By riding behind the motorized cycle, the racers don't have have to contend with as much wind resistance and can go faster with the same amount of effort. That said, they are still putting out massive power and consequently going extremely fast for the distance they are covering.
Racers can signal for their pacing partner to increase speed, cavendish "nods" his head several times to increase the pace. The riders need to be very focused on not losing the draft when accelerating, as the penalty for falling just a little behind is massive at these speeds.
The derny race is definitely a strange beast, and tends to run very differently from other events. Because the racers don't need to rely on their competitors to get a draft, there is rarely a sprint finish, and instead the race is won by whoever can sustain their power for the entire duration.
In the video, which only starts at the very end of the race, Cavendish is able to lay down the hammer on the last lap and catch up to Ewan who is beginning to slow before the finish.
@@Penalist thanx
What is the max speed they can catch?
@@wakeawaken430 Behind these light motorbikes, say 45 miles per hour, but that would be in the final lap.
@@Penalist impressive
@@wakeawaken430 They are top-level professionals, so in some way it has to be, otherwise no-one would be interested in paying to see them do it. But the speed is one thing; the combination of pacer/rider getting the most out of the riders heart/lungs/legs, at the right moments is the second, perhaps more interesting thing.
My name is Giovanni giorgo but everybody calls me *GIORGIO*
It helps that his Durney rider is the widest guy there, so the draft is nice.
Cabendish 🔥🚀🔥
Cav, Averaging 150-160+ Bpm, Caleb's, heart is so close to an explosion 🤣🤣🤣
That's not really high. Most runners including myself run 2+ hours at that heart rate. My max rate during a run has actually been 210.

No roller behind the moto?
RUclipsr recommendation is at it again
wtf is this?
a moped secures the slipstream?
is it not possible without the slipstream?
why number 2 cheers?
number 5 won the race!
If i m not worng 5 need 1 more lap to win
the pace is much higher and it's team work. you shout allez allez to go faster and o to stop. it's a bit like asking why horses in horsracing? can't they just run. yea they can but this is a different kind of race.
Because its bollocks
why are motor bikes blocking?
They are not blocking, they are creating draft.
Never mind the expensive fixi I want a pacer bike there the bomb
Amazing! And did so without bib shorts.
wdym?
Looking at the heart rates Ewan was giving 100% just trying to hold on and Cav had some left in the tank.
Cycling at an average of 60km/h at 150bpm more or less, is absolutely inhuman.
He does 80 km/h sometimes
So the guy on the motorcycle / bicycle thing really wins every time? .. 😂
3 generations in action

Who else is here now that Caleb ewan is one of the best sprinters in the world?
Not really! He doesn’t have the top end speed like the greats

Love to try that motorized bike
Love the Muc-Off logo on Cav's jersey - so freakin' cheeky!!!
The only feasible application for this was at the end of 280km sportive in the french alps which allows you to sail past 100's of riders hitting the wall, i should know but then.. he drove off and left me XD
Appropriate Cavendish is in a green jersey
Wish there was the WATTS showing too, with a Power-Meter
I love the helmet of the motorpilot of Cav
I'm surprised they haven't used ebikes on the pace bikes. Sun Run or something like that would get good public exposure!

don’t think adding pace bikes does anything for the sport....but if you continue using pacebikes, why not make them electric?
They have been using petrol engined bikes since the 1930s, in the last years electrically powered bikes have indeed been introduced.

Could you imagine the slipstream a 400lb derny pacer would give you. You'd think they'd all be the biggest fattest guys you could find who could still ride a bike.

I believe this type of racing was at it's height when bike racing profit as a sport was based on betting.
Only the keirin events in Japan are, the Sixdays-events nor derny-racing never were.
