  • In 1973, John DeLorean was most likely going to be the next president of General Motors, when he turned his back on his $650,000 a year job and focused on a grander dream... to build his own car company (the first new American car company since 1925). In 1978, DeLorean built the most advanced auto factory in the world in under 18 months, from the ground up in a small suburb of Belfast, Northern Ireland. When British Television (ATV) asked us to make a film about John DeLorean, out great automotive adventure began, an adventure that took us to the auto show in Geneva, where DeLorean and his wife showed his new car for the first time to the excited world of car buffs; to car designer Guigiaro's huge studio-factory in Italy where full-size wooden replica's of Lotuses, Ferraris and DeLoreans were locked away in secret vaults; and to DeLorean's Belfast assembly plant which was financed by the British government in an attempt to ease tensions between Protestants and Catholics by bringing them together in a working environment. Here workers from both sides built the car that became the legend of the movie "Back to the Future". When you see how close it all came to working you wonder how it could go so wrong.

in 1980s, an executive flying in a private jet rang huge alarm bells, especially as it was start-up. Lotus seemed to made all the money. DMC may have worked with Mazda. The car plants in Wales proves the concept that failed in NI.

Colin Chapman only avoided prosecution by dying. delorean by fleeing the UK and never returning. The money " Paid to Lotus " was identified as being in a Swiss bank account under a ghost company owner by Chapman and delorean. I believe that was about 8 millions pounds and was part of the relatively small amount recovered.

Just looking at the other cars driving on European and American roads.
At the time a DeLorean must have been seen as a spaceship especially in Northern Ireland.
And now being in 2021 we must agree that time was kind to its looks.
You really can safely travel on into the future without shame.

What planet are you on ? delorean was a disgusting, despicable criminal. He swindled friend and foe. He defrauded old ladies and the entire Irish public as well as General Motors. God knows who else. Senior board members of GM and delorean motor company openly state that he was a crook. The evidence is all there anyway. The only decent thing he ever did was to die. About 2 minutes before it was announced that the Belfast managing director was moving on, I thought they need to get rid of that guy. He was out of his depth or didn't have the organizational strategy and work force to get things done in a timely manner and that was sorely needed.

Yeeee-ahhh.....well....no, not exactly. He was ousted at GM because his illegal side deals weren’t discreet enough; he was blatant about it. That, and he spent more time NOT AT WORK than in his office, instead running around investing in MLB teams, getting photographed with Hollywod types, and turning himself into a fashionista. Where it all went south was his decision to compete with GM. When he announced his DMC-12 he LOST HIS BONUS as well as his severance pay. THAT was stupid. He needed that money to set him up for life. Instead he spent the next 30-years chasing it - trying to replace that $650,000/year salary... and died broke at Parsons Village condominium complex in Morristown, NJ. It certainly is a terrific cautionary tale.

The dreaded union rep with his own personal agenda and hatred of management, my grandad and his friends hated these types for causing nothing but trouble and disruption…. 7% pay rise willingly offered on the table and the union rep rejected it, he disguised it as a motion from the shop floor but that was bull 💩, the alternatives being vast unemployment and accelerating the closure of the factory…. Government and it's economic fascist industry partners has destroyed every individual of competition who has stepped up to the plate of free enterprise to compete and provide opportunity in the auto industry since WW2. Tucker, another guy who tried to make a sports car in Canada, and Delorean, are three that I know of. But we give Japan 8 billion to rebuild, and Honda was "allowed" to create a manufacturing dynasty after WW2 while our elected congress destroyed Tucker. Delorean did not know we lost WW2.
