How Power Memory Seats Work

- Here's a look inside a power memory seat and how it works on your car.
The seat mechanism consists of 4 adjustments: fore and aft, front tilt, rear height, and recline. These are all powered by an electric motor connected to a spiral gear. The gear-set provides a torque multiplication as well as precise positioning of the seat.
The memory function is held in a seat control ECU, under the seat. A hall effect encoder is connected on either end of the motor to count the number of turns relative to the seat's current position. This is stored in the seat control ECU. When activated, the seat control ECU will turn the motor until the number of turns has elapsed, bringing the seat back to the perfect position for the driver.
The seat also contains an airbag attached to the seat frame. The cushion is comprised of injected molded foam, with embedded wires to which hog rings attached the upholstery. A heating pad provides warmth for the heated seat function.
The seat torn down in this video was from a 1999 Lexus ES300.

Thanks for the breakdown, just what I needed to modify my couch for TV watching - self isolation project. Stay safe!
A memory couch would be cool!
Thank you for an excellent and informative video!
Always wondered how the mechanism worked... Great to see the details and mechanism behind the working... Nice work👍
Awesome breakdown and explanation.
Love your videos...!!
Glad you enjoyed my teardown
nice informative video as always. i never know that car seats have such huge number of components with various mechanisms. thumbs up.
Yeah they are quite complex, even a 21 year old seat like this one
Thank you for the seat tear down...😎
Superb! Thanks a lot!
My height adjustment in Disco 4 engages for a sec and stops right away, so I have to switch the button a dozen times to make an adjustment. Now I have ideas where to look at!
Thanks. Very informative.
Very informative as always.
Thanks
Brother you are awesome! Never stop uploading videos, you're a legend.
Thanks
Check out my latest video
He definitely is
awesome education. Thank you regards
Yo best video ever!!! This helped me a lot!!! Thanx man
Glad it helped. Now your turn
Nice mecanism, awsome video. Congratulations from Brazil!
Thanks glad you learned something!
Excellent explanation.
Thanks
you are superb
every clip that you made is extraordinary !
Thanks
You are dope!! Thanks for the tutorial and thank goodness for your brother’s sock and toothbrush for the help! Lol!!!
Glad you appreciate it
These ES300 seats were extremely comfortable back in the day.
They sure are !!
Man, that socks was pristine.
You could use it to filter coffee.
Haha
Facinating video Speedkar99 ✌🇬🇧
Thanks
very true on the leather seats not being all leather.
In 2013 when I bought a new Honda Accord I learned through a forum that the seats weren't full leather. In the window sticker and website Honda did fine print 'Leather Trimmed' so they didn't necessarily lie. Other manufacturers might just say 'Leatherette' which is also a misleading word for vinyl.
Lots of furniture also just uses leather on the "wear areas", to keep cost down. Of course, the whole seat could be a wear area depending on the driver...
Yes it's misleading. As you see in the video it doesn't last as long as leather either. I hope modern vehicles use better quality fake leather that doesn't wear as fast
Nice video, the encoder makes the seat assembly even more complex. I was expecting the airbag explosion. Where do you get the wiring diagram?
Thanks I found the diagram online. The encoder is just attached to the motor drive, it's honestly not that much more to it over a regular power chair. I wish I had exploded the airbag thru the leather to see how it tears.
Nice video, are you able to demonstrate Mercedes w204 memory seat as well?
A Benz would be nice if I had one
I bought seats thst seem to go back to canbus, I've hooked them all up apart from the canbus but they won't move, am i wasting my time or is there a way to trick them into working you think? Thanks for great videos.
I am pretty sure the seats in the Space Shuttle didn't have this much technology.
Technology didn't power the Space Shuttle. Lighting tonnes of volatile fuels on fire did.
I don't think seats are the priority when designing a space shuttle lol
speedkar99 if I am gonna risk my ass by sitting on top of a giant rocket it damn well better have a gloriously comfortable seat.
Is there anything I can do to make my seat recline further?
You've stumbled across the reason upholsterers make a lot of money.
Yep upholstery work is not easy
@@speedkar99 It honestly looks interesting and fun, but I'm not really artsy enough for it. I couldn't cut a straight line with scissors to save my life, let alone a smooth curve!
Kindly help me out how are you powering it?
swirly gear :) Nice. We call them worm gears, but I see why you'd call it tha.
Who is "we"? Pretty sure dude is an engineer...
Lol I just made that up as I went along. I learn as you guys learn, I didn't see a technical term for it in the repair manual
A Lexus GS S190 is what I first see in the video I immediately press 'Like'(and because of that toothbrush :D ). BTW, what engine does the GS have? Mine is the 'least reliable' one, the 3GR-FSE.
Mine is the 2GR FSE
I heard the 06 models weren't that good, that's why I got my 07, plus it has more power
@@speedkar99 Yep, exactly the same thing that I know. But here(in Bulgaria) it is hard to find one with the 3.5l engine. Thank you for the clips, love them :) .
Hello dear brother I'm big fan of your channel . . And please show me colling system seat of new model.same like that seat . . I'm watching your videos last one and half years before Please please please . Your all videos is very good .
Glad you enjoy them. New videos come out on Mondays
@@speedkar99 but brother. I want to see genion colling system in car driving seat. . For example Mercedes. .BMW. luxus.
How does it know the position after a power down ?.
What do you do with the parts after you break it up to show us how it works?
Upcycle the good parts (see my latest video) or scrap them if useless
The Mastercraft ratchet and sockets, the Jobmate grinder and the Motomaster battery...why isn't Crappy Tire sponsoring you???
Or, y'know, Oral-B.
That's a good idea. I didn't realize how much influence their cheap tools have on me.
The grinder is Skill not jobmate, but I did buy it from Canadian tire 3 years ago. Best investment ever.
@@speedkar99 I swear, I was initially gonna say "Skil"! A buddy had one a long time ago, and along with a cheap old welder, he pretty much rebuilt his Mustang.
How do I wire the seats to eliminate the any communication to the computer and memmory module?..I want to put some kia seats in my chevy truck build and want all functions to work
Ohh yes... that's was good. Now put all the things back together as it was earlier... Now..
No thanks 🤕
This Seat is from which Car ?. Interesting mechanism!!
Lexus ES 300
WOW
Wow
Hey mate , what power wires and grou d do you need to test on the bench like you are I trying to get my driver's side mazda gh to work , passenger side was easy to fork out less wiring , compared to the driverside .
You'll need a wiring diagram but usually it's the thicker two wires.
👍
Any plans for more mechanical review videos?
Yes I really want to get back to mechanical reviews, but with the situation out there now it's not wise for me to handling other people's cars. I'm gonna wait a month or two until things quiet down so for now video content will be on things I can do in house.
Can we reuse OEM engine start-stop switch for other applications? e.g. lawnmower. I'm curious if that is simple switch or also contains signal decoder
The switch is momentary. The transponder unit should be in a ring behind that
speedkar99 nice to know, I'll figure out to make a circuit to solve the problem it being momentary switch. At least the switch alone is usable. 👌
How did you set the airbag off ??
12V to the two wires coming off of it is all it takes!
I'm going to work in an airbag video in the coming weeks
great vedio and it's very important for me, But I found some difficulties to understand you please speak slowly.
Thanks
I try to condense information so it's not boring
I play on 0.75x speed sometimes
I bought used seats from someone. The driver seems to have memory but my car does not have this function. Can I bypass? I got power ran to passenger seat but driver seat nothing is working. I’m guessing it has to do with memory seat. Any thoughts?
How much does it cost to replace a power seat, as opposed to a manual seat?
As much as the seat costs... A used one is $35 vs $70?
@@speedkar99 That's it? Huh. I mistakenly thought each seat would be worth hundreds of dollars.
the "swirly gear" is called a lead screw BTW :)
Thanks
Am happy l have Volkswagen V6
WTF has that gotta do with anything?
_"Am happy l have Volkswagen V6"_
First time I've ever heard anyone say this, lol.
VR6?
@@speedkar99 nope 2001 salon V6
hi there, how ca i contact you personally? thx

You said that the yellow wire was for the airbag. is that color coding standard? My '97 Eurovan has a yellow wire for the airbag in the steering wheel. Coincidence? Oh, your brother called. He wants his sock and toothbrush back.
Yes yellow for airbag
It's your brother's toothbrush right?
that's a complicated chair, no wonder luxury seats are so expensive
Yeah they sure have quite alot going on underneath
Rude neighbour at 3:57! lol
Yeah the neighbors dog
So the entire seat is lead screw 😂😂😂😂😂
Yes
Do you have Corona? I mean in junkyard
No
How a pit bike carburetor works
I saw a penny 10 minutes ago. I keep some in my plant pots to prevent things other than plants growing, though I'm not certain it's enough copper to matter. Defo don't do this with copper-plated pennies (1997 and later), tho! Eww.
Oh i never see ghis type of memory chair here in Malaysia year 2020
Most cars here have them now
i wish they had invested this much resources in researching virology.
great explanation though.
Haha good one
Why would anyone want to buy a car with all these electricals just to drive around the block, beats me.
So that your wife can't keep adjusting the seat on you
Power seats are the fucking BANE of a junkyard picker's existence. Your choices are to smuggle a 12V battery, remove the seat for clearance or find another car. Ouf.

You don’t need real leather to be durable you just need quality faux or cork leather we’ve come far enough in material science to not need the skin of an animal plus good fake leather last longer
Mercedes uses something made from coconut fibers and there seat are extremely durable I rarely see a gl450 with torn seats
Well in this case the vinyl didn't last as long as the leather at all
