I think I figured out Trump's strategy. After his commenting on the NRA I see that a lot of people here are starting to actually like him even though this was the ONLY thing he has ever done correctly on his presidency. And I think that's his goal; to intentionally set the bar as low as possible but then do a couple of things here and there to lighten up the public opinion on him so in the end he would be much less hated as before. If criminals can get access to firearms through a black market, they will do that as well. The only practical solution is to allow people to defend themselves with firearms in order to even the odds. Not every person wants a firearm, but that doesn't mean law-abiding citizens shouldn't have them.
