  • Did he DESTROY Our Aquascape?! Adding a Monster Fish to a Nature Aquarium Mega Build
    🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿
Today we get to see if our aquascape will work for our fish or if it will be destroyed by our Andinoacara Rivulatus as he is first introduced to his new planted tank. We have been planning this planted tank build for months with the hopes of providing a more natural environment for our monster fish. We show our monster fishes reactions to being introduced to his new heavily planted aquascape style nature aquarium layout.
Throughout this planted tank mega build series, we show you exactly how we went about setting up a planted tank with a large aggressive cichlid. This is not a setup that will work for every monster fish keeper out there but opens the door to new possibilities. Some hardier plants may work in certain setups or even mosses may be possible with even some of the more aggressive cichlid tanks. This particular aquascape layout was designed with our cichlid in mind using plants that have a better chance of working, as well as leaving spaces to provide a cave for our fish. We really tried to understand what our fish likes and needs in his tank to provide him with a more natural environment that would work for him in his own nature aquarium.
His reaction was not quite as expected. Keyko, our Andinoacara Rivulatus "green terror" Cichlid, played dead immediately upon seeing the net. When first introduced to the tank he quickly went and found his cave in the back of the scape. It took him a little while before our timid cichlid started to explore his new planted tank environment. So far, we have not been able to get the best footage because everytime he sees the camera he stares it down. On the bright side, he has not damaged any plants and so far seems to be doing well in the new aquascape.
It's not often that you see a large, aggressive cichlid in a high tech planted tank but so far everything seems to be working well. We look forward to providing future updates on the planted tank build and our fish.
None of this planted tank build would have been possible without the help, support and guidance of many. We can't thank all the people who helped make this happen enough. They include:

There are always "rules" that people say...like cichlids or big fish will destroy a planted tank. Some CAN and have but it is never a hard fast rule...many people are successful with it. So it is better to say "proceed with caution" rather than "you can't do it." It all comes down to the temperament of the individual fish.
    Great job

Yep you hit the nail right on the head. I think that we were pretty smart in the planning and testing stages to see how he would react to different situations and plants. A lot of people don't realize there was a 6 to 8 months trial before we decided we would go ahead with it.

Thanks Kyle. For sure man, I was a little concerned of course about it but on the other hand he was living with plants for quite some time without any issues. For anyone who want to try this i would suggest that they get a few starter plants to try with the fish and observe how they react. If they shred the plants well then that plant might not work. Some plants dont taste good either where others a fish may ilke. Maybe larger plants are not the way to go in some situations but that don't mean that mosses or grasses wont work in certain location of the tank. Understanding your fish is the key to success when it comes to plants.

I hope the green terror likes his new home. I have a bad feeling about this setup, but experiment and let us know how it goes. : )

Yeah i think he likes it Roger or i think he would have messed it up a little more. I wouldn't try this with any other green terror that i have owned but every once in a while you find one of these real docile fish and that is what we have here. It may go south at any point in time but all we can do is try. Thanks for watching.

+Mark Krok Thanks mark, I tried to go bigger for him but my landlord restricted me on a bigger tank as i live in a apartment building. I do have a friend with a 180 in case we have to move him till I can find and move to a bigger place myself.

Glad he didn't trash the tank. My second Hydor leaked as I was filling it with water so I am back to Eheim.

Yeah he would make quick work of it if he wanted to. I haven't had any issues with mine so far, where did it leak from? Sorry to hear that, always sucks having a mess to clean up.
