This review is really great and in-depth! What gauge strings have you used? I’ve been considering buying the Troy Signature model but have heard that the spring in the trem-system on JMs generally doesn’t function smoothly with heavier gauge strings - 10s or 11s, and usually needs a real good setup. Fender ships out all JMs from the Troy signature to the American Pro II, with a 9-gauge set. Are Jazzmasters built to perform best only with 9’s on them? Does the trem-system on the Copper Age JM have difficulty with heavier gauges or does it work smoothly? Do heavier gauges make them go off tune? Would love some clarity! Thank you!
Thank you! Up to this point I’ve only gone as heavy as .10-.46. I use up to .13-.56 on other guitars but with this Jazzmaster handling the low tunings as well as it did in this video with stock strings I’ve never seen a reason to go heavier. I bounce between C# and D standard with the .10-46 and haven’t had any setup issues beyond adjusting bridge height. Still haven’t even adjusted the truss rod. Crazy how stable it is!
Thank you! The Vintera one did get my attention when it was released, but it was a combination of the aesthetics and sentiment that made me go for this one. I love the color, I love block inlays, and it helps that I’m a Troy fan too. So I had to go for it! I’d always figured I’d get a Jazzmaster some day, but I wanted a Fiesta Red one specifically. Until the Noventa model, the Custom Shop was the only Fiesta Red choice 😬 so I wasn’t ready to commit to that. But when I saw Troy post the reveal video for this one I finally pulled the trigger on one and I’m glad I did. Otherwise I never would’ve realized how comfortable the 7.5” radius is! That toggle for the circuit switch is super convenient too - makes it very easy to utilize the two circuits on the fly. Thanks for watching!
More playable out of the box than any other guitar I've ever had! One came from the retailer perfectly set up, on the other I did eventually have to raise the action just a hair (not because of fret buzz, but because with the radius, if it's too low, whole step bends above the 15th fret will fret out). Other than than that and adjusting intonation for the weirder tunings, I didn't and haven't changed a single thing. In fact, I haven't even changed the strings yet. Thanks for watching!
Hey Rhys! This video isn’t sponsored in any way. I wasn’t incentivized with the guitars by Fender or a retailer in exchange for a review - not even affiliate links or ad revenue. As such, I’m slow on rolling out videos compared to the big channels but I’m trying to keep uploading at least every month or two. Thanks for your comment and your time!
Thanks Sunny, that's really good to know. Seriously thinking about pulling the trigger on one of these and yours is the only non sponsored review I could find. It's quite pricey for a Mexican, so you need someone honest to identify any "cons", but your video seems not to find any. Thanks Rhys.
Well I liked the first one so much that I immediately wanted to grab a second for an alternate tuning and to keep away from home. I was gonna get the Oxblood version but Sweetwater had a demo version come up for sale so I bought that instead and saved $100 😁
Hey there, thanks, enjoyed this detailed review of a beautiful guitar! At the moment I'm thinking of buying one. My only doubt is that it could be too bright due to the maple fretboard (normally I would take the oxblood one but the copper is just so darn pretty). Would you say that this guitar is bright above average or so versatile that i shouldn't second guess? I have a history of owning "cheaper" MIM JMs which I always found a bit on the trebly side (even harsh), but maybe these Pure Vintage Pickups are so sweet that you can take away some of the doubt? Also, I didn't use the tone pots in the past to their full potential...
Maple will be a tiny bit brighter than rosewood, but the pickups make most of the tone work. MiM pickups are hotter pickups than the 65. Not sure which has more treble though, but you can play with pickup heights and your tone knob if you need to roll off some of that treble :-) Pick the color you like the most and just rock !
@@JeanThomasdeVoghel thanks for your suggestion, that was helpful. anyway, I just turned down an AVRI 65 offer to go for the Johnny Marr jag instead ;-)
Oh I’m sorry I missed this comment :( I respond to every one but somehow I missed this. Personally, I don’t find this too bright, but I say that having played very bright Tele and strat style guitars. I see you went for the Johnny Marr jag instead - hope you’re enjoying it!
Very nice review. I have the oxblood one and been debating if I should let it go to get a Jackson guitar that could easily hadle some metal tones. What do you think of this debate honestly? Could this guitar, our TVL handle that just fine? Thanks for the input and hope to hear your thoughts soon!
By the time you add that level of distortion it for metal tones it saturates the sound so much it nearly gets to the point where it shouldn't make a great deal of difference other than more clarity from the lower output pickups. I'm guessing the Jackson will have hotter humbuckers so it will give you a warmer tone with a bit more sustain...but as mentioned before, by the time you add that much distortion to the channel I doubt sustain will be much of an issue. If you want more clarity stick with the jazzmaster, you can always roll off the tone for the warmer sound. If you want to be doing crazy sweeping and lead work, then consider the Jackson. Personally, I'd have the Jazzmaster but to be honest I'm not in a metal band. I just think the Fender Jazzmaster is more tasteful than Jackson.
Thanks for taking the time to watch! This Jazzmaster is definitely more than capable of handling metal tones, but the ease with which it does depends on your signal chain. If you’ve got a modeler or a modern metal amp (or a modern distortion pedal like a 5150, Apex Preamp, BE-OD, etc.) it’ll be just as easy as working with the types of humbuckers in most Jacksons. If you play thru something like say a Marshall, you’d need an overdrive pedal to get you to a saturated modern metal tone though. I play a lot of metal and I’ve been using my TVL Jazzmaster for all of it. From writing my own material to playing along to Lamb of God & Deftones, whether I’m playing thru Fractal or Helix or a small combo with a 5150 pedal, I haven’t had a single moment where I wish it had more gain. There’s been times where I’ve thought it’s too bright, so I roll back on the tone control and lose the brightness while maintaining all the clarity. It reminds me a lot of my old Bare Knuckle humbuckers actually. A bigger concern than the pickups would be the fretboard radius. Yngwie uses boards with anywhere from 7” to 9.5” for his shredding, but some shredders are glued to flat radius boards like the 16”-20” ones you can find on Jackson’s, and I can understand that. I’m not much of a shredder, but I haven’t found the radius to be an issue for the lead work I do. Hope my thoughts helped you out a bit. Thanks again for watching!
If I were playing math rock, I don't think this would be the best choice. It's my favorite guitar, but I can see the radius not lending to the best experience when it comes to intricate tapping runs. Granted that depends on your skills as a player (I'm terrible at tapping!) and your preferred gauge/action. I can see it being possible, but I think something with a 12' radius would be a better choice.
CME Exclusive looks like a great option!!! It’s got the same pickups as this and a 4 ways switch with a boost option! Plus CME Exclusive player series jazzmaster has two really cool finishes she’ll pink with white headstock and 3 color sunburst with black headstock!
I just got one. Love it, but I found the D string doesn't ring and feels a bit dead. The action was also very high when I got it. Did you shim it? Overall very happy with it.
Congrats! I’m glad you’re happy with it it’s such a great guitar. I haven’t shimmed mine but my experience was actually that the action was too low on one so I had to raise it 1mm. With that D string, can you tell where the notes muted? Is it an issue with the saddle or just needing some fresh strings?
@@sunnyhaair That's interesting, I definitely feel like it could benefit from a shim. I've 1 and .5 degree shims on the way, so that'll be a fun experiment. I'm thinking the D string issue may be the nut, the saddles look fine. The strings are new. As soon as I got it I restrung it and did a setup. I've been raising the action to see if that helps but hasn't made much difference. Overall though it's an excellent guitar. I debated getting one for a long time and wish I had have got it sooner.
@@sunnyhaair The shims arrived from stewmac. I took the neck off and it was already shimmed! There was pretty beaten up stewmac 0.5 shim already in there. Have fender mexico started shimming these?
I used my HX Stomp here and for that patch I’ve got: Tremolo > US Small Tweed > Cosmos Echo (Roland Space Echo model) > Plateaux Reverb > Ganymede Reverb for the clean playing. I was varying the tone knob and doing volume swells to adjust the attack of the notes. For the overdriven part after that it’s: Tremolo > Triangle Fuzz >US Small Tweed > Cosmos Echo (Roland Space Echo model) If you’re a Helix user let me know and I’d be happy to send over the patch. Thanks for watching!
After knowing what I know about this guitar and having two, I’d pay double what it costs just for one. Its great! And It’s become my favorite guitar. But I can totally understand the reservation. For what it’s worth though, in my opinion, the mid to high-end Mexican made Fenders I’ve had in the last 8 or 9 years have been indistinguishable from the Japanese & American made ones I’ve had. The only thing that’s ever set them apart is the initial out of the box setup. Actually a testament to the similarities that comes to mind is when Jim Root mentioned he was ironing out production details for his recent signature model. He said his Fender rep asked “Well, do you want em built in California by Mexicans or in Mexico by Mexicans?” He went with Mexico, plays em onstage and has been happy with that choice.
The guitar is the national instrument of Mexico, they’re very good at building them. I’d gladly finance their craft, also I think they’re different, not inferior just because of price point
Genuinely because I liked the first one so much! I was logged in to get the Oxblood version and I noticed a demo version of the Copper Age available so I just bought that. I use a few wildly different tunings and gauges and I sometimes keep a duplicate guitar setup away from home. In the past I used to buy two of everything. And even had a few triplets in the mix.

@@sunnyhaair I became obsessed, in an unhealthy way, with getting the ATF tone. Finally succeeded, but it was on accident lol.
I do not need any more guitars. I have a ridiculous collection. I always say that’s the last one I’ll buy. Now I think I need this.
My apologies 😅 if you buy it though, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed!
@@sunnyhaair I know I won’t be. But trying to explain to my wife that I need a 19th guitar or whatever I’m up to… it’s a challenge.
do you think this would work for math rock ??
If I were playing math rock, I don't think this would be the best choice. It's my favorite guitar, but I can see the radius not lending to the best experience when it comes to intricate tapping runs. Granted that depends on your skills as a player (I'm terrible at tapping!) and your preferred gauge/action. I can see it being possible, but I think something with a 12' radius would be a better choice.
@@sunnyhaair thank u
I need a guitar like that I can play from hardcore/beatdown type of chugging/play to something more light in an instant. I need one now 😔
A Jazzmaster is the guitar to do it! I didn’t expect this to be as versatile as it is.
CME Exclusive looks like a great option!!! It’s got the same pickups as this and a 4 ways switch with a boost option! Plus CME Exclusive player series jazzmaster has two really cool finishes she’ll pink with white headstock and 3 color sunburst with black headstock!
great video
Thanks for taking the time to watch and say that!
How did you get those 'atmospheric' effects?
pretty sure that’s some chorus + reverb pedal! i might be wrong
I used my HX Stomp here and for that patch I’ve got:
Tremolo > US Small Tweed > Cosmos Echo (Roland Space Echo model) > Plateaux Reverb > Ganymede Reverb for the clean playing. I was varying the tone knob and doing volume swells to adjust the attack of the notes.
For the overdriven part after that it’s:
Tremolo > Triangle Fuzz >US Small Tweed > Cosmos Echo (Roland Space Echo model)
If you’re a Helix user let me know and I’d be happy to send over the patch.
Thanks for watching!
@@sunnyhaair that sounds awesome man.
You mind sending over the patches? Would love to play them. Great video!
You sound identical to the guy from regular car reviews lmao
Haha, I'll have to go check that channel out!
I love this guitar but at almost $1400 for a mexican made Fender is kindq crazy... Still debating on one though.
I agree completely
$1100 used with case.
AVRI trem, Vintage 65 pups, B&B neck (rosewood if lucky) and case makes this a frealin deal compared to Classic Vibe and modding
This Jazzmaster made in USA?
This one’s actually made in Mexico 🇲🇽
Why 2?
Genuinely because I liked the first one so much! I was logged in to get the Oxblood version and I noticed a demo version of the Copper Age available so I just bought that. I use a few wildly different tunings and gauges and I sometimes keep a duplicate guitar setup away from home.
In the past I used to buy two of everything. And even had a few triplets in the mix.
Thanks for watching!
you got two identical guitars?🫡
😅 After a few months I let one go though. It’s versatile enough I didn’t need to have another for drastically different tunings
