    I know this video is a year ago but I’m gonna comment anywaysss. I absolutely love you as a horse person, rider and you tuber. You present your opinions so well and always justify yourself while always making sure you’re doing the best for you horse. One thing alot of people don’t understand is that every horse is an individual and has different needs. However, dun dun dunnnnnn, my pony was bought at 14. I’m not personally capable of completely reschooling her and fixing all the mistakes other people has made. I have rode her in a loose ring French link snaffle, hackamore, D ring single joint, dutch gag, loose ring rubber straight bar and many more bits to see which she is most comfortable in. I had always been opposed to riding in a pelham as I personally didn’t think I was capable of not making a mistake that would affect her or cause her discomfort. As soon as I tried the straight rubber pelham she was a different horse. No more rearing, her worst habit, and yes she was checked for everything it was just an attitude problem. No more falling behind the bit. Her transitions were smooth and supple. She no longer had a false outline and started coming underneath herself to round her back. So I believe that every horse and rider is different, we all need a little support in the things we lack. You carry on doing you darlin xxx

    I have a greenish of track thoroughbred and she's my first horse. I started riding a year ago and have riden a heap of different horses and have been in more severe/confronting situations then a lot of beginners. With having my mare I have to work 10x harder to be a good rider and horseman in order for us to be a great team. I am very fit very well capable of holding a two seat. It doesn't matter how high I jump because I don't jump that high I know. She is honestly the most down to earth animal I've ever met she has never put a foot wrong and when she spooks I can handle it very well (she rarely does spook) I just wanted to say that it is extremely stupid for someone to get a green or unbroken horse to learn with. But I am so very great full that my situation has worked out well and I feel myself becoming a better rider and horse owner everyday and I feel my horse maturing and become a great version of herself. My trainer actually recomended me to buy her because she is so quiet and amazing ahh I love her to bits hahaha just wanted to say that it does happen sometimes that it does work out well with young horses and riders xx

    I was 12 and I trained my own horse from scratch, as young as I was I had 8 years if experience behind me. I totally 1000001% agree with everything you said. But I do think age doesn’t matter it’s more to do with experience and not age. To this day people doubt me so much because I’m so much younger then them. Seriously love how much you love your horses, and their comfort.

    my story about pain vs behavioral problems: the horse i ride suddenly started kicking, biting, etc. when grooming and tacking up. we found sensitive/swollen areas(most likely from being kicked) that caused the problem and also started him on ulcer medication after he didnt improve when the injury went away. the ulcer medication did nothing, so we had the vet check him out and the blood results came back with no signs of ulcers, and that the issue, at least at this point, was all behavioral. we made a hundred percent sure that it was nothing health related, and are now working on correcting this behavior. although it took a lot of extra work to make sure that he was not in pain, im so glad we made sure that he is healthy and that we didnt assume that it was just behavioral.

    I have to tell you what, your opinion on overweight riders is not at all extreme and very understandable. Recently I wanted to get back into riding, and I took my own weight and fitness into account as I was sitting at around 200lbs. I went to yoga everyday and started to monitor what I ate and I lost 20lbs. Seeing as that's still not 120, I have faced a lot of judgement for my weight but I always strive to keep my horse first, and always keep him comfortable! I was not at all offended, and I definitely see that you're right about the fitness aspect of riding!

    Jill. Your veiw of overweight riders is completely fair!! In Australia I'm classified as an overweight rider (Im 5'4 and 85kg) and I was in no way offended. My only issue was (at this point in time I did not have my own horse) trying to get lessons while riding Warmbloods and having weight restrictions put on. I know girls who are brilliant riders that are over 5'10 and are my weight with SOO MUCH better strength than me but were still restricted in who and what horses they can ride. All of the horses we are looking to ride are over the 15.5 hand mark.
    And your other comment on tack being harmful only if you make it harmful is SOOOOOO TRUE! Preach girl!!

  • @matilda4119

    Thank you Jill! These two controversial videos have been so interesting and I agree with you on so many things. For me personally is nice to hear the similarities and differences from equestrians all over the world. You talk very important topics and it is important to also bring them up. There are for sure some "younger" followers of yours that may not be interested in 10+ minutes of you talking, even though it would be so good for them to listen these things so they could learn to be better to their horses. I personally ride in a riding school and I'm in a extremely lucky place to be allowed to compete with the schools horses. Sadly I don't have that much to say to their tack, which is a shame, cause there would be so many things I would do differently. Once again thank you and good luck for you and Zoe, it's so interesting to see you get better and better! + greetings from Finland! ☺️

    I'm an overweight rider (working on it!) and I have to say I was nervous when you first started talking, but your opinion makes perfect sense and has good reason behind it. I have a 15.2hh athletic quarter horse and I am 3lb away from the 20% rule without tack, but my saddle weighs less than 5lb. Until I am well under that, I am not risking it that I am hurting him in any way, so we're sticking to walk/trot. I have a good seat so I don't flop around which certainly helps. It's common sense. Good news is that I am almost 20lb down, hoping to get down more than that as time goes on. Bad news is that I joined the groundhog club yet again because the dummy felt the cool air here up in New England. Everything hurts. Oof.

    I agree sometimes having a green horse can be one of the most amazing things to happen to someone. I was riding everyday for about six months at a course here in New Zealand, I started on a school master quarter horse called Maisey and then two standard bred mares called Mishka (taught me to use my leg) and Febe (two point) , but I always hated jumping.
    I did it but honestly with chronic anxiety, in hindsight probably wasn't the best boost to my confidence. In the last term I asked to be challenged; so they stuck me on a 14H appy called Benji, who had bucked my friend off and broke three of her fingers.
    I was petrified.
    But he taught me more than those school masters put together.
    It was because of him I got to ride an grazers arab called Anarion, who inspired my love for foward moving, green horses. He had never had a proper schooling day in his life and the first time I had him in a big arena with horses all around him, I was able to get a beautiful trot out of him and a non rushed canter, I was so happy I cried. It was because I rode horses that were considered green that I felt like i had something to offer the equestrian world.
    So I brought a OTTB called Bobby (even though I had been riding for only a year), he was still classed as green having been off the track for a year and six months and only really used to hack out.
    I got to canter him once before his untimely death, but it was something I would never forget.
    I now have a 7 year old 16H blingy bay TB with some more experience called Monty. Who lives up to his name (cheeky git); he competed up to pre novice in eventing but due to neglect his hooves had massive cracks in them.
    Since keeping him barefoot and hanging out with him in the paddock and brushing him and loving him.(because mud is everywhere in NZ in winter) he's become one of the sweetest horses I have ever met and we are looking to get into endurance. You are an absolute inspiration to me, with all that you do and I am so thankful that I can sit back and watch your videos because you have taught me so much.
    I'm currently riding Monty in a snaffle bit; but became very nervous when I heard the one I had might be cruel (single jointed). You really put me at easy, so thank you so much.
    The Chronic Anxiety and Chronic Depression make it so hard for me to believe I am doing things right admittedly.
    Your fellow Equestrian
    Brisingrize

    I don’t see an issue with breastplates in any circumstance as long as they’re adjusted properly. Even a school horse could take off bucking, and a breastplate may be what saves the saddle from unfortunately slipping back and causing a freak accident. Do I think it can be a bandaid for saddle fit? Yes. But as long as that’s not the case, it’s more of a matter of safety than anything to me

    i personaly have used stud chaines before because i work with heavy draft horses and i do feel it is helpful but like she said its how harsh you make it. normally i only ever use it on horses that are really pushy or wont stop when asked but sometimes some heavy draft horses need it because its all they have ever known. most draft horses are like really big puppy dogs though and i love them. my personal horse is really good most of the time i dont even have to put a halter on him hell just follow me to the barn to get the saddle on.

    I use a breastplate to put my draw reins through so my poney doesn't trip through them and hurt herself, this also allows me to release the draw reins and let her stretch without the risk of her ,again, tripping.

    I had a green horse when I was green as well. Looking back I think it was very dumb but he was green in the fact that he just didn't know his leads or how to jump. My trainer also rode him to make sure he was good before I rode. But I enabled him and now he has a bad habit of biting ughhhh

  • @catbus7824
    @catbus7824 7 лет назад

    i agree with you about green horses and green riders, but in my opinion, if the rider has enough experience and skill, to at least give them a challenge, but not a green horse. I have a, not green, but sort of untrained horse, and as much as it can frustrate me to deal with him, he has taught me so much. :) he is a challenge, and I wouldn't want it any other way! but your right, I do not agree with parents buying their green rider kids green horses, it ends badly for both.

    Research will be lead in September here in the uk for actual scientific back-up that over weight riders will damage the horse.
    Sadly the 20% rule has little to no back up so big riders will still ride too small horses, luckily some official shows will ban the bigger riders (or adults warming up tiny ponies used in children classes haha).

    Raised a good topic upfront however I would of liked a more detailed opinion on the lunging systems. I've seen first hand how they do not work. There is a small period where it "works" and with in a few minutes of the first application the cracks show.. nothing that constantly applies pressure without release will never teach a horse anything.

    • @EmeraldDreams7
      @EmeraldDreams7 7 лет назад

      It does not apply constant pressure. The pressure is applied when the horse lifts its head in the air the decreases as the horse lowers into a frame.

    What are technique boots?

    • @Montanaoequestrian
      @Montanaoequestrian 7 лет назад +5

      Madison Kearns you can get boots that create pressure on certain parts of the leg to get the horse to lift it. For example, there are back boots in jumping that cause pressure on their back legs when it is positioned a certain way and encourages them to open up their hind end more. Personally I think they can be very helpful if you have a sloppy jumper and use them every now and again, but I definitely wouldn't use them everyday or for flatting.

  • @MsDailyGlitter
    @MsDailyGlitter 7 лет назад +36

    I get what you are saying about the weight but then again there are people out there that weight over 250 and they are riding draft crosses and the horses are beyond healthy and these people are doing xc. I know a lot of plus size riders who ride better than many smaller people. There is something for everyone. Weight shouldnt be a problem. And there are professional football players who need to be heavy. if a football player is running 20 mph at you and you weigh 120 he will pummel you. You can ride if you are heavy but you just need to find a horse your size.

    • @JETEquiTheory
      @JETEquiTheory  7 лет назад +24

      I completely agree. If you're fit enough to ride effectively and not bang on the horses back, then you're alright in my book! that goes for any size! I know sooo many tiny riders that have no strength and absolutely butcher their horses backs

      That's closer to my opinion. I am a big rider. I have a big horse. I also work out with a personal trainer twice a week out of the saddle. Weight loss isn't a thing that happens for me, but I can increase fitness. It gets really frustrating when people do choose to make it about weight because that's very rarely the entire picture.

    my horse is older but he is still very headstrong and he doesnt seem to be responding to his bit (single joint snaffle d ring) so i feel like i am just yanking on his mouth throughout the whole course and not getting any effect, so idk if i should get a different bit or not, reccomendations????

      Riley Bowling talk to you instructor about different bits and experiment with bits and find what your horse likes

      I’ve been riding in a corkscrew and he seems to like it and he used to go in a slow twist but he started dragging me around the Arena so I talked to my instructor and she suggested trying a corkscrew. All depends on the horse

    Can you do a video on your opinion on Aqha and western pleasure?

    Soo, if a really tall person weighs 200 pounds and is fit it's fine but if a 200 pound short person rides its not okay? That's the kind of vibe I'm getting.

      not my intent. weight should be considered relative to the horses size & amount of conditioning, stamina, and strength training the rider has in order to effectively communicate with the horse, minimizing "noise" and confusion

    I'm 14 but I've been riding my entire life (got my first pony when I was three) and I recently got my appendix quarter horse. He's almost three and quite green but I have my mum to help me who's had youngsters before and knows what she's doing. I read a lot about horses and my first pony was (to put it simply) A FRICKIN PSYCHO OMG but yeah do you think I'm too young? Roo (my three year old) is coming along lovely and I haven't found anything with him that I can't handle. I think because I've been riding for so long that I'm capable but yeah what do you think? K thanks ly xx

    I agreed allot except for when you contradicted yourself with stud chains, you say just train without fear don't take short cuts. Stud chains are a pain training tool, if you decide to use it your inflicting pain. Why do you think Zoe goes airborne? Using chains makes it obvious you don't know how to gain respect without force, fear and intimidation. You should always use communication, understanding and psychology. Stud chains are not the latter!
