"If you're not different, you better have a low price." I admire the heck out of Pentax/Ricoh for recognizing this idea some time ago and sticking to what makes them different from other current camera makers and then expanding on it.
A very big "thank you" to Pentax for realizing this great, but also risky project! Highly appreciated! And thank you Hashem for this very interesting interview!
When I got back into shooting film in my 30's 2013-2018 before I had to sell off all my stuff due to personal issues I stupidly bought a ton of film cameras and even the great Nikon F3. I even had a brand new in box Nikon FM3A that I paid 1000 for back in 2014...now forget it but the camera I enjoyed shooting 35mm film the most with was the basic K1000 with a 30mm 2.8 lens or a 50mm lens.
Such a wonderful and honest conversation. I was surprised so many of the questions were answered without a "corporate filter", in other words, polite, direct, and honest.
I am delighted with my Pentax 17 and happy to hear the positivity and future outlook of film. The belief of people to buy the 17 was to see more models and they have given us the encouragement that more models will eventually hit the shelves. They are so proud of their achievements and the success of the 17, rightly so. Brave decision and faith in the consumer. Kudos to Pentax , film is no dead.
Thank you for this interview. I came to Pentax through my dad, but the last few years I've come to admire their philosophy even more. Brands that create for end-users are often deemed niche, but they do gather strong, committed followings. Pentax is one of the few.
Well done, Pentax. I’ve observed the evolution over the years. When a company understands its market position and its customers, it can truly thrive again.
Brave of the gentlemen to take the interview and speak so candidly. The younger gentleman's opinion of why film is becoming so popular -- the memories tied to each shot -- resonate with me. Thank you for the video.
I have been using my Pentax 17 a lot of summer for mini vacations with the family. If combined with a fine grain film and good scans and results are stunning. The lens is superb!
I just want to add that I have enjoyed using my Pentax 17 so much more than most of my other cameras in the past few months and I can only thank Pentax for that. Great job!
Thanks Hashem, great interview. It is so good that Pentax is back in the film camera business. The best bit to hear is that they are enabling the knowledge to be passed on to a new generation of engineers and product designers. As an ex-Kodak Australasia person, I know how much knowledge went out the door when they closed Coburg let alone how much would have been made redundant at Rochester in the last 20 years
This interview needs more distribution. I have seen the Pentax 17 in the shops, and I'd decided firmly against getting one because I'm a dyed jn the wool SLR user. But now I am starting to see the sense of this product, and I'm seriously considering getting one for my young adult daughter. It may not be what I would use, but it will definitely draw a younger generation into serious photography. Clearly, the top management of Pentax are very intelligent people and they understand the market perfectly. Good luck to them!
Great job on the interview! It's nice to see that Pentax is finding somewhere they can grow. My first DSLR was a Pentax *ist DS so I've got a general fondness for the brand.
Fascinating and true words of extremly convinced and motivated managers. Admirable. Looking forward to their next creations. A Pentax FF or MF analogue will be a safe buy. May be they will be the one, who can do a hybrid film and mirrorless camera one day.
Fantastic. I love their enthusiasm and the concept that the Pentax 17 is a bridge between the current generation of engineers who grew up with digital imaging and their film based predecessors. Y
These folks and their Pentax 17 have endeared me to Pentax. I used to own their DSLRs and now I’m sorry I sold all that gear. I am going to support them in the future if they come out with other unique film cameras.
Great interview and really appreciate their candidness with their answers. It’s cool that they are still able to exist (and hopefully thrive long term) as a niche manufacturer.
It is really nice to have seen the enthusiasm Pentax has in keeping and further developing film cameras. I look forward to seeing more innovative film cameras from them in the future. Really nicely organised and casual interview. Thank you.
Thank you very much for this great and interesting interview. I have bought the Pentax 17 although I’m not really interested in this camera, but I want to support the film project. In the meantime I found out how much fun the Pentax 17 can be (highly recommended!) I love the open communication about the project, and hope that one day we will see a Medium Format film camera from PENTAX again! This would be great. Thank you very much for listening 🙏 PENTAX, PENTAX, PENTAX!
That was great, thank you. I think looking upward from below at an industry it always seems like everything in capialism is just about squeezing profits from wherever and whoever they can, and of course they illstarated how they have market-based needs for going forward, but this gave a human face to the Industry, and I think it gave me a little more confidence that this is not just a fly by night whim on their part to extract some portion of what they may see as a temporary trend. I think it gave you some confidence as well watching your response. I really hope that Analog, all over the creative world, continues to reassert itself as a viable, and important alternative.
i just wonder and hope if/that the eventual film SLR will be able to operate KAF4 lenses...it would be a bit of a bummer of they stick with KAF2 (screwdrive only)
Great interview, Hashem. It made me feel more connected to the brand for a moment and even grew my interest in wanting to buy the new camera just for the sake of supporting their philosophy and approach to camera making. I think their media showings will be very beneficial for gaining more positive attention for the brand. It's going to be interesting to see if any other companies follow suit or not. I think you point of cameras hitting a ceiling is definitely valid, I've even found myself going back in time for my digital camera with a simpler point and shoots to capture a more fulfilling experience that's lost in more modern tech. Cameras in the modern sense, for me, just serve as a work tool, rather than a personal one for pleasure. Keep up the great work with the channel, and hope to catch up sometime soon 👍
You are safe, that's extremely unlikely to happen. They would have to charge exorbitant prices for the camera and lenses due to the low demand there would be for a Pentax MF system. The demand for Pentax FF is already not great (unfortunately) and the demand for the more expensive and heavier MF system must be at least a magnitude lower.
Now I’m thinking: what if there was a 645 version of the Pentax 17? A “compact” with excellent handling and a crazy-good lens from the Pentax optical designers. Probably need autofocus, since scale focus with medium format depth of field gets trickier. I know there are some folks who want a 67 SLR, but a 645 compact is still going to have a massive negative, and if the lens is as sharp as Pentax has often done, I don’t think folks would be disappointed with the results.
Excellent interview, Hashem! Very good questions and you handled yourself well. Very professional. You were like a Sky News reporter! 2 things I learned: the cameras are assembled in Vietnam, and the camera is such a success they are racing to supply the cameras around the world. A good problem to have. I see them possibly making a full frame model based on the 17. Then maybe stretching the camera vertically to fit 120 film. It may take a few years but if demand is strong it may come to be. Great work Hashem!
A great interview. Thank you🙏 Owning nearly every Pentax model they have produced, half frame was not what I was hoping for. But I am also not their younger target market. Will definitely add it to the collection. How could you not support what they are trying to do. I so hope they bring a medium format back to the market 🤞
While the Pentax 17 and generally film project are great and I appreciate Pentax is doing it, I still hope that management will not abandon the best of Pentax, which was K1 and generally full frame DSLR. While I love unique lenses of Pentax, I also hope they will change their mind and add "heavy" lens to the DFA series as I still miss the 600mm focal length in the lineup. K1 deserves to have it's come back and hopefully a moment of glory. Now would be a great time to do that. Everyone switches to mirrorless. Let them do that and let's not look at what others are doing. I wish all the best for Pentax brand and DSLR in general.
Thank you for Pentax 17 on my behalf and on behalf of the film community! The second camera should be the GR successor (it would be instant buy for me and many others) and then for the third do market research :) Fourth one medium format
I love what Pentax is doing. The 17 is unfortunately not currently a camera that meets any needs/desires of mine but I’m really looking forward to what they bring in the future and I really wish I could support them financially already. I still love my GRii so hopefully a GRiv drops soon and I can support that way!
Stay unique Pentax, every industry needs someone with different ideas and driving innovation. Photography is not only about Mpx or autofocus speed. I enjoy using manual lenses from time to time with my K-5IIs. Thinking about K-1 or K-3 but not sure if I need it 😅 Pentax 17 is very exciting however I can't afford it atm, have more important things to address. Again my K-5IIs does everything 💯
Nice work getting this interview Hashem 💪🏽 I think what Pentax is doing is amazing. People making requests for a full auto camera are kind of missing the point of film, learning photography is half the fun not just letting the camera do literally everything. Just go shoot digital I think 😮
I appreciate what they are doing. Of course as a certified geezer I have no interest in a half frame camera or a point and shoot. I am moving to medium format (6x4.5 or 6x6) but I would consider getting a mechanical full frame 35 as a backup to my Minolta X-570 in case it becomes unusable, especially if it comes with an adjustable diopter.
Just out of random interest are you American or English? Because I feel like being a 'certified geezer' has two different connotations and it just amused me to know which one you are
@@mkshffr4936 Geezer in the UK (more London really) means a man in general, but more specifically means someone street smart, a bit larger than life, extroverted, who probably enjoys to party, maybe a bit cocky; an alpha male sort of person. So a certified geezer in the UK would be someone who is 100% like that. Whereas I think in America it means more of an old guy? Just made me smile
Haha interesting! I didn't know about the London connotation. I always understood it in the latter context, or someone "old school, not into new tech/trends"
Awesome interview. It's interesting to here from the people who develop cameras. It would be fascinating to hear from people who helped create iconic cameras like the Nikon F series, Canon A-1, Mamiya RB67 etc.
It's crazy how this company still exists with this philosophy and way of thinking, like they are stubborn and proud of it even when everything is pointing to other direction.
@@hcarbuccia they got office copiers and other electronic stuff to help keep them afloat. Let’s see? Maybe in one or two years plenty of these half frames will be sold on *bay because the novelty is worn out? As for me if I want another Pentax film camera I just buy a used full frame one. There’s people who make excuses for not buying used Pentax because they say it’s old and will break down but I’ve never had it happen to me so I’ll keep buying used ones if I like to.
I would like to see a compact fully automatic point and shoot and of course an SLR. And as I mentioned before it would be great for the "second-hand-community" if Pentax went and reproduced some frequently needed spare parts for the many great existing cameras. They have got the plans and - even if the tools are long lost - with modern CNC production it couldn't be too much trouble to make them. The biggest advantage for Pentax would be that there still is a network of service centers that could immediately restart repairing the older models. My request had been declined because parts aren't available anymore. And I'm sure I'm not the only one. And people pay for that service. I got my camera repaired in the end somewhere else but without new spares it's just a matter of time before it breaks again. So Pentax people, if you read this, please remanufacture some needed spare parts. These are mostly plastic and rubber that degraded over time. Battery compartments. Gears. Maybe 3D printable. Many camera models have one or two parts that are the main reason the camera stops working. I'm still excited for the things that may come and I'm glad the 17 seems to sell well. (Even though it isn't quite my cup of tea and it's too expensive just to try it out in my eyes. Maybe it could be the base for a full frame model and the electronically moving lens appears like a preparation for autofocus. Maybe mass production will make it cheaper.) I would love to see all those things happen but I understand Pentax has to be careful and considerate about what they do so they don't kill the company accidentally. Good luck!
They should build a compact full frame camera like the Panasonic Lumix S9 with the video capabilites of the Fujifilm X-H2s. We could then finally use all our pentax lenses for video projects.
Pentax 17 is a good thing for the market, where practically no new equipment has been made for years - except for Leicas and toy cameras. But - this is a product aimed to beginners, and as such, can offer very little to anyone more serious in film photography. Especially the lens with only a zone focusing system, with only f 3.5, and the fact the camera shoots half frame, are limiting this camera either as a curiosity, or as a someone' s first film camera.
Great interview Hashem. Only focusing on the Pentax 17 for now, as opposed to working on the next film camera, is kinda disappointing but I can understand they want to do it justice, which is a very valid strategy. Now get out there and review the camera!!!!!
I thank the vice president of ashai pentax to accept the meeting.i hope since they understand there was a huge and hunger for new family cameras they consider a stronger and robust product with much faster lens all metal /brass body with separate flash system and synch cord..i believe they would be a winner and leading company in film division....
I had the original Fuji X100, Fuji XE-1, Fuji XT-1. Fun cameras the but original Ricoh GR digital was my fav. I paid 430 dollars for mine new off amazon but now I know Ricoh GR 3 is over 1k. I gotta save up.
I think they should bring back a camera like the K1000 or an upgraded version of one with faster shutter speed. But keep it simple and have manual controls.
Pentax users may not want big, heavy lenses. But many Pentax users want some bigger lenses. If they're too small nowadays to make a 500 6.3 etc, have Tamron make it. There's a market and the timing is right - if it's cheaper and better than the over-priced 560 calamity.
price of 560 is a misuderstanding, especially after so many years. I think they have bad strategy about everything.. I am big fan of pentax, but its hard to believe it's not a dead system. Do they just want to give up on digital cameras and make film ones?
Pentax, if you are reading this comment, thank you and please consider bringing an autofocus, auto wind-rewind, preferably premium, point and shoot analog camera.
Wonder if they would ever released a digital copy of the k1000 for example. That would be my buy. The zf from Nikon is too big and too digital for my taste
I don't understand the "portrait orientation" argument. Most photos I take with my smartphone are in landscape format. Do people really predominantly use portrait orientation on smartphones?
@@xmeda First, you don't know that. Second, Pentax has stated that they are working on a K-1 II successor. Third, even if it were true that no K-1 III is in development that would be interesting news.
Optically Pentax lenses are superb. Pentax camera bodies are weak (failure prone) the film Pentax MZ serious broken plastic gear problem fixed much too late by using metal gear later. K 30,50,70 digital the aperture block problem. There’s more problems with their other camera bodies too. I just went to mirrorless with another brand and use my Pentax lenses on it. Honestly no regrets and I get the best of both worlds going this route.
I fully concur with you on the film Pentax MZ series. I’ve got 4 useless door stop cameras due to Pentax using deteriorating plastic gear. Plus version 1 then version 2 bask for back. Jeezes just get it right from the start So there’s no need for a mark 2 with a year or two for some of their cameras.
@@ShutterKnack after 4 broken MZ series cameras I honestly given up on it. A dollar short a day late even if there’s a fix or Pentax used metal ones in their later MZ cameras. I repeat I’m stuck with 4 broken cameras and it’s not worth from fixing especially if it’s a well known manufacturers fault. They should of had a recall on it with free $ fixing.
@@bonghungk7544add me on the broken MZ list. If Pentax stood by their cameras they should of had a factory recall to fix this issue for free. Anyways I’m using another brand now and I don’t look back.
@@bonghungk7544I feel your sentiment. If Pentax company really backed their cameras up they should have a manufacturers recall to fix their design fault. It’s really I excusable.
Having spent my childhood in the late 70's and through the 80's, I saw all my toys turn from metal to plastic. Plastic, for me, is a dirty word. I _hate_ plastic. Sure it has it's place, but this the p17 reminds me of all my plastic broken irrepariable toys. Be different, use metal. Maybe this is a "prototype" and the next one will have a better focusing system and wont be made from crappy plastic. I must admit, I thought film was dead, after seeing a review of this camera, film is back baby! So I'm looking at older rangefinders (kiev, nikon s2), and maybe an olympus pen eed. :-) Thanks Pentax for getting me back into something interesting, I'm sorry I can't justify buying this one though, maybe the next one. Metal case, parts, please, build something that will _last_ and not break 2 weeks after the warranty runs out (like everyone else).

Haha interesting! I didn't know about the London connotation. I always understood it in the latter context, or someone "old school, not into new tech/trends"
@@flintafus2527 😂Definitely not a London Geezer.
It’s Ricoh they have many different subsidiaries to keep them $$afloat.
@myronrolle8903 this has to be like a toy for them and bad decisions don't represent big financial problems?
Maybe mass production will make it cheaper.)
I would love to see all those things happen but I understand Pentax has to be careful and considerate about what they do so they don't kill the company accidentally.
Especially the lens with only a zone focusing system, with only f 3.5, and the fact the camera shoots half frame, are limiting this camera either as a curiosity, or as a someone' s first film camera.
hoping for an SLR next! a switch to choose between half-frame and full-frame would be amazing, like on the konica autoreflex!
wow great interview Hashem!
Thanks very much!
exciting!
I use Pentax K70 and several m42 screwount film camera/lenses
Great interview Hashem. Only focusing on the Pentax 17 for now, as opposed to working on the next film camera, is kinda disappointing but I can understand they want to do it justice, which is a very valid strategy. Now get out there and review the camera!!!!!
I thank the vice president of ashai pentax to accept the meeting.i hope since they understand there was a huge and hunger for new family cameras they consider a stronger and robust product with much faster lens all metal /brass body with separate flash system and synch cord..i believe they would be a winner and leading company in film division....
Excellent video.
Thank you
New SLR please. I'm tempted by the 17 but I'm old school too. I think with 17 demand outstripping supply that it won't be too long
Great interview! The Pentax 17 is not for me, but I'm certainly looking forward to whatever Pentax does next.
❤ Pentax
When will a 645 medium format model be released?
The Pentax ME Super II or a new MX would be nice for the future of the K-Mount, but a Ricoh GR Film edition would also sell like hot cakes for years.
Yep, I think a new Ricoh GR film camera would be a top pick for many as the next stage 😁
Most interesting point for me was: kids wanna shoot portrait, lowering film cost was an afterthought.
Fortune favours the brave.
When will they update medium format camera, either digital or film.
I had the original Fuji X100, Fuji XE-1, Fuji XT-1. Fun cameras the but original Ricoh GR digital was my fav. I paid 430 dollars for mine new off amazon but now I know Ricoh GR 3 is over 1k. I gotta save up.
I would love these guys to bring out a new GR using film
Maybe that will be stage 2! 😁 Let's see
I think they should bring back a camera like the K1000 or an upgraded version of one with faster shutter speed. But keep it simple and have manual controls.
In slr and dslr versions. And please, without autofocus, like in the original k1000
Pentax, if you are reading this comment, thank you and please consider bringing an autofocus, auto wind-rewind, preferably premium, point and shoot analog camera.
goated
I love analoge old pentex cameras kx camera my favourite camera ❤❤❤❤ new pentex 17 film camea not hare in pakistan i am waiting this camera❤❤❤❤
I would love to see an affordable spot meter.
That would be cool to see
I'm still in search of their monochrome. Looks fun
For sure. More affordable than other popular monochrome options too
Wow
Wonder if they would ever released a digital copy of the k1000 for example. That would be my buy. The zf from Nikon is too big and too digital for my taste
Looking forward new Pentax mirrorless too
I don't understand the "portrait orientation" argument. Most photos I take with my smartphone are in landscape format. Do people really predominantly use portrait orientation on smartphones?
Yeah they do, as far as I see
@@pushingfilm OK, thanks.
Imagine a digital Pentax LX.
645の復活してほしいです。
私も😁
Where is K-1 Mark III ?
No question about the K-1 III???
Why? There is none coming.
@@xmeda First, you don't know that. Second, Pentax has stated that they are working on a K-1 II successor. Third, even if it were true that no K-1 III is in development that would be interesting news.
But still no GR monochrome
Take my money, Ricoh Pentax.
Did he just say ricoh - pentax a small company?. I mean in comparison to nikon& canon it is.. But still...
Not all MZ cameras are door stops. Some have factory brass gear

Pentax q.
M42 digital.
Compact camera with mechanical lens.

A question about a new K1III would also have been useful.
