A very under-rated cricketer was Alec Stewart - would have probably averaged 45-48 had he not been asked to do wicket-keeping too. A great servant during a difficult era for English cricket.
I think they needed a wicketkeeper- batsman at that time. Russell was great but not good enough to bat 7. Don't know if there was anyone else who could.
@@chrismanners2554 100% Correct. Stewart as wicket-keeper brought a better balance to the side. Enabled them to play the extra bowler. Understand why Eng did it ... but it did impact on Stewarts batting and personal record. As I say he was a great servant for Eng and should have got more credit than he probably did. I probably didn't fully appreciate how valuable he was at the time either.
He had a wonderful career but Alec Stewart for me should always have been a No 1, 2 or 3. He was happier there and a far more dangerous player and had no trouble whatsoever playing spin later on. But down the order he struggled first thing against spin.
Aravinda de Silva showing what a class act he was!

Agree with you. I didn't appreciate him at the time properly.

After receiving firecy treatment from Patterson n Ambrose previous series they had, English batsmen enjoy some batting
Once again, thanks for keeping these coming!
