about your mom. Lastly as a performer losing a fan, especially for someone who regurlarly do egosurf and remember her top fans. To top it off she's a girl in her teen. Honestly good job catching her there Aqua.
Wow... that was.... yes, that was brutal. I agree with you, Luke. Great episode, so interesting and breakhearting of course 😢💔 Akane didn't deserve that for sure.😔 What a shame that they will adapt only 11 episodes bc it is getting better and better.... And man, I love Aqua since the 1st ep but now I think I love him even more. Great character 😌 Last, Queen Bee released today the official MV of "Mephisto" with English lyrics. I think you should check it. Have a nice day and greetings🤗😊
What kills me is the shot of Akane smiling at her reflection, ready to take on another day then cutting to how low her outlook had become. This girl is full of life and potential and was crushed under the internet's wave of uncaring comments. It's like watching a puppy get punished for being excited.
im not someone that cries over shows and this was not the special case either, yet i really appreciated your way of reacting, it shows how deeply you empathized with akane and how honestly interested you were in her feelings. it's great to see someone who really deeply appreciate what this show has to offer
i don't know if this anime has manga or like original anime who did't have manga or ln but i always pay attention to every single detail in every anime that i watch, so the person responsible for the yuki incident is yuki herself, sounds crazy? let me explain, 1. in episode 5 ruby say to aqua that she recommend her(yuki) because she is a nice girl, then aqua said "you are not good at judging people" 2. in this episode 5 yuki say to aqua that she is .... and that was not yuki's fact, she lie, but it become fact if that refer to akane. 3. in this episode what yuki put on Akane's nails (on the index finger to be exact) is glass and it's been proven several times, at 13:30 yuki said she won't let it happen this line is the strong fact that prove that also you can clearly see the glass shining and in 13:36 yuki's evil smirk showed and we can exactly see that it is a glass even yuki took that glass with tweezers because she knows if she took it with her finger, her finger will be injured 4. in this episode at 14:28 we can clearly see that the wound is caused by the glass that yuki put on akane's index finger nail and i think the reason for color changed is to hide it. 5. I wouldn't be surprised if one of the netizens, especially here, suspects that comment at 22:10 is Yuki's comment, i don't know it is true or not because i can't see her as a nice girl anymore not even bad girl.
31:00 I'm not a manga reader so idk what Yuki is really like behind the scenes. But to give her the benefit of the doubt, Akane herself pointed it out at 18:55 that they cannot talk about anything off camera. This is also the reason why Akane just apologized. Because she can't say "Yuki and I were able to resolve the situation and are on good terms." Also, regarding bullying, I live in PH and I saw something like this happen in elementary and high school. Looking back, I've realized that kids and teenagers could have the most wholesome interactions but also the most f*cked up ones. That's because their moral compass are still being molded at that stage. The worst part is, they're sometimes unaware of how hurtful they're being. I think this is part of the reason why most traumas are formed during childhood/teenage years. Where people are at their most reckless and naive. And where some are at their most edgy. If you let a bunch of impressionable people interact with the world, situations like this are bound to happen.
To your question of "do people really talk like this": Yes. They don't talk like this to your face though. They keep it hush hush, behind looked doors. But with social media gave this behaviour a completely new stage. Here, people are largly "anonym". And with that wall between "me" and "me online" comes a weard sort of "bravery" that spurts people on to say whatever they want online, without thinking of the consequenzes. Becouse "it's online, everyone does it, right? And it's not like anyone will know it was me anyways~"
While a lot of people do go behind profile pictures and the comfort of anonymity, there are people who'd say it to your face and even get physically abusive with what they're doing. Speaking from experience. This episode still hits hard even during this third rewatch cuz...well, I've been driven to this corner too... To people struggling with these tendeicies. I don't guarantee that things will get better. It depends on you. And trust me, it depends on you so it never can get better too. But whoever is dealing with these things I really do hope things get better at some point. Stay strong and brave the storm
29:02 Btw love is war author is the same author who did oshi no ko , its kinda ironic that kaguya for the most part light hearted compare to what he writes in oshi no ko
Bullying can be very intense. I have been victim of bullying for several years during my school life and I was on the verge of giving up us well because it seemed that nothing mattered on how I handled things. Everything was wrong. I neeeded several stayings in psychiatry for some years to finally accept past. I am good now but when I am walking around my hometown, I am unable without listening to music at full volume on my headphones because of the feeling that people talk ill about me behind my back. That episode was intense and I had to fight tears as well but a real tearjerker was a movie called "A Silent Voice" from 2016. It is a two-hour anime movie about a girl getting bullied due to her being deaf and once she left the bully gets ostracized by his classmates. It is really a beautiful movie. Just give it a try. It is the best anime movie in the last recent years.
14:17 because Aka Asakasa is one of the best character writers in manga/anime, and the animation studio is bringing their anime movie level A game with every episode. You haven't gotten there yet, but Kaguya-Sama is also masterfully written to a similar degree. More a comedy focus but comedy and tragedy are 2 sides of the same coin, you need to be able to write interesting people if you want to achieve greatness in either.
I confirm people can talk like that. I dealt with a lot of bullying and no one came to save me. I was alone. The bullying never went away, not until I left school. Every day I was told to die, that I wasn't worth anything and the world would be better without me in it. So this episode really hit home for me.
20:13 bullying is pretty bad in japan not sure if the worst but definetly worse than UK Dont know if you know yet but oshi no ko is from the same author as love is war
As a manga reader, not gonna spoil anything but Akane is best girl in my book. Not sure if they'll show it within in this season but if they do, y'all will know why. Everyone's in a huge treat. Poor baby cinnamon bun.. I need to give her a hug QAQ
it wasn't focused on the anime but in the manga the reason for the cut was actually the accessories Yuki put on her fingers which made it just an unlucky accident
About your question about the bully stuff. It is all real, it is not even something rare in internet world especially if you in idol culture (me in VTuber circle). I myself already see many thing like this happen in the industry. It is hard reality we live in. Anonymous identity make people show their true self and they think they can say anything behind the screen because people wont recognize them.
I think the bullying is much worse as Akane is a celebrity and people have this... expectations when it comes to people who are public figures. Extra sad coincidence is that this week I saw a clip from a vtuber who had left her agency before and is now indie. She left after she got doxxed and harrassed and it was so bad and she mentioned she tried taking her life and just (luckily) failed. These things do happen and it's just much worse online cause everyone just feels more connected and reachable.
24:09 Yes, this is not just an anime/tv show thing, people do talk like that, especially behind screens where you can anonymously type whatever you want and get away with it.
I used to watch a lot of Korean dramas and I can't describe the amount of cruel and ugly bullying they show, and I had always thought it was just for the shocking/dramatic effect to get more views.. but as I learned more about the culture and reality of bullying in south korea, I stopped watching their shows and am still honestly disgusted by the way people can treat each other.
To everyone who watched the Ep: The events of this episode were directly based on a real incident that happened on a Japanese reality show with a young star named Hana Kimura. Please be respectful if you choose to discuss this topic and please seek out help if you are struggling with related issues.
23:08 They all are in agency, their tweets or any kind of publicity pretty much controlled by their agency. When drama/stuff like this happened, they most likely tell their talents to not engaging in the drama becaue it can fuel the fire more. Imagine if Yuki tweet something about defending Akane, people would just compare them more and more. Praising Yuki up while bringing Akane down.
24:30 At least here (America), people really says things on that level. It's not something you see every day, but if you look for, you find It, and she's searching for her name in the anime, so it's easier to find this kind of people saying this kind of psychotic things At the end of the day, people think not showing their names let them do whatever they want to whoever they want
This story about Akane is based off a real life situation. The character she was based on received harassment like this and ended up taking their life as a result. It's happened several times to reality TV stars. Things like this do happen and have happened. People do talk like this on the internet because its behind a screen and doesn't feel real.
As someone who's deep into the kpop/kdrama/anime fandoms.. I've seen all these things happen. The entertainment industry and the internet are very dark. Very very dark.
28:29 If you didn't know, Kaguya-sama's manga was written by the same author as Oshi no ko, so you pointed out some similarities previously, well that's why hahaha.
I haven't read the source material but i think its possible the girl that got scratched said something to try and stop the bullying. Having said that it might be best to not acknowledge it because if you do it can light a fire in the cyber bullies. P.S i loved the video!
I think the most haunting heartbreaking part of this episode is the moment she decides to jump. The light is golden, she has surrended. She's finally at peace. Only to have it pulled away by Aqua saving her. If you've ever known someone who suicided, try to put yourself in their shoes. The weight of the world is terrifying, when you carry it alone.
Yeah, it's like this. Japanese are absolutely ruthless on the internet. There's probably a couple cases of suicides that happened due to cyberbullying there. People stop thinking about the consequences once they get the protection and anonimity of the internet and can say what they want. And it's not only Japanese in actuality pretty much anyone around the world can be capable of this toxicity online.
Yeah just watched ur reaction, and it got me the same way. I would of watched it earliar but my daughter and me has made it a watch when it comes out night and I dont like to spoil it. My daughter has been reading manga and light novel for this show and told me something after it was over, which broke my heart even. Apparently this episode or scene of the comments and girl jumping off bridge actually happend in real life and was based off the suicide. Luckily Aqua was there which was only difference. The world and people can be heartless and non caring instead of sympathy and understanding that we dont truly know what goes on with each individual and circumstances.
Every time you insult someone online, that could be it. That could be the point of no return. Respect and love, because we all need happiness in our lives.
Don't worry man I'm right there with you. Edit: Thank you for watching out with the thumbnails, you upload so fast it often pops up in my recommendations before I get the chance to watch the episode.
I would like to say as someone who is depressed (Medicated), anytime a show or movie has a scene like that, it always has my heart racing. I imagine myself in both of the characters' shoes. The one about to die and the person who rescues them. I sometimes feel like if I just died, all my problems will go away but when a character rescues the other, I have the same feeling of "Please, I beg of you. Don't do it. You think you'll be happier and everyone will if you're just gone but that's so not the case." That's what reminds me that I need to keep living and going, even if my life is hard. I'm only 20 years old and is told that I have an amazing life ahead of me. So do all of you and there's someone out there who cares about you so much. Don't forget that. I haven't and I was able to get the help I need. You matter. I love you all (Platonically) ☺️🥹
thanks for your reaction it was such an emotional episode, I really enjoyed it and Iove how genuine your reactions are. Your relief at the end was priceless
**spoiler for this episode*** I believe this scandal was intentional to some extant, when the other female cast done akane nails she told her that she wont let her steal her light and she held a gem, latter she applied that gem as prat of Akane nail polish and I think that what made the slap leaving a burse, it is just my speculation I have no prior knowledge, I might be completely wrong. also I screamed Aqua please save Akane when she jumped, I have no idea why guess I really wanted someone to save her and Aqua was the safest bet
keep in mind one thing before hating on the popular girl, they're under contract so they cannot say anything that is not shown on the show, so she cant defend Akane if her defending Akane is not on the show
In regard to people that were involved that should be jumping into defend, Akane mentioned briefly that their contract stipulates they can't talk about anything that didn't air. So, despite Akane and the other girl burying the hatchet on set, it never made it on the air. That said, I don't see why the other girl couldn't come out and say that maybe they made up after the fact.
Yes it happens a lot in the world. Like I guess it wasnt that bad for your experience, but Ive known a LOT of people suffering from depression because of bullying... This swarm of hate comments are so true, it teared me up... So many people died because of them..
I don't think people talk like that in actual real life in front of the person, but on the internet...people are awful with their comments, I can't believe how come they have so much hatred inside of them to type things like that
Here's the thing. The US and presumably britain based on your reaction had a headstart on combating bulling. We were the first ones to really address bullying and come up with countermeasures. A lot of countries don't have the same development. A lot of countries have strong bullying problems. Especially japan. Not only that, there are laws that unintentionally encourages bullying in japan. You also have the consider Japan's culture. Japan has a strong sense of unity. In the past it is common to violently harass anyone who acts out of line. This is due to a lot of history and geography that I'm going to explain here. If you want to know the finer details read the second paragraph. But most relevant thing about this is this a strong excuse for bullies to use in order to target others. This is reason why bullying is so widespread in japan. Its a historical factor. Combine that with the accidental encouragement from the law, you get yourself a society were bullying thrives. This paragraph is optional. The history and geography of japan lead to this situation. Japan is one of the biggest hot spots for natural disasters. It is abysmally boundless in the amount of natural disasters they have. Typhoons, earthquakes, tsunami. There is so much of nature trying to kill you in japan. In order to survive japan had to develop a certain type of culture. Harmony. You cannot fall out of line. You have to be one with the group. If anyone acts out of line, we all die. That is notion etched into their minds. In order to survive, teamwork is required. Anyone who doesn't comply is risking the lives of others. This culture was created in order to survive. It's like evolution. Survival of the fittest. What works survive. What doesn't work dies. This culture of harmony and compliance only exist because it was what allowed japan to survive. History doesn't die easily. You often see its ugly head rearing in not so great ways. The echos of the past has a way of affecting those who only came into existence several lifetimes afterwards. With modern technology, japan now has better ways dealing with these natural disasters, but obviously events like the 2011 japanese earthquake can still happen so this idea of compliance still need to exist. Even in the more recent decades, it was socially acceptable to for a random stranger to beat up your own kid and discipline them for misbehaving. Knowing this its easy to see why bullying was such an acceptable thing back then and its only until recent times that japan has tried to crack down on bullying. Although, their attempts have inadvertently encouraged it. One of the laws, encourages teachers overlook and ignore bullying instead of stepping in. If even the slightest bit of bullying gets a teacher in trouble. You don't get any reward for stepping in before it gets worse. You're often encouraged to ignore it and overlook the snowballing of the bullying. Stepping in gets you in trouble, because it's like you're acknowledging it exist even though it just started or its just small. That acknowledgement puts you at odds with the law, so teachers are encouraged to cover up bullying rather than ending it. Japan is just one out of several countries with a bullying problem. There are worst countries with bullying. Bullying is extremely prevalent and strong across the globe. Every countries have their own unique set of circumstances that creates for a thriving bullying ecosystem. Japan is just one of many. The US and britain are kinda lucky that they addressed it early. They went through the growing pains most other countries haven't.
Oh, bullying in Japan is harsh. There have been countless cases of school bullying caused suicides, and they're not pretty stories by any means. Often it's more like actual psychological torture, commonly with an element of humiliation. And that's just school bullying - Japanese online criticism can make cancel culture in the west look like nothing in comparison. This episode was even inspired by something that actually happened.
Thanks Luke i had just watched the episode, i was still crying, i opened youtube and here i am... that girl, the last words she said, i've been saying it often, so it hurt, how this episode hurt for me it was definitely written by someone who has been through something similar it's so sad but amazing at the same time how is it possible?
It's common in asian countries. It's too easy too create controversies. It's also very easy to add fuel to this.Being an Asian I feel really sad that there are actually people like this eho tend to bully people online real harsh. 24:35
The reason why Yuki didn’t say anything is kinda explained by Akane herself. They can’t say anything in the public that’s not shown in the show, because they signed a contract. This happens for a lot of reality TV, the producers can edit and manipulate your reputation however they want, and you don’t have the rights to clarify anything or defend yourself.
This shit got WAY TOO REAL ×_× I dont remember the last time I felt this lvl of releaf from the MC saving someone. Again way too real. The lvl of realism portraing social medid is freaking scary 😵😵💫

During the last part when people are trashtalking Akane, I think the voices are online comments, those are the kind of comments you find in twitter.
I do wonder when you'll actually make your wife watch this series. Also, one of the things I love about you is that you're not afraid to show your emotions in the internet. Not sure if that was the reason why I subscribed. . . .But it made me want to see more of it. XD
Sorry.
And this kinda thing not only happen 1 times
Iirc, some of these comments in the episode is directly copied from the hana kimura's cyberbullying comment. Like, the exact copy
@@dragonguard666 Honestly i hope this episode helps at least some ppl to rethink their actions, this type of behaviour cannot continue...
@@poophead8188 only natural that every manga reader is aware of it thanks to the scanlation group
This arc was inspired by the story of Hana Kimura, a female professional wrestler who had committed suicide due to the harassment online after an altercation that took place on the TV reality show Terrace House, a show where six people live together to find love. This is an excerpt of an article that talked about how the incident was staged :
"Producers wanted Hana to act violently towards Kobayashi, and told her to slap him. She refused and settled on knocking off the hat instead. She told her family and friends she wanted to be a professional on TV, but producers wanted her to be obnoxious and play up a heel character to help the ratings. Kobayshi has since confirmed that the moment was staged."
This ultimately led to Japan passing a law that makes cyberbullying punishable by up to a year in prison.
RIP Hana Kimura : September 3, 1997 - May 23, 2020
Real sad 😢 RIP
@@purplerose5424 23. That shows how messed up this industry is. Shit, my siblings are about 23 too, and i still feel like they're kids.
@@beng4ll967 oh yeah, my bad.
From what I've read elsewhere, many of the comments used to cyberbully Akane in this episode were the actual comments used in the cyberbullying of Hana Kimura. So when it's being asked "do people actually say these things?", the answer is "yes" - and this is probably tame by comparison.
what happened to the producer? Did they get fired?
31:22 Akane mentioned that by their contract they are not allowed to talk about anything that happened off camera. That goes for Yuki (the other girl) too. Even if she wanted to defend her, she'd have to break her contract to do so.
luke need to see this
True 💯
They also were all most likely trying to help her in ways that wouldn't breach their contract, but she's so trapped in her depression and um... THOSE thoughts, that she doesn't truly register any of it, therefore we're not shown it. This episode is from her perspective, after all.
The plot showed here is actually realistic, internet abuse is the worst mental pressure for an idol.
its realistic bcs its based off of a real case, if you want to know more search hana kimura, keep in mind its pretty bad
@@priestofthighs3013 thanks for the info
Not only for an idol. For everyone
also school bully is notorious among japanese middle/high school, the "just die" quote is the staple of it
Its same thing as Etika's situation.
Actually Etika's situation is worse because Keemstar made joke out of it.
As a manga reader, I felt sad everytime I watch the show's opening and see Akane crying and huddling under the sheets and now all of us know why. Poor girl needs some hugs, thank god Aqua came to the rescue.
Manga reader as well and I was genuinely ANXIOUS about this episode. I knew they were going to animate it well, but to that end that made it tougher.
@@fivegears I was both looking forward to and dreading this episode. Was wondering if they would end it at the end of the chapter like they did or cut to credits right after she stepped off the railing, that would be beyond cruel.
@@FrizFroz nah
They seem bent on adapting precisely 3 chapters each episode
@@RenderingUser Yeah I've been rereading each chapter after every episode and it's 3 chapters. I was just wondering if they'd take liberties with rearranging some scenes e.g. removing some of the flashforward scenes from chapters 1-10 that may give away the fact that Ai wasn't going to make it.
@@FrizFroz unfortunately they didn't
I really wanted Ep 4 to adapt 4 chapters for that perfect ending but seems like they're really strict with the 3 chapter thing. No matter how weird some of the endings are
But to be fair, I've run the math and I think the possible season 2 finale is gonna be legendary
Best episode after episode 1.
Poor Akane, I was glad Aqua saved her.
I think bullying should be a crime. People committed suicide because they couldn't deal with bullies anymore. It should not be taken lightly.

If only cyberbullying was that simple
If you watch the credits they included a helpline at the end I was so happy they did that, this exact situation has happened IRL. Unfortunate no one was able to save them, I know one incident which I believe this was based of.
My heart was beating, I was so scared. Nearly teared up too.
They did? Oh a very good idea for an episode like this.
I've heard, it's very heartbreaking
24:43 the thing about the bullying is what we're seeing in the show is fully from akane's perspective, so we're only seeing the dark side, even if there are people helping her, her mind would be cancelling them out, which is what we're seeing, the only time we see the others caring is when she needs an excuse to go out, aqua is following her and near her the whole time, but we dont see him until he makes the move, in other shows we would see someone following her but here we dont, because its fully from her perspective. Amazing writing imo
It's so relatable. Being depressed and suicidal cancels out all the help people will offer you. One person's negative comment will ruin you.
@@Azure_Sky222Yeah i get that. a lot of people gets supporting and positive comments but the one that really gets stuck on your mind is the negative ones
That is true as well. Didn't think about that.
Yup! Hope he sees this.
What do the petals symbolize? The fleetingness of life. You see falling Sakura petals before Ai’s death and the flashbacks of her life which was the same as Akane’s almost death.
I feel so bad for Akane. When Aqua save her I'm just screaming like "Omg Aqua, thank you so much. I can't see another character gone just like that"
Aqua is done seeing the entertainment industry kill people.
@@Dontfucklewithdashuckle The way she was grabbed was absolutely shown for dramatic timing - we got some recursive fiction here.
Aqua really just stole everyone's heart with this episode!
27:40 made me tear up too mate. I remember reading this in manga I already felt where things were going. Deep inside I was screaming "please someone stop her!"
Sigh of relief when Aqua got her... Damn... I don't know if I'd have strength to continue with the series if this ended tragically.
It does such an amazing job of building all those emotions up for the jump and then aqua... Just brilliant
Glad to know best boy won't let that happen!
Not to waifu material!
The first episode literally showed us how dark this show can get and yet... It keeps tricking us 😂
Aside from the terrifying fact that this episode was based on a true story, the creator of the manga actually went and did research on many things around the entertainment industry.
And since this is an anime adaptation of the manga, all of us manga readers can roughly tell when certain moments will get shown.
For example, doing the prologue as 1hr 20mins and not split in 3-4 episodes was the best decision they could make.
if i remember. what happens in this episode is inspired by a real life event where, sadly, the person didnt make it
kimura hana
Hana Kimura is an example,
What's darker is that the last few bits of comments before the bridge scene was taken from the actual hate tweets that Kimura received
25:12 Luke, in Japan, bullying is worse, it's often physical. It is common for children and adolescents to take their own lives because of this, unfortunately. And here in Brazil, it's almost as heavy, but suicide is relatively less common here. And this show.. this show got me, what an amazing episode
and so sad
Yeah, I live in the Brazil and it was actually even heavier than what was show in the episode, I went to a public school and there I suffered the physical bullying, to the point of people trying to literally pull my hair from my head... I ran away from it to a particular one and I got the verbal bullying part but in a way bigger scale than the physical one could ever hit.
@@Luke0Maker it's a shame things are like this, it was bad 10 years ago when I was in high school, now it's worse, and I feel it will continue to get worse... it's very sad. I got bullied a few times, but it wasn't very often. Some colleagues of mine have psychological problems even today, since that time
Japan is the most polite country in the world
Yet their online community is also the same with the rest of the world.
Yeah just check what people comment under Amber and Johnny Dep
As a manga reader, i always still felt emotional rollercoaster each time intense episode came out, and become more attached to the character, the manga itself has one of the best if not the best characters, love them all and the anime is clearly made with love, the Oshi no ko official channel gave lots of behind the scene, interview and choreography if you wanna dance them song and workout for one hour hahaaha
as for Yuki on why she's not doing anything, it is very complicated on her part, because just saying something can result her breaching contract either with her agency or the show and even making things worst like people may say Akane threatening her to say that, because in the end sometimes those type of people just wanted to say bad things to other people who they decide as a villain...
sadly these things are not just fiction.....not just the case this episode based on, but there are more....
This is based on real incident of Hana Kimura. She was professional wrestler. She was victim of cyberbullying. You can search more about her
*SPOILER*
I would like to note: there's a suicide hotline message after the credits roll.
Yea
i didn't see it?
I saw it, I thought it something that streaming platform added at first, so it is actually there huh?
To clarify, and yes I know I am late to the party, this is Dub exclusive
25:38 "Who was that?"
Doesn't matter who specifically, but it was someone who knew of her, was even a fan of her acting from before the dating show, so it stung even more
Unfortunately, there's not a lot Yuki could have said that would have helped Akane in this situation.
It sucks.
24:20
If you're shocked by this level.... You have no idea what to expect from Korean content.....
31:10
Yuki huh.
At the end of this episode they show you the info and contact of the mental healt and suicide help-line
Waiting so much for what Aqua is going to do next.
❤️
"I grew up around bullying"
In person.
Great episode, so interesting and breakhearting of course 😢💔 Akane didn't deserve that for sure.😔
What a shame that they will adapt only 11 episodes bc it is getting better and better.... And man, I love Aqua since the 1st ep but now I think I love him even more. Great character 😌
Last, Queen Bee released today the official MV of "Mephisto" with English lyrics.
I agree! Just breaks your heart how she tried to push through it all 💔
im not someone that cries over shows and this was not the special case either, yet i really appreciated your way of reacting, it shows how deeply you empathized with akane and how honestly interested you were in her feelings. it's great to see someone who really deeply appreciate what this show has to offer
i don't know if this anime has manga or like original anime who did't have manga or ln but i always pay attention to every single detail in every anime that i watch, so the person responsible for the yuki incident is yuki herself, sounds crazy? let me explain,
1. in episode 5 ruby say to aqua that she recommend her(yuki) because she is a nice girl, then aqua said "you are not good at judging people"
2. in this episode 5 yuki say to aqua that she is .... and that was not yuki's fact, she lie, but it become fact if that refer to akane.
3. in this episode what yuki put on Akane's nails (on the index finger to be exact) is glass and it's been proven several times, at 13:30 yuki said she won't let it happen this line is the strong fact that prove that also you can clearly see the glass shining and in 13:36 yuki's evil smirk showed and we can exactly see that it is a glass even yuki took that glass with tweezers because she knows if she took it with her finger, her finger will be injured
4. in this episode at 14:28 we can clearly see that the wound is caused by the glass that yuki put on akane's index finger nail and i think the reason for color changed is to hide it.
Because she can't say "Yuki and I were able to resolve the situation and are on good terms."
Also, regarding bullying, I live in PH and I saw something like this happen in elementary and high school.
29:02
Btw love is war author is the same author who did oshi no ko , its kinda ironic that kaguya for the most part light hearted compare to what he writes in oshi no ko
Wow, the sound and music design of this episode was pretty amazing
Really elevated the tension masterfully
20:13 bullying is pretty bad in japan not sure if the worst but definetly worse than UK
Dont know if you know yet but oshi no ko is from the same author as love is war
As a manga reader, not gonna spoil anything but Akane is best girl in my book.
Not sure if they'll show it within in this season but if they do, y'all will know why. Everyone's in a huge treat.
Poor baby cinnamon bun.. I need to give her a hug QAQ
I just watched this episode and i loved it. And i love your reactions. Glad you enjoy Oshi No Ko a lot too. I love it so much.
it wasn't focused on the anime but in the manga the reason for the cut was actually the accessories Yuki put on her fingers which made it just an unlucky accident
Yuki has the same contract as Akane, they're selling an all-access reality series so they can't publicly admit "We made up while the cameras were off"
Thank u ❤ Finally start one of the best moment best girl akane aqua best couple time ❤
To everyone who watched the Ep: The events of this episode were directly based on a real incident that happened on a Japanese reality show with a young star named Hana Kimura.
Nice tbh ur one of best so far thank you ❤
ur clear way of speech is really good too ngl
24:30
At least here (America), people really says things on that level. It's not something you see every day, but if you look for, you find It, and she's searching for her name in the anime, so it's easier to find this kind of people saying this kind of psychotic things
At the end of the day, people think not showing their names let them do whatever they want to whoever they want
This story about Akane is based off a real life situation. The character she was based on received harassment like this and ended up taking their life as a result. It's happened several times to reality TV stars. Things like this do happen and have happened. People do talk like this on the internet because its behind a screen and doesn't feel real.
The fact that they also included a suicide prevention hotline in the credits...
The fact that he started crying got to me 26:55 (Because I was was also shedding tears-)
I think the Yuki girl didnt speak for Akane's defence because it was in their contract not to talk anything about the behind the scenes of the show.
I was beyond excited for this episode, chapter 25 of the manga is my all-time favourite and seeing it animated was amazing!
Yeah, it's like this. Japanese are absolutely ruthless on the internet. There's probably a couple cases of suicides that happened due to cyberbullying there. People stop thinking about the consequences once they get the protection and anonimity of the internet and can say what they want. And it's not only Japanese in actuality pretty much anyone around the world can be capable of this toxicity online.
the words before the act just hit hard. Then with the dry and cold switch from "a calm mind" to a how loud and rain night it's just brutal.
I dont think people talk like rhat but they definitely do online
**spoiler for this episode***
I believe this scandal was intentional to some extant,
when the other female cast done akane nails she told her that she wont let her steal her light and she held a gem,
latter she applied that gem as prat of Akane nail polish and I think that what made the slap leaving a burse,
it is just my speculation I have no prior knowledge, I might be completely wrong.
also I screamed Aqua please save Akane when she jumped, I have no idea why guess I really wanted someone to save her and Aqua was the safest bet
As rin itoshi from blue lock once said - "Your little sightseeing trip is gonna turn traumatic" (sightseeing referring to watching this anime)
keep in mind one thing before hating on the popular girl, they're under contract so they cannot say anything that is not shown on the show, so she cant defend Akane if her defending Akane is not on the show
In regard to people that were involved that should be jumping into defend, Akane mentioned briefly that their contract stipulates they can't talk about anything that didn't air. So, despite Akane and the other girl burying the hatchet on set, it never made it on the air. That said, I don't see why the other girl couldn't come out and say that maybe they made up after the fact.
she was manipulating her. it was obvious how the one to push Akane to do this was the 'victim herself YUKI
@@YourMommyRed I'm sorry but as a manga reader, this made me laugh
Even if yuki defended akane those people would just say she is being nice. It would make it worse
@@sindhub2045 exactly
@@space6107 no spoiler please🙏
Yes it happens a lot in the world. Like I guess it wasnt that bad for your experience, but Ive known a LOT of people suffering from depression because of bullying... This swarm of hate comments are so true, it teared me up... So many people died because of them..
I don't think people talk like that in actual real life in front of the person, but on the internet...people are awful with their comments, I can't believe how come they have so much hatred inside of them to type things like that
18:36 yeah, I'm sure Yuki knew that the conversation between the two of them would be recorded that's why she acted like that
Here's the thing.
24:21 i think it’s more of an internet thing where the internet provides a level of anonymity so people think they can say whatever they want
Thanks Luke
i had just watched the episode, i was still crying, i opened youtube and here i am... that girl, the last words she said, i've been saying it often, so it hurt, how this episode hurt for me
it was definitely written by someone who has been through something similar
it's so sad but amazing at the same time
how is it possible?
It's common in asian countries. It's too easy too create controversies. It's also very easy to add fuel to this.Being an Asian I feel really sad that there are actually people like this eho tend to bully people online real harsh. 24:35
The reason why Yuki didn’t say anything is kinda explained by Akane herself. They can’t say anything in the public that’s not shown in the show, because they signed a contract.
This happens for a lot of reality TV, the producers can edit and manipulate your reputation however they want, and you don’t have the rights to clarify anything or defend yourself.
This shit got WAY TOO REAL ×_×
I dont remember the last time I felt this lvl of releaf from the MC saving someone.
Again way too real.
The lvl of realism portraing social medid is freaking scary 😵😵💫
How dare they say she's ugly to the cutest girl in the series (in my opinion)
True
