the materials in the jackets we like cost more than this jacket. for $250 new is not the way.
As a 19 yo, it's crazy to me that a 300 dollar piece of clothing could be called "cheap". Truth be told, yes the 1000+ jackets are probably way better, but unfortunately, most us just can't afford to drop 1500 bucks on a jacket and I don't buy into the "if you can't afford a real one don't get any one" gatekeeping
I used to agree. But what I’ve found now at 31, is cheap fast clothing, sure is easy to acquire but it won’t last. I’d much rather pay more and have something I know will last. When I buy something now it’s an investment that will serve me the rest of my life. I’d rather have a modest wardrobe of clothes like that, then an over abundance of cheaper stuff. Socks underwear tee shirts. I’ll always buy those cheap, but jackets, boots, denim, invest in those items.
Get what you like and what you can rightly afford. In 2020 Schott was running a big gun sale and I snagged a 613 for a great price. Two years later I still hadn’t worn the thing because it was always too small. I sold it for more than I bought it for and used that money to get a new 118 off eBay for half the price Schott sells them for. But those arms, man.. so long.

@@jaxn13 Well yes, at 31 i'll probably buy more expensive clothing myself, but at 19, I couldn't drop 1800 bucks (essentially half of my bank account's balance lol) for 1 jacket.
The thing is is that those $1000 leather jackets are just fashion pieces. High quality durable leather jackets are not going to run you $1000. $300 to $500 is pretty normal for a leather jacket that will protect you from a motorcycle crash and last a life time. Yeah even $300 to $500 can even sound pricey but your are basically buying a piece of armor that will never fail you as long as you condition it and waterproof it
The problem with brands such as "The Jacket Maker" is that someone who doesn't know how much a good leather jacket cost could look at one of those jackets and think that $250 is a lot of money and that you should get a lot of quality for that price tag. Imagine saving up to buy a nice jacket and then ending up with that glorified plastic bag in your mail box. It is just dishonest.
My buddy is like that. He thinks I’m some sort of snob for spending $675 for my jacket but he has no idea that’s just what you should expect when you want to buy a leather jacket. Leather jackets are so expensive you have to buy them with purpose, you can’t just “this would look good with this one outfit” and buy it. You have to weigh out how many outfits you’d wear it with and whatnot.

Fantastic review. I've seen a bunch of review videos from fashion youtubers lately as the jacket maker sent out a bunch of jackets for review. You said it best that it's knowing your audience. Guys who are into quality or heritage influenced clothing would not wear this brands products. Thanks for giving an unbiased review as everyone else made it out that these are the best leather jackets on the market and that's just not the case.

I didn’t want to be swayed one way or the other so I didn’t watch any of them before making my review. I glanced at a couple last night and ooft. They are kinda weird. And in the comments there’s some more weirdness going on.
I think the whole stigma and mentality of ‘if it’s less than a grand it’s garbage’ is pretty silly. I bought a nubuck leather jacket from one of the many vendors in Italy. Yes the leather is pretty thin, and yes I did have to repair it after 3 years as I caught it on something, but it is easily the best fitting, most comfortable, most versatile, most flattering, loveliest smelling, best patina-ing leather jacket I’ve ever owned. It cost 80 EUROS!!! Not pounds, EUROS! I love it, and it will be with me for years to come
Did you have to put the patina on it yourself or did it come with that already?

@@markopolo9936 I hate waiting for that process to complete itself. Very annoying. Car guys jerk off to manual transmission, off-road, and towing capacity. I guess leather guys jerk off to "real leather" and the "spend a grand" movement. Most of us will do fine with an economy car and a bargain leather jacket. People think our products are wonderful because they like the type of human beings we are. No body gives a damn about your stupid jerk-off jacket if they don't like you as a person. At best, you will seem like a self-obsessed egomaniac that is hopeless and desperate for validation and approval. Getting a cheaper one shows that you really don't care and do not need the crappy approval that emotionally weak people crave.

Thank you for this! I was about to get one but went local and got an amazing jacket from Johnson Leathers in SF instead. Sure, it was roughly 4x more expensive BUT I believe it's well worth the price. If you're going for a premium product; expect to pay premium prices. You pretty much always get what you pay for when it comes to a good leather jacket

Here in Mexico you can find used cowhide jackets for 60 bucks, (USD) and some brand new thick cowhide ones for around 100... New lambskins cost around 80 dollars, with the León city manufacturers they cost even like 50USD plus shipping
Mexico is a great place to get clothing. Actually, I've been there and it's just an all-around great country. The food is world class. I live in California and get to experience it second-hand.

If you want a leather jacket, but you’re not willing to drop at least 600-800 dollars on a new one then I highly recommend buying one used. The beauty of leather jackets is they are tough as hell, so they’re one of the best clothing items to buy used because they hold up so well. I’ve bought several leather jackets used before, and two that stand out are my Rodd Gunn Westhaven that’s a beautiful brown goatskin that sells for $850 I believe, but I picked up lightly used for $200. The other a Belstaff David Beckham edition that sold originally in the $1500 range, but I picked up for $350 barely worn. Are they Aero leather jackets? No, but they’ve held up extremely well, have thick durable leather, and have the styling I desire.
Absolutely agree. Some of my favourite leather jackets I got second hand. The stand out is the vanson Barney’s collab from a few years back.

I have a myriad of expensive leather jackets from Aero, Eastman and The Real McCoy. I bought a cheap leather jacket from Real leather. It was surprisingly good. I mean the leather wasn’t heavy duty but it fit well, didn’t smell and looked good on. Will that stop me from buying quality, expensive leather jackets no but it made me think. It was under $200 cdn. 🤔

@@TomAZ1984 I did get the Keanu actually. In black smooth, in a Large. I'm about 6'1", 190lbs and the fit is about perfect. I would call it "Athletic" but I have room to wear a sweater under it. The leather is calfskin, I'm pretty sure. I'm still breaking it in, but so far it feels and smells wonderful.

I’m trying to get into leather jackets but as I mentioned in another comment, very few companies post videos of their products or photos on their websites that are relatable.
Your comments might be enough to push me to getting the Keanu! On their site, it looked kind of boxy and oversized in the torso, like Indiana Jones. I’m definitely going for a John Wick, slimmer, modern cut.
Can you recommend a good brand for a car coat as well (four button, lamb, very fluid and free flowing)? Like the one Mac wears in Always Sunny or Brad Pitt from Killing Them Softly.
I still got a cowhide leather jacket from wilson 12 years ago i bought for around 150 bucks. You do t need to spend 1k.
Have a couple off their jackets for a year or two. Have found the quality to be pretty good. They tend to be on the expensive side though in my view.
I own seven or eight leather jackets, all but one were made by Aero, the outlier is a Good Wear. I like the fact that I've met the people who made my jacket, who've done my measurements and talked about what I want and what will work for me. Yes, they are expensive, but they're designed to literally get better with every year. But I don't have a problem with Indian/Chine produced stuff. It comes down to what the person commissioning the factory is willing to spend in terms of production. I've tried the likes of Bronson, and beyond their sizing quirks, it's good stuff, but I've seen jackets that are absolutely horrendous and intended to pick up a quick, cheap buck from unsuspecting customers.
So Bronson is half decent?
@@CeeAreDee For the asking the price, it's pretty good. I bought a 30s-style wabash print denim jacket that I got a of wear out of. It's definitely not the standard of the Japanese makers, and the weird sizings mean you have to tread very carefully - I usually go one size up on Japanese brands, but with Bronson I just scrape upper edge of their medium. That said, it's an opportunity to try stuff at a reasonable price you might balk at paying full-fat on. I recently bought some Baker pants for around £35-£40, and they're perfectly serviceable (again, sizing is a thing for the longer-legged) but I'd be up for Japanese-made pair.

Do not buyfrom The Jacket Maker! I just recently bought a supposively "Genuine cowhide leather jacket" from them and it already started pealing. Do not buy from them! Save up a little more and buy a trusted brand.

While I’ll agree the leather isn’t the greatest, it still beats paying nearly as much for straight up faux leather jacket. Still gets compliments but it’s not a jacket that will last a life time. If I could turn back time I’d probably skip it and wait till I was ready to drop a grand on a full quality one. That said I bought one of their suede jackets as well and I love it. It has the same generic could be whatever animal tag on it, but whatever it is feels as nice as any other suede I’ve come across and it’s built with the same level of construction shown in your review. I’ve got no complaints as far as that jacket goes.

They make nice jackets. Soft light leather! Way better than the jacket I purchased at Zara, which was heavy, hard, stiff leather with zips that do not last.
Sorry Mark. Gotta publicly disagree. Or well. In a way. They make nice jackets from terrible materials. They falsely advertise and have underhand policies when it comes to marketing. I find the company distasteful and dishonest in every way.

it is not us who needs to reduce our assumption that the brands who move to these countries are selling out. it is up to the brands to convince their customers they are not and why exactly they made the switch and why.
That's exactly correct. It's not "racist," or "bigoted," or "Occidentalist" or whatever term people want to use. We all know that the vast majority of quality clothing, footwear, etc come from the USA, Europe, and Japan. And we know that shit quality stuff comes from India, China, etc.

Some very interesting thoughts about sustainasbility but also cultural exploitation and the affect on a culture that sudden interest in ancient 'culturally' referenced skills can have. Also, some nice discussion re the jacket. Sadly I think it will be 'pearls before swine'. From looking at their website I suspect that this lot are truly 'fast fashion' and all that implies.

I got so duped! I bought a jacket from James Leather for a bit over $200 supposedly marked down from $300. Well a plastic wrapped jacket arrived by DHL from Pakistan. Cheaply made POS.
Everybody, spend a grand on a jacket, love it and wear it for life rather than throwing away cheap $200 POS every other year. My jacket did not even have flap with county of origin, materials, SKU, or care instructions. I am currently trying to return it.
P.S.: ironically, the Disaster Artist - Tommy Wiseau supposedly got rich by "importing leather jackets from South Korea". Darn, looks like I have bankrolled similarly shady character like that.

That's the same EXACT experience I've had with ordering jackets that were made in Pakistan, especially one front CA leathers who deceptively try to lead customers to believe they are based out of Canada.
They took my measurements, and the fit and workmanship were top notch.
But the leather was absolute crap; it was paper thin, and had a toxic, nauseating chemical smell.
They hijacked a stock photo from Godspeeds site of the vintage brown stealth moto jacket.
I might use it for welding or something.
I have several leather jackets from India and Pakistan !!! I really like them !!! I also have an Indian Royal Enfield Continental 535 cc GT Motorbike !!! They Say its a cheap motorbike, with it's Harris Frame, Brembo Brakes, Pirelli Tyres etc. I don't care about very Expensive Leather Jackets, so long as they are Tough, Hard Wearig and look Good !!! I even have some P U Jackets, because they are Waterproof !!!!

@@CeeAreDee Plastics now are practically indestructible. Those platic/leather belts are much tougher than a Leather Belt. My Kindle cover looks like leather and it won't wear out. I am happy to have a substitute so an animal doesnt have to die !!! So long as it's hard wearing. I have repair kits for my P U jackets in case they get damaged !!!!
The fact is that 3Sixteen made much of the same clothing they are now outsourcing to India in America before. They made flannels for example in America before. So clearly there are the skills to make these things in America. They are also charging the same amount that they were charging for American goods. I'm not paying 220 dollars for a flannel made in India. Part of the reason I was willing to pay that much was the pride of American made goods. If it costs the same as when it was produced in America they clearly weren't paying their American workers a fair wage in the first place. I am a big 3Sixteen fan but won't be buying anything they make in India and I'm very skeptical that they are starting to go the way of Taylor Stitch and Filson, cashing in on their name while outsourcing and reducing quality. There are many other brands making similar products in America or Japan where I can be confident that their labor practices are not grossly exploitative.

Most businesses in any sort of competitive industry at all rarely make over 5% profit on a good year....almost all major currencies have inflated by nearly 100% in the last 15 years if you look at actual prices of goods.
You're still getting just as good a deal, while the ppl you're criticizing are other victims of this same thing.

threads of apollo is def better than this trash. But their leather seems a bit corrected....while the jacket makers is flaking off as if its genuine leather. But like CRD said I recommend second as well, or even just go on grailed and filter for new leather jackets from nicer brands. I picked up a new allsaints jacket with tags for $225. So if you look you can definitely find good deals on higher quality items.
If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck - its a duck. The Chinese in particular are very very good at Faux Leather, and their advertising implies that it is leather until you get to the small print (if you can find it).
I suspect this is faux leather. (plastic).
I'm looking for a leather jacket but can't afford a grand for a known make new one, however good, so I am looking at known make used jackets and I am finding some affordable jackets with acceptable patina by well known makers, both USA and UK. For me that is the way to go.
The sound it made or lack of it, as it hit the table at the start of the actual review, was enough to put me off.

It is almost strictly a fashion brand. The leather is thin and less durable but comfortable and looks good. Like modern Levi’s compared to selvedge denim.
3:16, taylor stitch, Billy Reid, and filson have moved most or all their production over seas. they all made some version of the spirited defense you make here for off shoring. and it is compelling. 1. skills are not available here. 2. don't be racist. but doesn't this mean someone is out of work here? we have no capacity to make things in time of emergency or supply chain disruption. its just heartbraking to see brands i love slowly drop usa made gear one after another. thanks to Gustin, Bravestar, Schott

@@VoiceOfTheWhirlwind perhaps not directly, just the idea that choosing to buy only usa made can allegedly be nationalistic, which could be construed as excluding buying imports as discrimination against the people making the products . not saying i agree. i consider buying local as important to a thriving local economy that includes manufacturing which doesnt require a college degree. i think having a manufacturing capacity is also important for national security, the pandemic, or during wartime.
Leather garments from Pakistan, and perhaps from China, South Korea, and India as well, indeed tend to suffer from questionable quality materials. When the type of leather is not specified it is often sheep or lamb, which is plentiful/cheap, often lightweight, and not very durable. It is most suitable for fashion garments without special functional demands. Cowhide is less plentiful and more expensive. The best cowhide on garments I've seen out of Pakistan is only very average in terms of tanning quality. Some leathers from Pakistan are processed so that they have a foul, strong smell rather than a pleasant aroma, and I dread to think what leaves them smelling so bad. The YKK zippers used in Pakistani leather garments I've seen are likewise average. One on a custom garment I had failed quite readily--the teeth stripped apart--under normal wear for that garment. I agree, the patterning, sizing, and sewing of Pakistani artisans are generally excellent. Quality control needs greater consistency, but that is also true from many first world leather garment makers too.
My thought is that a single person, experienced enough to recognize, require, and consistently obtain the best leather for a particular garment, and who also is skilled at piecing/jobbing leather for its pattern, and in sewing and construction, who know how to fit garments well, and who selects high quality hardware, will on the whole do a better job creating a garment than a committee of specialized people who each only have responsibility for their area of production and quality control. Overall quality control for garments made by a production team is harder to achieve, I think. With a Pakistani team communication across the language barrier can also hinder accuracy and quality. No seamstress, however experienced and skilled, can sew a great garment using mediocre leather and/or weak thread. And no one can produce a great garment with schlocky, second-rate hardware either.
My priorities for a great leather garment are:
1. the right type and thickness of a HIGH quality leather that's suited to the garment and its function
2. great design, fit/sizing, and precision/consistency of construction
3. high quality/durable hardware, thread, and lining materials
4. Good quality control and oversight of the entire construction process.
I consider all four of these priorities as essential, but everything begins with the right type and high quality of leather chosen/used. Mass-produced garments may suffer in any of these areas, but usually most evidently with respect to the quality of the leather used. Other telltales of inferior quality are poor/odd fit, too much piecing of the leather, and flimsy hardware.

Wouldn’t really have worked out that way. Without them offering me the jacket there is no way I’d have come across the brand. Maybe they did really push out the experts to make this one but they still made it from sub standard materials and therefore I came to the conclusion that it was to be avoided. And shared that conclusion. I think the value is to be found there.
@@CeeAreDee yeah, I mean after you become aware of a brand (say they sent one to you), only way to give a really accurate review is to make a pseudo account and order it separately again to make sure you're getting a piece that your viewers would get too. it's the extra mile, sure, but it's the only way to make sure that on top of the poor materials, they aren't putting in extra effort with the stitching. same concept applies for food critics - best to go test the food undercover.. otherwise the chef will pay special attention and cook it extra nicely.

This looks like reconstituted leather which is leather pulp (waste product from various sources) ground up and reconstituted with some kind of binding agent and then textured and applied to a cheap thin cloth - it will peal, crumble and disintegrate just like plastic. This item is a waste of talent and probably points to a very exploitative and unjust use of local labour and skill in the country of origin.

Bro leather jackets that aren’t thick cowhide are NOT real leather jackets imo. My jacket is from a biker store for $500 and weighs like 10lb. I got stabbed in it and it STOPPED THE KNIFE literally true story. Its a cafe racer style made in pakistan. The stitching is kinda sketchy but the leather is chonky af and full grain with a brass YKK zipper. Had it for 4 years now no sign of wear other than slight patina

Boots companies seem to be mostly heading in the right direction nowdays. With decent boots with decent leather available from India, Phillipines, China, etc
These jackets are ALL over Ebay etc and they are made in India. The styles are great, but they don’t smell like leather at ALL. They smell like a mix of plastic and chemical. Also, the sizing is off. Stay away from these subpar jackets.

Never buy a leather jacket from Pakistan they will not let you know what type of material grain of leather they are using. They have a lot of defects. Bottom line, save your money, get a real one from a company that is well known.

i'm gutted. i dream of a good leather jacket but will never be able to afford £1000+ so when i saw The Jacket Maker i was quite pleased, though £250 is still a hell of a lot for me i thought i could get something that was passable. of course i know it could never be the same as a high priced jacket but as i say i thought it would be at least close. guess i'm never gonna have a jacket i could be proud off. :(
