Lots of naysayers forgetting just how popular Kodak's Ektar H35 has actually been. This is a good decision from Pentax to go for broad massmarket appeal. If this sells well then Pentax will be able to justify further investment into film cameras going forward. Everyone seemed to be expecting a K1000 relaunch, but that was never goung to happen.
Agree. I think Pentax really thought about this and realised that they have to create something that has the charm of film photography but isn't so complex or expensive that new film photographers don't buy it. I agree that Pentax are effectively competing with the Kodak H35 and are also competing with Facebook Marketplace where secondhand 35mm cameras can be bought for peanuts. It's no good making the worlds greatest 35mm film camera if nobody buys it and it sends the company bankrupt.
It is precisely because they need broad mass market appeal that a half frame camera will not sell as well as a full frame one. If this half frame camera doesn’t sell well it may give Pentax the impression that there is no demand for film cameras and may axe the film project altogether. I will buy one to support further development of film cameras, but I’m not expecting this camera to be the hit they think it will be.
@@AbdonPhirathon You could be right. I'm hoping it's a wild success with cool youngsters and makes a huge profit so Pentax can then make the K1000/MZ-S hybrid.
It’s great to see that they don’t just make a conventional camera and instead rethink every aspect. Considering the target audience they must want to keep the cost down. I hope that doesn’t compromise too much on the build quality. I’m all for a quirky camera and really looking forward to it. PENTAX PENTAX PENTAX!
I'm definitely not a younger person who has never shot film... I am probably in the old fogie category, but watching this, I got goose bumps. I like their thinking, and can't wait to get my hands on one of these. At first, half-frame was a bit of a surprise, but then I realized that I could use this sort of camera as my point-and-shoot to replace digital's current function in my life.
Film cameras are something else, when I first got my hands on one I loved the entire process which feels super different and much more rewarding than the instant high quality photos that we got used to on phones. It really makes you feel like you need to make sure the photo is perfect and gets you some great much more high quality photos because of it.

A reminder for all the film photographers, this camera is not for us! is for the new generation who has never had a film camera. So, please, don't be disappointed, if this will sell well, they will expand the lineup of their cameras. Also I want to point out that it seems that a lot of you don't realize how darn difficult is to make a SLR like a K1000 or a MX. They probably have the capabilities to do it, but they need time, they must proceed by steps, it's the most logical thing to do.
Agree. Pentax also needs to make a profit or the whole thing collapses. Creating a new high quality 35mm slr camera right now would probably not make a profit given the costs to manufacture and market it and the small customer market. New film photographers can pick up a cheap plastic Kodak H35 or a second hand plastic fantastic 1990's automatic slr for peanuts. So Pentax has to offer something that draws people away from the cheap plastic Kodak H35 and old second hand cameras but isn't so expensive and high quality that nobody will buy it. I'm hoping that enough people buy this new Pentax half frame camera that it will make a nice profit for Pentax that they can invest in making their next 35mm film camera....which might be a more expensive all metal 35mm slr for us purists.
They outlined this in the first videos. They hope to release several cameras, once they build up the knowhow and experience again. They are starting with this beginner-oriented point and shoot. And if things go well, more pro oriented cameras (possibly full format) will follow. This is a very logical approach, and it absolutely makes sense to start off with this quirky half format approach. I love it. I will certainly be getting this camera. I have been going back and forth for years about whether or not I should buy a vintage P&S. But I felt like the good ones are overpriced. It wouldn't be Ricoh / Pentax if it wasn't a quirky camera 😆 When I watched this initially I was a little disappointed that it wasn't the camera that "I" had envisioned, but when he worked through their logic I think it makes a lot of sense. I hope all the young hipsters and beginner photographers out there jump on this and the success leads to a second, more traditional 35 mm model. Or, as TKO espouses, maybe another camera maker will take up that mantle. If the lens quality is good and the price is right I'll definitely jump on one.
I absolutely agree. I was hoping Pentax would release an MZ-S mark 2 or an LX mark 2....but then I already have an MZ-S and an LX so what would an updated version of those cameras offer that the original models can't? So I came to the same conclusion as you did. Pentax need something that draws in a new customer base and has to appeal to the mobile phone generation. I think a nice half frame with some manual controls is a great idea. Hopefully it turns a good profit so that Pentax can keep making new film cameras of all varieties. And wouldn't it be great if Nikon, Canon, Fujifilm, Sony, Lumix etc... all joined the party and started making film cameras. Now that would really be something.
I have a Ricoh 500GX for an everyday carry-around. It's 'almost' pocket sized, but I had imagined (or hoped for!) something of that nature, but slimmer, maybe with a pancake lens. But, their offering should still inspire many - after all, photographers (much like musicians) can definitely suffer from 'all the gear, and no idea'.
@@filmnerd.photography "and has to appeal to the mobile phone generation." I was very excited for this camera project and i might buy one when it comes out if the price will be right. I'm a millenial, i never liked taking pictures with a phone and that, as one of the reasons for going half frame is a load of crap. People shoot vertical with the phone because it lacks the ergonomics and it's more convinient that way with one hand it isn't some artistic choice or taste of the younger generations. Also if they put it this way i don't get why would it appeal to anyone to essentially to take mobile photos(which are essentially "free") for a bunch of money with added hassles and i also don't see how a fixed lens with ZONE FOCUSING will fire up everyone's creativity. What can we actually control if it has AE? Will it have AV or TV mode? If it's AE only with zone focusing and half the resolution of 35mm film i don't see great creative potential. I see grainy phone photos with the added benefit of cost, loading and cranking film, the need to go shopping for film and to get it processed and not immediately knowing if your shot turned out bad. It has to be realy cheap, but sadly i don't think it will be cheap enough and interesting enough to win over zoomers, so in the end only film photography enthusiast and pentaxians will buy it, which isn't a huge crowd and most of them wished for a different camera would have actually paid more for it.
I love how you are enthusiastic about this project, really makes it feel as if Pentax and Ricoh Imaging (GR) became artisans taking pleasure at their craft, instead of industry giant who is just churning one product after another. Idea of half frame camera is soooooo cool, great. In this times, with film being rather expensive I think even film street photographers would enjoy such camera, maybe not as main camera, bu as support one, to take fast snaps and so on. I am shooting Pentax K2 for film but I will gladly grab this half frame, exactly because it is half frame. Good job and much luck with this, and hopefully next film projects. PENTAX, PENTAX, PENTAX!
I've been doing photos as a hobby and inadvertently became small-time minolta/sony collector (sorry pentax, but I grew up with a Minolta Hi-Matic E and my 5D hooked me on their AF mount). I actually love the idea of a half-frame camera for today. Kodak did beat you to the punch with their Ektar H35 and some others, but that one's a simple fixed-focus fixed-shutter fixed-aperture deal. Please let this have a glass lens. But what we all want to know is: Where is the preorder so we can go ahead and throw money at you for this? :)
Since most of the old Half frame cameras with Selenium meter are dead (Olympus Pen EE, Canon Demis, Fujica Half...) having a new Half Frame camera with a proper lens, light meter and electronics is a dream come true for a compact, portable and fun camera. Nice idea Pentax!
It might not be what some expected but I think it's wonderful that a company of this size (meaning not huge like Nikon) would go this far out on a limb for film photography. This is super risky for them but I hope it works out. As a long time Pentax user I'll be there on day one.
it´s great news, i still love film! I've learned how to photograph with a Pentax K-1000. I loved that camera! Maybe Pentax can produce a new K-1000 type of camera with a M42 mount! Thank you for your vision and products! It's time for film!
It sounds like Pentax is going in the right direction with this. The Kodak Ektar half frame camera is plastic junk. If this new Pentax has all or most of the features discussed here, is built solid, and isn’t prohibitively expensive, I think it will be a hit. I’m looking forward to it!
In typical fashion, pentax/ricoh is behind the curve. NO way they will market this with the same success Kodak/Ektar has with their half-frame. This will be likely very high priced, but failed quality.
@@DozierGraphic I fear you'll be correct on the price, but I feel the Kodak is also severely overpriced. By your thumbnail, it looks like you're old enough to remember that crappy plastic cameras like that used to be almost if not free sometimes. It's like cereal box toy junk. I think they should be $20 max, with film. If the Pentax is a little higher quality, hopefully much higher, and is $100 to $200 -ish, I think it might be a success. Otherwise, it's only goin to be bought by rich kid hipsters in LA/NYC type places. So... I'm becoming less hopeful the more I think about it.
Congratulations to Pentax for this incredible effort. I'm probably not in your target audience for this camera, but I've always dreamt of a half frame camera and don't want to gamble on those mouldy Olympus PEN samples found on ebay Japan. Pentax, if you slap a good lens on this (Olympus XA good), I WILL buy this!
I shoot mostly on my pentax 67 but I am super excited to pick up one of these cameras for my B cam. can't wait sounds like a very well produced and thought through camera. Love seeing this innovation plus this leads to a whole line up of cameras in the future. We Love PENTAX!!!!
Great work Ricoh and Pentax! Although this camera is not for me I'll get it out of curiosity (if reasonably priced), and hold on waiting for either a street compact camera like GR or a proper manual SLR. When you do bring it all to life stick to vintage designs like the Ricoh Auto Half you showed in the video. It'll sell like crazy!
Let's hope they don't get silly with price though. Admittedly, this will be costly for them to produce, but I assume they realise that not every photographer lives in a loft apartment, and drives a new Tesla!
It's a smart move, to start something back again. Talking personally, I have left many of my cameras to rest and enjoying my olympus PEN half frame more than ever. A lot of people, especially young people are coming to my shared darkroom space (In Milan, Italy) using film and I assure you that a good part are loving the half frame trick. Still personally, I LOVE the 4:3 aspect ratio that half frame gives. I am really curious, and totally ready to give you my support. Thanks, Pentax, you are a brave brand with heart.
I'm pretty stoked for this and will be a reason to try a half-frame camera. Also, I hope this is successful and does make other manufacturers take note and join in.
Huge love for this project. I was skeptical about half frame, but after hearing the whole video out, I think it will be amazing! Looking forward to it!
I must admit I read that they are making a new film camera and was initially hoping for a slr but It doesn't sound like it's going to be one. They must be going the route that polaroid and fuji have been going. Making something accessible for beginners. I am really curious what they will come up with. I highly suspect the whole haptic is something they will aim at. I really respect that decision. The hardest part will be to make it feel right and not cheap. I do hope they manage to pull it off since it could get people interested in it again. And with a bit of momentum, as some of the others have pointed out, it could lead to more developtment into better systems. :)
Sabırsılıkla bekliyorum. Umarım Türkiye’ye de gelir ve uygun fiyata satılır. Fujifilm’in Türkiye’ye gösterdiği nezaketi sizden de bekliyorum. İyi dileklerimle…
Looking good and all the best for the upcoming half frame camera. Hopefully with the sales, we can move back into the 2nd phase of the plan which is traditional 135 cameras and eventually 120 cameras. As a working professional, I'd definitely like to see either an update and continue support of parts for Pentax 645N and Pentax 67/67MLU/67ii. If they really go above and beyond by releasing the 67iii, that would be the dream. Please, no autofocus in the 6x7 line ups, leave that for the digital guys.
I am so excited for this film project! I love the reasoning behind the choices you made for this first film camera. You guys have no idea how anxious I am to take photos with it. I ♥you Pentax & Ricoh!!!
Eventually, people will realize that enjoyment & the fun in photography is not super fast auto focus, pin sharp picture and high mega-pixels. Camera companies knows like all businesses knows, to sustain their business is to attract new & young users to their brands. Retro is fun, vinyls, cassette tapes, film cameras, 80's, 90's music, movies, are where amazing pure fun still remains, and keep on coming back. It is also no surprise, as all the current over digitization, and AI art, music, fake stories are getting so boring and tiring. NICE one PENTAX!!
Vertical format is a good idea - I've missed it since the 1970s when I owned an Agfa 18/24mm and later on an Olympus Pen F (very fine with OM-adapter and crop factor 1.4). And as you say: young generations are accustomed to handle vertical format with smartphone & iPad. For me, as a passionate portrait photographer, vertical format is the best choice as well. The benefit with analogue: 72 instead of 36 exp. (with HP5/72 in the 1980s > up to 147 exp.).Thank you, Pentax! My former experiences with Pentax: 6x7 (awesome!) goes back to 1973, MX/ME/MEsuper, and last not least Spotmatic SP (this one until now).
Sounds awesome - I'm a big advocate of the half frame format. I hope people will find it as fun and beautiful as I do. I'm pretty disappointed by the Ektar that came out a couple years ago, so I'm hoping this one is of much higher quality, and if so I'll be buying it for sure!
I'm as old as the Pentax S1 and I love shooting alternative formats (half frame, 110, Minox 8x11) and I'm excited. Even if I'm not the target group of the camera I appreciate the automation-where-it-helps - manualisation-where-it-does-not-stop-the-fun approach. When you need spectacles for reading your morning paper the appeal of a full manual camera gets slightly diminished. Those figures on lens barrels can be tiny. As much as I love my classic cameras I find myself shooting more automated gear. So Pentax go! And thanks for the update!👌👍👃
I'm almost 50 and not sure I will ever shoot film again but I would definitely purchase one of these cameras to help support the project and the effort Pentax has gone to.
TKO, what a credit to Pentax and to Japanese culture you are! Your enthusiasm has ironed out my scepticism entirely - as has your well thought our strategy on what you are doing and why. Its been a long time since any presentation genuinely excited me. I can't wait to hear more!

@@filmnerd.photographyI want the exterior of a K1000 with the internals of the MZ-S. I doubt that this will ever happen, but one can only dream.
@@AbdonPhirathon oh mate, now you've got me dreaming! Nice one!
@@filmnerd.photography "and has to appeal to the mobile phone generation."
I was very excited for this camera project and i might buy one when it comes out if the price will be right.
楽しそうなカメラになりそうですね
絶対に買います!
本当に楽しみにしています🎉
It might not be what some expected but I think it's wonderful that a company of this size (meaning not huge like Nikon) would go this far out on a limb for film photography. This is super risky for them but I hope it works out. As a long time Pentax user I'll be there on day one.
熱量が...PENTAXを使い続けていて良かったなぁ
it´s great news, i still love film! I've learned how to photograph with a Pentax K-1000. I loved that camera! Maybe Pentax can produce a new K-1000 type of camera with a M42 mount! Thank you for your vision and products! It's time for film!
This makes me so happy. I want to put it on a drone.
We’re all waiting for those shots haha
I am so excited about this!!!!!! Thank you Pentax for supporting the film community.
I shoot mostly on my pentax 67 but I am super excited to pick up one of these cameras for my B cam. can't wait sounds like a very well produced and thought through camera. Love seeing this innovation plus this leads to a whole line up of cameras in the future. We Love PENTAX!!!!
Will get one for sure, I think half frame is a good workaround for film costs. Cant wait for a look at the finished product
待っていました…素晴らしい知らせを聞くことができて、本当に感謝しかありません…!「新しいフィルムカメラ」、なんという素敵な響き…手にできるのを楽しみにしています…!
Pentax - for the love of photography.
I'm excited. What do you guys think, how much will this gem cost? Any speculations?
800 US$/1000 US$.....
I don't think I've ever been this excited for a new camera, if we want film photography to survive and thrive, we NEED to get younger people into it.
Let's hope they don't get silly with price though.
Admittedly, this will be costly for them to produce, but I assume they realise that not every photographer lives in a loft apartment, and drives a new Tesla!
Sounds like a great camera! Can't wait!!
Smart thinking, first product to get the $$ flowing and hopefully follow up with an SLR.
I'm pretty stoked for this and will be a reason to try a half-frame camera. Also, I hope this is successful and does make other manufacturers take note and join in.
小学生の頃、お年玉で買った人生初のカメラはハーフサイズでした。よみがえるなあ、あの頃が。
3編出たぁぁぁぁ
We are excited too!
It’s time for film & Pentax to come back! 😍
Please, no autofocus in the 6x7 line ups, leave that for the digital guys.
wow !!! i am ready to get this new film pentax camera!!!

Its my 4th pentax camera. Thank you pentax!
I can’t wait to shoot on this new camera!
I love half frame! I’ll be a day one buyer for sure.

Wow, very emotional video. OK Pentax, I don't need a film camera but you guys convinced me to get one as soon as you release it. Take my money! XD
I'm almost 50 and not sure I will ever shoot film again but I would definitely purchase one of these cameras to help support the project and the effort Pentax has gone to.
I will be excited to buy this and even more excited for a more professional camera when it comes along. Especially medium format.
