Hi Sorry Just got this kit to make as I served on 4 of the Australian FFG, and noticed the funnel assembly is backward, but looks great. The rudder offset also allowed the shaft to be removed without having to remove the rudder. Definitely needs the etched parts

  • @Mariner311

VERY nice build - I flew off a good half dozen of the West Coast Fg's back in the 80s and 90s as an SH-60B crewman. YES, the reason for the rudder offset is to allow the shaft to be pulled without removing the rudder (USS Rueben James - FFG-57 bent her shaft on a tug-line while I was aboard, and had to have it replaced). I HOPE to get this kit someday - add the LAMPS MkIII "stuff" - the aircraft, RAST, LSO station, and all the junk in the hangar.

This is a spectacular 1/350 scale model of the Oliver Hazard Perry. I plan to build her sister, Rodney M. Davis.
I also like that touch of the open hatch on the port side of the bridge, it makes it seem more convincing, and life like.
    Great work all around.

My understanding of the offset rudder was that it was set 18 inches to the starboard to give smooth turning radius. If the rudder was dead center, parts of the rudder would be in a turbulent cavitation zone from the propeller. by offsetting the rudder, it was able to move more water and thus turn better.

@JJ Model Making: Your completed model looks great! I've been considering these kits since I spent nearly 4 years aboard one of these ships. There are minor build differences between hulls, and updates over time that the model kit doesn't account for. One example is the stepped-stern. The original plans were drafted for SH-2 Seasprite helicopters. Later hulls were extended by ~8 feet and featured a "stepped down" stern area for the rear capstan, thereby allowing clearance for the larger SH-60 Seahawk helicopter to clear the tail rotor. Not all hulls were updated to reflect this change.
Probably in the late 90s or early 2000s the surviving hulls were outfitted with a slewing-arm davit instead of the slip/slope whatever assembly on the portside boat deck. It's these little changes that keep me from purchasing one of these kits, as it wouldn't accurately reflect "my" ship.
Some more info on frigates for improved accuracy:
No model ever comes with them, but FFGs have active stabilizing fins amidships, slightly forward of the quarterdeck. They can be seen clearly in some of the drydock photos here www.navybook.com/no-higher-honor/timeline/ffg-58-under-repair-at-bath-iron-works/
Also, as you stated in your video, the rudder is offset to starboard, but the screw comes apart in at least 6 major assemblies. Each of the blades can be removed individually from the hub, which houses pitch-control hydraulic equipment. They're quite interesting ships despite their lowly status.
The "rigging" that you created with fine thread is a pair of HF (high frequency) radio antennas. The thread was a good solution, but note that the bottom ends all come together at a single anchor point, a pylon just off the superstructure.

It is sad that most of the Oliver Hazard Perry class had been scrapped (including the main ship), sunken as targets, or had been sold to be back in service (witch is good that some of them are still in service except that they are in different countries)

I wonder if anyone has actually modeled the later OHP versions that had the extended aft section? Also, I noticed that the torpedo tubes are missing. Sorry to nit-pic, but its what happens when an old salt FFG sailor like myself see's things that arent quite right (as mentioned before, the funnel is backwards). Quick question... And this is not intended as a knock...because the model looks fantastic! but since you used the PE railing, why not fill those holes intended for the kit railing? Could definitely still do it and just touch up with a little flat grey.

When and how(AB or Brush) did you paint the decks of the Superstructure? and When did you put on the railings (are they painted with the deck or the vertical walls? I have a horrible time with the sequence of building ships!! If I paint to early, the glue does not hold and screws up my paints.
