She isn't lying if she didn't know.
This is how asian parents accuse my mom does this to me too😖
They'll call it ignorance then. Some Asian families don't care for "pesants"
Yep
But, how would you know that she wasn't lying about not knowing. We know that she didn't know, and the backstory, but the others didn't. So I understand the mother's concern, to a degree.
@ymarrero23 Yes, she didn't like her from the beginning because she did not know Rachel. How would she know her motives for marrying her son? He never told her about Rachel and they just met. Ofcourse she would be skeptical, and send a private investigator. (Which is not uncommon when working with a wealthy company owner, stock broker, or marrying into a family of certain status)
Rachel didn't even know from her mother story until the truth came. Maybe she was protecting the truth from her.
that's definitely what her mother was doing.
Yeah she even said What happened to the dad
Here’s the thing: Rachel’s mother, Kerry has been keeping the truth from Rachel for years about Rachel’s father because she was afraid Rachel will find out. When nick’s mom and grandmother demand answers about Rachel’s mother’s past, Kerry, Rachel’s mother, finally tells the story about Rachel’s father near the end.
@@jeffreytan2186 The most ironic thing, is in the sequel book, Rachel finds out that her biological father is one of the richest men in mainland china. Not her mother's ex-husband, but her actual biological father is wealthier than the family in this movie.
But later, she said she knew the boyfriend told her, so this movie got some plot holes, but good nonetheless.
Such a good scene. Shows how the grandmother is the root of an old conservative ideal. When she rejects Rachel, grabs onto her grandson and then grabs her daughter. The staging and metaphorical implications is very well done
It is normal in rich asians.. Actually even if you are not rich..reputaion is a very impotant in asians.
That is not her Daughter, it is her daughter-in-law.
Read My Description right the grandma ain’t think his mom was good enough either lol
@@sharnagrayson9649 yeah, Ah Ma didn't want her at the first place.
And she was so nice at first, lulling us to think she was the kind, wise grandmother. But shes realistic.
Rachel didn't choose to be born this way LOL

Exactly
Noah Thong well then that’s stupid. I’m Asian tho lol
Well, they don’t want to affiliated with such family with this kind of scandal.
The rich can’t never understand that
Asian culture is like royalty.. REPUTATION in EVERYTHING is very important.. Especially when you are Rich..
I agree but reputation is something that do matter for even middle class in Asia . As u said its in culture so its part of everyone.
I have dated a rich girl with similar family and they are corrupt and disgusting. They hid their dark past and pretends to be good and attack those with unfortunate background ... it’s all an act.
@@mira269 They all do
@@kathleenabbu8553 not all rich asians are like that. To be specific most rich asians that are like that are those who grew up in the city. There are a lot of rich asians who has good manners and good heart but they don't accept a new family member when you don't have high achievements to brag but that doesn't mean they are disgusting... They just want their children to be in good hands.
That's sad.
It's almost funny how they want to tell Nick that Rachel would bring a big scandal to the family when literally all of their family members got scandals of their own 😂😭
No, the other family don't have any scandal except for Nick sister who gonna get divorce. We see the Young family from inside person pov (Nick and Rachel) but for outsider, their family is perfect. But if Nick married to Rachel then it will be a big scandal, remember the first time Rachel get secretly taked picture in America, now imagine if their knew Rachel's family background, other rich family will definitely kill the Young. And don't forget, media will make it worse
It's because they chose to be like that, pathetic!
Gah fr!!!
what scandal? Rachel technically lied about her story
@ruhollahetemadi7518 Technically Rachel never lied about her story, her mother did. Rachel grew up thinking her father was dead, this was news to her too.
Imagine shipping your child off to be raised by their grandma and having the nerve to criticize a woman who raised their child by themselves, put her through college, and has an incredibly amazing job that’s equal to your extremely rich son. If this was my daughter I would have burnt down the house but I’m not as classy lol
Yes! Hot damn, I’d provide the alibi lol
Yeah, right
Get real
Gahd it's so Asian. I'm not even rich nor Chinese. Just a middle class Filipino and this is all that toxic home trait. Always thinking about what other people will think and say.
I am indian and whatever u said is so relatable!!!
So all Asian cultures are similar!
I was kind of hoping to see the sequel of grandmother after Nick proposed to Rachel.
@@alexbordon8886 depends, under certain aspects i’d say sure.
@@alexbordon8886 It depends.
The fact that the mother was clueless about the 'fake' dad being abusive just makes this scene much more hurtful
Rachel had no idea whatsoever. She was NOT to blame.
When I was 20, home from college for the summer, my 16 year old brother brought home his girlfriend for a half hour before they went to some teenage event or party. I instantly didn’t like her, though I can now acknowledge there was nothing wrong with her, I was just being extremely critical and judgmental. After they left, I started complaining to my mom about this horrible girl who had her claws into my brother. My mother stopped me, told me to sit down, and told me something I’ve never forgotten.
She said, “Your brother is young now and it will be awhile before he marries, so I want you to remember this. When a couple get together, they’ll become a part of either his family or her family. So if you want your brother in your life, or any of your other brothers and sisters, you welcome whoever they pick with open arms. That’s how you keep your family together.”
My mother was very wise. She was Native American, of the Western Shoshone. She died in 2015. Cherish your family. I miss her still.
that's lovely. My father told me something similar that he learned from my grandma. Because my grandma hated white people, so of course, she absolutely did not like my dad, but she tolerated and welcomed him because he's smart, well-traveled, a good provider and made my mom happy. From that he learned that it doesn't matter who his children bring home. The only thing that matters is that his children have chosen them and they make each other happy. That's all the reason he needs to welcome them into the family. He doesn't have to like them, he doesn't have to be friends with them, he doesn't have to go out of his way to be friendly with them. But he does have to tolerate and respect them because these are the people his children chose.
That's beautiful. I'm sorry for your loss.
She was wise. I have a different sort of respect for Native Americans. Their strength and knowledge is amazing.
To all westerners, this is the typical asian family discussion at the dinner table.

She had no right to dig into her private life.
The media will do it, if she didn't
Rich people do this all the time. You think rich white people don't do this? Wake up.
there is no private life if you consider to get married. I would like to know if a woman I like is a former prostitute, junkie, triple murderer if she did prison time or whatever. That is called knowing somebody before you marry them. I dont want to find out for some nasty things after I marry her.
Oh she had every right to search up for it her grandson you don't just let your family suffer for your lack of responsibility .But yes the way she presented the stuff is not cool
She has every right to do so, but how she blew it up that dramatically wasn't cool indeed
I'm glad they showed the true side of grandma. I often see grandparents being sweet af in movies, better than the bitchy parents. But in reality, Asian grandparents are conservative and often apathetic.
Edit: y'all stop ganging up on poor Juan in the replies lol, dude was just making conversation and not being a conservative a-hole or anything
What's wrong with being conservative
There is nothing wrong being conservative. But being intolerant of others that have different upbringing than you is the problem.
@@juanmeza958 this isn’t about the political conservativeness you’re probably referring to; this is more so about being old-fashioned and thinking in the ways of the past.

Sometimes I get sick after arguing with my conservative relatives. They're narrow-minded af.
I was so upset when the grandmother turned out to be so mean too
Yeah, she was a total snob.
She was the root of the problem from the beginning.
I hated Nick so much, he basically throw her to the wolves. By growing up in that society and with that family you think he may know better and prepared Rachel for the waves.
Fr, it’s like he’s completely clueless
Marry a crazy rich guy when the women is just normal folk is tough, if Rachel flee just like that. then she not the right women for Nick.
But some point you are right, Nick should know better, Rachel is lucky to have a rich BFF in SG to sponsor her dress up. or else its totally disaster.
Maybe he thought she could handle herself since she is a strong independent New York Woman.
I can tell y'all are not Asians. Nick knew what his family is like? Duh. Should he have stood up to them? Yeah. Is it surprising he didn't? Not if you are an asian, no. While not every one is like that, many are. The culture of always respecting adults of family is very much ingrained in most, especially when they might have to stand against them for a non-blood relation. Nick could disagree with them, soothe his gf later ( haven't watched the movie so i don't know how it played out), talk to his mom later in private, etc but outright standing against them in a situation like this where they are trash talking his girl? Not always a certainty.
They treat the favourite child different
If I remember the book correctly, Rachel was indeed blind sided by all the information they were saying to her. Her “supposed” father was disgraced and serving life in prison. Her mother lied to protect her saying he was dead.
Rachel was about to take off for China to conclude her summer trip at the end of the first book to go see him. Her mother comes in time to tell her another truth bomb: that man wasn’t really her father. That man was abusive and her actual biological father was another boy from her village (if I remember correctly). So, the man she was planning on seeing wasn’t even her real father!
Well, jokes on Nick’s mom and grandma, Rachel’s dad is MORE, MORE rich than them HAHAHAHA
P.s. Nick doesn’t propose at the end of the first book. He returns to New York with her, but separate to rekindle their relationship. He doesn’t talk to his mother or grandmother for almost 2 years for the way they disrespected her.
So Rachel is rich?
Lily Juliene Cagas technically her biological father is. In the second book, he is married and has a son. She goes and visits him in China with Nick so she can get to know him and her half-brother. I honestly can’t remember much, but I don’t think she want his money in any way. This makes me want to reread the second book now so I can remember 😂
More rich than them???? Girlfriend I gotta read this book now. What have you done🤣
Come on, you shouldn't spoiled it.
Rosa Mbongo That sounds so formulaic. Everybody becomes rich at the end of this book.
This scene hits home. It happened to me.
I dated a rich Chinese man 2 years ago. We met in Atlanta but he's from China. We both liked each other alot. I didn't know how wealthy he was, but I did know he made good money. I've only known him for over a month.
Long story short, he invited me to visit him in Shanghai. Of course he paid for everything. Like I said, I knew he made good money but I didn't know how wealthy he was. I found out after seeing I have a first class ticket and I'm staying in a suite at a 5 star hotel in Shanghai.
I was in China for 2 weeks. He gave me a SIM card with unlimited data and cash credit to purchase stuff.... Of course I accepted. Roaming charges are very expensive. During that time, he tapped my phone and hired a private investigator. He even tracked every single minute of my internet browsing history. He brought things from my past and said I lied to him, which I did not... it was just in the past and totally irrelevant...
Anyways, we broke up after that trip. He made me look like a really bad person and made assumptions because of things that happened to me 10+ years ago. This scene was very similar....
I’m sorry, you deserve so much better. Money is nothing in the end, and people let it get to their heads. Smh. Hope you’re happy and doing much better now!
I'm sorry this happened to you.

Where you find out the most problematic person isn't Eleanor but the grandmother who already bullied Eleanor her whole life.
Turns out Rachel is kinda richer than them.. Or so I've read in the second book
uhm... im just at chapter 7 in the first book
Second book? Meaning second film? I can’t wait to see the look on Mum & grandmas face. They’d be sucking up to her
Helz well it’s a boom triology but I’m not sure if there’s gonna be a second film! go read the books tho they changed some bits in the film and the book gives different perspectives:)
how tf is that even possible
God. What garbage of a fairy tale. Rachel is also rich? Okay everybody’s rich in CRA.
Im an asian and i admit we had this kind of toxic culture especially when you came from a wealthy family. Your family forbids you for marrying the one that you like if that person has a bad image past and they will do everything just to make you two apart. I mean if you really love that person, you wouldn't mind about his/her history as long as he/she didn't make it happen again. We all live with shameful past but that doesn't mean we cant live a beautiful life.
Its not toxic. Its logical if you're that rich.
we all saw how Megan (Markle) got drug through the mud for her past, so did Kate for a while until the press found a new target. same thing for many rich wealthy families , its about connections, power and prestige so they send their kids to school together in hopes they will make friends/date other powerful people and network naturally being in the same environment.
From a western perspective, this aspect of Asian culture is very toxic. However, I do find the cultural importance of the family unit interesting. It is expected that one sacrifice for the good of the family in Asian cultures. From their perspective, our emphasis on individual rights and freedoms must seem incredibly selfish and immoral.
Of course you wouldn't mind the history of your significant other but it could bring a bad name to the family.
In these families, you don't just marry the person. You marry into their family so your reputation or whatever you did in the past will affect them too
It matters not what family someone is born to, what matters is who they grow up to be

/*
it's different in asia
I see now that the circumstances of one's birth are irrelevant; it is what you do with the gift of life that determines who you are. -Mewtwo
Easier said than done. These elite families don't care
What a horrible grandmother. She blames the mom for Nick going after Rachel when he is already a grown man. The mom did her due diligence of background check. I can understand where she's coming from. She did her best to protect her son and then still get blamed in the end, like wtf.
Unfortunately, it's typical cultural old world mentality to have someone who is older to blame the younger person because I think elders like to think they know better and have every right to scold the child.
It's Eleanor's fault.
*She ACTUALLY gave her son up to her mother-in-law, to raise him. Knowing good and well that she was capable to do the same.*
She deserved Ah Ma's criticism
The mom only did it to get on grandma’s good side and didn’t do it because she actually cared for her son so the mom and grandma can go f-off.
@@majestical15No its not. Eleanor tried her best to get into ah-ma's good side but was never accepted. And Ah-ma is the most important and influential person in the family so it is disadvantageous to get on her bad side.
Eleanor didn't want Nick to get on Ah-ma's bad side and suffer like she did so she made sure that he spent as much time with her as possible. It was for his own good.
So she was actually smart for that
It must have hurt finding out something very valuable for u from other people and pinning it on you. It's like I've been betrayed and lied too by one of the most important person in your life.
"I forbid it!"
Well luckily, Nick's grandma has absolutely no say in how Nick lives in his life.
He was pretty ready to just walk out on his family.
In Asian culture
Yeah they do 😂
@@AstarionWifey Luckily Nick can just fly back to NY and largely forget the whole thing.
Ah. The good ol debate of Western individualism and Eastern family collectivism.
in the book he misses out on grandmas inheritance being the favorite and she is unbelievably absurdly rich
The worst kind of a family. It's not always the money that will make you happy. Especially if your family members will know what is true happiness with someone who gives them genuine peace and happiness.
Wealth isn't their primary goal in the context of this clip. They're wealthy enough that such matters no longer become a priority. It's status and reputation. Rachel comes from a scandalous background, and by bringing her into the family, it will reflect badly on themselves. Need I remind that Eleanor also came from a relatively poorer family, yet she's more or less the matriarch now.
@@Mica_T scandalous background? It wasn't even her fault. Not to mention half the story wasnt even true because that guy was abusive and he wasnt even actually her father. They're that rich but they couldn't find an investigator good enough to get the story right? Not to mention I dont even see how they could comprehend her story as being bad. She raised herself up from a bad situation and went to Stanford and became a professor. She's independent, intelligent, kind, a hard worker, etc. It's funny because bringing her into their family could actually reflect well on them if they played it right. Bringing an Inteligent very successful and self made woman into their home. But I digress, she was still just a foreigner to them, plus many other cultural differences not to mention their shallowness and narrow mindedness.
I'm glad the movie portrayed how grandma treats Nick's mom very badly She suddenly blame Eleanor when things go wrong like Damn grandma
i don't know if it's just me but i kinda see it coming that the grandma is mean too. In the scene when they were making dumplings, she told Eleanor that the dumplings don't look good and that Eleanor has lost her touch after observing Rachel's face (which btw, looks like she is buying some cabbage) and after that, Astrid looked at Rachel with concern
This is a normal thing in India where the boy's parents investigators to find out about the girl.
Edit- I don't endorse it, it's disrespectful and toxic. Just because it's normal doesn't mean it should be accepted.
Yass dont know why westerners are freaking out , some people are assuming that this just for rich people. But in asia its even for poor people

I think everything in here makes sense but I don’t think the grandma should pressure the mum like that. That’s why she’s so mean to Rachel
The grandma never really liked the mom. And yes this happens a lot.

Monster-In-Law, more like. The kind you'd make concrete boots for.
There's a reason why real royalty, like Princess Intan, didn't want to waste their time dealing with Nick's mom & grandma, and it wasn't due to their lack of brown-nosing.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned from news about the British royal family, it’s that Princess Intan was probably the Astrid of her family.
@@kiwimusume which explains why she was so glad to finally meet Rachel - she was probably terribly lonely, growing up the way she did, and living the way she does with the status she holds. At least Astrid had Nick her whole life.
During the Mahjong scene Nick’s mother told Rachel that Rachel is a western and as such she doesn’t know what it’s like to build something that lasts. The Young Family may have a family name and money but that’s it.
The Youngs failed to build the things that truly matter. When Rachel turns down Nick’s proposal he’ll think back to this moment as the moment his family revealed their true color. Their disdain for Rachel’s background destroyed Nick’s happiness. Nick’s father wasn’t shown once in the movie yet he was off on some business trip. The Youngs couldn’t build a happy family and no amount of money could repair the damage they’ve done.
“Put family before yourself” to them is more like “put your wealth that’s been handed over to you by your ancestors before yourself”. And then they get petty and angry when their heir retaliates against them. Damn.
Rachel's acting is amazing.
I hate the fact that Nick never tell Rachel of his family. How fierce, cruel and rude they are!
And him being so clueless about it too.
Maybe that's why he wants to have a shot at his own happiness.
I honest to god gasped when the grandma rejected her and all the way after the revelation about her dad.
Like, until the end of the movie I was shook. Actually, from the very beggining of the movie I was shook...
As someone who was proposed to by a guy with a controlling and similarish mother, I can tell you this movie stays as a Hollywood fantasy. Nick and Rachel ending up together in a dreamy ending is exactly that - a dream. The things that happened in this movie would never have lead to a marriage in the real world. It would have left the couple feeling crushed, no matter how much they loved each other 😓
Agree if the mom does not like you good luck they will always pick their mom.
Here’s an interesting fact about the Grandmother, she was the Empress Dowager Cixi in the movie “The Last Emperor”. Good idea to cast her considering they’re both vile and morally repulsive characters.
1:13 Oh Eleanor,
You did all of that and she *STILL* doesn't like you
They claim that they just want to maintain their family reputation, but maybe it is their ego talking, treating children like assets, not human-beings
for them children ARE assets, not talking to them like their assets
Rich people's 💩 still stinks just like everyone else's.
Eleanor being a protective & wanting the best for her son is understandably expected of a mother. Due to this expected behavior a lot of people easily overlooks Eleanor's subtle jealousy of Rachel receiving positive reviews from the grandmother. When Eleanor first met Rachel she was very nonchalant & easy going with her disapproval of Rachel. However, once Eleanor saw the grandmother's positive response to Rachel, that is when venom poured out of every conversation she had Rachel. When Eleanor revealed the info the PI found, it was to put Rachel in a negative light in the grandmother's eyes. It had nothing to with protecting Nick or family reputation.
0:18 just the idea of Nick, an asian, raising his voice to his rich, asian, head of family grandmother is.... oh my
I wish Nick would have said something like: "Why do you think Rachel told you that her Father is dead, because she really thought he was, because maybe her mother never told her the truth and you two just spit this in her face not even thinking for a second about why Rachel didn't tell us this and breaking her heart with it. You should be ashamed about yourselfs",
to his Grandma and Mother. I really would have enjoyed that.
Well Nick didn't know Rachel's mom had lied to her either. 🤷

Wow... The grandmother and the mother should've at least confronted Rachel in private and not in front of their son/grandson. Embarrassing a person publicly should be avoided.
I don't think this is consider public...its just four of them around...
I think it would have been worse had Rachel been alone with them, at least Nick was there for some vague sense of support.
That was a really callous thing to do. It was obvious she didn't know. So for her to find out like that... I would've left too!
In Asian culture family is always first
Not anymore if a family does you badly then leaving is another choice.
Poor Nick, anyone hires a private detective to get into my family's private life, I'd be pissed too.
One of the things about this scene is the actors talking over each other's lines. That's what happens in real life. It really screams fake when in emotional scenes the actors take turns saying their lines.

clash of western and eastern ideals. In asia your family reputation is what builds you into your adult life. In the west you build yourself up regardless of your background
I wish they showed a re enactment of Rachel's mom with her biological dad.. That wld have been apt scene
It's funny for me that the Grandma used to play "Hey Girl" in Have Gun, Will Travel.
as an asian yes, we dig into someone's background before getting married to them, we don't want someone that has a bad reputation in our family
This PROVES money does NOT buy class, intelligence, or compassion. Money ignores all morality because MONEY doesn't know where it comes from. It just is, so like any tool, it can be used for good or evil. I think we all know how it is being used here.
The irony is that later in the books they find out Grandma Shang Su Yi had an affair with a Thai Prince and had a daughter ..... So grandma is being a bit of a hypocrite :D

Eleanor and Rachel are my favorite characters in Crazy Rich Asians... Michelle Yeoh and Constance Wu are my favorite actresses... ❤️💚💙
It doesn't matter what kind of reputation a family has. God will judge a person's heart.
This is why it is important to allow God to lead and not envious hearts. God bless. ❤
This is actually a trait that Asian families possess, it's saddening
we love how the asians sound more British than me but I was born in Britain
Well Henry Goulding is half British in real life.
In asia, a lot of people think that european things are higher quality and parents push their kids to get their education overseas. So that makes sense to me, even if it weren't an actual part of the movie.
This movie doesn't make any sense. They say they worry about families, but in reality they worry a stranger will steal all their money.
I like how the grandmother blames Eleanor. It’s what sold for me the idea that Eleanor was critical and suspicious of Rachel because she was likely treated the same. She believes Nick is making a poor choice and going down a path of misery. Makes the pay off later more satisfying when she relents and gives her blessing. It’s almost like she has broken free from the generational trauma imposed by the family matriarch.
The story feels very timeless and classic while the style of the movie makes it beautifully modern.
I find it funny that her "shameful past" isnt even rachel's fault or actions whatsoever. She was literally born like that. Like you trying to shame me for something my mother did before my birth? You think i could control that or something? What do you want exactly?
Seeing the way the Grandmama acted, it shows how this isn't just he mother, it's a cycle, and in an odd way, the mother was wanting to spare her FROM that cycle.
Not really. Rachel can marry Nick and choose to break the cycle. Nick's mother didn't want to "save her", she was just being a bad person
The funny thing is in the scene as well, Nick’s mom was trying to gain points back with his grandmother only for her to lose more points in the end. Very telling what “revenge” or wanting to be “up there” by tearing someone down can do to you too
The rich society has one of the most colorful aka dirtiest background ever .. normal people just don’t tell it to their face bcus they are rich
Normal Fam: I want to know more about you.
Asian Rich Fam: I hired a private investigator to look at her past.
Some cultures seem exhausting to be part of with all the standards and expectations. But you wouldn't think so if you've lived through it. Still kinda sad in some aspect though.
If she was my son girlfriend I will to make her be apart of my family because I see that she truly love my son 🥰 and as a mother I know it’s gonna be hard to let go but at the end of the day u have u to let go
@Stepfather Hater lol but u have to let go to make her be happy u see if the man hurt her now then that’s a different thing but is she truly happy with the Man Make she be with him and u can’t run ur mother life same way she can’t run ur life either
@Stepfather Hater I get what ur saying but imagine ur parents get divorced or ur father died (god please don’t let that happen) so she is not to move on with her life if she find an other man out there it’s ok because she is happy and I didn’t say she is loving the man more than u I’m not saying that she will u love more than any man that come through her life but u can’t control her life her life is her life I will my mother to be happy if she moved on but I have to check the man to see if he not a psycho but I can’t control her life same way she can’t control man I date who I wanna date
The reality in most Asian family. Even in my own family. As the eldest son i was constantly arguing with my mom to give a chance to my sister in law to prove herself as she thinks she is not a worthy wife for my brother. It does happens that parents still decides in their childrens married life.
Bit of advice for your brother. Tell him to stop caring what people think. If he truly loves your sister-in-law then it shouldn't matter.
I feel proud of myself for understanding everything Grandma said
I imagine her mother told her the original one. About her father being dead before she was born.
For some weird reason, I always think of these scene as Darth Vader (Eleanor Young) and Palpatine (the Grandmother) forcing luke skywalker to choose the Dark Side!
Lisa Lu, who is the grandmom, was Mrs Xiao is Dim Sum Funerals with Bai Ling, Talia Shire and Kelly Hu. She is now 95 yo, almost 96 in next January, from Beijing!
The fact that Nick's mom do this to gain validation from her mother in law is not it. She knows that she's more than her mom's past
She's 90-91 years old in this scene
Thats messed up
You know, if nick didn’t go to the plane and propose with rachel. It’s possible that he’ll end up marrying a rich woman and at first (before, getting married, and first year of marriage) they’ll be happy... but he’ll end up being unhappy in the relationship as Astrid with her husband... or worse, it will end up like Prince Charles and Princess diana’s relationship..
It's interesting being, it really seems that Rachael did not know that his Father did not pass away or anything. Being the assumption would be Rachael's mother telling her that. So when they hired a private investigator and then told her the reality, Rachael was in shock because who wouldn't know about their father being alive and well and say that he was dead years ago.
Interesting thing is , in the books Rachel finds out her birth father later on became a super wealthy powerful man who married someone else and Eleanor finally learns to accept her , but causes a rift between nick and his mother after she and Grandma ruin his proposal
Now if this was Jessica from Fresh off the boat instead....she would pick a fight instead
My father died when I was 20. My mother met a guy who has a wealthy family in the Phillippines. Like Chinese, Filipinos who are wealthy will gossip. They called my mother a gold digger. Not knowing my step father is so deep in dept that his wealthy family doesn't financially support him. My mother has legally excluded herself from his inheritance if he was to past away. I grew up hating my father's siblings, and now I hate my step father's siblings. I can fully relate to this
This scene is a perfect example how it is actually women who bring down other women. Here we have an accomplished professor (Rachel), being insulted by another woman (who dropped out of college to get married) just because her "background" was not good enough for her. Then you see another woman (Ah Ma) blaming everything on Eleanor. Women pretend that men are the problem. But in reality they just can't stand to see other women more successful or at peace with themselves.
and of courseeee like any other conservative asian family the male is never to be blamed. the mom blames rachel and the grandma blames the mom 🙃🙃
Rachel didn’t know the details of her dad’s situation this was so unfair ungodly and disrespectful
Is no one going to talk about how messed up it is realizing that your dad is out there somewhere and isn’t dead
