    Rogan, missed it in the podcast when Nims was talking about anapurna. Nims said when he climbed anapurna 3 out of 4 died trying to climb Anapurna. Joe corrected him via Jamie pulling up Google where it says only 32%. Nims said he changed that statistic because 60 people summited since he set the lines in 2019. He didn't catch it that Nims actually made it safer to climb, and Nims just moved on. Wish that would be corrected.

    Nirmal Purja is an inspiration just for being a Gurkha to begin with. In 2018 72 of the top 100 ranked shooters in the British army were from the Gurkha Brigade including the winner. It is just one of many examples of why being a Gurkha is badass. Despite their fearsomeness in battle, most Gurkhas are traditionally very family orientated and will just serve until they retire with a pension. Nirmal joining the SBS, getting invited to join the SAS, and all the crazy death zone mountaineering and record breaking he has been doing, is just a Gurkha from humble beginnings realizing his true potential in the world. He continues to inspire many to realize their true potential as well.

If 50 people climbed up and lived because of him, that means 62/150 died before him, so 41% died before he went up. Those numbers might not be exact, but it wasn't a 75% mortality rate when he first went up.

      You're right. I've been watching Joe from that famous video of Joe talking about float tanks. All the negative press about him has taken its toll and from a human perspective it is a remarkable that he has kept such a great attitude throughout. But you are right. He's not the same Joe.
      I know right now we are at a precipice where honest media may be at extreme danger of dieing but Joe needs a vacation. Hopefully he finds a good reason to continue to be a great source of information and good in the world.

      @@phillies4eva I think Nims may have started to kind of grate on Joe's nerves a bit. I know he did on mine.
      Taking nothing away from what he's accomplished, which is amazing, to me Nims came off quite arrogant, especially during the first part of the interview.
      Like, subtly bragging about drinking, and not sleeping, then climbing, etc.
      He has much to be proud of but I get the sense he might be a hard guy to be around.
      Joe even kind of dug at him at one point, kind of dismissively calling him Superman.
      You have to have humility, and I sensed very little of it from Nims.

    When he did it the ratio was 4 to 3. Then he fix a line and since then 80 people have summited safely therefore the stats change. Duh

    • @gabrielestea6785
      @gabrielestea6785 2 года назад +1

      Well 61 people have died there and if you subtract those 80 from the current 200 it would have been 120 summits and 61 deaths so still not 3/4.

    • @yomo1690
      @yomo1690 2 года назад +2

      @@gabrielestea6785 well maybe his dates are not quite right and statistics can change rapidly over time with only slight differences to the actual number so the ratio may be off depending on when you taking it from and I actually think more than 80 have climbed it since him. And that's the problem with statistics, if next week and avalanche kill 10 climbers in one go, the ratio jumps up again. Either way it has been higher than 34% and its still the most lethal mountain in the planet and he climbed it....... Before climbing 13 others. Ffs.

    Nims helped people summit quite a few mountains that they'd never be able to summit on this journey. K2 is another one specifically, the expedition that was there when Nims arrived was about to quit and said it was impossible to summit that season. Nims fixed the ropes all the way to the summit and most of them summited that season. Basically, he did what Sherpas have been doing for non-Sherpa alpinist since the start. Nims did the difficult and extremely dangerous job of fixing the ropes to the summit, enabling the rest of the climbers to clip into that rope and have a guided line to the summit. I'm not sure if people truly grasp what this guy was able to accomplish, you would need to be a part of the scene to really understand the scale of difficulty and DANGER.
    Even if you do everything perfect, you can still die on these mountains. Avalanches on these types of climbs are essentially russian roulette. Even the ones that have been commercialized like Everest, if you're climbing SW face of Everest, you still need to go through the Khumbu icefall. It doesn't matter how skilled of a climber you are there, if you're in the wrong place that day - you're dead.

    I'm a big fan of this kinda stuff, but I haven't kept up with it for a while. Everyone knows who the best climbers are, they're the folks working on the mountain, the locals. They're not usually trying to break records though, so it's really cool to see what they can accomplish when they have a set goal. But yeah, this subject is always awesome. The stuff they go through, the people that do it, the way they get through it, it's fascinating stuff. Lots of great books out there about it.
