@@gazrev7671You are kidding right? I thought Grahame was terrible. Sleazy and unlikeable. PS I don’t mean the actor, I mean the acting interpretation. Whereas this Ado Annie is sweet and lively.
I think they're both positively nasty to each other. I much prefer Gene Nelson's Will and Gloria Grahame's Annie in the 1955 film version. They're playfully bantering with each other for the most part, and it's absolutely delightful.
my school is doing Oklahoma for our 2019 spring musical, and i got Ado Annie. so this really helps with my characterizing process and learning the song! thank you!!
I played Will Parker in my Junior year of High School and it’s my favorite role I’ve played it was also the first time I played a character with a girlfriend and the first time I kissed a girl on stage
Things to note: This is the stage version, anyone appearing in a stage musical better be good at singing, loud and strong. Will Parker had better be aggressive, since cowboys and farmers didn't get along and he's courting a farmer's daughter. This version of Annie is closer to the ideal, an excitable and oversexed 16-year-old. Plus Gloria Grahame was not a good singer.
I agree the movie is lacking in the case of Ado Annie, but not the rest of the cast. I liked Curly and Jud in this, but I didn't care for Will or Aunt Eller. Ali Hakim annoyed me. I could not stand Laurey - I thought making her a tomboy and dressing her in pants was a terrible idea. Plus, the actress just gave a really cold, hostile performance and that's not Laurey's character at all.
You got this pal! I believe in you! Push your vocals a little bit each day without hurting yourself. This is such a fun character to play, so have fun!
I definitely prefer Gene Nelson's performance, he will always be Will to me. I didn't care for this actor's portrayal. But man, Ado Annie is so much better here! The actress's performance just makes much more sense. The instrumental portion is definitely better in the movie than here.
I prefer Nelson's performance too. What I don't like about this Will and Annie is that they're both so nasty to each other. This duet should be fun and playful, not vicious.
100% agree. I think Gene Nelson plays Will as disarming and not actually a ladies man, which is what makes this song fun. Like he is not giving up "lots of things a gentleman never mentions" he didn't have those things! Like Annie is ACTUALLY sexually adventurous, and Will is PRETENDING. I feel like this actor portrays Will as just as oversexed as Annie and as quite aggressive towards her, which makes him almost sinister? But her performance is incredible. I mean I don't fault him for it, I think he does a good job at portraying the character, I just don't like his portrayal that much.
Will: You'll have to be a little more standoffish When fellers offer you a buggy ride. Annie: I'll give a imitation of a crawfish And dig myself a hole where I can hide. Will: I heared how you was kickin' up some capers When I was off in Kansas City, Mo. I heard some things you couldn't print in papers From fellers who been talkin' like they know! Annie: Foot! I only did the kind of things I orta, sorta, To you I was as faithful as c'n be fer me. Them stories 'bout the way I lost my bloomers - Rumors! A lot of tempest in a pot o' tea! Will: The whole thing don't sound very good to me. Annie: Well, y' see. Will: I go and sow my last wild oat! I cut out all shenanigans. I save my money, don't gamble or drink In the back room down at Flannigans! I give up lotsa other things A gentleman never mentions, But before I give up anymore, I wanta know your intentions! With me it's all er nuthin'. Is it all er nuthin' with you? It cain't be "in between" It cain't be "now and then" No half and half romance will do! I'm a one woman man, Home lovin' type, All complete with slippers and pipe. Take me like I am, er leave me be! If you cain't give me all, give me nuthin' And nuthin's whut you'll git from me! Annie: Not even sump'n? Will: Nuthin's whut you'll git from me! Annie: It cain't be "in between" Will: Hmm Hmm! Annie: It cain't be "now and then" Will: No half and half romance will do! Annie: Would you build me a house All painted white Cute and clean and purty and bright Will: Big enough fer two but not fer three! Annie: S'posin' that we should have a third one? Will: He better look a lot like me! Annie: Yer spited image! Will: He better look a lot like me! Annie: With you it's all er nuthin'. All fer you and nuthin' fer me! But if a wife is wise, she's gotta realize That men like you are wild and free. So I ain't gonna fuss, ain't gonna frown, Have your fun, go out on the town, Stay up late and don't come home till three. And go right off to sleep if you're sleepy, There's no use waitin' up fer me! Will: Oh, Ado Annie! Annie: No use waitin' up fer me! Will: Come back and kiss me!
I often think about when girls have said to me "I'm sorry Jeff but my boyfriend doesn't like me hanging out with other men". For now on at times I kinda wanna ask "Ooh! Is your boyfriend Will Parker?!"
I think she is supposed to be one of Skidmore's daughters, along with the other girl she is normally with. In the dance sequence at the schoolhouse I saw Skidmore had both of them by the hand.
This duet should be playful and fun, not a competition to see which one can be more vicious. These two are just plain nasty. The film version with Gene Nelson and Gloria Grahame is really the best.
@@FlowersInHisHair Well, O rude one, I was just stating my opinion, just as everyone else is here. Actually the clown emoji suits you perfectly. Incidentally, before you lecture me further, I know the difference between acting for stage and acting for the screen.
Actually the song is ahead of its time when it comes to showing the problems with women's sexual freedom. I wish more men would lay down the law with the women they want to marry, though the cowboy probably should look elsewhere for a wife.
This is a reminder how rubbish the Daniell Fish production is that has just transferred to London. It has nine of the subtext and humour of Trevor Nunn’s glorious 1999 production at the National Theatre as seen here.

This scene is amazing. Play is very modern. And this Will is how a MAN in Oklahoma at that time would act.
She does one pretty cute "imitation of a crawfish" right there. ^____^
she has the best vocals as Annie
She's still my favorite Annie by far. Just nails the character and the vocals!
Gloria Grahame can NEVER be bettered, it's impossible.
@@gazrev7671 Gloria Grahame's acting certainly is great, but Vicki Simons has the vocals and the character
Vicki Simon‘s Annie is flirty and bubbly as she should be.

I love Will's voice
Sharon McKenney Ya
Wow.I'm not sure how I feel about this Will. He's a bit aggressive, I prefer the gentler Will. But I absolutely love this Annie.
Love Annie in this!
He's probably chewing gum, but it is supposed to be tobacco--ugh--that kiss nasty, not sexy.
This was my first Will; I think his agressiveness made him a stronger character

How would you act to the "love of your life" who'd been sleeping around while you were away trying to earn some money 🤦♂️😂.
Well acted and well directed by Trevor Nunn. You get alot of the sub-text in this production. Courageous..a hallmark of TN`s direction.
This guy can sing and dance!

I played Will Parker once it was fun
Best part ever!
I played Ado Annie in my HS production. I only used this show as reference, its my personal favorite actress for her character
I played Will Parker in my Junior year of High School and it’s my favorite role I’ve played it was also the first time I played a character with a girlfriend and the first time I kissed a girl on stage
He has a really good voice, too.

This was a brilliant show.. and I loved this Will Parker

How is this the best cast? The accents are so off lol. The film has to feel a bit smaller because it's not on the stage.
Best song from Rodgers and Hammerstein's 1st musical.
The fact that my high school is doing this show and I’m playing Will Parker and I have to sing this song and I don’t think I can hit the high notes
You got this pal! I believe in you! Push your vocals a little bit each day without hurting yourself. This is such a fun character to play, so have fun!
Do you get a chance to perform with a lasso?
It's a shame, because he sounds better lower like in the movie.

Does anyone know the name of the actress playing Annie?
Vicki Simon
Is that Brendan Bradley singing!???
I haven't seen the whole show can someone explain who random smooching dancing girl was?
Just that. She's one of the farmers daughters who is besotted with the guy she was chasing. Or any fella as you can see.

I'll lay money that you know someone in Pella High Schools effort, hardly an impartial opinion is it
hes definitely too old for the role, but great singing performance nonetheless.
He's NOT too old.Back then, men tried to save a 'nest egg'.That took time...and when they cast actors they want a great voice and dance skills.
At least the wad of tobacco in his mouth is realistic.

"Lay down the law" fucking hell... Go back to 1952 😂😂😂😂
lmao the song was never meant to lay down any law in the first place. it was supposed to be loving banter like a playful back-and-forth.
