This is one of the best iOS music videos I’ve ever seen. It’s the passion for the subject matter, the attention to detail and the fact that, you’re so well versed in the apps functions. I’ve been looking forward to this vid because I’d like a vocoder. I think Dervoco looks like the one for me. I fancy being able to play my guitar and make masculine robot voices and say demonic things when the Post lady gets to the letterbox. Mature.
I totally „agree“ on your choice towards iVoxel! It has the most natural/organic sounding engine imho, if that makes sense. The Matrix Synth has this lo-fi touch which I like, too. Same for Voice Synth, but with more grit or dirt (compared to Matrix Synth). Hard to describe. Very interesting character comparison, Jakob. Thank you!
Jakob, I’ve been enjoying many of your videos over the last two weeks (I’ve just started using iOS synthesis) and this is by far the best so far. Excellent clear comparative examples and a deep dive into the history and technology but without ever getting bogged down in techno-babble. Well done 👍.
Great explanatory video on vocoder iOS apps and the principle of Vocoders in general ; simple and to the point….Matrix Vocoder seems to be my fav ; going to buy it !
Watching now, very nice! iVoxel is very smooth-sounding, i quite like the bite of voicebot though. As usual they all have their own pros and cons. Thnx for all your hard work Jakob!
Thank you for watching. I definitely like all of these, but iVoxel is so far at the top. Yeah ... it’s got a somewhat “organic” vocoder sound to it. It might be why I love it. But man do I love doing bass-type stuff with Matrix Vocoder. Nothing quite does it like that one.
Superbly explained great attention to detail, your content never fails to deliver.i love vocoders I think the Sound has been implanted in me ever since ' Sparkey the talking piano '(which isn't a vocoder but has the sound) when I was a kid,I use iVoxel from time to time but mainly in old Skool electo tracks I may just make a effort to use it in other tracks.............Thakyou for your time making this video
Another great sounding vocoder is on a pretty much forgotten about modular app that never got the credit it deserved is Jasuto , which ithink was never updated to ios 13 or possibly even ios 12 im not sure , but the tone on the vocoder is so smooth and warm sounding ! its too bad Jasuto never caught on as it was way ahead of its time in the music app world and can get incredibly complex and deep with modular design basically no manual though so you kinda have to just figure it out on your own.
hi jakob! i love ivoxel too, and i hope the developers give an update to the app. also, in ivoxel you can use any input as the carrier wave using audiobus in a weird way. inside audiobus, in one channel set first a synth (or any signal) as input and ivoxel as output, in another channel set the mic as input and ivoxel as output. then in ivoxel choose auidobus as wave and activate the mic, that's all! sometimes works weird, but it works!
If you are looking to vocode from a live sound (not MIDI) input like a guitar then pick up Matrix or DerVoco since they allow alternate carrier and modulator signals where the others do not. There is also some work being done in Drambo to create a modular vocoder with various input sources (as of July 2020).
One of your best videos yet!! I’ve used voice synth the most, but I learned a lot about that to. When it comes to favourites you know which one I love the most. We’ve talked about it multiple times :)
The funny and surprising fact of all is, at least in my point of view, that the oldest vocoder app sounds the best! Also, there’s another vocoder available. Well, it’s inside another app: Caustic 3. A great rack module DAW like music app.
Hai, you are thoroug! Great work. Can you tell me if these are also usable on stage with for instance Camelot and a iPad. Is there a Nice vocal harmonizer app with vocoder possibility to use live on stage?
Thanks for the reviews! Any suggestions how best to interface for live use? Perhaps an IK iRig or similar (for the mic in and line out)? I like the idea of being able to sequence the keyboard part in advance, so the performer just has to hit "go" and then do their vocal part, no live keyboarding needed.
Thanks a lot mister Haq, I was just about to give up on ivoxel but with your preset and by playing several notes I got it to do exactly what i wanted...planet rock and new star in sky by air, thanks a lot. (i was too lazy to play the notes)
My audio gadgets are having popping and distorted cracking. I’ve notified Korg did you ? It’s happening on my brand new silicon iPad Pro 12.9 inch! Finally someone who knows about this issue. Do I change the buffer ? What did you do ? It’s ridiculous that this has been going on this long ! It’s not happening on my 2015 iPad Pro though( Intel) this daw needs third party plugins ( I would like to install my erm plugin inside of gadget which works in most daws already but alas it not there yet! Global tuning to try songs in different keys and app support too.
I just pulled out my V_2 card for my Roland V-synth and it's crazy fun! It has a key follow that reads your pitch and follows it which allows you to sing into it without playing any keys! The PO-37 is really one of the best to pull out choppy robot voice at low low tones but as you know it's only for pre-recorded. The best I remember trying was the Korg MS2000. That vocoder picked up your voice so clear when you simply whispered threw it! I hope Korg will make an IOS MS2000 with vocoder :) ASLO maybe we can start a petition for a new version of Figure? one that sends midi out too? or at least export it?
It occurred to me at the end of this that I already owned one of these, had had it for nearly a year, and had never ever used it. Then it occurred to me, listening to you using it, that I probably never will because it clearly requires you to be tuneful. But that’s YT demos for you- buying stuff you’ll never use because someone showed you that THEY can... Anyway, great video, learned a lot, kept my fingers away from ‘buy it now’! Edit- just browsed through my synth apps and I’ve got TWO of these. Devs can clearly see me coming a mile off!
Omg I am so looking forward to this album dropping! Love your vocoder style, it’s so mellow and hits right in the feels. As a new iPhone user and audio experimentalist, your content is super helpful!
just watched your video again jakob, by the way thanks for helping me out with matrix, but if you open an audio track in cubasis then add AUM to that audio track you can record into cubasis while listening to what you have already recorded in cubasis.... 👍🏻🙏.. 👍🏻
Hey Jakob, thanks again for this video! I’ve watched it a few times now.. very informative!! Loves how you do you videos! ... right off the bat the Matrix is calling my name, that sound!... with all of your knowledge with vocoders I was wondering if you can recommend a vocoder app I can use with a didgeridoo in a live setting (aum)? ... I feel the Didge has some fluctuation in pitch and I will need something to follow that fluctuation.... also a vocoder with the least amount of CPU (DSP.. I’m almost maxed out) thanks for any advice you can help me with! You ROCK!
Wow, that's awesome. It's crazy how there are many vocoder choices. My 5 are 1. Garageband's stock Vocoder (inbuilt) 2. Harmony Eight by Virsyn (AUv3) 3. Voloco (IAA - Free) 4. Audiotune by Audiokit (AUv3) 5. Voxsyn by Virsyn (AUv3) I di have voice synth but I never really vibed with it. But seriously, man, thanks for this. Given me an appreciation of so many apps. Edit: 27 mins in, and now I remember why I bought Voice Synth. It's incredibly powerful. I remember making a few presets but I also ran out of time to use the app as much as I'd like. Maybe I should get back to it. I also love your explanation on the principles of voice synthesis. Didn't know about that article so I'll check it out.
I like harmonisers too, but they’re not on the lists since they’re not pure vocoders. And personally I don’t like TunerFX at all. The overuse of “T-pain fx” ruined it for me completely. I’m so allergic to it that I won’t even use the auto-tuning settings in vocoders that have em. The only one I can handle is the VoxSyn vocoder/tuner one. It’s special and produces some really unique sounds.
@@olivermartin3028 Yeah, it's scattered in different apps and plugins. But I'll hopefully release a video on it. Already filmed it, just need to sit and edit it.

Amazing work Jakob you put so much time, energy and love into these videos. It's fantastic to see someone with so much passion, it's infectious and has made me re-fall in love with making music. I have two silly questions though, 1- Which app would you recommend a newbie to start with? 2- Which app is the closest to what Daft Punk use :)
The simplest one to start with would be ... I’d probably say start with iVoxel first. However (GUI-wise) I’d say Der Voco. Less controls, more direct. . iVoxel and Matrix vocoder can do Daft punk type sounds.
Brilliant video. I see this is a year well spent. Thank you. I’m getting the matrix immediately. It’s quite like the vocoder in the Nord Modular G2; not as powerful, but more portable. 👍🏽
I always come back...to the school of Haq! Outstanding content. I know you can’t go TOO deep into each app, but this comparison illustrates the individual thought process of each designer. Having this many options and flavors...it’s a good problem to have. Awesome. Thanks. Incredibly helpful!
@@JakobHaq yes, your videos look like a lot of work. respect! really love when diggin deep in historical knowledge - like your bell system technical journal coverage. creates a substantial foundation for spreading information on the www … which makes a lot of sense these days … big up & big thx again for sharing!
Fantastic Vocoder comparison! I love how you highlighted the unique elements of each one and why they might be more (or less) useful depending on the input + final output required.. you explained everything so clearly.. I totally understand what a vocoder is + does now because of your extreme efforts here.. a huge thank you for that.. What flavour do you like? Simple question but very difficult to answer.. This video helps us all in that decision process.. still not easy BUT e-a-s-i-e-r.. Really loved some of your examples.. great chords + voicings and the vocals fit perfectly.. very inspiring.. Are any of them on final tracks that we can purchase? Would love to hear them in the full context of a song.. absolutely lovely as they are too.. It seems like you've used vocoders for a while now.. you've clearly shown that here.. the best vocoder tutorial on the Tube + quite possibly the entire net.. that was an absolute pleasure to watch.. Bravo! + Thank you..
Thank you for the praise and I am happy I could help out in some way. iVoxel carries my most favourite “flavour of sound”. It always have. I’m fact all of VirSyn’s apps are very high up on my “love-this” scale. . Regarding final tracks. I am currently working on a vocoder album. I have no idea when I’ll be done with it. I’ve pretty much worked on it for 6 months and it’s going to take ... probably until winter holidays before get close to done. The hardest part about this one is writing lyrics. My “lyrics-kung-fu” is very weak. 😅👍🏼
I wish you had put the last bit first, the fact that Cubasis 3 sucks when it comes to routing MIDI. I've been trying to solve this problem for years! Still, we got there in the end.
I’m looking to expand my hardware setup with another vocoder. Mininova has one and it’s interesting but I want dedicated boxes. I’ve been eyeing the VT-3 but it looks way too limited. Maybe the VT-4 would be something.
Good catch. Yes it’s kinda is. It’s not a pure Vovoder per see, but it does have a Vocoder effect option. Can’t remember which button it was though. Haven’t used it for 6 months. 😅
This might be impossible to do... but... is there a way to use a vocoder in Nanostudio 2? (Thinking that NS2 can't deal with audio, it also can't deal with a vocoder? Sorry if this question is stupid, I am just getting started in music production on iPad as a hobby and have a lot to learn.
You do a really good job on your videos, Jakob! Just curious if you've heard any news on what Reason Studios will be doing with Figure in the future? I miss the Allihoopa days...
areality40 reason has really done a fine job of sinking their apps. Paid premium for them by iOS standards and were well worth it at the time. Disappointed they haven’t developed for them an abandoned them it seems. Does Figure work on your iPad? Mines stopped working.
@@Yo_whatupwithyou I still use it religiously on iPad and iPhone and even still have the Windows 10 version on my Windows machine, though that version is kind of useless.
@Mind altering fx What iPad model and version of iOS? All my devices are able to run Figure without any problems. I’ve got: iPad mini 1st gen - iOS 9 iPhone 5s - iOS 11 iPad mini 2 - iOS 13 iPhone 6 - iOS 13 iPad Pro 12.9” 1st gen - iOS 13 I have no issues other than the bevelled sides of the iPhone 6 being a nuisance. Touching the edges makes iOS thing I want to swipe away the app.
I need to record sweet vocals sometimes stack them put a bit of reverb and tune them a bit …while also record rap vocals and backing vocals too …..really need help
Ive bought vbot seeing ur vid and this app states as its auv3. But i am unable to use it with bm3 it doesn’t take any input when i load it as plugin in my bm3 , plz suggest a good autotune for bm3 .
Which is best for live use ie. keyboard microphone and no pre recorded samples. I bought a microKorg because I couldn’t find any iOS vocoder that would work live in real time without first having to record what you wish to vocode....
I haven’t used any Vocoders on iOS that needed pre-recorded stuff to work before. Which vocoders did you try out btw? All of these vocoders work real-time and there are more apps out there that I didn’t add to the list like: VoxSyn Pro for instance. And if you’re into Harmonizers then Harmony Voice by VirSyn is good too.
Jakob Haq I have just revisited matrix and dervoco and found that I never understood them well enough first time round. I now have both working and dervoco is great with tal-uno synth. Tomorrow I might try using my accordion as carrier and midi input device.
Question: which one of these apps (if any) can you use on a vocal track after its been recorded into your DAW. I bought Vogel but since it’s an IAA it seems like you can only use it while recording. Wonder if there a way (or app) that will effect the audio afterward. Possibly all the AuV3 ones? But I’m not sure.

thx Jakob for this extensive immersion into vocoders on ipad. great and inspiring video. really appreciate your effort. blessings
Thank you for watching! I’m really happy when someone notices the work I put into a video. 👊🏼😊
@@JakobHaq yes, your videos look like a lot of work. respect! really love when diggin deep in historical knowledge - like your bell system technical journal coverage. creates a substantial foundation for spreading information on the www … which makes a lot of sense these days … big up & big thx again for sharing!
Seriously, Jakob needs to put out that vodocer intro song
can you use pre recorded audio as carrier instead of midi tracks/keyboard?
Very useful video Haq!
What is it about vocoders, they really get my attention. Great video !
Can you record an audio and then record again and vocode the audio to that audio?
Good Video Jakob. Big help!!
Thanks for this. I’ve been debating on vocoder apps for a while now, this is helping
I hope you’ll find one that suits you!
Jakob Haq I’Lil probably end up with all of them at some point lol. Looking to start with voice bot or dervoco.
another helpful video. feels like a lecture 🤣💪🏾
Great stuff, I’m not a fan of the effect but appreciate the quality of the overview and the apps.
It’s not for everybody. I love vocoders and harmonisers but I don’t like Autotune at all for instance.
@@JakobHaq Yeh, tricky to make a creative case for Autotune unless you're Cher ;)
I appreciate the work and time you put into your videos 🙌
Thank you!
Amazing work on this one, Homie! 🤗😁👊
Thank you Bro! 👊🏼
I got a mini nova bc of the vocoder & that was about it😂.....before I bought an iPad.
Let us know when the album is done.. All vocoder? That does sound interesting.. good luck with the lyrics..
Hi Jakob, which one of those can I use as a Vocoder but also as an Autotune effect?? Thanks!
Very informative. I might look into getting one of these
Thank you for watching! 👊🏼
Thanks a lot! I already found my favorite among these 🙂😍
Aw, don’t leave me hanging. Wich one is it? 😅
@@JakobHaq hahaha it's Voice Synth. Tried the demo too, now it grew my app wishlist 😀
Der Voco sounds the best out of the ones you reviewed imo
I wish you had put the last bit first, the fact that Cubasis 3 sucks when it comes to routing MIDI. I've been trying to solve this problem for years! Still, we got there in the end.
Actually, Steinberg added AUv3 MIDI routing back in May this year (2021). ruclips.net/video/2EgaMfWaTo4/видео.html
@@JakobHaq This is why I think I love you. I may have to dedicate my next album to you!
Thanks for this review Jakob. Can any of these vocoders get put on a synth as AuV3 in a daw?
Great Jakob👍welcome back🙏
Thank you! =D
I have a Roland VT-4 for live Vocoder effects
I’m looking to expand my hardware setup with another vocoder. Mininova has one and it’s interesting but I want dedicated boxes. I’ve been eyeing the VT-3 but it looks way too limited. Maybe the VT-4 would be something.
Great stuff, thanks you for this Jakob, very useful.
Thank you for watching! 👊🏼
@@JakobHaq PS your music is awesome 2 :)
Aw! ❤️❤️❤️
Sick lab rat! I LOVE YOU! GREAT VIDEO! The po137 Po speak its a vocoder?
Good catch. Yes it’s kinda is. It’s not a pure Vovoder per see, but it does have a Vocoder effect option. Can’t remember which button it was though. Haven’t used it for 6 months. 😅
he does it again! thanks buddy!
Great video, thank you for your sharing!
My pleasure! 👊🏼
hello friend, some of these options I can use with guitar, even adiquiri the vocoder, but I couldn't find a way to configure it to use it.
Is there an app for android?
Pls reply
Great in-depth reviews 👍
Thank you! 👊🏼
Thanks
The auv3 limitation in DerVoco is no longer applicable after Cubasis 3.5 update. Right?. No you can route midi to an audio fx in a track.
@areality40 Tank you and Nope, not a word. I have no idea what’s going to happen to their mobile apps.
@Mind altering fx What iPad model and version of iOS? All my devices are able to run Figure without any problems. I’ve got:
iPad mini 1st gen - iOS 9
iPhone 5s - iOS 11
iPad mini 2 - iOS 13
iPhone 6 - iOS 13
iPad Pro 12.9” 1st gen - iOS 13
I have no issues other than the bevelled sides of the iPhone 6 being a nuisance. Touching the edges makes iOS thing I want to swipe away the app.
I would delete the app you have installed, look it up in the App Store and download it again.
Hey man, j use BMW and need vocal tuner and hadmonizes as I do my rec on iPad, pelasse suggest some
I need to record sweet vocals sometimes stack them put a bit of reverb and tune them a bit …while also record rap vocals and backing vocals too …..really need help
Which of these can I use as a plugin with Logic?
Curious why you didn’t include Korgs iDS-10
Ive bought vbot seeing ur vid and this app states as its auv3. But i am unable to use it with bm3 it doesn’t take any input when i load it as plugin in my bm3 , plz suggest a good autotune for bm3 .
I need it
Matrix is cool, but try the synthmaster one vocoder, see Dougs videos he does a great demo.. 👍🏻👍🏻
Yeah I’ll try to dig into it!
I love virsyn apps
They’re on top of the iOS vocoder and vocal FX game!
I wish there was an app that could simulate soul samples 😭
So, which of these can be used as a plug in for Logic?
The ones that support being loaded as AUv3. It’s basically all of them except iVoxel.
how many of these have live input
All of them.
Way super cool I rock android and I am super jealous lol
I got a new I pad 128gb very cool and I got the most rugged case poetic case look it up
Question: which one of these apps (if any) can you use on a vocal track after its been recorded into your DAW. I bought Vogel but since it’s an IAA it seems like you can only use it while recording. Wonder if there a way (or app) that will effect the audio afterward. Possibly all the AuV3 ones? But I’m not sure.
All of them, including the IAA’s. It’s exactly what I’m doing to produce the demos you can hear in the video.
Jakob Haq I’m so glad you said this because it made me go back and figure out what I was doing wrong.
