Moxy Fruvous - King of Spain (HQ Audio)

- WATCH IN 1080p FOR BEST AUDIO QUALITY (video still in 'tatoVision)
Finding a version of this song with good audio quality on the internet was proving fruitless via legal methods. So I nabbed the CD off amazon (Bargainville, buy it!) and ripped the track. I grabbed the Music Video from Vodnika's YT, and did my best to synchronize the two.
As the MV and the CD use different takes of the song, i had to increase the speed of the video to match the new audio track (slowing the music to the video being a counterintuitive option to what I was trying to do in the first place). Ultimately, only 28 frames of the video were lost. Differences in the takes can be observed, however, for example the lyric in the video is "...introducing the Spanish National Orchestra", whereas the audio track refers to the "INTERnational Orchestra".
Along the same line, although unobservable, the take heard in the original MV refers to George Bush being president, however the Album version refers to Clinton who was elected between the two separate recordings.
All technical and other mumbo-jumbo aside, enjoy the video, and enjoy the song =)

I hung out with these guys, esp Murray, for a number of years, until they finally went their separate ways. I went to well over 100 of their shows, all over Ontario, and western New York. I don't wanna think how many miles I put on my old van taking my boys to their out of town shows. I have a big box FULL of mementos of those *Fruvous Years*. I always met the most interesting people at their parties. My 3 young sons were always invited. I gave Dave Matheson (the King of Spain) my accordion. Spent one musical Christmas at Mike's house with my boys where I met MP Jack Layton (now deceased) and his wife Olivia Chow (now Mayor of Toronto), I helped Jian Ghomeshi with his taxes. Enjoyed fascinating correspondence with Murray when they went on the road, then over the drink to England, Scotland and elsewhere. He was my fave. Their "Gulf War Song" always made me cry. Good times....
This is both the most 90s and Canadian thing in the world and I adore it
It's actually pretty '80s, but Canada is a bit behind culturally, making it EVEN MORE SO Canadian.
As a fellow Canadian how grew up with this song as a kid, I wholeheartedly agree!!😄🇨🇦
This is how most of us in America think Canada gets down, its not a bad thing. You guys are friendly and you gave us Tim Hortons!
This video is so Canadian that my house now smells like maple syrup.
@@yellingonthesubwayWe also gave you basketball, lightbulbs, peanut paste, sonar, electric wheelchairs, snowmobiles, insulin, and a ton of other things
This was played on a little radio station in New York when my sister and I were teens, and I sent it to her. She says to me she says "I forgot this song existed" meanwhile this has been stuck in my head for the past twenty some odd years
I'm in that crowd with my mom. I think I was about 8 or so.
Thats sooooo awesomness
@Evurblue that is a part time job, when she's not vacuuming the turf at Skydome
I hope it wasn't a school night
Lol that’s awesome
I love everything about this song; The joyful bounciness of the melody, the simple yet whimsically absurd premise of the lyrics, the incredible acapella, all of it 😁
All these years I listened to the song and sang the main chorus, yet I never knew it was about him being in "CANADA." This makes me happy... 😁😊
This song came up on my TMBG channel on Pandora and now I am obsessed with it.
Just came up for me on a TMBG facebook group! funny how worlds collide
what an incredibly 90's music video this is.
How am I just discovering this song in 2021??? Thanks to Amazon Music too. I was a 90's teen and never heard it, but this is my new favourite song.
same, its such a good song too
Im discovering now, I see a SFM Sonic animation
I just heard it for the first time on our local "oldies" radio station. I can't believe I missed it when I was young! 😃

not so much, but thanx

+Shawn Richardson WE can't believe anyone likes this either !
Glad to see the comments on this upload are particularly active. My dad showed me this song when I was little and I ended up hating it because I found it annoying. About a year ago (I'm a senior in high school now), I rediscovered it and fell in love with Moxy Fruvous as a band. Tonight I've probably heard it about 40 or 50 times because I'm transposing and covering it for a school project
I'd say for the last 20 years or so, anytime anyone mentions Spain, I always say, "once I was the king of Spain." Doesn't matter if it's a stranger or whoever, and like Lamb chops, I'll go on and on my friend😂
I am a Spaniard and I still do this
i remember hearing this on cassette back when i was 5
a masterpiece
hey, where did you find the music video for this song? i was looking for their other music videos which i know exist, but they don't appear to be online anymore
Man, I haven’t heard this song in years since I was a kid!😄🤩😎👌 Sniff, I miss my childhood!😄🤩😎👌
I still remember all the words ❤️
I saw this on Just For Laughs.
I still sing along

This takes me back.
these suspiciously similar "LOL THIS SUCKS" comments from similar looking accounts concern me
thank you grumpy old people for being old and grumpy but I think I'll keep listening to this song
Yeah whatever "HollyBlue!" Or maybe you just cannot admit that this many different people all agree that Moxy Fruvous sound like village idiots!
same, i just like this song. Idk why people dislike it so much, but whatever just enjoy the song and dont read the comments lol
Its idiotic slop sung by a serial rapist
@@GothamCitySWAT i mean, which generation gave us the equally silly "Men Without Hats". another Canadian band , with their big Safety Dance song.

A simple and magnifique masterpiece?! ❤
Moxy Früvous was a politically satirical folk-pop band from Thornhill, Ontario. The band was founded in 1989, and was active until 2001. Common themes in Früvous songs include Canada and the "human experience". The band formed in 1989 when Jian Ghomeshi (then going by Jean Ghomeshi, Murray Foster and Mike Ford, former classmates at the local Thornlea Secondary School and playing in a pub band called The Chia Pets at the time, joined with David Matheson to busk in Toronto. They drew crowds, and, eventually, the attention of Toronto-based CBC Radio, which commissioned songs about political and local issues for the radio show Later the Same Day.
They were fabulously popular, for example, at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival that I attended in 1992 they were the most popular act. They played all over, they were very lively and spontaneous on stage and the crowds loved them and knew all the words to all their songs. There was not the remotest indication of any scandal or abuse at that time. They had some really clever lyrics and a fresh quick style on stage and did a lot musically with a single guitar and a single drum.

Saw them in concert in Waterloo. An unknown singer named Jann Arden opened for them.

this is a epic song
Damn I love this song
this is so wholesome and Canadian. it takes me back
So someone posted a poll on FB about favourite Canadian bands. This was just yesterday. It was one of those polls you could add to if your favourite wasn't already there. Somebody put Moxy Fruvous and my brain went DING DING that name is familiar but why. Kind of let it go but it was still nagging me today so I went digging. This is the song that my brain was looking for! lol
Awesome

OMG thank god for this comment, I found this song recently and I had no idea where I'd heard it before
Awesome Song 🤘🤙🤘🤙
I know nothing about Canada, but I think this song is funny especially the line that sounds like Kermit, didn't realize this band was so controversial lol
Always loved this song. Bouncy... happy... fun!
I wish I could have been on Bloor Street, watching them film the video.
+Nicholas Hylton Of all the great films that they've made in Toronto, you would have wanted to watch THIS ? Why? So you could say you saw Jian Ghomeshi the Sociopath in person ??
Why? It reminds me of my youth... happier times... the funny lyrics... the amateur video quality... _the vocal harmonies..._ The same reason I like BNL's, "Be My Yoko Ono", shot in that 'Speaker's Corner' booth.
Plus, it is David Matheson's lead vocals on this song that put a smile on my face. Do all the band members have a history of sexual assault?
+Nicholas Hylton No...only Ghomeshi...and he may get away with it. Great Justice System we have...It looks more like the WOMEN are on Trial !
+Count Wolfula We have a far better legal system than the USA. If this were the States, the Women would have been crucified by the press already. OJ anyone?
+Nicholas Hylton Apparently it might be that none of them do.
My Sister saw them in concert. That got ti meet them! Had tea with them
Dunno how I found it but I used to listen to this a lot in like middle school
I like the words to this song, actually.
Never heard of these people in my life, but came to this video from reading Sarah Polley’s book. Spotted her in the video just twice, super briefly. I’m assuming it would have been a big deal for her to be in this video, wasn’t she extremely famous in Canada at this time?
Hey, it's Jian Ghomeshi.
I first saw this on MuchMusic in 1993
Moxy Fruvous should make a new version of this song for Harry and Meghan..."Once I was The Duke of Sussex, now I eat humble pie. Oh my unspeakable wife Duchess Meghan! Now I eat humble pie......Hey Trump, Hey Putin got problems? You text me....Once I was the Duke of Sussex, now I eat humble pie and now I deliver for Skip the dishes..."
still is the duke of sussex
10 year old me wore my walkman out listening to this
Why listen to the song if you don't like it? Seems rather a waste of five minutes of your time to listen to this and comment something about Ghomeshi that doesn't change the fact that he did nothing illegal, if indeed you don't like it.
People do it all the time on YT. They do it bands I love too. I want to write what you wrote to them!
But then I remember...No one in the bands I like worked for the Public Broadcaster, or earned great amounts of money and fame, so that they could viciously abuse their co-workers, or their dates, - both verbally and sexually.
So there's that.
How many hit CDs do you have for the 90s
not gonna lie i actually like this unironically
Who doesn't!
Never heard of this before and thought it was gonna be a king of pain by the police mashup
Heard this song in a playlist and imagined some musical, like lion king haha. Totally different!
how old is this song anyway? It looks like it's from the 90s or so.

Thank you so much! Gotta look back through the videos for this one; I didn't catch it!
Am I the only one who likes this song.... xD
Nope, you're not the only one, I like it too. In fact, I enjoyed Moxy Früvous & their wonderful harmonies right away, from the1st time I heard "Kick in the Ass." And just my opinion here, but I will never grant that butt-ugly little pervert Ghomeshi the power to detract from the fact that I still enjoy the music & wonderful harmonies that Moxy Früvous came up with. :o)

A+++++++ comment.
LOL!! Good One!!
Im so confused why are there so much hate on this song? Is it because of Jian Ghomeshi? I don't think what a person does (even if it is awful) doesn't make their music shit.
+Raska No....It's the SOUND of this that makes the music shit !
I believe many people disliked the song in the 90's, and found it irritating, but they didn't bother to comment then. You must understand something... People certainly have the right to express their opinion. Yes it is because of Jian Ghomeshi! He treated women like he was a Serial Rapist. He should be in Jail.
I loathed them from the start. With their cutesy, oh so progressive lyrics they represented all of what was wrong with the urban left of Canada. Self satisfied, anti-American and completely full of themselves.
And then Melvin and the Pharaoh began their epic duel
Bow bow.

Right. Ford's the vocalist. Hate the song, but he gets a pass because lousy songs are not quite the crime that abusing women is. Ghomeshi was lead strangler and skin flute. That's a different tune altogether.
Just sang the lead in a concert. So fun (but so hard) to sing!

In late 2014, Ghomeshi was arrested and charged with four counts of sexual assault, and one count of choking, in relation to three complainants.[5] He was charged with three additional counts related to three more women on January 8, 2015.[6]

DK , I love it too... Sorry, but this band was great- deal with it
Deal with what? Ear infection? That's what this song feels like.
Back in the 90's when this song (and CD) first came out, I was working as a DJ. I was hosting a high school dance and had a list of songs the school administration told us not to play. Things like Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirt and Pearl Jam's Even Flow. They felt the songs would lead to moshing and that would be a huge liability for them. They also said not to bring any 80's music as they only wanted modern music to be played. And that was fine. Still plenty of great stuff to play.
However, students started coming up on stage to request stuff we couldn't play. Nirvana. Pearl Jam. Songs from the 80's. At first, we thought that was normal. The kids didn't know we were given a list of restrictions. But then the president of the student council took me aside and let me know that the teachers were purposely telling students to come up on stage to ask for the very songs we couldn't play. Their plan was to make the students have a less than great time at the dance so they could try and pay us less for DJ'ing their event. Total douchebag move.
So, I thought to myself "You want them to have a bad time? Fine by me!" So I put on this weird little song from a new band called Moxy Fruvous; King Of Spain.
It immediately packed the dance floor and the crowd erupted! First, they cheered as though someone had scored a winning goal during a Stanley Cup playoff game. Then they sang to the song in unison. You could barely hear the original song. They fricken loved it!
And that one song turned the dance around. Kids stopped requesting songs and we overheard them telling the teachers to let us play whatever we wanted.
Later that evening, I went on to slow things down with Moxy's Stuck In The 90's and then played the Spiderman song. Again, the kids sang loudly over the songs and blew me away with their knowledge of this band I'd never heard of before. And when it came time to be paid for my work, the school admin didn't have a leg to stand on when they tried to renegotiate. We even got them banned from being able to hire Much Music's Video Dance Party (which was a big deal back in the day) because we knew the folks who ran those events and had no patience for clients who pulled that crap.
Point is: this song unexpectedly saved the day and gave some high school kids (and myself) a night to remember. 😄👍
Who also came here because of the Sonic SFM video?
me!
me too!!!
