      Lol I never understand why he makes everything in such massive qty... then I start trying to tweak the reaction and realize I should have done it in bulk from the beginning.
      Any ideas as to why this reaction works with acetophenone and didn't really work when I tried with cyclohexanone? I had 3L on hand, but I just had to order 120g Acetophenone to at least get SOME pyrrolidine to work with. I also want to do a bunch of different coupling reactions on my new channel... When I tried in the past maybe I didn't reflux long enough; maybe it needed to be slowly distilled for many hours longer than acetophenone does... who knows.... Could you offer any insight into why everyone uses this one ketone and not another? I could go to the trouble of making myself loads of propiophenone or p-methylpropiophenone, but that's not ideal

      But before I needed to clean some glassware. I learned that it worked perfectly when I flushed the pipette used to collect the product with water from the tap.

      Ive found that nebulized capsaicin is an incredibly powerful uhhh dunno what is the term but it makes you cough and sneeze extremely strongly, just a few μg per cubic meter of air is enough to feel you are coughing and sneezing your lungs out.
      How I discovered that, I dissolved about 150mg of capsaicin on 20ml of ethanol and then sprayed that with a fine mist nasal spray bottle I purposefully used that due the fine mist it produces, the alcohol evaporates and the capsaicin particles are quite small, it looks like a faint bluish smoke if spritz on a beam of sun or a powerful flashlight. Just a couple of spritz were enough to make everyone in the house cough and sneeze like crazy, everyone got really mad at me, something very rare and a testament of how noxious it is considering everyone in the house are used to all shorts of smells, vapors, lights and noises. We opened all windows and aired the house. Playing with the concentration and droplet size (before the solvent evaporates) changes the effect between more cough or more sneezes.

    I did a contract where we had to disassemble a bunch of old riot control munitions that contained CS powder. We did as much of it as possible in negative pressure glove boxes, but it was inevitable that you would get a slight exposure every day. In small doses, it really smells like nothing, just all of the sudden your nose starts running, your eyes water slightly, and you get this kinda high cough. That said, I get seasonal nasal congestion, and very slight exposure opens my nose up like you wouldn't believe.
    FWIW, being this close to christmas the CS powder isn't all that interesting. Bust some back out in the summer, even at high room temperatures it sublimates surprisingly readily.
    Fun video, thanks for suffering for science.

    2:24 For the mechanism, the reactive species is the iminium not the enamine. You would form the iminium releasing water. The second proton comes from the carboxylic acid of the proline (it’s its own acid catalyst).
    For heat based decarboxylations, you need an electron sink which the iminium provides. The resulting Zwitterion is protonated with water/acid. The iminium is hydrolyzed to give pyrrolidine and acetophenone.

  • @jhyland87
    @jhyland87 8 месяцев назад +13

    Pyrrolidine... I actually have some of that. Some of it leaked on the side of a beaker, and I wiped it up with a paper towel and put it aside. A few minutes later, I went to blow my nose, and accidentally grabbed the paper towel I used to wipe the pyrrolidine up with. I literally huffed the pyrrolidine, albeit unintentionally.
    I don't gag much when it comes to odors, but that was absolutely terrible. I imagine snorting lines of rotten fish guts would be pretty similar. lol.

    Considerably worse on your skin if you work up a sweat first. In the Army, they made us exercise beforehand to maximize this effect. Then, upon removing our gas masks, we were expected to sing. Hilarity ensued. Though, I didn't think it was very funny at the time. - While they used CS grenades in the field to terrorize us they were actually using a hotplate in the gas chamber and were pouring the grenade pellets directly onto it. Makes for a very dense cloud very rapidly.

    Biggest mistake i ever made with cs was when i went through a dcon class and had to get gassed (again for like the 4th time) and i was in the last group to go in so they dumped the rest of the pellets on the hot plate (normally its 1-3 pellets per group but we had 26) and it promptly caught fire plus my masks filter didn't have the seal rings cause the marine corps is broke. Because of that my mask leaked a bit and my eyes were very itchy. Well i underestimated how much cs was on us when we were out cause it wasnt bad in there (with mask even leaking) and i subconsciously rubbed my itchy eye and a THICK coat of cs went in my eye with spread all about my face. 10 minutes of great pain and a realization that i had enough cs on my cammies to ruin everyone elses day

  • @LenKusov
    @LenKusov 8 месяцев назад +4

    The teary-eyed effects and the skin burning in wet areas aren't too bad to handle, but inhaling it sucks. As much as breathing it through your nose hurts though, breathing through the mouth is the wrong move cause usually you end up doubled over coughing up a lung. It's an aerosolized powder so if you can tolerate breathing through your nose it'll take the edge off, and any particulate-catching mask - everything from a T shirt to an n95 to a respirator with P3/P100 filters - will stop it with varying degrees of effectiveness. Ideally though, you wanna make sure your gas mask filters are wrapped with a rag or something because 9 times outta 10 if CS is being used, so is OC spray and that'll mess up or soak through most filters. If you've got a 3M mask they mitigate this by having a plastic housing version of their P100 plus nuisance gas filters, the 7093HC carts, that has the intakes in a place it's impossible to spray capsaicin into which is very useful. Just, y'know, experience from 2020 in Louisville.

    How convenient! I just ordered some Acetophenone yesterday, and I'm waiting for it to arrive Sat to begin processing the kilo of L-Proline I've been saving. I tried it with cyclohexanone, and in theory it should work the same, but perhaps the aromatic ring causes some extra strain on the alpha carbon? That's the only explanation I have as to why the cyclic aliphatic ketone didn't work for me, but I'm just an amateur... Anyway, I ordered a 120g sample of Acetophenone since I'm all self funded and can't splurge for now. I know it will work with that. Maybe I can tweak it to work with cyclohexanone and post a unique version of what you did...

    CS is not the strongest tear gas. Stronger is for example CR gas. ICt concentrations are about 10x smaller. And CR can cause iritation of skin as well. CS can cause it as well but only in higrer temperature if skin is sweaty. An even more insidious are arsenicals as Clark I (DA), Clark II (DC) or Adamsit (DN). Those are not true “tear” gases but cause iritation of breathing system. They are insidious because don’t cause immediate iritation but it is delayed by several minutes (and trigger panic gas mask don’t work) and effect last many tens of minutes or even hours. There is very uncomformtable feelings of asphyxia. In concentration even several miligrams in cubic meter. As a CBRN specialist I know those stuffs very vell. And CS is the friendly one in comparison with others😊

    • @pieterveenders9793
      @pieterveenders9793 Месяц назад

    When I was in the army we hqd "Gas chamber day" where we had to go in, remove our masks, and do jumping jacks for 5 min or so while they pumped CS into the room. For about three months after, you could still smell the CS in the set of BDUs you wore through the gas chamber.

    Hello! There is an easier way to get this substance and other similar substances from aromatic aldehydes and malonodinitril. The reaction should be carried out in the water ethanol (70%). The catalyst is a glycine amino acid. The output is almost quantitative. I synthesized many substances of a similar structure many years ago. Some of them are much more active than the CS. I recommend you try to synthesize the older brother of the CS, the CR, Dibenzoxazepine. Good luck!

    If anyone needs a taste of the effects, if you have a gas stove, just grab you're shaker of black pepper and it's easy. Light your burner and just shake the pepper shaker over the burner and let the falling bits light up as they fall. Lean in a bit and get a good whiff of the resulting smoke. This probably works on a hot electric burner as well. Not exactly the same as a lung full of CS, but at least you can feel something and maybe scratch the itch to feel.
