  • I haven’t had an Eclectus parrot, but I’ve certainly researched them and consulted with my experts to learn about them because they are popular but misunderstood.

I have an ekkie pair that were rescues and they are the kindest birds I have ever met. My male is like a green dog, my female is the most polite little girl on the planet. They don’t love head scratches but they are hams, especially my male.

Thank you for posting, Audrey! Hams, eh? Do they talk? I'm a little jealous! They are so beautiful! I don't want to try to meet their dietary needs, but if an Ekkie showed up at my door (I've had birds surrendered to me in the past), I wouldn't leave them hungry or homeless! Jealous! Would love to see pics- do you post anywhere?

About six months ago I had a female eclectus parrot quite literally claim me as her person. We live in the country and I had just got home and was unloading the car when I heard I bird contact call that was louder than anything I had ever heard here. I was thinking it was a chicken hawk or something and something was wrong with it because it was so loud so I started looking around. I then noticed a bright red and purple parrot about 10ft up in a tree staring at me and lifting her foot for me to get her. I held out my hand and called to her and she kept looking like was wanted to fly down but couldn’t so I got a ladder and she stepped right on my hand. My husband was actually worried she was going to bite me but I was like no she won’t she is lifting her foot for me! It had been windy for several days and she was not only clipped but her tail was cut off! We did try to find the owners for a long while but who knows how many miles she had flown. She had no band and no micro chip. Our avian vet said he was glad she found us because he feels she was mistreated. She is nice to everyone but it bonded to me. She loves cuddles and head scratching from me. Others she is content just sitting near them. She didn’t talk when we found her but within two months she began saying tons of phrases I use regularly. She now has over 300 words and makes her own phrases and can have full conversations with us!! Skittles is most definitely my best friend!!

You may have an exceptional Ecky, who knows? I hope he stays affectionate for you. I especially want people to know what they are getting before they get a parrot, generally speaking, so that they aren't unhappy with their bird. My mission is to help people love their bird so they don't surrender/rehome them :)

My male Eclectus loves to cuddle in the bed. My son can touch him on his head but I can only touch his back. Yes mostly fruit and vegetables. Food has to be of high quality and no food coloring and water should be filtered. Only small amount of seeds.

I have an eclectus. I don’t mind that he’s not cuddly. He’s happy to do his own thing & I like that.
He’s really sweet natured. He loves people & he doesn’t bite. He’s not destructive, so I can leave him in the house on his own.
It’s a pain not being able to give him pellets because he’s a fussy eater, & it’s a constant struggle to get him to eat certain food. In the ten years I’ve had him, he’s had an aversion to orange coloured food. No matter how I present it to him, he won’t eat it.
The other con is that some years, he has long, ugly molts where he goes bald in certain areas & you can see his skin. It’s not a light gradual molt like other parrots.

Interesting! I understand there are some specialty pellets FOR Eckies. Clearly you did research and you know you can't give regular pellets, I'm sure you know not to give eggs too.
I agree, an independent bird that doesn't want cuddles isn't a bad thing. After all, we are busy humans and we don't have the time to be in and with our flocks day in and day out.
What's your Eckie's name? I've always wanted one, but I don't want to put a different diet in my mix. My 22+ species all get pellets; the seeds, no seeds/nuts and yes nut - differences isn't hard on me, but so many different diets isn't simple, so I'd hate to mix in another factor!

@@ParrotBliss Hi, my eclectus’ name is Oscar. I also have an Amazon parrot called Basil. Basil loves hugs & scratches, & this is another reason I like that Oscar is not a tactile bird - I don’t have to divide my time between the two. Oscar does not even like scratches or tickles. Most evenings, he is happy to entertain himself with his toys. Lately, though, because it’s been so cold, he’s just been sitting on his stand next to the heater.
The other difference between Oscar & Basil is noise. Even though Oscar is not as loud as Basil, he can be noisy & his noises are more high pitched & shrill. He makes several startling noises that give people a start. When he turned five, the noise became an issue. He was making his contact call a lot. There were times I found it difficult to deal with. He’s settled down now, though. Maybe he went through an adolescent stage that made him do it?
I mention the noise because I think it can be an issue. Before Oscar, I had a cockatoo & didn’t have an issue with her noise, & Basil’s squawk doesn’t bother me. 😸
As far as diet goes, my main issue is his aversion to orange coloured food, which, despite of it, I offer to him every day. If you have any suggestions about what I can do, I’d appreciate it. I make chop sometimes but I don’t give it to my birds all the time because they seem to enjoy holding their food in their feet.
Obviously, the other issue is pellets. Where I live, in Victoria, Australia, I can’t get Topps.
For the first couple of years I had Oscar, if I gave him pellets, he got the dreaded tow taps. In severe cases, he’d flip his wings & have muscle spasms in his legs. It wasn’t pleasant. It was only after I cut pellets out of his diet that these symptoms stopped.
He may have developed a resistance to them because for the past year, I’ve been sprinkling Basil’s pellets over his food & he has not had any health problems.
I don’t find it difficult feeding two types of parrots, mainly because i give them similar food. I fill their bowls up with lots of veggies & sprinkle pellets over them. They also like plants from the garden, such as milk thistle & they like beetroot leaves from the veggie garden.
I used to feed Oscar egg, if only because my eclectus book said it was okay, but after I read different opinions about it. I cut it out.
He loves chicken when we have roast chicken.
He doesn’t like fruit. He only really likes banana, which I sometimes roll in oats as a treat for him.
I used to give Basil grapes as treats, until I discovered your channel & heeded your advice.
I also cook rice, quinoa & pasta for the birds.
But I really don’t find Oscar’s diet that different to Basil’s. The only real difference is the amount of pellets I give him.
If you have any advice on how I can improve their diets, I’d love that.
Finally, I keep reading how eclectus are difficult specialty birds, but I don’t find that at all. Like all parrots, they have their pros & cons. I got Oscar after my pet cockatoo died, & I’m glad I got him because I like his sweet personality & independent nature.
If you want an eclectus, I highly recommend it. I don’t think you’ll find it a difficult member of your flock. 😸

      @bartholdy74 Год назад

@@ParrotBliss I forgot to add that I only sprinkle four or five pellets on Oscar’s food. I wish I could give him more like Basil because I do worry that he’s missing out due to his aversion of orange coloured food, & if he starts toe tapping again, I’ll cut them out immediately.

Ekkies shouldn't have fruits they need veggies Inc orange and red veggies they need more vit A less calcium they have a longer gut, so lower fat and sugars is needed. Fruit rarely as a treat.
