  • Today I am sharing my story with You, my Dear Sewing Friend, about a handmade dress from 1994 that made me value handmade things, care, dedication and the art of sewing. My mom made that dress and till this day - it is the most beautiful dress for me. Finding a reason behind your passion is like finding a purpose or a meaning. A very important part of everything we do in life! I hope you enjoyed this video and thank you for listening!

This story is so touching. My mother was forced to sew in Thailand and hated it. When I was a child at 10 a neighbor elderly lady taught me to make doll clothes. I fell in love with sewing for relaxation. I’m 43 now I had a stroke 2 years ago and love watching these videos. I started sewing again and using my machine left handed. It’s helping heal me, thankful for you and your sweet videos.

Tina, hi! I am so sorry for the way it was for your mom.... but on a positive note - doll clothes is how I learned to sew as well! :) It is so inspiring to hear that using your machine and sewing helps you heal - it is amazing! Wishing you the best and more healing and inspiration! Thank you for sharing!

I had to stop the video. I started crying. I'm not prone to crying -- certainly never thought a sewing video would make me cry! -- but I remember as an adult from afar how hard times were for you guys then. The thought of your mom trying to make your day special in times of scarcity and how much you loved it just brought me to tears.

Sewing is passion. I feel honored and proud wearing all of my mother's makes. She sew my unifors since kindergarten to nursing school, to my my scrub suits. There is this feeling that my clothing is one of a kind, nobody else have it; my unforms fit perfectly, i looked good in them...now im learning how to sew. It does make my heart jump when my daughter likes the dress, or shorts or costume i made for her. ❤

I started sewing in 2020 out of necessity ... I now have a 2 year old daughter, we created a tradition where we'd shop the remnant bin at Joann's on weekends, depending on what we'd find I'd give her some patterns (usually dresses) to choose rom to make from our find. We'd spent as little as 68 cents but the memories I have from them are priceless.

Hello dear, Alisa, I end up crying while watching your story. Because I miss so much my mom, she's now in heaven with my dad. Since the day I was little I always watch her handsewing because we never had a sewing machine before. And now i still keep her projects bedsheets, pillowcases, and bags which she did when she was still in school. Now I'm 42 i push myself to buy a machine to pursue sewing simply because me and my mom both love sewing. Its just that we never had a chance of sewing together. And lately i learned about your channel and i love watching you and your videos. To me it's so helpful giving me lots of ideas. Thanyou very much. Im from the Philippines. God bless you dear❤❤❤

You are just the dearest person. I feel I’ve really gotten to know you as I have watched your videos. I LOVED the story of how and by whole your baptismal dress was made, and your explanation of the connection and memory building it created. I ALSO LOVE how you encourage people to think beyond the actual product to the connection between the one sewing and the one receiving. I remember my mother staying up all night sewing a bridal gown for my Toni doll. It was so special to me. She made lots of clothes for me and began teaching me to hand sew when I was about four. Fast forward to high school and she was my home ec teacher. Throughout her life she was always making and giving to others. Whether it’s quilting, knitting, crocheting, sewing clothes, or another creative activity, the products we share with others create a special bond. And you’re right, think beyond the seam ripping and other annoying parts of the process to the joy it will impart and the memory that will be made. You are an excellent teacher, but you just went way up beyond that in my opinion, with this message. God bless you and your family!

Oh, you make me cry. Your story of special mom made dress for your baptism is so touching. And I live in Latvia. Had got both through Soviet and postsoviet times. I know what you mean by not having nice clothes. And this was the reason I sew my own graduation dresses for 9th and 12ves classes in secondary school and even for graduation from University. I designed my own wedding dress but didn’t dare to sew it myself. Now I have 5 children and I still find pleasure to sew occasionally when I find time. And because we were taught at school to sew, to knit, to crotchet, to embroider I have skills to do it being creative and finding comfort in it. Thanks for sharing yout lovely story!

Such a heart warming story. I recently discovered my First Holy communion dress. Mom passed away just shy of her 100th birthday, and sorting through her treasures, I found my dress. She had also handmade it. I was seven years old at the time, 1949, and it is such a blessing to hold her creation feeling all the love she put into something that made me feel so beautiful that special day. She is the reason I sew. She placed a needle and thread in my hand when I was five years old, and we shared our passion forever more. Thank you for sharing your story.

Thank you for sharing your story. My great grandfather was a tailor in Portugal and Brazil. My grandmother, his daughter, was not a professional seamstress but she sewed Easter outfits for my sister and I for many years. I learned to sew by watching her. She never used a pattern. She would take apart a garment and copy it. Some of my fondest memories are of shopping for fabric with her in old fashioned fabric stores. She didn't speak English so I went along to translate. How happy remembering this has made me. Thank you.

Thank you for sharing this beautiful story! I discovered my love of sewing in a Home Economics class in Grade 8 (I was 12 and it was 1967) from a strict and enormously disliked and feared teacher. A funny environment indeed! My mother disliked the notion of sewing your own clothes and strongly discouraged me from pursuing it so my love for sewing wasn't sourced from a loving and encouraging environment at all but my passion for the craft was immediate despite all odds! I think you either HAVE it or your don't. I knew many girls whose mom's made clothes for them and they hated those "homemade" clothes and had no desire to learn how to do it. Sewing your own clothes was associated with being poor and out of style which thank heavens has changed a lot over the years!

A friend of mine taught me to sew in grade school about the same year as when you started. It sure was cheaper to make your own clothes back then. But I happily wore my homemade outfits. Even now, about once a year, I break out a wool poncho I made in high school LOL. I too did not care for my home economics teacher. When I finished a really well made pair of slacks, she accused me of having my mother make them! Nobody in my family sewed. So glad I HAVE the passion.

I was too young to appreciate her skills when she was alive, but she taught me to crochet. And my mom taught me to knit. Beautiful, thank you for sharing! When I hear a story like this, it reminds me that sewing skills were once very essential, pre-industrial times, they did not have department stores filled with clothing and a trip to the tailor or making it yourself was a normal way of getting your clothes made/done for you. Handmade gifts are the best, you are so right!

Your lovely rose dress reminds me why I always think sewing for children is the very best way to learn. It only requires smaller pieces of fabric, they're easier to fit with flat little chests and not much waist shaping but most importantly if you use superhero fabric, pop a unicorn on it or a couple of sparkles they will only see that and love it not caring one jot about the imperfect stitching that is inevitable when we first learn to sew. They know how to share the love which encourages you to keep going and learning - that's the most important thing of all.

What a delightful video to wake up to, but it brought tears to my eyes! What an excellent message! No matter why we sew, our time spent doing it adds so much meaning to the garment, the time, the event, etc. I love how you pointed out that memories can be more anchored, or have more meaning, when a garment is handmade. Sewing is a gift of time, service, and love.
When I was a new mom in the late 80s I was very poor. I bought one carefully chosen pattern that had multiple wardrobe pieces in it for my toddler, Sunrise Designs Starting Blocks Sew Simple Collection and Kerstin Martensson's Sew For Baby book, both came with patterns for a full baby wardrobe in all sizes. Fabric was all given to me from my mom's old stash, and I cut up my dresses from high school (because they no longer fit) for fabric. As finances improved, I continued sewing for my four girls and myself. Looking at all the clothes in our photo albums brings back layers of memories!
Somewhere along the line I stopped sewing, but started again two years ago after finding the online sewing community. This video has encouraged me to follow my latest prompting to sew for my grandchildren!

When I was young my mother sewed some, mostly repairs. There was 6 children , a lot of patchwork.
When I started having children I didn't have a lot of money. My first child someone had a flannel sheet. I made a crib sheet, a blanket and some sleepers from it. Later on my friends would cut their old jeans off to shorts. I would ask for the cut off and make jeans for my boys as they grew I would eventually us them for shorts fo them.
Friends would ask were I had bought them. It made me feel good. I still continue to make my grandchildren and myself clothing and Quilts

My mother came from a family of 10 girls and 2 boys. All of the girls (probably encouraged by their mother and aunts) were creative. Sewing, knitting, crochet, painting, music were all part of their heritage. I'm in my 70s now and I've been sewing and making other handcrafts since I was about 8. Often my memories of events include garments I made for the occasion. These days I sew because I don't like what's available in the shops and it gives me great pleasure to wear custom made clothes that make me feel great. I've also enjoyed making special occasion clothes for my young grand-daughter.

I so agree with you, sewing is caring. When the COVID 19 first started, I got my brand new machine out of the box, (I purchased 2 years ago to have when I retired) checked in my sewing closet that had cobwebs lol, to see what I had in my stash that I could make masks out of. I had hodgepodge. You see for me, I learned to see at about 12, my mother taught me, she taught me how to crochet, and quilt, cook and make ceramics. I took four years of Home Economics and I became a great seamstress. I began making my own clothes, my mother had always made them before. Fast forward to my mid twenties, I would go to the store after work, buy a pattern and fabric, go home and sew up an outfit and wear to work the next day! I never questioned how good or perfect it was, it never occurred to me. Then two children and full time management job kept me so busy I didn’t have time to sew. I had a great machine that came out of the case when I needed to repair something. Times were so hectic it was too easy to buy readymade. Prices for patterns and fabrics had risen so it became more economical to buy ready made. Now fast forward to March 2020! I got that brand new basic Singer out and I went to town making masks for my family, then friends, then co-workers. The word was out I was making masks and I was making very good ones. I had rekindled a passion for sewing that I had let lie dormant for way too long. 500+ masks later, I started making aprons and other fun things. This past week my husband and I celebrated 20 years of marriage, he bought me a Juki DDL 8700, I get it next week!!!! I am so excited. Yes, sewing is caring and you give a part of your heart in every stitch. I take orders now for sewing and my love and prayers go into every garment. Your story inspired me to tell you mine, thank you and God bless you!!! I am so thankful that my mother instilled a love for sewing in me! ❤️❤️❤️

Thank you sharing your beautiful story. This really touch my heart. My mom didn’t know how to sew but she would take me to best friend who was a great dress maker to make me the most beautiful dress for weddings in the family and festivities. She had very good taste and eventually I would looked the most beautiful girl on a wedding. She wanted me to learn sewing back then but I was not interested now I regretting it for not listening to her. Now am trying to learn but still I find it hard. It too me five hours today to do my top pattern and still am not sure if it right. If you be really great if you do one more tutorial but very slowly and in more detailing way how to take measurements and draft a pattern. You see am not too young now. 😉

Thanks for sharing the memory Alisa:) Such a cute little dress! It’s neat to hear how it impacted you & your sewing:) Brought back my own memory of my flower-girls dress custom made for me for my Aunts wedding. I remember going in for a few fittings. It was a cool experience. I got to teach my young niece how to use a sewing machine this past Christmas and I’ll be seeing her again this coming weekend! I’m making a couple of matching dresses for her & her sister. I might take my machine in case we have time for a little sewing bonding time:) Maybe a few hair accessories? Anyways, thanks again for sharing. I always enjoy your videos, xo.

Oh yes, you can make some scrunchies or bandanas - I am sure girls would love it! Oh, I can only imagine how cool it would be to go for an actual fitting at a tailor's shop as a child! Like a fairy tale -I always pictured it like that scene from Cinderella, where all of the animals are helping her sew her dress! Thank you, Rikki - I am always happy to see you here, you're awesome! and... I can't wait allllllll the beautiful things you will make for your little princess!

You have such a beautiful heart. Thank you for sharing your memory and your talent. I sewed my first quilt by hand at age 9 because my grandmother loved to sew. For me, it gave me a sense of safety, love and made me feel like I wasn't worthless. I had an abusive home so sewing was my way to feel confident in me because it made me feel like I had grandma next to me. I had put down my needle and thread off and on in life but I still sewed items for my kids. My daughter is a gorgeous young lady and she struggled with self confidence so one day I made her a pair of black and white small checked print stretchy bell bottom pants. Omg....she is about a 1 in size and when she put them on, she glowed! She wore them to the mall and total strangers complimented her pants and she'd grin theb say MY MOMMA MADE THEM FOR ME. She went to college and I made another pair of bell bottoms for her. She made friends because they loved her pants and thought she looked like a model. So yes, sewing is so much more than saving money or relaxing. It fills a person's heart. I even made my other daughter a t-shirt quilt with all her t-shirts from 7 high school sports. I didn't want her to forget how hard she worked to achieve goals and how I was always there cheering her on....now she can wrap herself up in her blanket when she needs me. THANK YOU FOR HELPING ME LEARN SO MUCH MORE SO I CAN GIVE TO OTHERS NOW.

I love this! I learned to “sew” from my grandmother on her 1921 treadle singer. I put sew in quotations because I liked to move the treadle more than actually sewing anything. She would patiently put up with me pushing the treadle over and over. She taught me to hand sew as well. That Singer was fabulous machine that still sits in my hallway. I am now teaching my daughters to sew. I hope they have those type of memories of our time together.

Oh. Such a special memory..... I just finished sewing masks for my nephew who is part of the reserves and heading out to serve. I made them to match his uniform. I made them with love , yes to match his uniform, but also to keep him safe. He left today. His smile and thank you made my heart so happy.

I am watching for the first time today. I so appreciate the story of the dress your mama made for you at age three and how that special dress iver shadowed the things happening around you. My grandmother sewed for my sisters and I when we were children. My mother sewed for us also. This gave me a love for sewing. I have shared this with my children and family. It's how I share my love. My nine year old grand son and I just sewed a quilt together for his bed. He worked tirelessly piecing and quilting that quilt. It's a great of bonding with someone. God bless you my new YT friend.

You hit the nail on the head . I was taught to sew , knit and crochet all throughout primary and secondary school and that was sixty years ago . I sewed for my four children and now my nine grandchildren . People say you can buy it cheaper but they don’t understand there is such a joy to create and make. . It’s something innate . My mother did not sew but thankfully my teachers did . So very grateful to them . Loved your story and the things you create . Greetings from Australia .

Oh this video made me cry! When I sew or knit I think of my mother, I am flooded with memories of all the things she taught me, always with patience and humor. She has been gone for 9 years. She grew up in Germany during the war. She taught me the art of mending, as clothes wore out and there was always repairs to do. I have made lots of masks for family, friends , neighbors, strangers, some from a few cotton shirts I did not enjoy wearing. I could hear her saying good job, see you made with what you had in your home! Thank you for sharing your story!

Very sweet video. I loved your baptism dress. I wish I was able to sew when my kids were little but I didn't start sewing until I was 55 or so! But I AM able to sew for my grandkids and my sons NOW. I so agree with your sentiment on finding joy in sewing for others. Even masks for strangers, I feel like I am contributing something. But it is so special to sew something for our family.

The story of your dress brought back memories of the wonderful clothes my mom made for my three sisters and me. I can’t remember store-bought clothes, though we did have them. But I remember the autumn skirt and blouse my mom made me, with autumn leaves appliqued on. I remember the queen of hearts dress she made for Halloween when I was eight. They were lovingly made and I felt loved wearing them.

I come from a long line of people in my family who have many 'skills' ... sewing, knitting, crocheting, and many more. This memory reminds me of all the memories that my cousins have shared that are very similar. My favourite is a cousin who had 9 siblings and her mother (my aunt) made many of their items of clothing. She remembers their kitchen table always being full of sewing items that they had to push out of the way to eat. It's a very sweet memory for her. This was very touching. Thank you for sharing.
