Let me just give a little update on this. I’m totally okay! I recover fairly quickly usually. This video was not meant to seek pity or have anyone feel sorry for me. Just wanted to make a video that was a little more transparent and human is all

I've never posted a comment on RUclips before but as an artist who suffers the terror/stress of creating and the guilt/terror of putting it off I was very moved by this, and in competitive fields there's so often little support to be found
I am kinda curious if you had advice for someone similar (ADHD with anxiety / depression issues) who is keen to put their foot in the door for content creation. I mean, obviously you've got your own content to make. But yeah, I enjoy your videos whilst the small bits you drop in your videos about yourself explains a lot (at least to me) about your process and personality in said videos.
Sounds like you just hit burnout, unfortunately with a frustrating game that fell way below the mark its predecessors set for you. I recommend taking a vacation far from home and using it to both have fun and reassess whether you want to still be a youtuber. I say this particularly because you’ve been doing this for many years longer than most would stay at their job in other fields. May just be time to do something different.
With that said this is totally a review of the game. I don’t know why you keep saying it isn’t just because you only played 80% rather than the whole thing. Like somehow that last hour being great somehow justifies the 39 hours of pure pain and suffering you went through. This video’s a legit review of the game.

@@MissAshley42 And then, it kidnapped your best friend, put him in an alien spaceship, hooked him up and put him in a crappy, 2D version of the worst moment of his life, but as a 2D beat-'em-up, where he had to keep reliving the worst; most cruel and saddest moment of his life. This game is just sadistic, as well as rude, and cruel to everyone who's played it, and is also a HUGE disappointment and disaster for fans of Mario Golf.

I really do love this game but man some of those story missions and challenges can be real ball busters.
Also, dude. Please don't kill yourself over RUclips videos. I love you and love seeing your content, but not at the expense of your health. Maybe consider doing more relaxed "first impressions" style videos so that way you don't feel pressured to "review" a game in a small timeframe?
Still like the game, but it’s a far cry from the older games. But I definitely see where your coming from. The thing about frustrating or difficult games is that they tend to grow on you whether you like them or not. And I can tell that this happened here,
Honestly, I don't think it's a weird reaction at all, sometimes a disappointment hits you at exactly the wrong time and as a fellow Mario Golf fan, this was a big let down. It's like it was made by people who hate fun.

Ok so spoilers:
So suddenly a lightning god gives you lightning powers and you face off in a boss fight to like, prove your worth or something. You’re then told about how the Snow King has taken over Bowser’s Castle and now you have to go defeat him by fighting a fire bird and gaining fire power. You then team up with Wario and Waluigi (because treasure) and go through Bowser’s Castle to go and fight the Snow King. Right before you reach him, Mario shows up at the very last minute, gets captured by the Snow King, you fight him, Bowser gets unfrozen, he unthaws all the ice, and that’s the end of the game.
It’s a lot more anticlimactic than it sounds.

I think I would've found it cooler if I wasn't expecting there to be bosses, but Nintendo Treehouse and the overview trailer already spoiled that much so I knew it was coming
Hey Gilly. The struggle is real and I’m sorry for what you had to go through. I’m glad you came out the other side having learned something about your work/life balance. I can totally relate to the drive to finish something you’ve started, as well as the depression spiral that comes with not getting it done. Glad to hear you’re doing okay! And for what it’s worth, this video did more to inform me about this game than a “normal” review would have.
Bro, anything golf related is infuriating in general, there were people hired specifically for finding clubs that were thrown into the lake when it was first created, I think.

First off, I'm glad that you're okay. No game is worth the stress that this game gave you. If something like this ever happens again, please, just think to yourself that you don't have to do it, and then just walk away. No game is worth this much turmoil.
Second, you and thelonelygoomba are the very reason why I will never pick this game up. You guys saved me 60 bucks. Not only is this one of the most tedious games in the series just for the sake of being unique but the characters are so irrigating to me, and I've played banjo kazooie. That game's dialogue was fun because it was soft on your ears, and it was something unique.
This game, donkey Kong looks like he's made out of chocolate, everybody has to have an annoying high pitched shriek as a response, and I'm going to say it like it is, there's a reason why the other Mario golfs didn't have you running over the field. Because that's fucking boring! I'd rather just get to the next shot.
These games man, I used to be excited for Mario sports titles. Now I can't even be slightly happy for one. And it's nobody's fault but nintendo's.

this game was very disappointing, i loved the gamecube game and the gba one but recently the series has dropped in quality the 3ds game is ok but its no toadstool tour. and this, its just underwhelming. i dont know if its worth it even with the extra free content coming.

I think the 3DS game's only issue was the bland presentation. The gameplay was as good as it ever was in the series.
@@MissAshley42 3DS version is where Camelot/Nintendo started to cut corners and it continued to this game. World Tour was the first to remove highlights, Doubles, etc.
@@MissAshley42 its a good game not knocking that, but going back to it you can see the signs that lead to super rush being underwhelming, world tour was the better game though with stuff to do. if their focus is just the core gameplay why not just go for an arcade style experience with lots of modes and no adventure mode or anything like that. use toadstool tour as a base to build off or world tour.
I stopped playing once the “Cross Country Golf” garbage came up in Adventure Mode. I was already unimpressed with so much of the game, from the RNG-infused accuracy to the dumb spin systems to the poor putting. Adding foolish gimmicks on top of a severely flawed golf game only makes matters worse.
Speed Rush is *easily* the worst Mario Golf game to date and might be Camelot’s worst sports game to date- even the content-lacking Mario Tennis games for 3DS and Wii U at least got the basics right. This one doesn’t. At all.
It sucks that the game frustrated you as it did. FWIW, something good did come out of that- your viewpoint here is valid and serves as a warning for those thinking about buying the game.
Eh...that's just mostly a skill issue than a game issu with XC Golf.
It's almost as if Nintendo's phoning in the Mario games now and the recent "good" games with the red plumber are French and have him faffing about with proto-Minions.

Kinda reminds me how I remember being so disappointed in Star Wars Episode 2 on the GBA when it came out, I dubbed it the worst game I ever owned. Literally it has to be played to be believe on how bad it is (i.e. AWFUL controls, unfair enemy AI, the most confusing backgrounds that looked like platforms, etc.) I remember losing my copy sometime later, not really caring to play it again.
But fast forward many years later, I found it while cleaning out my closet, and I felt like I discovered lost treasure. There was something oddly satisfying about recovering the game and placing it with the rest of my GBA games due to how bad it was.

As somebody who has been lucky enough to work for myself, and see a business I've been working on for almost ten years finally start to take off, and STILL has extreme anxiety and depression when it comes to trying to offer the best services possible, I totally feel this. If you don't experience this sort of thing at least once as an independent creative, then I would tend to doubt how much you really value your own work.

I agree. Sorry you had to put yourself through a depressing golf game, and that Mario Golf not only disappointed people, but broke you and your usual outstanding videos, Gilly. You deserved better. And Mario Golf is just baffling. Honestly, I really was on the fence about this game but after thinking about it and also listening specifically to TheLonelyGoomba and... _you_ , I don't think I'm gonna pick up the game even when it gets its updates and becomes a "complete" game.
I probably wouldn't have gotten a mental breakdown but I definitely would have felt deep depression by the end of it. Even for me not being a reviewer but just as a fan of the franchise since the N64

EDIT: I dunno if you played Mario Golf World Tour on the 3Ds but from what I know... Besides the lack of a traditional RPG in lie of the GBC and GBA days, it seems to be the overall better experience across the board.
I suffer with anxiety/depression also. I relate to this video strongly. Games are my main means of escape, but they can also be an investment. I felt exhausted trying to find pleasure in this clearly half-hearted cash grab before deciding it wasn’t worth it.
Wow, sorry about that dude. I didn't have a lot of fun with this one either and knew this would be the case after the way Aces turned out but dang. Btw, I'm surprised you haven't played Toadstool Tour considering that's what people consider to be the best in the series, although I personally think World Tour on the 3DS is the best (and very underrated).
World Tour on the 3DS had a lot of Personality that Super Rush lacks...

glad you made this video Gilly. Wanted to make my own review of this game because I believed it to be such an unenjoyable experience. But I can't even get myself to open the game now lmao. Appreciate you bringing up the Sum Cost fallicy in the way you did!
For additional context: The Cross-Country Golf portion of the campaign is only _the second area._ Right off the bat, the game expects you to not only hastily pop the ball all around different elevations but to do so _without a flight path for the ball._ The game provides less shot info than its predecessors, so it's easy to wind up either failing to clear mountains or hitting trees that you didn't expect.
And to top it all off, only _after_ this portion where you need to pop the ball high do you get access to lob shots. Let me repeat that: the game only gives you the tools effectively clear an area _after_ you've left the area. This is just one of many baffling design decisions in this game. I want to love it, and under some circumstances, I can still see myself doing so. Playing it alone, though, and especially playing the story mode, is just a bummer.
You don't need a flight path for this part. One thing people who complained about this part likely failed to realize how the tornadoes work. They convert forward momentum into loft, so you're not supposed to be very close to them and use a wedge to go over the cliff (which I did at first then immediately changed to the correct way). You're supposed to be a good amount of distance away (maybe 50 yards), then use an iron or driver to reach your intended location and yes, it will land where you aim on the distance marker. So if you can aim for the pin, do that.
It's a real shame you went through this. At least you can put it behind you now and move on to better things!
i always thought that there could be nothing bad about getting to review video games for a living .. but i really didn’t think about the fact that a lot of the job is playing games that frustrate u and make u anxious.. when u have mental health issues i’m sure that can be really taxing

Seeing the Game Grumps play it never gave me any indication that it was anything but at least a competent Mario game. I'm glad you pulled through, and I hope you're still OK. I feel ya. Also needed to get over my workaholic side and accept that breaks are ok. Even doing a vid on a game I enjoy a lot gets me stressed about the process of working thru it or redoing parts I'm unsatisfied with for several days and weeks.

Maybe with upcoming games, instead of trying to do a review you can always just do a first impressions video up to where you are/last played the game, that way you don't pressure yourself into finishing the game if you don't like it, but still can put out content and give your opinion on whatever game it is!

Dude, I know how you feel... I just spent five days working in a warehouse, taking down and replacing shelves, and my colleague and I (the only two people out of, I dunno, seven to stay until work was done) are absolutely finished. Because, well, we started the whole thing so we're gonna complete it, right?
I'm on sick leave now, because I couldn't keep down breakfast, much less work for eight hours. Don't make yourself sick with work, it's definitely not worth it. I'm glad you managed to stop before you felt even worse, and it's even better to read in the comments that you're getting better. It's great to see a RUclipsr's human side, but not at that great a cost.
I was excited for this game. I saw that it was trash and lacked content so I bought the 3DS game and the DLC instead. Saved myself $15.
i speak for myself i cant speak for everyone else but i never expect you or any youtuber to make videos at a set time and date its nice when there is a new video like today as of writing this comment i had a piss pore ride home from work a good day at work which is 1 hour drive from my home but today it took me 3 hours due to major traffic i was super pissed my head hurts my eyes are dry and they hurt but watching your video helped me relax so thank you. but my point is if you need to take time even if its 2 years or more i dont mind i would rather you and all other youtubers be happy and healthy then to sick stressed and unhappy a lot people forget youtubers are making stuff for all of us viewers to watch youtubers have control over what they make so its only fair that you guys get to take time for yourselves. ive been a subscriber for many years to your channel in fact ive stopped subscribing to many channels over the years but yours ive stayed with i like your old and new stuff a lot of your stuff makes me laugh or just helps me relax and chill so thank you.
I feel that the Mario spin-off titles has been really going downhill lately, with Mario Kart having Mario Kart Tour, Tennis having Aces, the RPGs having Origami King & now Golf having Super Rush. At the very least Mario Party seems to be heading in a step in a right direction with Mario Party: Superstars, with that game fixing most of the issues that Super Mario Party had.
After Mario Party Superstars was announced, I was like "This is tough... Do I get Super Rush or SuperSTARS?" and... I think Superstars is the right choice for me. Because even at its absolute worst, it's a remake of Classic Mario Party and I'll enjoy it more as a video game.

By the way, Mario Kart Tour isn’t even a main Mario Kart title, it is a mobile game spinoff, so its kinda shady to use THAT as evidence that Mario Kart has gone downhill.

I definitely get the pressure that comes with feeling like you HAVE to do a video, but yeah, it's not worth it. It's why I'm NEVER going to release a video on Bloody Roar 3. There's ALWAYS something else that can be discussed if you feel like you have to put content out.
There’s a learning curve but I found it fairly straightforward. It does get frustrating yea but I don’t feel like I want to stop playing. I mean golf is just frustrating in general haha . It could use some more courses and game modes but I enjoy passing the time with this game. The story mode with your mii is a real grind but I do play other modes to take a break from the slog.

don't beat yourself up Gil. it's an age old tradition to not finish a game before reviewing it. just do your best, bud. I get those feelings with my projects sometimes too. it sucks. so i totally get where you're coming from.
Keep in mind that this game was realeased with very minimal content and got 3 pathetic free updates that were drip feed over a period of... 6 months.

Man I honestly can't blame you. As a fan of the old Mario Golf games ( GBC was my first ) I was really looking forward to this game myself.
But I also tempered my expectations since Mario Tennis Aces wasn't what I hoped it would be, and I went into this game knowing how shallow it was.
But the story mode was definitely something I could take or leave. The character voices were obnoxious, and it just didn't feel like Camelot put much effort into it.
The old Gameboy Color entry actually made me feel like I was apart of the world with characters who were there to play golf.
Also the only thing you get for playing through Golf Adventure is to be able to play as your mii in Battle Golf. You could ignore Golf Adventure entirely and just unlock the 6 bland courses by doing 18 holes in normal golf or with friends if you wanted.
It all feels like a shallow game that wastes your time. Unless you have friends to enjoy this game with, you'd be better off playing another golf game like Golf Story.
At least that's how I felt.
I really wished they could have used the human designs from the Early Mario golf and tennis games for the humans in Mario odyssey

I like the game. Yeah, speed golf isnt fun and i just gave up on adventure mode, but playing standard golf online is a blast and the battle golf is quite fun. Id say the game isnt worth 60$ tho
Sorry to hear the game caused you to have such a negative reaction. I can’t imagine how hard that would be. Personally I played the game and had a good time with it but I can see how it would cause a bad reaction. Even though the adventure mode is like a tutorial, it definitely doesn’t explain a lot of what to do. The cross country mode was very strange and weird they had that and only used it once.
Is the motion controls required to use or can you skip it? That's why I returned Mario party. Nintendo really needs to pull away from that or at least make it an option and not a requirement. Not everyone likes motion controls
Motion controls are completely optional and do not appear in the Adventure Mode.

Buckle up, I've got some thoughts.
First off, I completely understand. 😂 This game is unlike the 64 and even the GameCube when it comes to lining up shots and control of the ball. It also has no focus in the adventure mode which let's be honest should be just be a training course.
I saw a few misplays in your shot lineup though when it came to your second or third shots approaching the ⛳.
When you're JUST off the fairway, just put the ball. Don't attempt to lob it. IT L.WILL.NEVER.ACT.RIGHT.
Maybe someone that's played 200+ hours can eventually figure it out and get it to be perfect but just rule of thumb in those cases, approach by putting (again, while next to fairway.
I had to take this game in parts and luckily I have a son so breaks are often so the tornado only frustrated me for a day until my dumbass figured out that the ball could go into it as well. The problem here is that they could've let us lob the ball and made that lesson sooner to remedy MUCH of the problem in that set.
I hope some of that helps but I get the anger. I waited for this game too and I told my fiance I'll wait for a bday gift for this.
I had some fun but the loose ties to it being a Mario game, (Mario reference hardly and the only ones you interact with are Wario and Waluigi. Like wtf) the pop in from assets in the distance worse off than BOTW, character models looking jagged and unpolished (DK most of all), lack of order for training to understand mechanics before running qualifiers, make this a chugging, frustrating, mess to get through.
Fun with friends sure but even then, I like playing solo and this story mode needed more baking in the oven.

I absolutely love Toadstool Tour, so I was really excited for this game. And I've been having a good time with it! I played Adventure mode for not even an hour, and I was bored out of my mind. But the regular (not speed) golf mode is a lot of fun, especially with friends! Adventure mode and speed golf play like trash in my opinion, but the reg mode is pretty chill for a basic golf game. Plus the fun outfits haha
It's so not as good as the Gamecube one or the Gameboy/Advance games, but I think there's some fun to be had in this game! Glad I'm not a RUclipsr though 😬

This really hurts, man. I'm not gonna say I'm the biggest Mario Golf fan but I was a bit excited. Speed Golf looked like fun hectic golf with a Mario twist. That other mode sounds horrendous. As for your mental issues, that sounds awful. I've recently with been dealing with anxiety/depression in the last year. I had multiple breakdowns, but that was because of school, family issues, and other things. I guess the point I'm trying to make is that I somewhat understand the feeling and am truly sorry.
As hard as the game is the first time around, (and trust me, I nearly gave up multiple times during my first play through) the second time around was brutally easy. All I did on the second run was upgrade only power. Once I reached level 100, I was at power 360. The game was sooooo easy the second time. No losses or grinding needed. This made XC golf SOOOOO much easier.
Not sure if you figured it out already, or even have any interest to play this game again, but you don't have to dash in the speed golf. You can do a normal run. The dash is just meant for a quick burst of speed not your main mode of traversal.
Hey big fan, but bro I think you would've enjoyed the game way more if you would compensate for the break on greens when you're putting! Those little dots going left or right tell you which way the putt is going to break
I’m surprised that Mario Golf Super Rush gave you more stress than Balan WonderWorld.
I actually had a similar feeling about a year ago with a game that was super breezy for 99% of it until it took a sharp right on Asshole Blvd on the very final stage/boss. I tried for hours to finish it and couldn't get it thanks to shitty AI and a vicious difficulty spike until I had to step away. I booted the game up the next day and felt real, actual anxiety as I heard the disc whirr. I finally said, "What the fuck am I doing to myself? This is supposed to be fun." And I called it a day on the game right there and then and never went back. I'm not even a content creator with a deadline, just a guy who gets weird anxiety sometimes about games.
Anyway, feels wrong to not give you a like and comment considering you nearly broke your soul playing this. Feel better, Gilly.
What was the game?
Here's an idea for the next Mario sports game: Mario Sports GameCube Pack. Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour, Mario Power Tennis, Mario Superstar Baseball, and Super Mario Strikers. All with updated graphics and possibly higher framerates if they didn't run at 60 FPS in the originals. I'd happily pay $60, possibly more, for something like that.

It's alright, man. Guess this game is the type of game that wasn't right for you at the time. And from the looks of it, this might not be a game I would look forward to either seeing how drawn out it looks.
I'm glad i watched this so i don't waste $60 on it. I did kinda wanna get it because it gives off the vibes of golf on the wii but I guess the mii is the only part that's similar. at least your suffering has saved people money and time lol.

This game was just a disappointment in general tbh, like it isn’t terrible but it really shouldn’t have been released in the state it was in. But yeah I can understand the frustration you went through for this game. Trying to beat games within a deadline that have parts where one attempt takes hours or else you start all over again, it suuuucks.
For what it's worth, this video has given me valuable insight into how rough the game actually is, and now my expectations for if/when I do get the game are much more tempered. I had heard people say it's bad, but that was only in regards to "lacking content" or "feeling rushed (pun intended)." I hadn't heard anyone actually outline the issues they experienced. I hope this helps you feel less like your time was wasted on this game!
You come across as blaming yourself a bit for getting stress from this game, but honestly this game frustrated and annoyed me nonstop too. I have only played this game for my own enjoyment, there was no pressure, yet I'm constantly frustrated too. I can't even finish the adventure mode, because it's just awfully bad.
