How Power Memory Seats Work

  • Here's a look inside a power memory seat and how it works on your car.
    The seat mechanism consists of 4 adjustments: fore and aft, front tilt, rear height, and recline. These are all powered by an electric motor connected to a spiral gear. The gear-set provides a torque multiplication as well as precise positioning of the seat.
    The memory function is held in a seat control ECU, under the seat. A hall effect encoder is connected on either end of the motor to count the number of turns relative to the seat's current position. This is stored in the seat control ECU. When activated, the seat control ECU will turn the motor until the number of turns has elapsed, bringing the seat back to the perfect position for the driver.
    The seat also contains an airbag attached to the seat frame. The cushion is comprised of injected molded foam, with embedded wires to which hog rings attached the upholstery. A heating pad provides warmth for the heated seat function.
    The seat torn down in this video was from a 1999 Lexus ES300.

    very true on the leather seats not being all leather.
    In 2013 when I bought a new Honda Accord I learned through a forum that the seats weren't full leather. In the window sticker and website Honda did fine print 'Leather Trimmed' so they didn't necessarily lie. Other manufacturers might just say 'Leatherette' which is also a misleading word for vinyl.

    • @fun_ghoul
      @fun_ghoul 4 года назад +2

      Lots of furniture also just uses leather on the "wear areas", to keep cost down. Of course, the whole seat could be a wear area depending on the driver...

    • @speedkar99
      @speedkar99  4 года назад +2

      Yes it's misleading. As you see in the video it doesn't last as long as leather either. I hope modern vehicles use better quality fake leather that doesn't wear as fast

    • @speedkar99
      @speedkar99  4 года назад +1

      Thanks I found the diagram online. The encoder is just attached to the motor drive, it's honestly not that much more to it over a regular power chair. I wish I had exploded the airbag thru the leather to see how it tears.
