- In this video we are preparing acetic anhydride (Ac2O) from acetyl chloride (AcCl) and anhydrous sodium sulfate. This video is for demonstration purposes only.
In many places acetic anhydride is illegal. Make sure to check the laws in your country yourself before even thinking about this synthesis.

@@waltersobchak7275 Well as a professional organic chemist for over 30 years just looking out for his safety. Fortunately never had too "synthesize" acetic anhydride since it is cheaply commercially available.

You can make it with a.mixture of sodium acetate and a little bit of sodium pyrophosphate to start the reaction. Heat to decomposition, you get sodium phosphate, acetic anhydride, and sodium carbonate as the reaction proceeds.

Very nicely executed classic synthesis! Subscribed to Your channel. I think RUclips really makes young people interested in chemistry again. Except for the drug idiots it seems like practical lab skills have been on the decline, which I do not think is good for science. It is sort of sad that many basic lab chemicals are restricted nowadays. Personally I do not believe it has any effect on the targeted illegal audience. It is just something easy to show for politicians instead of dealing with druggies and terrorists properly. I have had a lab since the age of 12 and many of my successful colleagues have the same background.

I don't really wanna get political on a chemistry channel, but really, what would be "the proper" way to deal with "druggies and terrorists"?
This is the only good preparation of acetic anhydride I`ve found on RUclips, but the acetyl chloride is almost impossible to get hold of in both my country and probably many others. I`ve tried to chlorinate white phosphorus to form phosphorus trichloride just to be able to make acetyl and benzoyl chloride, but it`s way too much work for a few drops of anhydride. I might have to take a trip to Germany to go shopping for chemicals it seems.
Another viable but highly dangerous route is the ketene process. Unless you know what you are doing and don’t have appropriate safety precautions and PPE you should stay far away from it.
@@THYZOID Yeah, I think Dug`s Lab has one on the ketene process. That`s some nasty fumes you`re generating while heating the acetone though. Setup needs to be close to perfect too. It`s not exactly a project for the novice chemist. Chlorine gases are a little bit easier to handle then running a ketene lamp.
What temperature should not be exceeded when adding acetyl chloride to sodium acetate?
You ideally add the acetyl chloride before beginning to heat. You want AcCl and acetate to react before heating as you would boil off unreacted acetyl chloride otherwise.
I didn't mean that / My question was when I added acetyl chloride to sodium acetate in the ice bath / What temperature should I not exceed during the addition?

that stuff is labeld as "very combustive"...im not a chemist, but what does this actually mean, what does it take to set this stuff off in a blaze or an explosion?
no.... to put it into perspective it will burn even less than ethanol or gasoline. getting it to ignite is not as easy as holding a lighter on it as well.

@@THYZOID Patents aren't always trustworthy though, or they leave out important details. There are also patents that claim Ac2O production from hexametaphosphate and AcOH but nobody seems to have get it to work at this point.

Yes but the ketone route is extremely dangerous

Why is the amount of acetic anhydride(39ml) is more than that acetyl chloride?
You get another acetate from the sodium acetate and thus the volume will increase. From 1 mol of acetyl chloride (AcCl) you can get 1 mol of acetic acid when it reacts with water. When acetic anhydride (Ac2O) reacts with water you get two mol of acetic acid for each mol of anhydride

What will be the problem if we use sodium acetate trihtdrate instead of anhydrous sodium acetate. Please reply
you use the trihydrate = you don´t get anything or a REALLY bad yield. You do NOT want water to be present. If you use the trihydrate you will need 4 times as much AcCl and 3 out of 4 mol are just wasted creating acetic acid and HCl without any acetic anhydride. just dehydrate the trihydrate before using it by putting it in an oven at 250°C for two hours

@@THYZOID actually I couldn't remove the flask at once and somehow a few drops got mixed with Ac2O pdt. What's that yellow material by the way. Is it charred Ac2O with or something else. Because by smell it's similar to the product.

you heat until no more liquid comes over. don´t overheat the solid stuff though

Btw, hot oil bath is much better than heating mantle for this experiment. More acetic anhydride will be collected and there will be no tar formation

Acetyl chloride isn’t suited for every reaction. Besides that it is a burden to work with

Das denke ich mir auch aber es gibt darauf derzeit keinerlei Beschränkungen da es nur mit brennbar, ätzend und Achtung deklariert ist. Ich finde da gehört aufgrund der massiven HCl Entwicklung noch ein Totenkopf drauf. Gefährliches Zeug wenn jemand nicht weiß womit er gerade hantiert.
@@THYZOID Ich hätte mir jetzt weniger Sorgen wegen des Stoffes an sich gemacht, da hab ich an der Uni schon mit weitaus schlimmeren gearbeitet. Ich Frage mich eher ob man da nicht auf irgendwelche listen kommt. Ich mein, es wäre ja durchaus eine alternative für Essigsäureanhydrid bzw ein Vorläufer davon, und Essigsäureanhydrid ist ja nicht ohne Grund schwer zugänglich.
Dafür kommt man bestimmt auf listen aber da ich sowieso nichts verbotenes herstelle und aufgrund meiner RUclips Videos den Verwendungszweck und Verbleib nachweisen kann mache ich mir da eher weniger sorgen.

@@mcpr5971Mostly to convert homebake morphine (from codeine) to heroin. It's a simple process so I suppose it makes sense to restrict access...so more people die from fentanyl overdose.

i will still run a ketene lamp eventually. But yeah. If you can get AcCl this method here is convenient.

You can pour it in directly but make sure to cool the flask sufficiently so it doesn’t start to boil

At least hydrogen chloride (HCl) vapours while still toxic and corrosive are less dangerous and easier to handle than hydrogen fluoride (HF) vapours. I'm not saying that hydrogen chloride vapours aren't dangerous rather I'm saying that their easier to work with than hydrogen fluoride HF vapours although hydrogen chloride vapours are still dangerous and should be handled very carefully with appropriate PPE
Also even though they are very nasty, if the concentration you are breathing is dangerous, you notice it pretty fast as it's far more irritating than toxic so you have time to run away. Other gases like carbon monoxide, phosgene and hydrogen cyanide are fare more dangerous as they will easily kill you without giving almost any warning sign.

Firstly the method you described would sadly not work for making Ac2O. Secondly getting acetyl chloride was cheap and easy for me. In the future we are going to explore easier methods to make Ac2O
You can make acetyl chloride from benzoyl chloride and acetate. Benzoyl chloride isn't that hard to get.
